Wi fi not working, "waiting for authorization"

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:30 AM PDT

Hi there, I'm quite new to the linux world and usually a friend of mine helps me out but at this moment he can't so I hope to find help here. I'm currently on KDE Manjaro 4.19.66, but neither upgrading packages or the kernel could sort this problem out.

My computer is an Acer Aspire 3 with AMD Ryzen 5 2500 and AMD Radeon Vega Mobile Graphics. I don't know how to get other tech specifics in case they're needed.

As can be seen on these screenshot (https://imgur.com/a/7TCTfmg), the wi fi does not work, reporting "waiting for authorization" and then these error messages pop up; I wasn't able to find a similar problem on the Manjaro forum or anywhere else.

This is not the only problem I encountered with my setting but it's what really bugs me out at the moment, really hope to find help here!

Load files to /var/www/html via FTP

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:38 PM PDT

On Ubuntu, what is the best way to create a user to load files for a website via ftp?

I've installed vsftpd and LAMP. I can connect via my primary user via FTP and set the directory to /var/www/html and I can download files, but when I edit and then try to save, 550 permission denied.

I've tried a few things and can't get there with permissions because I'm a n00b. Any good step by step instructions?

    the /proc/ folder

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 12:44 PM PDT

    Hi all,

When looking at the /proc/ folder, I can see a lot of numbered folders. My understanding is that these are for processes that have their own folders. However when looking in these folders, they seem to contain files with the same naming scheme. Is there anyway I can see what process a folder is for?

RasPi NAS behind DS-Lite with VPS Portmapper + DynDNS

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 11:22 AM PDT

    Hi all!

I'm trying to get my home NAS up and running, but ran into issues with ds-lite (ipv6 only). These are the steps i took:

    1. Install raspi + nextcloud, enable passwordless login
    2. Create all necessary port mappings for the raspi in my router (80,443 & 4443) and activate public IPv6 adresses for my devices
    3. Setup an external VPS to run 6tunnel for mapping the incomming IPv4 requests to the IPv6 adress + port of the raspi
    4. Setup a dyndns name with duckdns.org and point it to the VPS

I think this worked partially, because accessing the URI gives me a certificate warning which i cant skip as usually. Now trying to setup the Lets Encrypt certificates results in an error (failed authorization procedure)

What am i missing? Are there any additional steps needed for this to work? Thanks in advance!

What is the best way to secure your cryptocurrency seed/password on linux?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:28 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm have a Monero wallet, and I'm looking for a good way to store the mnemonic seed and the password for the wallet. And I kind of don't want to trust Bitwarden with that, not because I don't like the organization, but because of the some of the aspects of their software, like that you can ONLY change your master password via their website, or that their website uses google-analytics, or the general security flaws associated with browser extensions. I mean it's fine for the regular stuff like email/reddit etc, but for money I would like something more secure and private.

So how should I go about this? Would using GPG to just encrypt a text file on my computer, containing the seed and the password, be a good practice? Or is there a more secure and/or perhaps more convenient way?

    thanks in advance

What do you do to boost your security while connected to network?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:32 PM PDT

    Hi!

I am about to move to the biggest campus in my country, a place where 4000 IT students live and use the same network. I heard a lot of stories about the skilled ones and their passion to break into others' computers.

What could I do to keep my machine and data as safe as possible? Do you have any practices, tips, software you use? Do you have any resources I can watch or read to learn a bit? Do you have any experience with that?

I am not asking for advice like backing data, staying offline if possible and that stuff. I want to know Linux related things, which long time Windows user doesn't know and wouldn't really expect. I always see people talking about Linux as a safe OS, but I feel like being on the same network as guys that know Linux well doesn't really make it any safer..

Thank you for any help! Linux Noob

Linux Partitions and Windows Dual Boot

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 06:42 AM PDT

I've been messing around with installing Linux for the first time. I am dual booting Ubuntu with Windows 10.

I'm a bit in the dark with the partitions, I've allocated a 80gb partition for Linux.

