New build freezes on motherboard logo screen overlay on Windows load even after replacing / testing every single component.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 02:27 PM PDT

I consider myself fairly competent with computer parts and computer stuff in general and have built 7 computers prior to this one but the issue I'm having now is completely beyond my comprehension & I'm certainly not a computer hardware expert by any means.

Some backstory -- On Monday I moved cubicles & whoever built the cubicles out in our office did not properly ground the one I moved to. When I plugged my 7 month old PC into the powerbar connected to the cubicle power outlet, it shorted and fried virtually everything.

We did not have any other PC parts compatible with my build to test to see what was and wasn't fried from my PC so I ordered essentially an entire new computer with the plan on returning what still worked from my original PC.

Since then I have had this issue where on boot, the system freezes on the motherboard's logo, and the wheel thing just stops spinning (sometimes with it saying "preparing windows repair", sometimes with it just being the spinning circle, sometimes "preparing disk check" etc.).

I have had this same issue with two motherboards now, two CPUs & two PCUs. I have ran memcheck on the new RAM I bought and after four passes it gives no errors, both with each individually and them together (interestingly, memtest86 boots without issue, as does BIOS). I have tried different monitors & different wall outlets as well. I have tried to boot windows from two different drives, one was the SSD from my dead computer (which boots windows on my laptop without issue) and one was an empty disk drive where I installed the windows UEFI repair software from here. I have tried both of these drives via SATA and via USB.

The only thing I can even remotely think of it being now (I'm really out of ideas for what to continue troubleshooting at this point), is that I did test my old RAM on both of the new motherboards I have tried (when i got the second new mobo I wasn't sure if it was the old mobo that was DOA) but it still seems unlikely that damaged RAM would permanently damage the motherboard into the issue I'm having (just an assumption however). My old RAM is definitely fucked though as the motherboard just turns on and then off quickly after a few seconds when I try to use it.

The parts I have tried so far:

I am using a new Coolmaster 212, arctic fox thermal paste, I seated it by screwing three times in a clockwise fashion for even CPU pressure distribution etc.

I have tried plugging the display into my 1070, 2080ti & my motherboards display port and it's still the same issue.

One more thing I've never seen before that happens between both motherboards (this might be normal though) is when I flip the switch on the PSU to turn it off, the next time I try to boot it, the motherboard will run for ~20 seconds with a red light next to CPU warning, shut off and then will boot normally until it freezes at the motherboard logo overlay screen.

Any help is greatly appreciated, this has been the most frustrating week I can remember in quite some time...

All I want to do is to get back to making machine learning models for work :(

    Here's a video of the problem I'm having: https://streamable.com/88a7z

Please let me know if there are absolutely any other details I can provide to help troubleshooting things further.

EDIT: Bios update did the trick and it now appears to be working as intended. Thanks for the help everyone! Looking at the update notes I think this was the requirement: https://i.imgur.com/VcJEQsy.png.

Since the same thing happened with two separate motherboards for me, I would imagine a lot of people will end up having this problem too so hopefully this helps some other people in the future.

Need advice on how to deal with my grandmothers friend says she needs to use my computer to reset hers after being hacked.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 11:50 PM PDT

I am 18 years old and have just started going to college, I live with my grandmother and have a Mac that I use to do homework, and take a coding class, Anyhow my grandmother told me to bring the computer downstairs because her friend needs to use it. From what I could gather her friend says that she has been hacked and that her and her son will be coming over to my grandmothers house to use my computer to "reset" theirs. They said that they couldn't give her anymore details over the phone because "the hackers were monitoring their calls".

When I told my grandmother that it sounded fishy and asked her for more details, she reminded me that she was allowing me to live there, so I have no choice but to let them use my computer. I normally am out at the time of day that they are coming and do not want them going through my computer and potentially either downloading some more malware or trying to get into my accounts since I do not know them.

This whole thing sounds incredibly fishy, so I need to know is there any possibility that this is legitimate and that by using my computer they can somehow reset theirs and leave virus free, or is it more likely that they will (perhaps unknowingly) install malware on my computer as well. I am skeptical since I recently downloaded a virus myself and got rid of it with a factory reset without the use of another computer.

