How do I install a different desktop environment, specifically KDE Plasma? Posted: 16 Aug 2019 08:27 AM PDT Good morning I am new to Linux and currently running parrot OS home. I would like to switch from the mate DE to KDE plasma. My understanding so far is I have to add the distro and probably install some other program to be able to switch DEs but I am not sure what to do specifically. Do DEs and window launchers have websites that say what distros to add and what programs are required to run install/run them? Any help is greatly appreciated for this Linux noob. help: Easy fix/scaling/distro on vmware on 4k monitor? Posted: 16 Aug 2019 11:00 AM PDT I tried centos, ubuntu and kodachi but i cannot scale it to 4k and/or the size is so tiny i get turtle neck by being so close to my monitor because the scaling is small. it will either scale to 4k but have microsopic font or it will not be able to scale near 4k with still tiny font or when logging/shutting down and running again everything is to the default 1080 with tiny fonts. I tried to find some solution online but either I can't find their suggested settings or the settings don't work. Are there any linux distro where there is easy scaling, permanent size fixing for vmware or virtual box to 4k? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Aug 2019 10:51 AM PDT This was basically the issue: https://askubuntu.com/questions/244261/how-do-i-get-my-hp-laptop-to-boot-into-grub-from-my-new-efi-file Specifically this post: I had this same problem with my HP Pavilion g6 when trying to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS and Windows 8. That is, even after "successfully" running Boot-Repair, I still had the notebook booting directly into Windows 8. If I pressed F9 before the HP symbol showed up, I was able to get into a Boot Menu (HP's menu? I don't know...) and from there, to select the "Ubuntu" entry, which in turn took me to GRUB 2 and finally to my Ubuntu installation. Still, I wanted to be able to have the computer boot directly to Linux, without the need for any user intervention. In the end, Rod Smith's answer above, combined with the information that I found in another forum, did the trick for me. I have Secure Boot disabled and Legacy Boot also disabled. This is what I did:
So finally I had my dual boot working with GRUB2. In case Windows overwrites the boot loader again after an update (as it did with me), I already know the steps to get grub back to its place. Hope this helps someone. Please let me know if there are any issues with my solution. [link] [comments] |
Accidentally deleted some panels on bottom right of screen Posted: 16 Aug 2019 01:16 PM PDT Solved it. Just had to add System Tray I am on Linux Mint, Cinammon I accidentally deleted some icons that were on the bottom right of the panel. It is near to were the time is. I think I right clicked an icon and pressed 'Remove.....' and now they are gone. My removable drives are still there but the icons I am missing are my VPN and Bluetooth, so maybe I deleted some networking thing. My VPN still works just the icon is gone. How can I get them back? thanks [link] [comments] |
TRying to patch st (simple terminal from suckless.org) Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:44 PM PDT I installed the alpha patch successfully (i think), but then after running the "make" command this shows up:
I have no idea what that says or how to fix it [link] [comments] |
A lightweight distro on a new laptop? Posted: 16 Aug 2019 02:50 AM PDT My question is simple: Does it make sense to install a lightweight distro like Xubuntu on a new, decent laptop that could easily run heavier ones? The background: I'm currently running Xubuntu on my old, dying laptop, and I really like XFCE. It's simple, it can be customized, it's intuitive for a Windows-refugee like me, etc. And it's perfect for this machine because it's very lightweight. But I'm getting a new laptop soon, and I was wondering whether it would make sense to just install Xubuntu again. Are there any downsides to running a lightweight distro on a less-than-lightweight machine? [link] [comments] |
Trying to install Manjaro and I get this screen whenever I try to boot Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:23 PM PDT |
Lubuntu x64 disk installs x86 system? Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:21 PM PDT I found my shitty old netbook and tried to make it alive, so I downloaded a 64 bit lubuntu and installed it. I wanted to install google chrome too, but it came back with architecture error. I launched the system information software and it says that the system is 32bits! Why or how did this happen? This shitbox has 64 bit processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM. [link] [comments] |
