Looking for a gaming laptop for between 600 and 800 euro. I live in the Republic of Ireland so it'd be ideal if it shipped to there. Ideally it should be able to run the new Borderlands

Laptop suggestion !!! Under £300 UK!

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 06:58 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

England, UK. Under £300 please. I'm looking for something fairly basic, will be using for very light school work and watching youtube so really trying to keep costs low.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

No 2-in-1 unless best option available. At least 4 hours battery.

I need Microsoft Office 365 (requires 1.6 GHz+ with 2 cores processor, 4 GB RAM ( Or 2GB RAM on 32 bit) and 4 GB Storage).

I also want to use Norton 360 security which requires 2GB RAM, 1GHz processor and 300MB Storage.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

Light as possible ! Current laptop is 2.2KG and its breaking my back. Under 1.5KG is ideal.

    2cm or under thickness

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows 10

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    Under 14", around 13"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

I need Microsoft Office 365 (requires 1.6 GHz+ with 2 cores processor, 4 GB RAM ( Or 2GB RAM on 32 bit) and 4 GB Storage).

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

    N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

Low storage is fine if I can add , for example, a 128 SD card

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I'm currently considering the Geobook 3

but I'm not sure if they are suitable to work with Office 365 and Norton 360 as detailed above.

    Many Thanks !!!!

    MSI GS65 - error 43 - Returning it

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:21 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my experience with the MSI GS65 to warn other users/buyers.

I bought the MSI GS65 8RF with the GTX1070 for my internship back in February this year. I'm a photo- & videographer so I needed a very powerful laptop and seen as I'm a gamer as well I quickly made the choice to buy the MSI GS65.

At first it was great, the GS65 beat all the Macbook pros that my colleagues used with ease.

But then the problems started... I can't really remember if I got a BSOD to set things off but anyways I got error 43. Windows completely shut off my GPU. I contacted NVidia and the only solution they had was to send me links to old drivers. After trying multiple drivers 419.67 DCH solved the issue. I installed it and error 43 disappeared. I updated the drivers again and the laptop worked for a week or two. Until the error came back...

I repeated this process time after time and was stuck in an endless loop. The last few weeks I didn't get the error as much and when I did get it all I had to do was update Windows and it would disappear.

Today my laptop froze while I was browsing the internet and when I restarted error 43 was back.

I'm sick and tired of trying to fix the issue myself so I'm sending it in for repairs. This means I lose it for at least 3 weeks... I'm very lucky to have a desktop PC but still, this is a big loss for me as a student-entrepeneur that works for multiple clients. I spend a lot of time at my girlfriend's so I really needed that laptop to work at her place.

I do hope I get the exact same laptop back seen as I had a touchpad cover and screen protector in place to protect the laptop. The keyboard cover I can take off easily so that is not an issue.

Anyways, that was my story... I hope this interests people or can help some people with the same issue.

Thanks for reading and feel welcome to respond!

    Greetings, Jordi

I spilled soda on my laptop....thankfully had warranty so I’m getting a check for the total. Help me make this decision!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States. Want to stay under $500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Pretty much best specifications for money. Admittedly I don't know much about computers.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. It's mostly for writing and watching Netflix and stuff. No editing or crazy gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The only game I've ever played is Stardew Valley

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm a simple guy. I truly just want a fast laptop that works well lol.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm currently stuck on three laptops. My brother in law is big into laptops and gave me these three.

I'm currently leaning more in the direction of the HP.

I most recently had an Asus X555QA which I really enjoyed. This is the link for that.

Help me decide XPS 15 vs X1 Extreme (gen 2)

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:29 PM PDT

    Hi

    I'm torn between buying the:

    • Dell XPS 15 7590 with an i7-9750H and 512 GB SSD (costs 1715€)
    • Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme (gen 2) with an i5-9300H and 256 GB SSD (costs 1860€)

Note, the differences in storage is not a big problem to me. I'm currently using a laptop with 256 GB SSD and it fits well. Anyway, if needed the storage can be upgraded. Apart from this, specs are pretty similar i.e. both have 8 GB of RAM which i'm going to upgrade myself to save a bit of money, and both have GTX1650 for graphics. The XPS performs better battery-wise but both should come with a reasonable battery life. I don't really care much about fancy displays, and both are equipped with a FHD (1920x1080) which is more than enough (to me at least). I like the looks of both. Finally, the thinkpad comes with its extraordinary build-quality.

