Programming workstation and general use laptop (no gaming)

Programming workstation and general use laptop (no gaming)

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 11:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally no more than 2200, buying in USA. If there's a perfect match outside my price range I'm willing to wait. Also, if there's a laptop around the corner, I can wait for a few months for it's release. Additionally, I get corporate discounts on Lenovo and HP. Usually a few hundred less than when using their sites directly.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life of at least 6 or 7 hours preferred. In general, my goal is to replace both my current laptop and my desktop with a laptop that has near or more CPU power. That PC was a custom build, but was running an i7 3930k (scores about 12000 on CPUbenchmark.com), and 16GB of RAM.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm opposed to the fat gaming laptops, both aesthetically and portability wise. My maximum would be Macbook Pro 15. My ideal is something like the Zenbook Pro 14.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Needs to run Linux, and have good support for it.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14inch preferred. Fine with 13 or 15 as well.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No. Web browsing and Netflix are the most graphics intensive things I plan to do. I require CPU power.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is a plus, I do need fairly strong build quality as I run my machines for at least 5 years. Fingerprint reader a plus. No need for optical drives or touch screen. I dislike numpads. Security features in general are a plus, as are dual drives.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Final life goal is to be chargeable over USB-C, but it's a pretty minor goal.

Looking for a note taking college class laptop

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:13 PM PDT

Currently, I have a friend with an HP Pavilion x360 m convertible 14m-cd0001dx. She is currently willing to sell/trade it to me because the display is damaged and needs a new display assembly. I can fix it myself if I buy the part, however, I can't find a solid pricing on a used version of this laptop. I was wondering if it would be worth it to buy and repair this computer or if there is another computer out there, preferably two in one for tablet use (with a pen?) that I could use for general classwork and note taking that would be more cost effective. I already have a custom built desktop and can get nice SSDs for cheap from my work, so I can always upgrade my own drive and laptop RAM and everything, granted its easy to access the components. I currently haven't had a conversation with her about what that price would actually be.

Budget: Anything around $500 and under

    Country: US

Usage: Computer Programming (Either on the laptop or, more likely, tunneling to my desktop) and simple note taking

    Weight: Don't care

    Screen Size: Don't care

    OS: Windows

Graphics: Not doing anything GPU intensive

Quality: Decent? It'll last me my last couple years of college

Touch Screen: Preferably flip-able to a tablet

Need SSD to speed up my laptop

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:14 AM PDT

    Hey guys!
Two+ years ago I bought a custom budget laptop and lately I am feeling the performances have dropped.

I am working as a Developer and wanted to boost the performances replacing my HDD with an SSD.
I would like to keep around 500Gb of storage and wanted to ask if it's possible for my configuration to mount both HDD and SSD at the same time even though I believe not.

I've had a quick search and I found these SSD: Corsair-CSSD-F240GBMP510 and Crucial-MX500-CT1000MX500SSD1

I am not even sure if my laptop supports NVMe.

Here are my specs, feel free to ask if you need more details:

    CPU: Intel Core i7-5700HQ CPU @ 2.70GHz
    RAM: KHX1600C9S3L/8GB x 1
Motherboard: Micro-Star International Co. Ltd. MS-16J1 (SOCKET 0)
Graphics: 3071MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M (MSI)
    Storage: TOSHIBA MQ01ABF050

I can see upgrading the RAM would be ideal too. Any advice?

    Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:09 AM PDT

    Hi,

i want to buy a gaming laptop since i got a lot of time to play while not being home. I can spend up to 3000€, but i'd prefer to keep it between 1500€ - ~2200€. I don't have a specific game that i play, i'd just like to get the best overall performance for the money. Battery life doesn't really matter since i don't mind having my laptop plugged in. Size doesn't matter either, as long as it fits in a bag ;)

Optional Question: I checked the internet for offers and saw that brands like Alienware and Razer are way more expenive for the same specs. Is this purely paying for the name/design, or are they in any way better regarding cooling etc?

Below is my form, many thanks in advance for helping me.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I would prefer to spend between 1500€ - 2200€, but i am able to spend more. Buying in germany.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Couldn't care less about 2 in 1, battery life is nice-to-have but really doesn't matter to me, best specs is all i am after.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? nice-to-have, but not important at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, don't mind if it comes without an OS though.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? no specific games, i want overall good quality/performance

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? no

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Laptop suggestion for an engineering student

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:34 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    Country: US

    Budget: $ 1,000 USD

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    I can consider a 2 in 1 form factor, but I prefer a laptop.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Lighter laptops are more of a convenience (since I care about portability) but it isn't a necessity and I can very well be fine with heavier laptops.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows is a must.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Small enough that I can take it to and from class everyday. Around 13" will do, but I can nudge a bit more if need be.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    MatLAB

    SolidWorks

    Microsoft Office programs

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I need a laptop that's reliable and can last me through my undergraduate years (at least 3 years).