Help with my 32 bit problems with Linux mint. Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:07 PM PDT I really wanted to try Linux so I started looking for Distros. Manjaro 32 bit worked on a bootable usb but wifi didn't work for some reason and after some troubleshooting, I am sad to say I gave up. The driver was there but for some reason didn't work. So, I installed Linux mint (32 bit). Used rufus to put it on my usb, but my computer doesn't recognize it for some reason. I started looking around and found that manjaro 32 uses bootia32.efi and I haven't found that in linux mint 32. I haven't found a EFI/BOOT directory in it so I can even substitute some files so it can work. This is frustrating. Any help would be awesome! Details to help: Distro used : linuxmint-19.2-cinnamon-32bit laptop : Acer aspire switch 10 Rufus doesn't allow GPT for some reason. Manjaro 32 bit xfce worked well (except the wifi). Many thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Aug 2019 01:29 AM PDT A bit of background information, I some experience using ubuntu casually, but I haven't really felt like I've learned it nearly as much as I should or could have. I have decided recently to try and learn linux on more than a surface level. I want to eventually have using the command line and linux in general be as easy and natural to me as possible, and I realized that the only way to get there is to just use it on a daily basis. I've decided that the first step on this journey should be to wipe my computer clean and start fresh with a new os, so that 1. my mistakes made from copy pasting stuff from google to get random programs working don't get in my way and 2. I don't get back into the habit of using the gui instead of the command line for every little thing. With that being said, I was hoping that debian might be the solution as it seems to not come with too much stuff preloaded and doesn't feel too much like ubuntu or windows, but it isn't too difficult to use either. Am I on track here, or should I default to a different distro for now? [link] [comments] |
Why doesn't ubuntu recognize my windows machine? Posted: 16 Aug 2019 11:39 AM PDT My ubuntu comp is plugged into my router, which is plugged into my windows machine. I can ping my windows machine from my ubuntu machine and visa versa, but for some reason I can't get my windows machine to appear in nautilus nor can I get any other applications to recognize the windows machine (Remina, vnc viewer) . I want to be able to at least transfer files back and forth, and ideally run the windows machine remotely. [link] [comments] |
Gentoo: eclean-kernel unable to mount boot Posted: 16 Aug 2019 07:19 AM PDT I've updated the kernel to 4.19.66 (gentoo-sources) and would like to clean up some old kernel files. I installed app-admin/eclean-kernel and when I run it, it gives me this: My fstab entry for boot is this: Does anyone know why eclean-kernel is not working here? I can confirm that /boot is mounted. A good compatible printer for Linux? Posted: 16 Aug 2019 10:36 AM PDT What is a good compatible printer for Linux with low cost or inexpensive ink? I have read that HP printers work out of the box, some Canon printers also. The HP cartridges usually cost more than the printer itself! What do you recommend as a good printer, yet, low cost on ink cartridge? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
how to increase graphics perfromance? (intel HD620 / L.Mint) Posted: 16 Aug 2019 01:44 AM PDT Hey, Im currently running a dualboot Win10/L.Mint because from time to time I like to play a round of cs:go. Im using a ThinkPad with i5-7200U processor, HD Graphics 620 with Intel-microcode v.3.2.190618 drivers on Linux Mint 18.3. Afaik there are no other proprietary drivers since the Intel drivers are already open source and I cant find any tools to adjust graphics settings under Linux. No idea where to go from here.. I also wonder if the low fps have something to do with the power management since its a laptop (plugged in). I cant find any settings to adjust either. Any ideas how to boost performance? How do I prevent my PC from running startx as soon as I log in? Posted: 16 Aug 2019 10:24 AM PDT For reference, I am running Manjaro with i3. I am having an issue with my PC where as soon as I log in, I get a fatal server error saying that no screens are found and then it pauses for a bit and goes back to the log in screen. How can I prevent it from running startx so I can actually open the log files and figure out what is going on? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 Aug 2019 08:46 AM PDT I installed redshift in antiX from synaptic with all dependencies. I tried configuring it in terminal putting my latitude/longitude but it didn't work. I got this mesage " using method randr" but it didn't work. Then I tried configuring light directly using "sudo redshift -O 2000". It worked for a couple of seconds, but then i got the same message "using method 'randr' " and my screen returned to original blue-ish light.. How can I configure randr in order to make redshift work properly? My current resolution is 1024*600 60.03 fps (it's an old computer it can't be any higher than that) What should I do? Is it a drivers problem? Or is it related to antiX not having systemd? Should I use a different program? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