Its also possible that they will be bringing physical hardware that they can connect directly into my computer.

What can I do to protect my computer while they are here? I am thinking of maybe creating a guest user so that they can use the computer without administrative privileges, or having access to my files. will this be sufficient to protect my computer? And if you guys know the solution to the problem that they are having what can I do to help them fix their computer without letting them break mine?

Activate Windows after factory reset on new built PC

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:20 AM PDT

So I just built new PC and had issues booting. It kept saying that boot diveces cannot be found. I fixed it by setting boot to legacy settings and afterwards it let me boot normally. After that I did factory reset since I used only drives from my old PC. Now I used the Microsoft account that has Windows tied to it already, but it says that I need to activate Windows now. No idea what to do. I don't have the key anymore and that shouldn't even be problem since the key was already tied to the account for years

edit: On microsoft websites it still sees like it's activated on my old PC. So I guess I need to contact support?

Speaker "farting" on low tones in ASUS laptop after working for some time

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:58 AM PDT

Hi. I bought a ZenBook Pro laptop early this year, and have been decently happy with it. My only real problem is the speaker, however it has rather to do with sound drivers. It is a UX550 laptop.

Basically, after using it for some time (sometimes a few minutes, sometimes a few hours) it starts to fart when playing low sounds at some point. Then it requires either a PC restart, or restarting the drivers (through for example changing 24-bit to 16-bit sound in the driver settings).

Initially I thought this had something to do with ASUS's OS image, so I installed a fresh one from MS, but that didn't fix the issue at all. Have also disable HW accel for sound.

I have tried removing the current drivers and installing slightly different ones from realtek- and those work fine. Until I restart my PC- then old drivers are installed automatically and the custom ones overwritten. Any ideas?

Moved my gaming PC to new apartment. Won't even boot.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 11:30 PM PDT

So I recently moved into a new apartment for school. I brought over my gaming PC from home - it's a custom built PC. Before the move, the PC worked perfectly fine. Also, I unplugged everything and discharged any leftover power before handling it. I didn't use it at all the following day until I moved it into my new apartment.

Sidenote: when I packed my PC into my car I had it sitting vertically, not horizontally. I understand that having is sit up vertically like that and being packed in my car could've caused something small to bend, shift, or break.

When I got to my new apartment, I plugged everything in and pressed the power button. It didn't boot. So I waited for a bit, and then pressed it again. It didn't boot again. So I opened it up and checked most, if not all, the connection that could be causing the problem. I plugged everything back in and it still didn't boot. In more detail, this is what happens:

    • Unplug the cord to the PSU
    • Discharge it
    • Check the connections to make sure everything is okay
    • Plug the cord to the PSU back in
    • Turn it on
    • The computer turns on for a half a second before it turns itself off
    • The keyboard (which has RBG lights) stays lit even after the PC turns itself off
    • Any attempt to press the power button to turn it back on fails and it refuses to boot until I disconnect the PSU and discharge it again

I looked online on what I should do and only found one or two forum posts with people having similar problems. So I followed what they did:

    • Reseating the RAM
    • Switching RAM slots
    • Booting with only one RAM stick in case the other one was faulty
    • Reseating the GPU
    • Taking out the WiFi card or any other cards
    • Jumpstarting the computer by connecting the two power pins in case the power button was faulty
    • Unplugging and plugging back in the power connectors to the motherboard
    • Making sure any and all connections to the HDD were connected (I actually used a M.2 SSD, but I did this just in case)

I really do not know what to do. All of these ended up not working. I don't know what it could be. I highly doubt my computer was damaged during the move. My brother has the exact same build as me and he's moved it way more than I have and he rarely has any problems with his.

Aside from checking to see if the PSU, MOBO, CMOS, or CPU are faulty, I really don't know what else it could possibly be. It just seems like a big coincidence that one of these would fail during the move. My car was air conditioned and the PC was not in the sun so nothing could've overheated. One theory I have (which is a total crapshoot) is that the outlet in my apartment just doesn't work with my computer. Maybe it can't get enough power? I really don't know. I worked perfectly fine at my parent's house. I've tried everything I can without taking the whole thing apart (which I really don't have time to do).

