Pixel 3a($400) vs 3($450), need advise for a student.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 10:12 AM PDT

As a student, I can buy the pixel 3a at $400 or the pixel 3 at $450.

Which would be a better pick, considering battery life, software/hardware bugs, longevity etc?

My current device is OP3T, I'm leaning towards pixel 3, due to the performance benefit (I do play some games at times, also it might last for longer time), but if the 3a is not that far back, I might just go for it, due to the headphone jack. Is the pixel 3 worth the $50 more?

Any other recommendations would also be helpful.

Android 9 Pie -- Wi-fi disconnects while sleeping

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 09:49 PM PDT

As the title says, when I put my new Coolpad Legacy phone to sleep, the wi-fi connection disables itself. This makes it so that I don't receive messages through social media apps that need the wi-fi to work (bad data reception in my room). I want my wi-fi to ALWAYS be connected like my old phone. I can't find any option to make this so. I'm assuming that there's some sort of "Turn off wi-fi while sleeping" option that's automatically enabled.

    Thanks for your advice.

Is it possible to USB (OTG) tether internet to a pocket wifi from my Android phone?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:02 AM PDT

I want to turn my old phone into a WiFi repeater, but the only method I found was through Net Share, which was slow and unstable. I also tried Bluetooth tethering and it's just too slow.

My phone is a Moto E3 power running on Marshmallow. I want to know if I can feed internet connectivity to my pocket wifi via OTG so the pocket wifi can repeat the WiFi signal that the phone receives.

Process for identifying unlock adware on Pixel 2 Google Fi

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 10:10 PM PDT

My Pixel 2 has just (today) starting showing stupid webpage and web video ads upon screen unlock. My wife's which has many of the same apps (but not all, I have a lot of technical apps) is not showing them.

I haven't installed anything new this week, so I assume some innocent ap just went rogue and is showing ads. They appear to be showing in a Google Search view, so it's not a webview inside the actual app. So, I'm trying to figure out which app is triggering this action so I can nuke it.

Any suggestions other than uninstalling things one by one?

Hey, so I got a new phone recently and Facebook Messenger makes it so if you silence the chat notifications it also silences the calls. I was wondering if there was any way to get a silent sound file as my notification noise so I can just have the call sounds?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 08:49 PM PDT

I did a backup of game archero which had significant progress, gems and unlocked levels throught titanium backup (apk+data) and then i changed the rom :(

so when i restore the data and start the game, it starts with my progress but then quickly recognises it as a new device and says "account change detected", and logins me into a new account and refreshes my progress. everytime i restore data from titanium backup, game starts from my old save game but i cant play (relogins into new account) i tried reflashing old rom but didnt work, any one here know how to know which androidID was there of my old rom from the titanium backup file data of the game?

so if i restore the android id along with old game data maybe it restores my progress

I am tempted and have the opportunity to get a ROG Phone 2 from China now. Should I? And What should I know if I do?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 07:40 PM PDT

Read the review of the ASUS ROG Phone 2 on Forbes and I am sold on the phone. Will be moving from an iPhone since the 1st gen.

They reviewed the China version and said it was fairly easy to "westernize" the OS and remove all traces of any Chinese apps.

My question is, since I have the opportunity to get the phone now, should I?

or should I wait until it comes out here in around 2 months?

So huawei p20 lite, android 9, public mobile. Whenever I try and configure a private dns(I figured I'd use the 1.1.1.1- or 1dot1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com) it just says invalid input. How do I get something that's a valid input?

How can I spoof my device ID?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 06:26 PM PDT

I have rooted device on Android 8.0 and I want to spoof the ID. I have heard it is possible to change via build.prop but I don't want to go through the risk of bricking my phone. I know some apps exist that will allow me to change my device ID but I am not sure how to go about this. I already tried Device ID Changer on the Play Store but it didn't work. If anyone can help me figure out how to do this I'll be grateful. Thanks.

    Which Tablet to buy?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 06:06 PM PDT

I want a (probably) Android tablet with active stylus support. So I looked at the Tab S4 which is quite nice but has a Galaxy S8 processor. Otherwise I think it's great and it might get cheaper with the release of the Tab S6. Or I could buy the S6 but it's probably too expensive for what I want to do with it, which is mostly Netflix, notes and maybe some office work. Are there any other tablets I should look at or point I should consider buying one of these?

    Thx for the recommendations :)

[Help] Very strange behavior even after restarting

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 05:14 AM PDT

I woke up today to find my phone was very slow and I could not access anything like settings or firefox, I did not think much of it, seems like a normal issue and assumed a quick restart would fix that. Once I restarted things started to get weird.

Wi-FI Bluetooth and Mobile data kept toggling on and off by it's self

The top of the screen altered between saying no sim and my carrier's name

The screen was auto locking it's self but instead of the screen turning off it just goes to the login screen when I am already in.

I was getting a notification for a voicemail that normally only shows up once in a while but it was appearing every 15 seconds or so after I swipe it away

I tried to restart again thinking it was just a bad boot, rare but nothing crazy right. Reboot and everything is still loony so I shut the phone off and after I check back in 5 minutes and turn it on it seems to be fine. I installed malwarebytes from the play store and ran a scan but nothing showed up and I had tried to google for anyone else having this issue but could not find anything like it.

