Posted: 07 Aug 2019 12:29 AM PDT I will be starting my bachelor in computer science in The Netherlands this fall and I need a laptop (13 or 14 inch). My budget is 2100€. I will have a 30" monitor at home, so a smaller screen doesn't bother me. I'd like it to have 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The resolution doesn't matter; I'd much rather have a longer lasting battery. So far I have 3 options, but I am open to more suggestions from you guys:
Edit: All of the above have 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD Having dual booted windows and linux for 2 years, I'm tired of it and I'd much rather have the Unix-based macos. I don't mind paying the Apple premium for the MacBook, but I'm worried that the keyboard might break, the display might stop working or who knows what else and I'd have to pay a lot for a repair (and not have my laptop for a couple of weeks). So I value reliability more than macos. Any thoughts/recommendations/advice? Thanks! [link] [comments]
I need a powerful gaming laptop, that does not look like a gaming laptop. Suggestions? Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:49 AM PDT Alright - After finding out that the new COD has crossplay (which means that the playerbase on PC wont die off right after launch - as has been the case with every fucking Call of Duty game since the big bang), and after drooling over the Cyberpunk 2077 demo from last year, I have come to the conclusion that I need a more powerful PC. And it needs to be a laptop - because travel. And I want it to not look like a gaming laptop. I really hate that design. I'm so fucking embarrassed when I show up to my digital exams with my current ROG laptop. It looks like a gaming laptop and I hate it. I've always hated it. It even has the "Republic of Gamers" printed fucking everywhere. Can you imagine having anything more cringeworthy than that? Printed on your damn laptop? Everywhere. "RePuBlIc Of GaMeRs! EpIc GaMeR mOmEnTs! GaMeRs RiSe Up!" I fucking hate it. I hate the fucking LED's-everywhere-design that just screams "gamer". Anyways, TLDR, all that - My point is, I want a gaming laptop. And I want it to not look like a gaming laptop. I want it to have atleast a 120Hz monitor and a 1070 or a 2070 GPU, a good CPU, and good fan-cooling. I dont really mind low storage space or "mechanical keyboards" or anything like that. Do you guys have any suggestions? (please help me) Edit: thanks for all the suggestions guys! I'll go to google and copy paste all the models you guys sent, and have a look <3 [link] [comments]

USA. Preferably under $5-6,000. Money isn't an issue but I want to spend as little as possible.
I stay inside most of my free time. Not going to buy another one for a long time so longest possible lifetime. Can't go with desktop because I'm a quadriplegic and operate with a stylus in my fingers instead of mouse and not needing a separate keyboard is a +!
N/a
Windows
17.3+
Gaming
Kinda limited what I can play but highest settings/fps. Oculus
Best build quality.
I purchased a MSI GS75 2080 max-q from Best Buy and quickly regretted that. CPU would top out at 100C within minutes of playing anything on highest settings even without overclocking. Didn't do a thorough look on specs and the Geek Squad didn't catch the lack of a Mini DP. Fortunately a mDP -> USB-C worked but I can tell that it barely works and isn't ideal. Returned that and let them convince me (stupidly) to downgrade to same model but with a 2070 max-q. SAME ISSUE and now I'm down a shorter lifetime on future games. I have to return this one on the 22nd and I'm hoping that those maladies will be solved with a custom builder and upgraded thermal paste. I'm looking at the Alienware 51m for upgrade ability at $4,700-900 including 4 year warranty from HIDevolution. However, they recommended the MSI GT76 because a $9,500 one got returned for crackling audio/mobo issues. I'm conflicted because even barely configured it runs to $5,700 with a 3 year warranty. They said it has better cooling which is my main concern with a delidded i9 and desktop GPU. The only attraction for me is a 4k screen (FU dell) because I can get 4TB for less than 3TB. Should I consider a different builder like XoticPC or Falcon NW? I was also told XPC isn't a licensed with Dell which is a huge red flag if true. Thanks for reading! Posted: 07 Aug 2019 03:25 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Around £1000 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Good battery, good display and decent specs i5 8th gen minimum How important is weight and thinness to you? Important but not overly, needs good aesthetics and design but not end of the world Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux? Windows or Mac Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably would prefer 15" but don't mind 13" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Moderate use of Lightroom and PS, no gaming other than Fortnite but have PS4 for that If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD definite, good build quality and SD card slot would be ideal. My old laptop (Asus K55a) has lasted me 6/7 years and hoping my new laptop will do the same. Was considering 13" MBP with 256GB SSD as I'd be able to get it for around 1100 after student discount and selling the studio 3's from the back to school offer. Although knowingly its overpriced and not great value for money and the issues with keyboard and repairing could be costly, but design and display seems great. Wouldn't mind buying a refurbished previous gen but prices are pretty similar after discount anyways? Also looking at the Razer Blade Stealth but not keen on the design and hear customer service from Razer wont be the best? although good specs and discounted price atm on their website See a lot of reviews for Lenovos Thinkpad X1 carbon and Xps but already have XPS as my work laptop and would prefer somethin else [link] [comments]
[DEAL] SSD Budget Laptop (250-300) Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:35 PM PDT This laptop is a steal in my opinion. With the extra ram slot, twenty dollars can land you 8GB of ram, which should be plenty for work that requires more ram usage than simply browsing and streaming. The 128 GB SSD ensures a fast bootup and enough space for the average college student. Hell, i'm typing up this post through this laptop right now. 2 USB 3.0's, a USB-C, an HDMI, an SD Card Reader, and even an ethernet port! Heres the link - https://slickdeals.net/f/13280443-hp-14-dk0024wm-laptop-pale-gold-14-768p-ryzen-3-3200u-vega-3-4gb-ddr4-128gb-ssd-win10h-269-f-s Let me know what you think! What medium price gaming laptop should I buy? Suggest one! Posted: 07 Aug 2019 03:11 AM PDT Hi everybody, I'm a university student that also likes to play games on PC. Because of organizational problems I cannot afford to build a desktop pc, which I know would be my best option. Currently I'm writing with my lenovo y50-70 (i7 4710HQ, nvidia gtx 860m, 8Gb ram). I'm looking for a laptop that has a i7 cpu, either 1660 ti or 2060 gpu and a 15,6" 144hz monitor. The two laptops configuration that I am currently looking at are the Lenovo legion y540 and the custom pcspecialist recoil III rtx.
