Portable laptop for programming/very light gaming Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:36 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Approx 1000 euros, The Netherlands * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2-1 is nice-to-have but not really necessary * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Important, will be used on the go a lot (it's to be used beside a beefy main desktop) * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13/14 inch * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Programming (visual studio 2019/code. probably some gaming through moonlight/steamlink. might want to run simpler stuff like Slay the Spire locally (on the road). * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Slay the spire / hearthstone * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** good screem (coming off a Chromebook Plus (V1)... don't want too big a downgrade). good keyboard. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Programming stuff will likely require an i7 and 12/16gb. Having roomy storage (or room for expansion) might be a plus too. I was looking at the XPS 13 but those are just a bit out of my budget range. I could save for a bit longer I guess, i dont' need it *now* per se. I was looking at Zenbook 13/14 maybe? Not sure on build quality. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:21 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm going in to my second year of university and need a new laptop. Something that could run the main apps such as, word, PowerPoint, excel, and run several internet tabs without any slow down. Also, something that could play YouTube videos at a high resolution, whilst also having apps such as Word in the background without any lag or delay. What are the best laptops for a budget of $750 US? [link] [comments] |
Australia. Budget of around $1000 AUD Posted: 20 Aug 2019 02:14 AM PDT Hi guys, my computer just went boom and I need something to get me by. My gaming requirements are quite lightweight. I only really play LoL, EU3, Age of Empires, etc. Price range is around 1k AUD give or take. I work in the outback so ideally something online that can be posted. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

A Decent All-Round College Laptop with CAD capabilities Posted: 19 Aug 2019 06:24 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: €1,000 or less, Ireland Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be nice but not essential. I'd like a pretty good battery life, ideally lasting a full college day without looking for a socket. How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight isn't a big issue but thinner would definitely be better for fitting it into my bag. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" would be the max, id prefer something around 13-14" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Being able to run CAD would be nice as I am starting an engineering degree. I don't need anything with serious CAD processing ability but not having to rely on computer labs all the time would be brilliant. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad). Decent keyboard is a must. A touch screen (/with stylus) would be nice but like the 2 in1 its not essential. Something pretty sturdy too as it will be carted around a good bit on a cycle commute/ between lectures. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for a smallish college laptop that I can bring around with me during the day. I need it to be reliable and smooth to work on i.e. not be another cause of stress being slow. I will be studying engineering so a little bit of extra processing power for CAD would be great if I ever need it in a pinch. I will be able to do heavier CAD stuff in computer labs so nothing to major. I like the idea of a 2 in 1 laptop/ touchscreen but don't want to compromise reliability for it. if a good one isn't within my price range. I do tend to multitask and flick between things a good bit also. Any advice would be much appreciated as my computer knowledge is a fairly basic. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:52 AM PDT • Total budget and country of purchase: €900-1200, The Netherlands. 1200 is the max, but if you know something that'll perform up to par for less I'd be eager to hear about it. • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money. • How important is weight and thinness to you? I value performance and lifespan over aesthetic / portability factors such as thickness / weight, though I'll be using this in college too so nothing too heavy would be nice, perhaps. • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac. • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Using this for college too, so 13-14 is preferred - will be hooking up to a big external monitor at home mostly. Willing to settle for 15 inch if the rest of the specs match my wishes. • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll mostly be using it to run Ableton Live 10 and general college use. I'd like to run Live 10 + third party VSTI / FX very smoothly. A silent fan would be very welcome. • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't care about gaming or having a good graphics card, but otherwise good performance is critical. • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't particularly care about any of those features, except for reliable build quality (kind of a no-brainer though?). Looking for something that'll perform well for at least 4 years, so good construction is a big plus. • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'll be using this 50/50 on the go and hooked up to an external monitor/mouse and keyboard respectively. Ease of use / portability is not critical, but welcome. I have been looking at gaming laptops since they tend to match the specs I'm looking for, though some of the designs look a bit whacky to me. I'm considering the following models; For what its worth, I'll be looking to buy from the websites listed above primarily. I'm also considering going the PC specialist / custom built route so I can specify what I like/dislike and get something tailored to my wishes, but am unsure whether they're a worthy alternative to regular, pre-built machines? Also considering refurbished, but again unsure of the long term viability on those machines. Sorry for whacky formatting, wrote this on my phone! [link] [comments] |
