windows update ruined my audio jack

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 11:41 AM PDT

hi everybody. After a windows update my speaker quality has gone down and when I plug in my headphones the sound still comes out of speakers. Only if I leave my headphones in and restart the laptop or disable and enable audio driver, only then it works however just until I take them out again then it stops working. I have tried updating the driver ( did not do it manually, did it through device manager), after reading up there have been posts saying I should update them manually download new ones myself and install them myself, however I dont know how. Can you guys help with that.

it is called Realtek(R) audio, and its id is HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0256&SUBSYS_10280819

EG, a MS Surface Pro. Or would something else be better?

Maybe with a USB device? And I'd like bluetooth as well.

LG Gram ultrabook doesn't charge from Dell docking station

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:52 PM PDT

So I have dell usb-c/3.0 docking station (D3100/TB16?) that I use for my work laptop. I just picked up a LG Gram 13 for my personal use and it's got a USB-C port on the side but when I plug it in, I get the message that it's a lower rating and can't charge.

what gives? Is the cable wrong? Does the Dell station not output enough? It can charge my dell work laptop.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:08 PM PDT

    Hi,

Does the LG Gram 14Z990-V have a Thunderbolt 3 port? Multiple product descriptions state the 14" LG Gram having a Thunderbolt 3 port on select configurations. However I am unable to figure out if this particular model does.

This particular configuration is as follows: i5 8265u 8GB RAM 256 GB SSD

    Any help would be appreciated.

Took apart old laptop and found what looks like a second socket. What is it?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 03:35 PM PDT

Hi Reddit, would very much appreciate some help choosing a laptop with moderate gaming power. Budget: 600-900. Country: The United States of America. First president: George Washington.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:54 PM PDT

Hello! I had to use the outdated questionnaire because the new one doesn't work on mobile to copy and paste.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Country of purchase: US

    • Budget range: 600-900

    • Purpose (netbook, ultraportable, mainstream, gaming, desktop replacement, etc.): Gaming, Schoolwork

    • Screen size preference: no preference really

    • OS preference (Windows/ Mac/ Linux): windows

    • Gaming requirements (example games and desired fps/settings): Far Cry, Kingdom Come, other newish games:40-60 FPS preferred. If it's able to run league/Minecraft/fortnite/csgo well consistently (~60 FPS) that'd be great.

    • Performance requirements (video, CAD, etc.): N/A don't know what this means :/

    • Method of computer support (office supplier, college bookstore, self support): College bookstore/Self support

    • Brand preferences and reasons (already owned accessories, familiarity, business compatibility): no preference

    • Any particular style that you like (examples are great): Lenovo Legion Y7000 looks pretty good

    • Which of the following qualities would you prefer? (Choose one, the other, or balanced)

    • Long battery life -vs- Low weight: Long battery

    • Build quality -vs- Low price: balanced? Probably build quality as long as it isn't outrageous price

    • Low noise/heat -vs- High performance: High performance

Would you pay a premium for something that has:

    • High resolution screen: eh

    • A great keyboard: nah

    • A great touchpad/mouse buttons: not really

    • Great audio: no. Headphones

List any features that are critical: (e.g. Optical drive, USB 3.0, SD card slot, ethernet port, HDMI port, bluetooth, VGA port, removable battery, glossy screen, matte screen, etc.) Ethernet/HDMI would be nice but not critical.

That was a long list. If you're TL;DR like myself, basically what I'm looking for is something similar to the Lenovo Legion Y7000. I just would like to know if I should go with that, or if I can get something that performs about the same for what I want it for(far cry, fortnite, new releases etc), but for a better deal.

    Thank you in advance <3

What Graphics cards are good at what? Debating between gaming and workstation.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:41 PM PDT

Hi there, Im in the market for a new laptop for school and was looking at the new T1000 GPUs in the Dell precision 5540. However Im not sure if the gaming cards work better for the applications Ill be using.

I plan on using a mix of Photoshop/ Illustrator as well as Rhino, GIS software, CAD and some other 3D rendering. From what Ive read, gaming cards are fast, but workstation cards are precise.

Just wondering where my money will be best spent.

    Thanks!

    Samsung Laptop boot question

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:37 PM PDT

I have a Samsung 300E5K. It is a little over 3 years old and boots very slowly. I bought an SSD drive and cloned the hard drive with Macrium Reflect. The SSD drive is connected via USB port but the Bios didn't find it when I tried to change the boot order. (I wanted to see if I could boot to the SSD drive before installing it in my laptop). So next I swapped out the hard drive for the SSD drive but when it booted it couldn't find the drive.

Does anyone have any thought on how I can get the laptop to see the drive and change the boot order. Any help would be much appreciated!

Lenovo X1 Carbon (3rd Gen) Temperature and Battery

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:29 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have some questions about the Lenovo X1 Carbon (3rd Gen).

So, I bought this laptop a couple of months ago online (2nd hand) and so far it's been working really well and I have no problems at all just some minor concerns about it.