Any advice would help. I am posting this before going to bed, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for reading.

I need help, bad. (Internet related)

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 05:34 PM PDT

Okay, so the basics of my problem is my internet only shuts off when I'm using it on my desktop. I'm 15 turning 16 and gaming is basically my life. I'm on here about 8-10+ hours a day and that's all I enjoy doing really. In the last few days (week and a half, almost 2) I've had my internet just randomly drop. My mom doesn't think it's that big of an issue which really frustrates me since she has 0 issue using her computer all day, but as soon as I get on, in about 5 min, it kicks off, and stays off until I reset it. It's gotten to the point where I don't care anymore because it's a hike to get to my router from my room. Another weird issue is the internet signal drops for everything yet the modem lights all stay on like it should connect to the internet, yet it doesn't. I've had techs at my house the last week checking for stray voltage replacing wires to the ped, etc. I'm not extremely tech savvy but If anyone can help I'd literally cry this issue is driving me to the brink of insanity.

EDIT: I think my PC might be crashing my network, that or my service provider needs to get their shit together because I've had them out here all last week and about to be this week.

I was hacked in another country over public WiFi, keep getting captchas and not sure if it’s taken care of?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:14 AM PDT

I'll start by saying I know nothing about phones or how any of this works. My phone was hacked over public WiFi when I realized days later that there was a pending wire transfer being made in my bank account (I deleted the account). I set up two factor authentication on my iCloud after doing a factory reset and got a notification that someone was trying to sign in to my Apple ID in another province of the country I was in. This was all pretty scary but I thought I took care of it (factory reset, password change, downloaded Mcaffe security with a vpn). Now I keep getting the message of detecting unusual traffic when I do a google search under my IP address. Could I still be hacked? I read that a vpn could be causing this and turned mine off and it stopped but I just want to make sure, as I'm still a little freaked out by the whole thing. My phone also thinks I am in a different country but not the one I was hacked in which I think is weird. Anyone have any info or help? Is there anything else I can do?

Airflow issues in Corsair Crystal 570X causing NVMe drive's temperature to average at 73* C.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:04 AM PDT

I Have Asus Maximus Code which supports 2 NVMe drives. One of them is inside the motherboard's "Armor" and has insane temperature (Going upto 94*C). Due to my radiator (Corsair H110 GTX) being so massive that I can only fit 2 fans in the front, which causes issues to the airflow. My drive doesn't have sufficient airflow and I can't add another fan. I was thinking of getting a NVMe PCIE adapter but wanted more opinions on how to tackle this problem.

PS: according the HWInfo, my drive only has 88% life remaining, while the other has 100%. I bought this drive 8 months ago.

Bought a 2nd hand GPU, doesn't power on.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:58 AM PDT

    Hi all,

So I just got back from buying a 2nd hand Sapphire Pulse RX 570 4G, I've plugged it in, and there's no power going to it. It's also not showing up in Device Manager.

    My specs:

    - i5-3750k

    - 16 GB DDR3

    - Gigabyte Z77-D3H

    - Was using a GTX 460

    - ThermalTake Toughpower XT 875W

Previous owner said they hadn't used it for 6 months and hadn't tested it before selling it to me. Everything else in my rig is running fine.

What can I try before calling this guy back for a refund?

    Random restarts when playing games

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 06:01 PM PDT

Lately I've been getting random, sudden restarts, straight from a game to a black screen, about every 15-20 minutes when playing. Started a couple weeks ago when playing Black Mesa, and has continued while playing Dishonored (both through Steam). I replaced my HDD with an SSD, thinking it was a disk failure, and I'm on a clean Windows 10 install, but the issue is persisting. I've checked that Windows and all drivers are up to date, to the best of my ability to find current drivers for each component.

The Windows Event viewer indicates two Warning codes consistently, at the moment of every restart:

But I removed two USB Bluetooth adapters (a Zexmte generic adapter for my headset, and a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 2000 adapter for keyboard and mouse). Removing those made the BTHUSB error go away, but I have no reason to think it won't come back if I start using them again.