Could somebody explain to me if I need and how I should setup the:

Boot partition, how much data should I use for that, should I install GRUB to that as a primary or logical boot

Swap partition, I use 4gb of ram on my device. Is this needed, what should I set it too?

    Home partition, is this needed?

All I have done so far is set the 80gb partition as root directory. Is that all I need to do, is the other partitions necessary?

    Packettracer crashes when launched

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 12:06 PM PDT

    Hi,

I need packettracer for my networking course, I managed to install version 7.1.1. However as soon as I launch and log in, the program crashes. 7.2.1 won't install due to a dependency issue, and as my machine can not have libpng12-0 installed (trust me, I have tried). Is this problem even solvable?

    Technical info:

    Packettracer version 7.1.1

    OS: Pop!_OS 19.04 x86_64

    Host: Dell Latitude 5580

    Kernel: 5.0.0-25-generic

Shell: bash 5.0.3 DE: GNOME 3.32.2

    WM: GNOME Shell

    Terminal dump:

xrandr changes connected devices names afrer restart.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 06:30 AM PDT

Using Manjaro (dual boot with Windows 10), i3wm and two monitors, connected with HDMI and DP to GPU. Every time i restart pc, it switches monitor names (DP-2 to DP-3). I'm not messing with cables though. It messes up every config file, where DP-2 is declared as primary monitor and resets display layout. How to get around that or fix this?

Wifi keeps disconnecting when put under load

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:44 AM PDT

I have a Thinkpad X1C4 running Manjaro 18.0.4 with Deepin DE and I'm having a couple of issues that all started a couple of weeks ago completely out of the blue. The biggest issue is that my wifi will disconnect if I stress it (downloading Steam games or something will result in a few seconds of downloading, then my wifi dies). There's a smaller issue where the time it takes from when I open my laptop to when the login screen appears went from near-instant to 3-5 seconds. Also, for some reason, I can see the app I was using before I closed my laptop for a fraction of a second before my actual login screen appears. Any ideas why? Thanks!

What encoding software would you recommend? (Excluding Handbrake, reason inside)

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:25 AM PDT

First of all, I don't want to use Handbrake because it doesn't support AMD hardware acceleration (at least on my GPU) and doesn't support VA-API, which says I can encode H264 and H265.

I don't really want to use ffmpeg yet because the learning curve is really steep, I just use it to cut videos right now. If you guys know any ffmpeg GUIs that would be great because some day I may move on to using the CLI tool.

I want to encode movies and TV shows so being able to properly select audio tracks, subtitle tracks, and chapters is important.

Booting Windows 7 with Grub4Dos or Syslinux

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:19 AM PDT

I have installed DebianDog(Squeeze based, 64bit) on an old laptop, that had Windows installed. The Windows partitions are in tact, and due to it's Puppy Linux like nature, it provides Grub4Dos and Syslinux as bootloaders. I prefer SL, but either will do in this case.
As I myself am used only to Linux, (this computer is for someone else,) and really haven't dealt with dualbooting to be honest, I have no clue how to do this, and all documentation seems to point either to Grub proper, and chainloading. I don't mind doing a bit of work, am not scared off by the shell or getting my hands dirty so to speak, I just don't know where to go/what would be my best option. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.
A few notes, it is a classic, old school bios, and though I forgot to check, I believe it is a 32 bit Win7, but I could be wrong. It is starter edition, if that helps.

I wanna get into Arch, what should I know?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:54 PM PDT

I'm not a total noob to Linux, I have a decent amount of experience with Debian/Ubuntu-based distros. My problem is that diving straight into Arch seems a bit daunting, but I feel like that distro would yield the most benefit, as it is pretty much a straight custom build of Linux. So, for someone who's never built Linux from scratch, what should I know?

For reference, my system is: Intel core i7-8750H 16GB DDR4 RAM (not sure what bus speed) 512GB NVMe SSD Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060

I have a bit of experience with Gnome and KDE Plasma, but I have little awareness of the numerous available DEs and Display Servers

I want to use Linux as my daily driver and Windows for gaming, but find most prebuilt distros as lacking and have a high preference for the latest software available.
