    JSON Reader

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:00 PM PDT

Does anyone know the best application to view large json files on Linux? I used atom text editor but the file is really large and it keeps making my laptop freeze for some reason.

I have tried looking up recommendations online but I kept getting online readers and they all returned error messages when I tried to use them. (The error message has to do with the size of the file..exceeds the maximum requirement)

    —> Filesize: 200MB* —> File extension: json

—> My Laptop has 8gb of ram so I think it is not a memory problem

    • the cat utility work but it's difficult to read the data since it's not nicely formatted

    Linux Distro for old laptop

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 10:41 AM PDT

I recently found my Grandpas old Laptop and want to revive it for him with as a gift (he really loved that laptop). Sadly that laptop can barely lift windows xp so I would need a really light Linux Distro.

Specs: 256 mb ddr1 memory 40gb HDD (So no problem there) Intel Celeron M320 at 1.4 ghz

It would be nice to have an easily understandable version since my grandfather isn't the fittest guy in tech. I have some Linux experience myself so I can definitely set up one.

Steam Games Not Launching - Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:20 AM PDT

Okay, I've recently decided to dual-boot my old laptop with the above-mentioned distro of Linux Mint with the express purpose of playing some (linux compatible) Steam games (the hardware I'm using is so poor that Windows 10 is hogging the vast majority of resources). Steam appears to have installed perfectly fine, but I'm running into issues getting other games to run despite them being listed in Steam to work with Linux+SteamOS (Sunless Sea, Faeria), . I have a few titles that will launch no problem (CrossCode, Dex, Bleed 2, for instance). However, I have several that will not launch at all (the "Preparing to Launch..." pop-up will show and the screen will blink black for an instant, but then nothing happens).

How to check if my RAM is running in Dual Channel?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 06:00 AM PDT

I upgraded my laptops RAM memory from 8 to 16gb by adding 2nd stick of 8GB with the same model number as 1st. There doesn't seem to be information in BIOS(UEFI) that tells me that I am in DC mode. I checked on Windows with CPU-Z and it does state I am in DC.

My question is: is there a way to check if my memory is in Dual Channel on GNU/Linux? I am running Pop!_os(Ubuntu based distro).

    UEFI and full drive encryption

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 12:10 PM PDT

For a personal laptop that is connected to my wifi 99.99% of the time, what would I gain from using UEFI and encrypting my hard drive? Between programming and editing photos there is a lot of disk reads and writes and it would seem to just slow things down having to encrypt and decrypt the files each time they are updated.

    More than question about ricing.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 12:07 PM PDT

More than one question about how to ricing .

Hi, I have been a Linux user for some time now, but since I joined unixporn and since everyone talks about dot files to rice our distros better, and make them look awesome , I became even more interested on open source os. But!

And I am sure, I am not the only one on this situation , and yeah I'm talking about me and more people, DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE THEM OR WHAT ARE THEY .. LOL.

So, I have some 'specific questions' abut this topic making reference on how to use them on XFCE (Arch based ditros).

    - What is a dot file?

    - How do I use them?

    -Let's say I want to copycat this rice (I won't FYI) . https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/comments/85a436/xfce_on_gnulinux_both_terminal_gui_deserve/

-How do I use those dotfiles?

-Where do I go to start using them?

-What exactly do I have to modify with those dtofiles so I can start changing things on my desktop?

    - Why if sometimes I get themes folders from those dotfiles and add them to my .themes folder just won't work?

-On the rice I'm using as an example I can see a side panel with conky , I did download the theme and I put it in the .conky folder. I can't see it on conky manager to use it so I am assuming that I have to do something in a script maybe?

-How do I change the windows decorations using those dotfiles to decorate mine with something different than the regular O [ ] X ?

Etc etc etc .. I think u guys get my point , I would like to ask you to make nice and easy answers for newbies. I 've looking for tutorials but after not being able to find one where they explain like if I'm 4 years old I'm doing this post, and I'm really looking to learn how to make a crazy rice for my distro.

    Thanks .

BTW If you guys want, please post links of tutorials or videos if u believe it will be easy to understand them -tutorials in French, Spanish or English are more than welcome - :)

And please u guys can also write things down on in this thread , I'm not only looking for videos only or different websites.

    Question regarding Arch installation

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 11:53 AM PDT

So I'm at disk partition right now, so far so good. Assigning memory for EFI system partition, linux x86-64 root and SWAP, just like the installation manual suggests.

What's troubling me is, the size I assign for a partition and the size they get assigned are different. For ex, I tried to give 512MB for EFI partition, but it is given 488MB space. Same with other partitions as well; no matter what value I give to my SWAP it always has 1.9GB, and 110GB is the highest space I can assign for linux root while 102.5GB is the highest size it can get.

Aside the ~105GB memory I assigned, 8.2GB of freespace is left and I'm obsessed with it. I cant use it anywhere.

Is this how it is supposed to be? If not, how can I make use of the 8.2 gigs lying around? Ty in advance!

Suggest me app replacements for Debian-based OS, mostly audio applications.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 11:45 AM PDT

Undecided on the OS itself, as long as its stable release and works well with Cinnamon or LXDE (something that feels like windows + lightweight). I need suggestions to replace some of these applications that don't have a Linux version. Preferably one that has an emphasis on privacy.

    Video Player - PotPlayer

    Audio Player - Foobar2000

Any image editor to replace photoshop, something simple will do. Doesn't have to be robust.

