I want to set up a linux server, where should I start? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 12:11 PM PDT Hi, in my pursuit of privacy and FOSS I turned to linux and more privacy conscious software. So I wanted to set up a home server for stuff like hosting a Minecraft server, running a local instance of something like nextcloud for file storage, and something like plex or jellyfin for movie watching. So where should I start with this? I'm already somewhat familiar with arch, as I use it as a primary OS on my desktop, but from a lot of people I heard that arch isn't a great choice when it comes to running a server (yet I haven't had any problems with arch yet like crashing or anything), and thus most people recommend debian. Is that a good distro choice? Which one should I pick? Where can I learn about setting up a server? There are some guides perhaps? Where should I start? [link] [comments] |
Why does my text look like this? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:00 AM PDT https://i.imgur.com/jXuGRgd.jpg I'm trying to do an assignment on McGraw Hill Connect through Firefox on Fedora 30, but the text is unreadable. What's the issue here and how can I fix it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2019 03:47 AM PDT Hi, Silly question perhaps. But in an effort to learn something different I decided to install Debian without DM as to be forced using bash, on purpose. I installed ffmpeg, mplayer. But when I want to watch a video, it won't render the video, it does the audio well. Do I still need to install X11 and run mplayer? I tried -vo vdpau, gl_nows, etc. But to no avail. [link] [comments] |
What is causing my system lockup? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 09:35 AM PDT Xeon X5650 16GB RAM R7 370 with AMDGPU drivers Manjaro 18.0.4 with Deepin DE All temps are fine If I'm playing games with Proton, my PC loves to lockup to the point where I can't even move the mouse and have to hit the reset button on my case. I'm not sure what's causing my lockups but it only happens when gaming with Proton; TF2 never, ever crashes, but GTA V, EVE Online, Everspace, and BeamNG all make my system crash. Does anyone know why this is happening? This is the log from "journalctl -b -1" with 6-7 minutes of log from before the crash, and a few minutes from after (I think it crashed around 12:18, not 100% sure): If there's some other info I can provide please let me know, because I am desperate for a fix. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Is there any way to shorten the time a script takes to execute? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:04 AM PDT Hi, I recently discovered this pretty cool script, and I immediately decided to switch the orginary i3-lock with this slightly modified version. I have a key binding that when pressed firstly launches i3-lock then immediately after executes "systemctl suspend" command, in order to put computer to sleep. Normally it's all done instantly, but when I'm using this script, it can take up to 10 seconds to execute the script. That said, I have old hardware, but 10 seconds? Does it take as long for anyone else or is this just my old cpu? And is there any way to speed up the process? thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Linux Mint 19.2 only boots in compatibility mode, how to install? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:24 AM PDT I currently have a AMD Ryzen 5 2400G CPU and an ASRock B450M Pro4 Motherboard. When I boot LM from a live USB the screen goes black and nothing happens. In compatibility mode everything works fine. How can I install LM like that? I'm scared that booting won't work when I install it from compatibiliy mode. [link] [comments] |
“If i switch to Linux...” Questions Posted: 26 Aug 2019 06:03 PM PDT i have a Mac and have been a fanboy for a time now, but as Apple slides to becoming a credit card company, it seems i may consider what else is out there. So, if i install Linux on my 2012 retina mac book pro, what software, guides, tutorials should i use for things such as:
i am a designer so command line is weird to me at the moment, but i get what it does because of my exposure to Git and NPM. Basically, where do i start? Which distro? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Freezing shortly after boot after trying to install Optimus Manager Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:48 AM PDT Running Manjaro KDE on my Omen 15 laptop that has an i5 6600 and a GTX 1050, pretty close to stock setup (only just installed and was busy loading up the programs I needed instead of tweaking with the OS.) The title moreorless covers it, I followed the readme as per Optimus Manager's official GitHub, rebooted, and now my system freezes ~30 seconds after reaching the login screen. The only thing I can think I may have done wrong is not switching drivers in the Manjaro Hardware settings, but now I can't rectify that since my system locks out almost instantly. Is there anything I can do or do I need to nuke and reinstall? I have the live USB still if I can use that to help fix the problem. Sorry if I've left out any details, feel free to ask [link] [comments] |
