I want to switch to Linux from Windows. Pop!_OS or Ubuntu?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 04:27 AM PDT

    Hi all!
I have never used Linux on one of my computers and want to try it out...
I am considering between using Pop!_OS and Ubuntu :D

I will mainly use them for web-dev, browsing the web, and some light gaming. It's important for me for the experience to be as seamless as possible.

(I use a Ryzen CPU and Nvidia GTX GPU)

Why is KDE Neon the only distro that properly suspends my laptop when the lid is closed?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:18 PM PDT

So the laptop in question is a Thinkpad Yoga 11e... a slow, horrible computer right out of the box no matter what OS is on it. I have tried every gosh darn distro from Arch to Zorin with absolutely no luck. They will not fully suspend the laptop when it is fully closed, and you will be greeted with a black screen when you open it and try to resume (no, I can't even bring up a command prompt). The only distro that suspends and resumes the laptop properly is KDE Neon. I don't know enough about Linux to know what it is about this distro that sets it apart from others. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

How to resize root partition after installation in Linux mint?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 04:38 AM PDT

I decided to try out Linux around a week ago and installed on my laptop as dual boot with Windows 8. Since I wasn't sure if I'd like it I sacrificed only around ~40gb from my Windows drive, and gave 10 gb to my root partition, 6 gb to swap and the rest to home, since I thought that'd be enough. However, I've found that 10 gb for root is way too little, since I'm always running into problems related to lack of space on the root partition. I don't understand why even though the folder for "downloads" is in the /home partition, downloading files from the web browser also decreases the root partition. Once I was downloading a huge file from Firefox that ate up all my remaining root space and the system just froze for solid couple minutes until the message "There is 0b of free space left on the root partition" appeared and everything went back to normal and the download failed. I came to enjoy using Linux Mint quite a bit and thus I'd like to give more space on the hard drive, but I'm not sure how to go about it without reinstalling the entire system again.

    Linux Mint and Polybar

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:38 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm a fairly new linux user and I want to install polybar on cinnamon. As far as I understood it I need to build it from source with terminal commands as written here

Everything goes well until $ cmake ..

It gives me this error message:

    -- Trying to enable ccache

-- Couldn't locate ccache, disabling ccache... -- The CXX compiler identification is unknown CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:23 (project): No CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER could be found.

Tell CMake where to find the compiler by setting either the environment variable "CXX" or the CMake cache entry CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER to the full path to the compiler, or to the compiler name if it is in the PATH.

Obviously the problem is with the compiler but I'm stuck on what to do here :(

    How to upgrade graphics card?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:28 PM PDT

I'm trying to upgrade my Nvidia GTX 760 to a 1060. I've got Linux Mint dual boot with Windows 10. When I just unplug my old card and put the new one in, Windows works flawlessly but Linux crashes when I try to start it. Swapping the old card in makes it work again. How can I fix my Linux install to accept the new card?

Trying to install Openvpn on my new raspberry pi 4.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:54 PM PDT

I have a raspberry pi 4 running the latest (as of last week) version of Raspbian. I'm a complete neophyte to pi's and linux... although I vaguely recall some 25 year old unix memories.

I'm trying to install and set up OpenVPN so I can use Private Internet Access on my new pi 4.

I've been more or less following these instructions: https://dotslashnotes.wordpress.com/2013/08/05/how-to-set-up-a-vpn-private-internet-access-in-raspberry-pi/

After navigating some missing info and typos, I've managed to get as far as step 5, and here are some results:

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3180 Apr 5 13:44 'US Atlanta.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3183 Apr 5 13:44 'US California.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3180 Apr 5 13:44 'US Chicago.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3179 Apr 5 13:44 'US Denver.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3177 Apr 5 13:44 'US East.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3180 Apr 5 13:44 'US Florida.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3180 Apr 5 13:44 'US Houston.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3181 Apr 5 13:44 'US Las Vegas.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3184 Apr 5 13:44 'US New York City.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3180 Apr 5 13:44 'US Seattle.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3186 Apr 5 13:44 'US Silicon Valley.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3178 Apr 5 13:44 'US Texas.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3185 Apr 5 13:44 'US Washington DC.ovpn'