    Audio Applications,

Tag&Rename - editing metadata of several music files

dbPoweramp - converting music files from one format to another (e.g. flac to mp3)

ExactAudioCopy - rip music from CDs

AlbumArtDownloader - snatch album art from several sites with ease

FL Studio 20 - does wine work with 20? All my searches end up with suggestions to get only FL 12 working.

    Others,

    Any PDF viewer

Any SFTP file transfer app (preferably with segmented downloading), and privacy focused.

Is there a need for an AV like malwarebytes? If yes then include it as well.

I've grown attached to these applications. I'm aware some could be run on WINE, are there performance differences? My primary concern is knowing I could get a replacement for these apps and ditch windows entirely. If you can't suggest for all of them, at least some of the apps that you really love and recommend for its flexibility and ease of use will do.

How do I fix my os-prober?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:12 AM PDT

    Hi,

Yesterday I asked about why my computer was restarting when running dpkg reconfigure, and didn't get a very helpful response.

I determined that I needed to disable the GRUB os-prober, so I went into /etc/default/grub and added the line "GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true", and that fixed everything. However, I feel like the os-prober should be operational (it runs by default, so it must be there for a reason), so although my computer functions without it, could anyone talk me through how to repair it?

    Thanks!

[Manjaro] Issues Installing 5700 XT Drivers

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 10:57 AM PDT

I've been having issues getting 5700 XT Linux drivers working on my Manjaro install.

I followed the directions here and now the system will no longer boot, even to ttyd.

I tried adding amdgpu to early KMS in mkinitcpio and trying to boot on kernel 5.2 and kernel 5.3.

I was previously using vesa drivers, but I uninstalled them to try and force the amd ones from above.

    So, I have two questions:

    1. Is there any way to get back to ttyd/the desktop without vesa drivers?

    2. Why is it not using the drivers I downloaded or why are they not working correctly?

I will provide screenshots of the bootup log when I get home and answer any other pertinent questions.

hi there, newb here. Inserting a variable into an alias?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 04:11 AM PDT

I have an alias set so that I can use xwinwrap without entering the full command each time. Thing is, I have multiple wallpapers, so how can I set an alias to execute the command "blablah... nameofgif.gif blah..."

    Wait a sec, that probably makes me sound like an asshole;

    okay, the command xwinwrap -g 1600x900 -ni -s -nf -b -un -argb -- gifview -w WID clonehigh.gif -a

where I want to replace the name of the gif with whatever gif I choose in the folder each time.

right now I just type xwin as my alias and that line executes. Can I customize this alias so I can choose a gif at point of command?

tldr - Customize alias to include different file each time?

    Ubuntu 18.04.3

    Thxdudz

Stuck at this screen when trying to boot to kde neon with kernel 5.2 or higher. Hp laptop with Amd ryzen 5 2500u

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:51 AM PDT

According to terminal Ubuntu installed in uefi mode however it only boots when legacy support is on in the bios. When legacy support is off it goes to windows repair which then deletes the Ubuntu partition which I have to reinstall.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:21 AM PDT

I have tried many things like deleting the windows bootloader running boot repair and formatting the boot partition but there seems to be some sort of built in mechanism to override everything unless legacy support is on. When I boot up and run the command to check it shows efi as a result and not bios.

Edit: forgot to add I can boot it with legacy support off by manually going to the efi.

Screensaver won't start after I awake my system from sleep in Manjaro i3

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:20 AM PDT

I'm using i3 window manager with Manjaro and have the lines exec --no-startup-id xset s 600 and exec --no-startup-id xss-lock -- i3lock in my config file for my screensaver. After I boot up it will work perfectly if I am not doing anything for 10 minutes. Eventually I will execute systemctl suspend to put my computer to sleep. Once I awake it, my screen will be on for over 10 minutes without the screensaver ever starting. What should I do to figure out how to get my screensaver to persist after I awake my computer from sleeping? Thanks.

Font awesome problems after installing texlive-full

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:08 AM PDT

Hi linux gurus, I'm on LMDE using i3wm and have some font problems. I installed font awesome (sudo aptitude install fonts-font-awesome), so now I can use the special characters/symbols like headphone symbol, terminal symbol etc. in my status bar (using i3blocks). However, I need LaTeX for work, so installed texlive-full, and then it ruined my special fonts. They look like gibberish now, both in the terminal, and in the statusbar. Any help on fixing this is highly appreciated. How can I have texlive-full installed and still use font awesome (or any other font with special symbols)?

I can’t figure out how to download Steam on Chromebook

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 11:03 PM PDT

I have no idea what I'm doing. This is my first time even hearing of Linux, let alone attempting to download and run things on it. Also my first Chromebook experience.

I'm on a Chromebook C434. I can find more information if you need it, but I'll be honest that I'm not much of a computer gal and don't know anything else other than that.

I used this tutorial to set up Linux, and used this tutorial for Steam. I was able to download GIMP, so I moved onto Steam.

Unfortunately I get "Malformed line 4 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (type)" whenever I type "sudo apt update." I tried googling solutions and trying them to no avail. So I then downloaded the Linux install off of Steam's website. That didn't work. It said there was no such file, or failed to retrieve app info. I tried moving the file into Linux's folder, tried to see files through the terminal, even tried /mnt/chromeos because why not, idek what it means. I've been at this for 2 hours and I'm ready to pull out my hair.

    Please help me.

    Thank you so much.
