/var/log/journal size too big? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:54 AM PDT Currently /var/log/journal is over 2GB. Is this normal? Is it safe to try to erase some logs and what would be the safe way to do it? [link] [comments] |
How do I remove Applications icons? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:06 AM PDT I installed something called Electric Sheep using Wine. It didn't work as intended so I deleted the Electric Sheep folder created during installation (instead of uninstalling it) and now I have several leftover Electric Sheep icons in my Applications. Any idea how I can remove them? I'm on PopOS 18.04 EDIT : FIXED! I just had to go to ~/.local/share/applications/ and delete the .desktop files from there. (I had to reboot for the icons to disappear) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Aug 2019 12:13 PM PDT I tested Linux Mint on my laptop a few days ago. I couldn't get the WiFi to work. The only option available was for Ethernet; the system wouldn't show WiFi as an option to connect to the internet. I tried the Driver Manager update with no luck. I have the "realtek rtl8821ce 802.11 ac" network adapter. [link] [comments] |

External Monitor not Detected via eGPU on Laptop (Pop!_OS 19.04) Posted: 25 Aug 2019 10:11 AM PDT Hey everyone, I've got Pop!_OS installed on my Dell XPS 15 9560 and I've been hoping to use my external monitor with it via my eGPU (Aorus 1080 Box) to play games on. With the external GPU, all of my peripherals are working perfectly except the monitor. I've tried running xrandr and it appears the monitor is detected, but for some reason it isn't working. Since I am using a laptop with switchable graphics, and that Pop!_OS natively supports switching between the two, I have tried both, but neither of them change the fact that the monitor still doesn't work. The monitor does work perfectly fine on Windows, so I don't know what the problem is. I'm not very experienced with linux and/or programming so I hope I can find some help here. Thanks for any help in advance. [link] [comments] |
Sidetone option for headset? (or alternative) Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:20 PM PDT So I've been using Windows all of my life, and switched to Ubuntu (currently 19.04) on my laptop a few months ago. I like talking to my buddies on discord on my laptop and have found not being able to hear myself to be quite annoying. On Windows there's a way to enable it in Realtek HD Audio Manager by just redirecting the output to your headset. Now, I'm quite illiterate in terms of Linux, but am slowly getting there. Is there any way I can do this with any headset, with no latency? [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to change system settings from the terminal? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:43 AM PDT Say I want to change the time after which my PC goes into inactive mode when left untouched... Can this be done from the terminal? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:09 PM PDT When I try to suspend my computer using the normal GUI tool, it immediately wakes up (to the login screen, and somehow my networking is disabled). The ONLY way I have found to make it sleep is by running the aforementioned command. However, when I do that it wakes up without the login screen. This is not a big deal, but it is somewhat inconvenient to keep running this command and typing in my password whenever I leave my computer. How might I go about diagnosing/fixing this issue? PS: The shutdown GUI button does absolutely nothing. I have to use a command to shut down. [link] [comments] |

PC doesn't launch when a PS/2 keyboard is plugged in Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:31 AM PDT Hi, so I have a problem. I've got a old IBM keyboard I want to use with the PC (already restored), but everytime I plug it in, the PC when it boots, shows the Mobo manufacter symbol (in this case, Asus) 2 times, then goes straight into the Bios. Hardware:
OS: Arch Bootmanager: Systemd I don't think that the problem is with the OS, but still I will post here. And no, I don't have any other PS/2 keyboards to test. [link] [comments] |

Ubuntu: cannot get Samba to work Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:32 AM PDT Client : Ubuntu 19.04 When trying to connect to Server in Files using smb://192.168.1.x/sharename, I get a window popping up asking for credentials but it will not seem to accept any, no error message, just immediately goes to blank. Machine is definitely accessible via ping, etc. Weirdly, nmap does not see the server but nbtscan does. I can RDP onto the Windows 10 server using Remmina, no problem. [link] [comments] |

How to keep my data when installing Linux for the first time after Windows? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:26 AM PDT So basically, right now i have two partitions, one, where windows and apps are installed, and second, where all of my data is stored. I want to install linux(xubuntu in this case as my laptop is really old) instead of windows, but want to keep all of my files. how can i do that? is it similar process to windows? what i mean is that can that ntfs partition be usable in linux? Also since im here ill ask, are all of the drivers installed by itself, or do i need to do it manually? [link] [comments] |
Booting into Terminal after restart? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:21 AM PDT I have linux Mint, everything was going swimmingly, I'm a new user of Linux bare in mind. I needed to restart my machine, now everytime I do, instead of booting the desktop GUI i'm booted straight into a terminal. I don't know why this has happened. Anyone know of any commands I can run to find out what went wrong? I have a feeling It might be do to a space issue, so I could make the partition bigger in windows. Otherwise I'm out of ideas [link] [comments] |
Code editor between Nano and Vim? Posted: 24 Aug 2019 06:57 PM PDT Hi experts, I'm seeking a CLR editor that lays between Nano and Vim on functionality and learning curve. Nano is very easy but doesn't have a lot of code editing features, while Vim is very powerful (if I knew how to use it!), but as a hobbyist I do not have time to play with it everyday so it's difficult to learn quickly. I tried to install Slap, but failed at the attempts. Wondering if you have any recommendation? Thanks in advance! I'll need multiple-window support (and very easy to switch between them), some mouse support, and hopefully Windows-like control (Ctrl-C/V/P/etc. and Shift-Home/End) but OK if it's not. I know some basic Vim control (e.g. y and p) though. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Not sure how to install Vulkan drivers for Intel HD Graphics 6000 Posted: 24 Aug 2019 07:47 PM PDT From what I've read, my iGPU actually supports Vulkan, but I don't know how to install the driver. My very comprehensive DDG searches turn up nothing. Xubuntu 19.04 Intel i5-5250U w/ Intel HD Graphics 600 Running on an early 2015 MacBook Air [link] [comments] |