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 3177 Apr 5 13:44 'US West.ovpn'

What's my next step from there? Copy pasting the instructions listed gives me an error:

Options error: In [CMD-LINE]:1: Error opening configuration file: config-sever-filename.ovpn

I'm kind of sure I need to substitute the name of my desired location, but random guessing has been slow to yield results so far.

Thanks in advance. I hope to someday be able to help the next dummy noob

    Edit: Formatting

I don't want to see grub, I want to automatically boot into kubuntu

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:49 PM PDT

I have a windows install on a separate SSD, and kubuntu on another one. I want to 'remove' grub, like on pop_os and just use the bios boot options to select my OS.

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: I succeeded in hiding grub, but it still waits 10 seconds before starting to load kubuntu.

Timeshift restore went nuts. Is there any hope left ?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:13 PM PDT

    Beware:

I'm not native English speaker, so feel free to help me correct linguistic errors.

I'm noob, so if I missed an important detail, I will correct this as soon as you let me know what I missed.

I failed to find solution to my problem elsewhere, so I look for your help hear.

(again) I'm noob, I may not understand what you are/ I am saying.

I'm thankful for your time spend to read this post and or help me, so

    Thank you!!!

    The story:

I installed my Arch nearly an year ago after trying out manjaro. I discovered window managers and went dawn the rabbit hole. I used LARBS to get confy setup. I liked (and still like) it but I wanted to try something new. After messing up my configs I tried using my backup. I used Timeshift for the first time and went with defaults. Screen got covered with all the files that were been copped. I left my pc to let it do its thing. It should reboot, but it didn't and I thought that I miss read something and than I rebooted it manually. After rebooting I ended with the massage „error: file '/boot/grub/x86\_64-efi/normal.mod' not found. Entering rescue mode...". Seeing that I thought that Timeshift's defaults messed up my bootloader, so it was time to fix grub. Using live environment I wasn't able to arch-chroot my install, no bin/bash. My system missed important file and my /home was empty. I burned another iso on my usb to use timeshift-gtk again, but there were no snapshots on harddrive where I stored them.

My setup: Software: Archlinux+LARBS (Luke Smith's rice)

Hardware: Razen 2600x, Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming, Adata SU650 (240GB SSD), two recycled HDD

    What I can see:

    not booting system,

    important files missing,

    empty /home,

empty partition where I stored my snapshots

    What I think I see:

    I interrupted restore process.

    Maybe hdd failure.

    What I did:

    I tried arch-chrooting my install.

    Running timeshift restore again,

Partially reinstalling system to run timeshift on it again (still not booting),

a lot of scanning through archwiki and other sources, with little understanding of what I was reading,

    Looking for bug reports.

So... how to do more diagnostics and if possible how to get my system restored ?

    Noob in need of help!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:02 PM PDT

Hey everyone hope it's okay to put this here.

So it's been ages since i have used a computer. I'm talking Windows XP status. So after missing computers so much and finally having the funds to get one. I decided to get back into computers, so i picked myself up a Lenovo ThinkPad t440s with Windows 10 after it being the most suggested and played with it a bit. But all in all my goal is to learn Linux. So I asked around and everyone says I can run virtual box and the Linux OS of my choice (I'm gonna go with mint) from my 1tb external HDD. But the issue I'm having is the installation and running of the VM. As well as installing the OS to the VM. I've tried searching YouTube for some tutorials but haven't had much luck finding the right video with a proper explanation. If anyone has some helpful hints it'd be greatly appreciated.