The laptop will be used for my studies which involves statistical analyses of large data sets and different kinds of repeated simulations (nothing graphical). I will also be doing some soft programming. Besides this I would like to have the opportunity to game a couple of hours once or twice a week. In other words, gaming is a second priority. In addition, the games I usually play is old-school and requires nothing special. However, I would like to have the opportuinity to switch to something more demanding if need be.

The Dell seems to come with better specs and lower costs. However, I'm afraid it runs hot fast due to the i7 in such a slim laptop. I have heard its hot all the time and the fans are on constantly which is what scares me away from buying it. I have also heard that Dell's quality control is bad?
In contrast, the Lenovo is equipped with an i5 which might be a better fit for this type of laptops if I want to avoid heating/throttle issues? However, the i5 may become out-dated over time?

I hope you can help me out.

Question about security with a used laptop

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:24 PM PDT

    Hello,

I bought a used thinkbook T460s from a business that was upgrading their laptops. I have replaced the SSD, but I was just wondering if there was any way they could still monitor the computer through some IT software. Not super worried, but i just like to be careful about what they see on my comp.

    Thanks!!

    Laptop suggestions (up to 1k)

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:00 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Looking for a recommendation for a laptop which is future proof for at least 5 years + - I only really want to use it for photos and photo editing - therefore I'd like quite a large SSD (500GB minimum) and an i7. I'd also like it to have USB ports (as opposed to just usb-c).

How difficult is it to replace a display cable?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 12:59 PM PDT

Long story short, I was using my laptop (ASUS Q501LA), it wouldn't work right and I got pissed so I smacked it and the display shut off. I can see the backlight but nothing is showing up. Am I screwed or is this fixable? Thanks for help in advance.

Edit. Took it apart, checked some things out, and then restarted it. Not sure how or why, but the screen came back on. Lovely 😅

    Laptop upgrade help

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 12:04 PM PDT

Hi. I currently have a Lenovo laptop with an Intel Celeron N2840 processor, 4GB ram and a Hitachi Travelstar Z5K500 320GB HDD (SATA 2). Now my laptop has a SATA 3 capable drive bay, so I am thinking on replacing the current drive with a newer one, maybe a (WD blue) SSD or a SATA 3 HDD (7200rpm). My only concern with the SSD is, maybe the processor will bottleneck it, so I may be better off with a HDD. It might be a silly thing, I know, so I ask you guys for guidance. Thanks :-)

    CPU running hot while gaming

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:56 AM PDT

I have a GU501gm (Best Buy version) and recently my CPU has been hitting 85-90C causing stuttering while gaming. Temps on my GPU are 77C and stay constant there. Some games that I play are Destiny 2 and PUBG. I'm not sure if the games are CPU intense or something else is up. Anyone have recommendations on how to have CPU run "cooler"

MSI GS65 vs Aero OLED - Thermals and Battery

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:45 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new laptop this weekend, and I'm torn between the GS65 and the Aero OLED (1660 ti/16 gb RAM/512 gb ssd model of each). I don't particularly care about the display, but I do care about battery life and thermals.

Current considerations: I don't mind having to undervolt either, but repasting seems like a bit of a pain. I'm also not a fan of the upside down motherboard in the MSI, but I have heard great things about its keyboard which is a big plus for me. All things considered, the GS65 is ~$500 less than the Aero OLED. On the grounds of battery life, thermals, and longevity, is the Aero OLED worth it?

    Is my laptop dead?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:37 AM PDT

So last night on my way home, my water bottle spilled in my bag and my laptop was in the bag.

The laptop was in a laptop skin folder that covers it completely.

Last night I didn't think to check on my laptop because I was too tired and this morning when I got to the library, my laptop screen wouldn't come on when I press the power button, but the light on the power button as well as other lights on the laptop come on.

Does anyone know anyway to save my laptop or if it can actually be saved or should I start looking for a replacement laptop?

Asus laptop - Cant remove cover to remove battery

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:35 AM PDT

Hi! My Asus model ZX753V shut down this mor ing and won't start back up. I disconnected the power, tried holding power button for 30+ seconds, but to no avail.

I think it is one of those situations that can be resolved by removing the battery. However, after checking out some videos, I am stuck at removing the bottom cover. All screws have been removed and I can pry the bottom panel loose, but it won't come off. It seems that the panel is still stuck to the rest in the middle, but there is no screw there.

I haven't found any videos that specialize on removing this panel, so I am hoping someone can help me here.