Firstly, I've downloaded AIDA64 Engineer and dug around it. I realized that the temperature of my laptop is usually at 50-65 degrees Celsius while I am (i.e.) watching YouTube or Netflix or just generally surfing through the web. Furthermore, I did the System Stability Test offered in the AIDA64 app and it shows that my laptop has CPU throttling (max. 22%) and that overheating is detected. Is this normal and, if it is, is someone experiencing the same situation?

Secondly, I kinda "train" the battery. By "training" I mean that I first charge the battery to 100% and then I plug out the charger and let it de-charge. But, I realized that that's also affecting the battery's wear level (according to the AIDA64 program in about two days I got a rise from 14% to 16% on the battery wear level).

If someone has any advice for me, I'd gladly appreciate it :)

    Order of importance for specs?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 12:32 PM PDT

I can't seem to find what I'm looking for in a single laptop, so I'm curious what others would prioritize in this situation or in general.

What I want is a work laptop that I can plug into an egpu and use for high-end gaming.

    The laptop would ideally have:

    • A great screen with tiny bezels
    • A very thin profile
    • i7-8750h or better CPU
    • 8GB DDR4 2-DIMM RAM (2x4GB); or:
    • 16GB DDR4 2-DIMM RAM (2x8GB)
    • NVMe PCIe SSD Hard Drive (any size)
    • Thunderbolt 3 port with x4 PCIe lanes
    • An average or better keyboard and track pad
    • Windows OS
    • Sub-$1,500 price tag

But it doesn't exist that I can find.

Is 2-DIMM RAM that crucial for high end gaming? From what I've read, a single stick or RAM will bottleneck. But it really seems to be the component that is unavailable in everything EXCEPT the ugliest gaming laptops (can't bring those to client meetings) or laptops over $2,000 (not at all worth the cost imo).

If you were to deprioritize specs for hardcore FPS gaming (like Apex Legends), what would you do?

Between MSI and ASUS which of them produces the more reliable laptop and the better customer Satisfaction?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 11:29 AM PDT

I'm currently torn between purchasing the MSI GL65 and the ASUS Strix II Hero

I've heard from both ends how consistent and inconsistent the laptop has been for people. From how it breaks down the first couple months to how it lasts years for them.

I'm looking for more clarity considering how big an investment this is, so I'm looking for feedback and experiences.

What makes a laptop battery last longer?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:17 AM PDT

So I have a HP omen and although I love it, I am not ok with it's battery life. It lasts about 3 - 4 hours.

Now I have heard about laptops with lower battery watt hours and similar specs but still end up having better battery life.

For example HP omen 2070 max-Q (70 watt hour) vs Asus scar II 2070 with 66 watt hour battery.

Both have similar specs and in fact the ASUS has stronger GPU and yet the ASUS lasts longer.

What is the reason for this? What other factors weighs into the total life of battery?

Edit: I was looking at surface pro 2, if anyone could recommend a better one.

Specing out an older or even somewhat low-mid end laptop

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 06:17 AM PDT

So, I've been talking with a friend of mine. And I've been talking about maybe specing out a laptop. Since he says he knows how to build them. He said he has several laptop shells that don't have a ram or HDD/SSD. And he was saying it's possible for him to completely gut one the computers. As in gut it entirely and start from scratch. And he was saying he could try to mix and match parts to fit into it to run decently. But he was saying that I hace options to fit in my own Video/audio card, cooling options, Ram, hard drive, and other things of that sort in there. Most of his laptop shells are old military laptops that were decommisioned from like 2005-2008ish. My main concern right now is trying to get it to a point where it might be able to run some games. Maybe like League of Legends perhaps ir something around that spectrum.

My issue as it stands is that I'm not too savvy with knowing my parts well. And I don't have an overly excessive budget as it stands. I have a fair budget. But nothing exceedingly expensive. Is it possible to get the computer to the point of being able to run something like that with a fair-ish budget? I'm not entirely sure what parts I should look for, as in Hard drive or Ram wise. Does anyone know the best options for me? Like, what I could be able to spec into the computer.

He also said he could try to cannibalize my current laptop for parts to maybe fit into it (my laptop is from the same era as his current ones. But it's very unoptimized and it's parts are fairly cheap and low end. But it's got a 1 GB ram. And my current hard drive is about 10-12 years old BUT does have 500 GB on it. I'm not sure what I should go for. Any advice?

Is 3:2 aspect ratio useful or bad?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 10:27 PM PDT

I've been considering getting a huawei matebook x pro, but I'm not sure how I feel about the aspect ratio. I know that it allows more stuff to be shown while web browsing, but what about watching videos? Won't there be black bars on the top and bottom, especially for wide videos?

    Laptop Charger Advice

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:41 AM PDT

I was looking online for a compact laptop charger and the FINsix Dart looks pretty cool. Now, I have a pretty power hungry laptop (the included charger is rated at 180w). Would the FINsix even charge my laptop faster than it drains the battery? I would only be using it in emergencies so it's OK if it doesn't charge very fast.

If the FINsix indeed doesn't cut it, do y'all have any reccomendations?

    Any advice would be appreciated.