Also, since I'm taking this laptop with me everywhere, it's essential that the material doesn't wear off easily.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I will use this laptop strictly for my studies. Nothing else.

    I can also consider Touchscreen, 2 n 1, stylus.

Here is the website to my engineering department of my school. It lists all the specific requirements if that's helpful in your recommendations: https://eng.vt.edu/admissions/computer-requirement.html

    Much appreciated!

    Should I buy a HP Envy x360 13 AMD?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:02 AM PDT

I've been looking long and hard for a laptop for college/work/light gaming. Came across an interesting HP Envy x360 13z with the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U + Vega 8 graphics, 8Gb and 256Gb NVMe SSD, 2-in-1. However I've read complaints about thermal throttling, battery life and the laptop randomly shutting off. Are these one off problems or is this something I should worry about? Maybe AMD is not there yet or HP just did a bad job with the components? Should I get something else? Other laptops I've been eyeing are the vivobook s531fl (15.6", i5-8265u, mx250, 8 Gb, 512Gb SATA3 SSD) and the vivobook s431 (same specs and the s531fl)

    Laptop for intensive business work

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:54 AM PDT

Location: Australia ** Please suggest models even if you do not know if they are available in Australia or unsure of cost in Australia.

    Budget: $1000-$2000

    • Intensive use, every day.
    • Need to be smooth while running multiple applications simultaneously. Need to be able to switch between:
      • Web browsing: always active including online banking, real estate websites, news and other market websites.
      • PDF viewer, zooming a lot on high res building plans, specifications etc.
      • MS Office applications, including Outlook and Excel.
    • Good display for viewing detailed drawings (building plans, photos).
    • Does not need touch screen.
    • Not as concerned with battery life as smooth performance. Especially smooth performance that will last.
    • Portability/thinness: does not need to be ultra slim, but needs to fit in a reasonable sized laptop bag.
    • Screen size: around 15 inch
    • Windows
    • NO CAD, video editing, photo editing or gaming
    • ANY SPECS that will ensure smooth performance for doing intensive work 7 days a week.
    • Fast start up time is important.

Decent laptop for CS student and programmer

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:52 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $700 USD. Country of purchase is Iraq, but since most of the devices are not available here I will buy them online and get them forwarded to my country.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
      Best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important. I used to have an Ideapad Y700 gaming laptop and it was way too big and heavy for me to carry around, I want something that's no more than 2kg.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows / Linux. I also don't mind if it didn't come with a Windows license if it makes the cost lower.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inch.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't game, and even if I did I play very old titles on very low settings, so an integrated chip is no problems for me. Or an MX150. I mostly do programming in Visual Studio or web development work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Old titles such as GTA: San Andreas at very low settings at 60FPS. I believe even an intel hd can handle that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Very good keyboard with fantastic typing experience since I spend most of my time writing code! I don't want a touchscreen, a good build quality is also nice to have, the rest is optional.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I did a lot of research and I came to the conclusion that the Thinkpad lineup is the best for me, however I wanted to get a T440P and upgrade everything including the Processor and Screen, but the laptop itself is way too thick and heavy for my usage.

Currently I like the T480, but it's not within my budget, I wish I could of gotten a T480 with a very low capacity HDD and RAM and upgrade those later to save on the cost.

I just don't know what to choose anymore. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

    Best laptop for artist/gamer

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:04 AM PDT

I'm tired of doing hours of research to find a cheap alternative just to be met with disappointment.

I'm going to save as much money as I can this coming year and buy the best laptop I can. What's the best laptop money can buy for 1500-2000 dollars Canadian?

I'm going off to college soon so I would like it to be sort of thin and light and I need a very colour accurate screen. A dedicated graphics card is a must (not mx150) and a decent battery life with lots of storage. I just want the best laptop I can get. I know better laptops will come out this coming year but atleast this will be a good basis to see which of the new laptops to get.

Also I'm more then willing to go above my budget by a little bit if it's truely gonna make a difference.

Question about the Acer Predator Helios 300, should I buy?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:58 AM PDT

    Greetings friend,

It is my first time posting here but I really need some wisdom and I don't know where to go...