Having two grubs on my dual boot pc Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:33 AM PDT Hi all, So I'm having a problem with my grub/bootloader, I have to say that I don't quite understand them but I'm trying to learn. I had Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 dual boot on my HP Notebook 15. I didn't face any issues with the grub back then, I used the grub that Ubuntu provided. After I while I decided to remove the Ubuntu partition and replace it with Manjaro, so what I did is that, 1) deleted the Ubuntu partition with the help of Windows' Disk Management and created a new partition out of some of the free space for the new Manjaro partition, 2) With the help of a Windows Live USB and used the Command prompt and with the help of this article I tried to fix the bootloader. but for some reason the bootrec /fixmbr always gave a "Access denied" error, so that step wasn't ran successfully, and I tried every solution I could find on the internet.... After this configuration, I installed Manjaro and I ended up with basically two grubs. First off when I press F9 to select which OS to boot from, it still had the Ubuntu name although I have deleted it an installed Manjaro instead. So when I select Ubuntu from the F9 menu, which is the default first choice, I get a grub CLI screen which I, for the past 3 days have been entering the same commands in order to boot Manjaro, which can sometimes be on hd0, hd1 or hd2. After that I have entered those commands, I get the Manjaro grub, then I can boot and login to Manjaro... Can someone please help me fixing this issue? [link] [comments] |
Issue with cloning a CentOS 7 server from DigitalOcean to Virtualbox Posted: 27 Aug 2019 11:04 AM PDT Warning: Long, figuring out as I go question below: I have a CentOS 7 server in DigitalOcean and have configured it appropriately. Now, I want to clone it so I can make a local Virtualbox VM for testing changes before making them to my DigitalOcean server. Here's what I've tried:
I was thinking that maybe my Grub MBR was corrupted, so I tried rebuilding it using this guide: https://www.tecmint.com/recover-or-rescue-corrupted-grub-boot-loader-in-centos-7/ When I tried the above guide, I got this error: /sbin/grub2-install: error: hostdisk//dev/sda appears to contain a xfs filesystem which isn't known to reserve space for DOS-style boot. Installing GRUB there could result in FILESYSTEM DESTRUCTION if valuable data is overwritten by grub-setup (--skip-fs-probe disables this check, use at your own risk). I started reading about that error and it seems like the Grub/MBR stuff might not be relevant if you have XFS disks and they would have different boot loader configurations. I confirmed that our DigitalOcean server's disks are both using the XFS filesystem with df -TH It also looks like /etc/fstab might refer to the UUID of the DigitalOcean server's hard drive. I tried changing this value in VirtualBox VM to match the UUID of the Virtualbox VM. TLDR: Is there any easier way to go about cloning a Linux server from DigitalOcean to Virtualbox? I am running into one issue after another and am feeling pretty stumped. I've read that Clonezilla is a good tool but I don't think I can boot from an .iso on my DigitalOcean server. Any ideas at all would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Aug 2019 10:08 AM PDT I have a dual-head setup that works perfectly when I have X (plain Openbox WM) but I quite often use the framebuffer console aswell. my problem is the following: the two screens show the same thing in this scenario, like mirroring and I appear to have only one framebuffer device. would it be possible to make it appear as two independent devices and use it somewhat like tmux (two parallel shell instances) that I can switch between? or even just have the second one linked to a second framebuffer device, I am okay with just cat /dev/fb0 > /dev/fb1 to "screenshot" the current session thanks in advance, I am not exactly familiar with the mechanisms of graphics so I am pretty much lost here [link] [comments] |