    Update Manager with Newer Kernel

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 11:01 AM PDT

    Hi team -

I installed Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa on a new Lenovo laptop last weekend. Most things work great, but wifi speed was terrible. After some digging, it seemed like the best (maybe just easiest) course of action was to install the newest kernel. So I did.

Now I'm running the 5.2.4 kernel, and wifi is much better. I used Ukuu, which was super simple, but now prompts me a lot for minor updates.

However, my biggest question: will updating the suggested software from Mint Update Manager break anything in that new kernel, or does update manager check current installed versions of drivers, packages, etc? I assume it does, but I don't want to just blindly update and break my shit.

Also, if anyone has tips on getting screen rotation and 'soft' keyboard working for tent/tablet mode on a Lenovo Flex 15 that would be super too.

    Thanks!

    Switching to Arch

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 04:54 AM PDT

Hey, I recently switched from Windows to Linux and used Ubuntu and Clear Linux till now, but was never quite satisfied with the experience. I read a lot about the different Distros and found Arch quite appealing for my needs. But I have a few questions. The big problem is I have no clue how much work it will be to set that distro up, but the general consent is that it is pretty difficult. Is that true or just a common exaggeration from the archusers? Secondly I'd like to know if maintaining the distro is difficult, since I have enough bad experiences with windows. In conclusion: Should I make the jump from my current Distro (Ubuntu) to arch or should I play it save till I learned more?

    Can I portable PCLinuxOS?

    Special Christmas update for u/lutusp

    • What I expected

A USB stick with installed OS to boot it on any PC

    • What I got instead

A stick that only recognised in legacy mode, however PCLinuxOS cannot be booted in legacy mode. Dead end

    • How they differ

Well, first one works, second one doesn't...

    • A very specific request

How do I make it work?

Unsure how to properly partition drives

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:24 AM PDT

    I have a 256GB SSD, a 1TB HDD, and 8GB RAM

SSD: want to partition it to be able to boot multiple Linux distros

    • how much space should I allocate for each distro?
    • I read the max number of primary partitions you can split a drive into is 4. Does that mean you can only have 4 different distros max?

HDD: want to use as storage and for /home folder

    • currently is only 1 partition and has some files from Windows. Can I split the existing partition to allocate space for /home partition or do I have to format it and then create the partitions?
    • how much space should I allocate for the home partition?
    • from what I understand, the home partition can be mounted to any distro I boot on the SSD to immediately load my config settings, themes, etc?

And lastly, is swap partition only needed if you use the sleep and hibernate functions? Otherwise I can ignore creating a swap partition?

Need advice on which distro to run on budget laptop

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:04 AM PDT

Hey guys I just purchase this laptop for $100 (facebook marketplace with a backpack included)

I'm a computer science major and I'm currently using my moms laptop to dual boot ubuntu, Which is amazing I havent used windows in forever. All I do is use it for notes, browsing, and basic programming for classes.

I do plan on upgrading the ram to 8gigs but thats it. 500gb hdd seems fine to me I dont see a reason to switch to SSD (I only have 100gb paritioned on this laptop for ubuntu and It runs amazingly well) but what distro do you guys recommend.

Do you think ubuntu should run fine? If not what other distro should I try? (please dont recommend arch lol) And what should I expect to be able to do? I don't game at all, I just browse, and my text editor is Pycharm, and that's really it. I might would like to be able to run a VirtualBox for kali but if not I can just live boot it. Thanks!

Latest Ubuntu kernel 5.0 broke my NVIDIA drivers?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 05:54 AM PDT

Since yesterday, Ubuntu is booting up to a blank screen and hangs displaying a message about BPFILTER. After Googling around I decided to go to safe mode and purge Nvidia drivers. It worked and managed to log in with nouveau. Then I discovered a crash report in var/crash folder about Nvidia drivers and kernel 5.

I'm not sure but I think Ubuntu upgraded lately to the new kernel 5. Can anybody confirm this upgrade? And does anybody had a similar issue?

Is it possible to fall back and use the previous kernel?