Dell XPS 9370 or Macbook Air 2019 Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:49 AM PDT Hey guys, I have this doubt here, stay with my Dell XPS 9370 (2018) with 1 year of warranty or sell my Dell for 700 EUR and buy a brand new Macbook Air 2019 version for 500 EUR (with 5 years warranty extension). I'm a user that mainly watches movies and does some code. That's it. So I don't have big requirements and I'm just looking for efficiency and portability. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:44 AM PDT So I want to buy a new laptop. I can only consider these 2 brands because only these are supported locally. Primarily, I'll be using the laptop for running simulations, designing complex engineering problems on softwares like CAD CAM ANSYS (includes other secondary yet heavy software) MATLAB etc. Occasionally, I'll play CSGO (not at max settings) but that's it. Here is what I am sure of, no U series processor and no Alienware/Omen laptops. I am not a huge fan of touch screens and would appreciate a higher screen to body ratio. I'm willing to spend a maximum of $1500. Please suggest a suitable laptop for me. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:36 PM PDT My total budget will be, most likely $1600 in the US. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I prefer anything, as long as it has a good battery life, has a great built-in DAC, has a powerful dGPU and preferably thin * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I had a Macbook Pro 15" and that was about 4-4.5 lbs, so probably 4.5 max. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** - I require Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I would like a 14-15" display * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I will be doing Video Editing and Gaming on this. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I would like to be able to run GTA V, Fortnite, Sony Vegas Pro 14 and DaVinci Resolve * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** As said before, just need good battery life, good DAC, good dGPU, can be thin and also a comparable display to a Macbook Pro. Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:15 AM PDT My budget is max $1500 but if I could do it for just around $1000 would be ideal. I will also be using this laptop for school work. My biggest issue with looking for a gaming laptop is most seem like they come with a lot of issues and I need it to work for a while for school. I don't play anything too graphics heavy, the most would be GTAV or Assassins Creed Black Flag. If you need more information please let me know! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:14 AM PDT I'm starting college pretty soon and need something reliable and lightweight, as I'll be traveling with it. I'm not interested in anything special like touchscreen, tablet mode, etc.. I just want a good basic laptop with a decent webcam. I have also just gotten into minecraft and might start some other games as well. I don't know much about computers or gaming, but I want to be sure the computer I get will run games smoothly. I am for sure looking for something that has a dedicated graphics card, ssd , good battery life, and good webcam placement. Thanks so much for your help, and any advice would be appreciated (Sorry about formatting, I'm on mobile) [link] [comments] |
Need a suggestion on a laptop or 2 in 1 tablet that has a good stylus. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 08:13 PM PDT Hello I am looking for a device that has following specs.
I found computers with HDD slow down very significantly after few yrs of usage. Must have SSD. Also, I found 128gb on windows is not enough. Since i dont play any games, i am fine with any CPU types except for low tier ones.
Thanks for your suggestions [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:01 PM PDT Hi. First time here on this sub. I have a 500 GB PC from a few years ago that a friend reworked into being a home PC for me. It's got issues though and I've never been able to play modern games on it. I think it runs incredibly slow and lags a lot when I'm using Google Chrome. It's an HP desktop PC from around 8 years ago. (intel core i5 CPU, 660 @ 3.33 GHz, 3.47 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB hard drive, 32 bit operating system, Windows 7.) Long story short, I'm going to be moving from the US to South Korea for one year for a job and I can't carry around this 10-12 lb. PC with me, not even including the monitor. As much as I dislike laptops and the inability to type properly on them, I'm going to have to upgrade to one and bring it with me. I keep most of my work on a 117 GB flash drive and mostly use the thing for internet and emulating classic video games. I think most of my software is freeware and can be re-downloaded. I ideally want to be able to play some modern video games on it, like Mass Effect Andromeda (despite hearing how awful it is from people), but don't need it to be tricked out or anything and I don't really care about graphics; as long as the game is playable. Other than that, I'm mostly just going to use it for internet, emulators, Microsoft Office, and a few other minor programs. Not trying to spend a lot. Just want those core essentials and nothing unnecessary. I'm American, but going to be living in Busan, South Korea for a year. I'm flexible on the size. What laptop can you suggest for me? Thanks. Choosing between a Lenovo and an Acer gaming laptop. Need help. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:13 PM PDT Hi everyone! First of all thanks for your time since you're reading this. I'm in Brazil, which gives me a limited availability of gaming laptops and configurations. These are probably both last year's models (we don't have the most recent ones) and their specs vary a little from the ones in Amazon US. Below are the two that I like the most. Here's what I want to understand: The Lenovo is around 20% more expensive than the Acer, but the processor is 8th generation (vs 7th) and it has a small SSD paired with HHD instead of only HHD. Is the processor upgrade worth the price difference or should I only pay that extra for the Lenovo if I care about the looks (the Acer looks like a murder machine) and just slap an SSD on the Acer for the price difference? Country: Brazil Budget: R$5000 to 6000 (around US$1000) ACER HELIOS 300 Processor: I7 7700HQ RAM: 16GB Storage: 2TB HHD GPU: GTX 1060 (6GB) LENOVO LEGION Y530 Processor: I7 8750H RAM: 16GB Storage: 1TB HHD + 126GB SSD GPU: GTX 1060 (6GB) Thanks once again! Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 touchscreen is needed! Battery life should be good enough to last an academic day (say around 8-12 hours) How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I mostly code in Python and C++. Unsure about any specific programs; I may need to run larger ones in the future, so I like having that as an option. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No idea what games I would like to play really; maybe Overwatch and modded minecraft. I would like to have the option to play other games. Ideally, play at like decent settings (not too low but does not need to be maxed) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? touch screen is a must; optical drive is very nice, finder-print reader is not needed. I need the laptop to be usable and last! Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need a computer that will last me during my graduate studies (6-9 years). [link] [comments] |