I've only experienced this issue when playing games. It doesn't appear to be tied to any specific in-game action, particle effects, or framerate. If I put Steam into offline mode and disable my Ethernet adapter, I can play seemingly fine, leading me to believe that the issue has something to do with my Ethernet adapter.

Windows 10 Update unsupported disk layout for UEFI firmware?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:24 AM PDT

Screenshot of error message and the situation in which it was recieved.

I'm not 100% sure where to start with this. I tried to follow a guide to convert the drive from MBR to GPT, both by trying the built-in tool in Windows and by using DiskPart in an elevated dos shell.

Both resulted in basically telling me that I had to reinstall windows 10 to change that. I'm not sure how this setting got changed, I've been updating my windows 10 fine for more than 2 years before this. I didn't notice any uptick in people seeing this error lately, so I know it's not something that changed on microsofts end. It has to be something I did on my end, or some software I have recently used.

My prime suspect stems from the fact that I recently tried and failed to clone my main OS drive, failing at exactly the step you probably think I did. When I was supposed to shut down and remove the old hard drive, the computer instead restarted and got super confused when it tried to boot windows, it took me a few days to sort that out. So I'm guessing during that is probably when I must have changed something that led to this.

I hope it's something easy, I think I heard something about just telling it not to boot in legacy mode or something like that, or maybe to boot in legacy mode, I can't remember for sure, but I haven't tried that. I can't remember where I saw that advice.

Despite all this I think I'm actually somewhat competent at this stuff, I just don't get the opportunity for a lot of practice.... generally something I'm happy about. But I know trying to solve all these problems myself is probably wasting a ton of time. And while I always learn a ton of cool new stuff, I rarely end up benefiting from that knowledge again before I forget it anyway. So I should probably just be getting help more often.

So, please somebody tell me I have overlooked something simple. My computer is hella worn-in and really comfortable, and I still planned on 2-3 more years of this computer before I had to start fresh again on whatever the next windows is by then.

Oh, probably important to note that my main OS hard drive is an SSD, specifically a Samsung 850 pro 512GB, my windows 10 is 64-bit, assuming windows even comes in not 64-bit anymore. Not sure if my motherboard matters for this, but it is an Asus Z170 deluxe, with bios version 3801.

I will unfortunately be unavailable for answers for the next 8 hours or so as I am typing this while I should already be sleeping. I hope I have given enough information in the mean time.

Edit: It also could have been a Bios setting I had to change in order to get the new Hard drive to work. Since it is an M2, specifically a Samsung 970 EVO plus. That might be when I had to change whatever legacy setting that one guide I can't find anymore mentioned? Also, I do still have to clone to that drive at some point. Is there any chance I can make this configuration change to that drive and have those settings survive the cloning process? or would the clone include changing those settings back to how this drive has them set?

Edit 2: Ok, I should probably actually go to sleep now. I don't have anything important to do, but it is now 5 am here, which has gotta be at least 2 hours past my bed time, lol.

Boot order is correct. Cables are working. Both usb and harddisk working in my other pc.

Wanting to confirm the issue before buying a new GPU

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:10 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I've had my PC now for almost 4 years. Withing the last 2 years I've had a issues with crashes/hang ups and freezes but now I think I've had enough (probably too late but hopefully not. I'm 99% sure that at least my GPU needs replacing, bare minimum, but I was wondering if anyone could help find a solution.

I cannot find a single root cause of the issue. I'll be playing games and then suddenly one of the following will happen:

    - The computer will freeze. The picture will remain frozen, I will hear a loud BZZZZZZZ sound and sometimes my mouse/keyboard will lose their lights.

    - The computer will freeze and go to a black screen (sometimes with sound playing). I will then no longer be able to get a signal until I restart it.

-The game will freeze, cut to black and then back to the desktop. I will have the Battlenet launcher (Blizzard games launcher) go completely see through (link to picture is here https://imgur.com/a/LWH7W7m )

Just today I've checked my Windows Updater and everything is updated. I've also uninstalled/reinstalled my AMD drivers but I still run into issues. I've been that it might be GPU related, motherboard related or memory related. Is there anything that I can do to rule out any of these issues before I spend money on more parts?

I'm not sure what exactly will help but I've listed my system information and my display information below.

    Thanks in advance