    A little bit of insight:

I am looking to buy a laptop that is more gaming oriented. I was looking at the Helios 300 and I heard realy good stuff about it. I was really persuaded into looking for the 2019 model as it has vastly superior cooling and design to the 2018. I agree with this, but the problem seems to be that the 2019 is way more expensive, even in the entry level. With this in mind, I ask for your reccomendations on if it really is worth the price.

The games that I like to play are Appex Legends, WoW, Dota 2 and Witcher 3.

The 1st option that I found costs about 2364$ US Dollars (2132 Euros) and has the following specs:

    Procesor Intel® Core™ i7-9750H

    Display 17", 1920x1080, 144 Hz NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8gb, GDDR6

    Ram DDR4 16gb

storage 512gb SSD and 1tb HDD

The 2nd option costs about 2032$ US Dollars (1831 Euros) and has the following specs:

    Intel® Core™ i7-9750H

    17.3inch 1920 x 1080 / FullHD / LED backlight / Non-Glare / IPS (I'm assuming 60hz)

    nVidia GeForce RTX 2060 6gb

    Ram DDR4 16gb

    Storage: 1x1TB HDD + 1x512GB SSD

The 3rd option costs about 1849$ US Dollars (1667 Euros) and has the following specs:

    Procesor Intel® Core™ i7-9750H

    17.3inch 1920 x 1080 / FullHD / LED backlight / Non-Glare / IPS 60hz

nVidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6gb

    Ram DDR4 16gb

    Storage: 1x1TB HDD + 1x512GB SSD

What do you say sirs? Personally, I would buy the 3rd option if it had 144hz... But then again there is a difference of 500$ between the 1st and 3rd.

Does 144hz really make that much of a difference or is it more of a superficial buy? Also, are the prices ok for these laptops? I could not find them cheaper cuz they arent very accesible to me. The 2018 version is considerably cheaper but it comes with a GTX 1060 but it does have 144hz...

Excuse my long post and lack of proper grammar. Thank you kindly for helping me out!

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Using different IDE's to code, gaming isn't very important to me for laptop. I'd rather do functionality for school > gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If anything, civ V

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard is a must, and touch screen for the 2-1.

    Laptop for Graduate Student, <$1000

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:53 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Hard cap of $1000, would prefer to pay substantially less. I'm in the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for sure. Battery life would be a plus; my last laptop only lasted 45 minutes, so anything more than that would be great.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe a little AutoCad, definitely some matlab and python. Main use will be to browse internet and to write and read.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No games that aren't in browser flash games lol

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality would be great. Previous POS laptop had to be held together by tape.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Looking for a solid laptop that will last me 5+ years of grad school. This is being paid for by a scholarship for materials, so I can't spend more than $1000, and would prefer something that will work so I won't need to go through bureaucracy to fix it.

So far I've looked at this Asus Vivobook and thought about ThinkPads, but they are all sold out for the time being

    Country: Canada

    Usage: Computer Programming/ Csgo

    Weight: Don't care

    Gaming Desktop Replacement (~$1,700)

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:40 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,700

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best spec for the money and also something that doesn't look gamey. (MSI GS65 Stealth is what I've been eyeing, but I'd like more suggestions)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like a good balance between build quality and lightness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" is the largest I'd go.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Triple A titles with light coding here and there.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? High settings 60+ FPS in triple A titles (Battlefield V, AC Odyssey, etc.)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like to have good build quality while also having at least a Thunderbolt 3 connection or good IO. (More explained below)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So this laptop is meant to replace my current desktop as I'm wanting to be more portable while also being able to plug back into my gaming corner seamlessly (Hence the Thunderbolt 3 requirement, so I can get a dock for most of my peripherals to connect through).

    Desktop specs

    • CPU: R5 1600
    • GPU: GTX 1070
    • RAM: 16GB DDR4

    Gaming Corner IO Requirements

    • 2 Monitors (with HDMI, DVI, and VGA Outputs)
    • 4 USB Devices (XBox One Controller, Headphones, Keyboard, Mouse)
    • 1 Aux Device (Speakers)
    • 1 Gigabit ethernet connection

Tryna choose a laptop for college (comp sci)

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 11:41 AM PDT

Hey yall, I am going to college in September and need to quickly buy a laptop. I don't plan on playing any games on it at all as I have a pc at home. The laptop will be used mostly for school work and maybe a bit of browsing. So, I really am looking for something that is not so expensive and will be good for programming.

Some laptops I am thinking of are https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-i7-8550U-GeForce-NanoEdge/dp/B07B7VFTN9/ and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QXKW89P/

But, I kind of feel like these laptops might be a bit of an overkill for what I am looking for.

Anyways, any suggestions or recommendations for other laptops are welcome, thanks!