Oracle VM Box Ubuntu keyboard problem Posted: 27 Aug 2019 03:08 AM PDT Hello , I use Linux Mint 19.1 cinnamon on my own personal computer, I had to install ubuntu on my computer and I installed ubuntu 19.04 in oracle vmbox. However, it did not automatically detect the keyboard during installation. I cannot enter my password to the terminal when I run the terminal. This means that no key on the keyboard is pressed. How can I prevent this? I'm dropping the screen shot down, thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
First Time Dual Booting Linux and Bootloader Question Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:53 AM PDT I tried installing Ubuntu for the first time yesterday. I've partitioned my drive so I use Windows on one and Linux on the other. Sadly I ran into trouble with the bootloader and performance, a few questions; When installing Ubuntu, on the something else section I selected the fresh partition I already made on Windows, EXT4 file system. Is setting that as the root directory with " / " enough or do I need a "Boot", "Home" etc. Partitions too? After restarting from installation my device boots straight into GRUB, which often crashes and a massive drop in performance when booting into either Windows or Ubuntu. Is that normal, is there a way too boot straight into Windows bypassing GRUB? [windows is my main OS] I had to restore a pc backup after the problem with GRUB so I'm going to try again. Also torn between Debian and Ubuntu, Debian preferred for Privacy. After looking on Debians website I couldn't see a whole lot of information on updates and support, for long term which distro' out the two would be better, any guides, suggested software to lock down Ubuntu for security? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Distro hopping without breaking dual boot Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:37 AM PDT Hi, I need to upgrade to the lastest version of Linux mint manually (or I might try fedora), but I don't want to make my windows partition shit the bed. I don't normally need windows, but sometimes I do. Is there a way to just install mint to my current Linux partition without messing with GRUB or Windows? [link] [comments] |

Dual booted Ubuntu and Windows but Grub menu won't show no matter what I do Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:38 AM PDT I have dual booted many times years ago and it worked but this time when I tried it, grub wont start and it loads Ubuntu directly. To boot Windows I had go to boot menu and select OS boot manager. After 2 days of research and trying every method online, I found that it may be because I have only 100MB EFI partition and to increase its size I have to reinstall windows which I cant do right now. So I uninstalled Ubuntu and fixed windows startup using EasyBCD. What should I do inorder to fix grub? Boot repair shows an error, creating another EFI partition for Ubuntu doesn't work. I just want to see the Grub menu working [link] [comments] |
Desktop Environment with good 4k Scaling (other than KDE)? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:21 PM PDT Hey all. Been trying to get working on switching to Linux for my work machine, but running into one surprisingly annoying thing, and that is scaling for 4k monitors. 140% scaling looks the best to me. KDE supports this quite fine, but I've been running into glitch after glitch and I'm just fed up with it (things like menus opening in incorrect spots, keyboard shortcuts ceasing to function until a restart, little annoyances like that). I like Gnome and I've heard with Wayland you can do incremental scaling, however I run an Nvidia GPU and I've also heard Wayland does poorly on those. So before I resign myself to a life full of Windows, does anyone have any suggestions? Anything I can find on the DuckDuckGo machine seems to date back to 2018 at best, so hoping the real bummer results I've been reading aren't true anymore. Thanks a million! [link] [comments] |
Force lutris to run hearthstone on integrated graphics, instead of raden Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:21 AM PDT I want to force lutris to use the iGPU, as hearthstone doesn't require the dedicated gpu to run well, but disabling the "discrete graphics" option in lutris still runs the game on my amd gpu. LUKS blank screen after opening laptop Posted: 26 Aug 2019 11:01 PM PDT So I have a full drive luks encrypted debian installation and whenever I close the laptop lid and then later when I reopen it, I just get a black screen. If I suspend my session and then close the lid, it's fine and I'm shown the greeter. However if I just close the lid, it will be black upon reopening the lid. I can not find any information relating to black screens on lid openeing specifically regaurding LUKS. I don't mind suspending the session and closing the lid, it's not much of an inconvience, but if there is a qay to fix it I'd like to do so. Thanks [link] [comments] |