I am thinking either A) Some of the hardware needed to 'flush out' and that's why a hard shutdown seems to work B.) Some kind of strange virus/malware is on my device that is set in an interval or has some trigger. C.) My phone has been hacked by the government and I am an unwilling test subject in studying how humans behave to strange phenomena with the things they know inside and out

I am clueless as to what could be behind this really since I have never heard of such an issue before but my assumptions are based on what normally causes weird phone behavior.

    Google Assistant on OnePlus 6T

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 05:30 PM PDT

For about a week now I haven't been able to get my Google Assistant to respond to voice commands, it works fine of I click the mic, but won't recognize anyone is saying "Hey Google" or "Ok Google".

I have retrained and deleted my voice several times, I have deleted the cache, deleted and downloaded updates.

From what I know, I've tried everything mentioned on Googles support website and I still can't get it to work...

So therefore I hope one you have experienced the same thing, the only thing I haven't tried yet is a factory reset.

    Help me out Reddit.

Contacts leaked on samsung devices. Possible data tampering?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 05:15 PM PDT

So, I own a samsung s10 and some contacts that are not mine appear on my phone. They are from my dad's who shares the same internet connection but I never logged in my google account on his smartphone (samsung note8), neither did he on mine. My contacts are synced with google account whereas his are only on his smartphone.

So.. I searched online but did not find any plausible reason. Some time ago I knew that passwords were being leaked from apple phones on the same network, but never noticed anything similar on android.

In my opinion this is quite alarming since our privacy is severely compromised. Who knows if my contacts or his were not leaked in any public network..

Any suggestions/similar experiences, etc? Thank you for the time spent reading. Have a nice day!

Using a fast charger from another brand to charge my new phone

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:19 AM PDT

    Hi!

So, I recently bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, and it supports quick charge 4.0, the thing is, can I use a Moto fast charger without damagin the battery?

I had a moto g5 plus, and the Moto fast charger has three outputs, standard: 5v-1.6A, turbo1: 9v-1.6A and turbo2:12v-1.2A. The only difference is that Xiaomi's phone has USB type C, which forces me to swap cables.

The original Xiaomi charger has a single output of 5v-2A, and the phone recognizes the fast charger when I plug it in.

Using it normally, and with Xiaomi's type-c usb plugged in moto's fast charger, will it damage my battery? I know fast charging degrades the battery "faster", but I want to be sure this doesnt damage the whole thing in months

    Thanks!

CSC and Flashing Questions for Samsung Note 9 N960N Korean Variant

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 02:36 PM PDT

It's been 8 years since my last Samsung phone (S1 Vibrant) and I just got a SM-N960N Korean Unlocked variant. Spent the last decade with the Nexus 5 and LG V20.

Planning to use Cricket (ATT MVNO) with it in San Francisco, CA. I know that not all the bands are supported but what is the deal with csc?
Does it only effect wifi calling and voip or are there other carrier customizations I'm forgetting?
It wouldn't change supported bands of the modem?
And the detonator tool for changing csc doesnt work for the N960N, if I needed to change it can it manually edit it using a root file manager?

Also, I'm confused by why rom devs link odin flashables while not touching on them in the instructions.
Is it expected to odin flash the model's bootloader and modem before or after following instructions for wipe and rom install in twrp?

    Thank you!

I'd like to have my phone vibrate for notifications but be completely silent for calls. Why does this seem impossible? (8.0.0, root access)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 10:31 AM PDT

First off, I never have any form of sound on for notifications or calls. My phone is permanently in vibrate mode. What I'd like is to keep it that way, but disable the phone vibrating for calls. Ideally I'd like this to not require a Do Not Disturb setting, as I actually use Do Not Disturb when I want no vibration, even for notifications.

I constantly get calls from telemarketers and scams to the point where I never want to hear my phone vibrate for incoming calls (all friends and relatives will leave voice mails or texts, and any important services will also leave voice mails, so I never answer my phone). However, Android seems to tie ringer and notification volume together inextricably. I've found apps like "Volume Butler" that allow me to alter the sound volume of calls and notifications independently, but not have both options silent with only one of them capable of vibrating.

If I wanted the opposite (silent notifications, vibrate calls), I could go into every app's individual notification settings and disable vibration, but I want calls to be totally silent with no vibration or sound effect while all notifications cause the phone to vibrate.

I'm rooted and would have zero issues running a terminal command to disable vibration for calls while in vibrate mode, or setting up something with Tasker. Google's results for this problem though are all for the opposite issue (people want their phone silent except for calls) or related to setting the phone's ringtone to a silent audio clip (when the volume is above zero, you can disable vibration for calls right in the Android settings, but this forces your notifications to have volume as well).

How much of an upgrade (or downgrade) would a Motorola g7 power be from an HTC One M8?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 02:11 PM PDT

I'm thinking of upgrading from my HTC One M8, which I bought second-hand from CeX about two or so years ago. (UK by the way.) I recently received a John Lewis voucher, and the g7 Power caught my eye, partly because of the battery life, which can sometimes be lacking on my current phone.

The main thing I want to do with my phone is listen to downloaded music (Deezer), with casual reddit/youtube/web browsing and the usual phone tasks on the side. I've read that the g7 Power's headphone jack is better than its contemporaries at that price point.

I've also found that my M8 gets sluggish at times, such as when editing playlists in deezer. Also, the charging cable has gotten quite loose, so I think it may be time for an upgrade. The question is, would this particular phone perform better, the same, or worse than my current one?
