Helping a friend choose between two laptops (HP vs Lenovo) Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:54 AM PDT My friend's trying to decide between HP Envy x360 (13.3") and Lenovo Ideapad 330S (15.6"). This will be for heavy browsing purposes, and occasional casual gaming (Sims 4?). I own a Dell Inspiron 7567 but in terms of specs I think it's a bit too different from the two, so I don't trust my input. Any help/opinion/insight would be helpful! Both of the laptops have:
She wants the HP Envy x360 because:
She wants the Lenovo Ideapad 330S because:
We're aware of the difference in pricing for the two products, and I listed the specs they would have in common because she's already planning to upgrade the Lenovo's RAM and SSD to match that of the HP. My friend has no problems with either, in terms of pricing, but doesn't want to regret getting the HP just because it looks better or the Lenovo over a slight difference in specs. In terms of longevity and durability, which of the two would be recommended? [link] [comments]
Help me choose among these 3 laptops Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:43 PM PDT I will do casual stuff on them. Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:28 PM PDT I am looking to purchase an M.2 drive for this laptop ( HP 2015 Star Wars Laptop i7 15.6 inch 15-an051dx https://www.amazon.com/HP-Special-Darkside-15-an051dx-GeForce/dp/B01KUV4RYS) and I am trying to figure out what drives are compatible with this. I am finding conflicting information in the different "manuals" HP provides. Any links to just some drives I could purchase or where I should look to resolve this issue would be fantastic. I'm trying to prepare this laptop for school and it's just around the bend. [link] [comments]

Surface Laptop 2 (i5+ 8gb RAM+ 256gb) or Asus Zenbook 14 (i7+16gb RAM+ 512gb)? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:11 PM PDT I'm deciding between the Zenbook 14 (UX433FA-DH74) and the Surface Laptop 2. The Zenbook 14 is $100 more than the surface laptop 2. The 14 has an i7 and 16gb of RAM with a 14 inch display. The surface has i5 and 8gb of RAM with a 13.5 inch display. Neither has a dedicated GPU. The storage capacity isn't that big of a deal to me since 256gb would be enough for me and 500gb is like overkill. The most intensive thing I would be doing on the laptop is watching a YouTube video with some webpages open in the background. Once in a while I may play an old school nostalgic video game on it like Simpsons hit and run or something. I would mainly be using it for research and school work. I pretty much carry my laptop with me everywhere. So portability is also a consideration. The 14 inch model weighs 2.6 lbs and the surface is 2.7lbs. The Asus has lots of mixed reviews online with some people saying the trackpad is horrible and skips a lot. I would only be using the trackpad in class as I normally carry a mouse with me. Pretty much everywhere I look the Surface laptop 2 has great reviews despite its lack of ports. Will the surface laptop 2s 8gb of RAM and an i5 be enough for my workload or should I shell out the extra cash and get the 14 inch Asus with an i7 and 16gb of RAM. I want a laptop that will last at least 5 years and this will be my main computer as I don't really use my desktop anymore. I'm thinking that if the build quality on the surface laptop 2 is superior and since it has a better keyboard and trackpad, it may be a better buy for my usage despite the lower specs Sorry if this is the wrong sub [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Aug 2019 11:37 AM PDT I recently received an OLPC XO, as the original owner did not want it anymore and was willing to give it to me for free. I repaired it, and now I would like to reimage it to change the operating system from a children's toy to the equivalent of an Eee PC. I was planning on installing Windows XP, and I just cant figure out how to reimage the computer. Any tips? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Aug 2019 11:01 AM PDT I've been using a 2011 iMac 27inch computer as my main computer throughout all of high school and used it for gaming as well, CSGO, at around 200 FPS. Bootcamped as well though... but I'm looking for either Mac or windows os, don't mind, and I'm looking for a computer for everyday use for anything possible. Video editing, photo, gaming, work. I was looking at the MacBook Pro 13in for 1400 with student promo or the razer stealth 13 for 1300 dollars. Both have a slick model design, great specs, but razer has significantly better. Lightweight if I recall correctly, long battery life. And it has a better student promo discount. If there are any better laptop options that are max 1500, please suggest any possible options as I will be most likely be using this laptop for the next four years for college and personal use. Something durable and would really appreciate any suggestions that could be better. Also lightweight, long battery life, and nice in design would be a plus as well. Thank you in advanced! Additional cooling options worth it? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:48 AM PDT I'm looking at buying an MSI GE75 Raider from Xotic PC and was wondering if their additional cooling upgrades would be worth it, since some reviews of the model said it can run hot. I'd rather save the money if it won't make a big difference in the heat, but I hang onto laptops for 3-4 years so if it'll extend the life of it it's probably worth it to me. These are their options:

Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:43 AM PDT I bought the Lenovo 2 in 1 (13 inch, i5) on sale for $700. The Pavillion (14 inch, i5) is on sale for $525 right now. Should I return the Lenovo for the Pavillion for the price difference? I'm looking for something i can do basic things on. Watch youtube, take notes in Onenote for books I'm reading, browse the internet, etc. Something not too big. Portable. [link] [comments]
ROG Strix Scar III Touchpad not working Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:26 AM PDT Hi all, Yesterday, my new laptop just arrived. Everything was working perfectly fine until last night. I just finished playing some games and unplugged the charging cable from the laptop and got ready to watch some netflix. After doing so, I realized that the touchpad no longer responds to anything I try to do with it (scrolling, gestures, moving the cursor, etc). However, I can still left and right click using the touchpad. I've tried to find videos on how to fix this, I've checked and the touchpad drivers are up to date but it still cannot be used to move the cursor. I have to use a mouse. I've also checked that the touchpad is enabled. Any idea on how to fix this? [link] [comments]

A Windows laptop version of a MacBook? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:26 AM PDT Are there any laptop models that are similar to macbooks in terms of durability and battery life? I love the MacBook's design but I prefer Windows. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:03 AM PDT Hey, I'm an electrical engineering student who does a good amount of stuff on VMs and MATLAB. I have a PC that I usually used ( i7-4790k, GTX 970) and I absolutely love it's performance - never ever has it even hiccuped for a second. Now, I need something portable that can give me a similar peformance feel but will also last me another 4ish years for a possible phd program (very heavy on simulations - lots of matlab). I will not be doing any heavy gaming whatsovever on it (maybe MAYBE some league of legends). The laptop I have in mind is an XPS 15 with the 8750H (will upgrade the RAM). However, the user reviews for that are ridiculously bad. I then looked at the Lenovo X1 Extreme which is a competitor to the XPS 15 - however in Europe, prices for that start at 2400 Euros (?????) so that's 100% out of budget. I'm looking for something below 1600-1700 Euros (if theres a student discount even better). Should I go for the XPS 15 (new one with 9750H or old 8750H) or is there something similar to the Lenovo X1 Extreme with an 8750H and is reliable. I saw the Lenovo Y740 - looks great but too gamery. Blade 15 looks amazing but again reddit reviews are horrible and seems like a waste since I won't be gaming. I really don't have much need for a GPU at all. Battery life of 5-6hrs of browsing is fine. Don't care about speakers. Need a USB-C port for dock to run multiple monitors (preferably with usb C charging). Don't care about screen as long as it's 1080p - preferably IPS and small bezels. Don't want it too thick but I don't mind it being thicker than the XPS 15 (just not Lenovo P72/P52 level thick - that's too thick). Don't care at all about speakers. [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:15 AM PDT My cousin has this HP laptop (Pavilion dv4-2045dx) for years now. Just a few months ago, my cousin's laptop's screen started to have these vertical lines on the taskbar (below the screen). Last month, the screen started flickering that's why she can no longer use it. We thought it was an LCD problem (not graphics card) because when I connected it to my TV via HDMI, the TV did not show the vertical lines/flickering. She just bought a new screen on Amazon (East Coast LCDs) for the laptop. I have experience in replacing laptop screens (I successfully installed my old laptop's replacement screen over a year ago) and the new screen doesn't work even though the old (flickering) screen does. I contacted East Coast LCDs through their number. I told them the issue. They told me that it may be an inverter problem all along that's why the new screen does not work. Luckily I found an inverter online. It will arrive in a few days. What do you guys think is the problem? Can you give me any advice? Is it really the inverter? or the screen that they sent to my cousin is defective? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