1) I altredy have a 500Gb samsung evo ssd laying around so I'm planning to put that in my new laptop as main memory. 2) I don't really know what to do with the os. On microsoft site costs 145 euro, while pcspecialist charges 106 euro and lenovo 189 euro to have it pre installed (wtf?). I'll figure something out later... links: pcspecialist: https://www.pcspecialist.it/notebook/recoil-III-rtx-15/ Note: lenovo's laptop can be upgraded for +170 euro to the rtx 2060 bringing the total cost to € 1.510,56 and the pcspecialist can be configured with the 9th gen cpu (i7 9750H) for +86 euro bringing the total cost at € 1.442. This way the cofiguration is basically identical, nevertheless my ideal price would be around 1300€. Which of these two do you think I should go for? If you have to suggest a different/similarly spec laptop, please do it but note that I live in italy and I would like to have the italian keyboard layout plus the possibility to get the italian invoice from my puchase. Thank you in advance for your help. [link] [comments]
Looking for a nice, slim laptop for College that has a good battery life and not an awful display Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:15 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $1k, U.S. I can go over if the computer is really good. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care about 2-in-1, I would prefer good battery life with best specifications. How important is weight and thinness to you? I want a thin computer— like Surface Laptop or MacBook thin. Cute and sleek, you know? Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'll take anything that isn't Chrome OS lol. I've been looking at Macs but even with a student discount they're absolutely expensive. (Plus I've had my eyes on the 13 in. MacBook Pro— I LOVE the touch panel. And it does look very good, but I just don't know, I feel like I can get something better for this price range) I like windows too though! Do you have a preferred screen size? Not particularly. Minimum 13 inches. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. League of Legends. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60 FPS on league on low or medium settings, so really any laptop with a good processor. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a keyboard that feels nice (like Mac or Surface), I want the computer to look cute when I pull it out or am using it, and most importantly, a battery life that works well for college days. I would hopefully want a computer that doesn't fall apart easily (which is why I'm not going for a surface), and I want a display that works well outside. (So I'm pretty sure IPS laptops wouldn't cut it). It's a lot but, if you find a laptop that can meet those requirements, I will really love you. Also, if you're looking at laptops and they have a student discount price, then tell me the student discount price. [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Aug 2019 01:54 AM PDT Hello guys, last academic year my laptop died, and I need to buy another one for finishing my degree in Computer Science. The idea is to use it for my last year and use it for side projects, work, etc, when I finish my studies.
Spain, 1000€
Best specs for the money and with priority importance battery life.
Not a big deal.
Most probably scenario is that I install Linux, the other posibility is to install Windows and use VM.
14
Maybe some light gaiming, LoL or Hearthstone or some indies. Already got a desktop for gaming, so this will be spontaneous.
Overall build quality and a decent keyboard.
Looking for some options I found the MSI PS42 here in Spain at 999€ with an i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and a MX250. I found different opinions in this laptop, but I think it is a very good option. Any suggestions? Edit: Misspelling [link] [comments]
Returning to University for Masters - Laptop Suggestions Posted: 06 Aug 2019 07:33 PM PDT Hi All,I am just finished my Under Grad in Marketing and I am now moving on to a Masters in Digital Marketing in September and looking for suggestions of a new laptop. (To add I will also progress into a role in digital marketing so the laptop will more than likely be used for that also). My current daily is 2012 13" Macbook Pro (Base) with upgraded 8gb of Ram and 512gb SSD which I added a year ago. I have used this laptop daily since new it has stood its purpose and still performs quite well but I think I will let it off too early retirement. I also have a beefy desktop to go with this i7 4770K, 1TB SSD, 16GB Ram and GTX980. I am from Ireland however I am currently living and working in California for the Summer and moving back in September but I am looking to pick up a new laptop while I am over here as the Dollar/Euro rate is quite good at the moment. Two laptops I am currently looking at a are 1) 2019 13" Macbook Pro (July Launch) - Spec: 1.4GHz i5/ 16 GB Ram / 512GB SSD2) 2019 Razer Blade 15 (Base)I have answered the below questions from the pinned post to give more background information on my needs.

Looking for a light laptop for college and light to moderate gaming Posted: 06 Aug 2019 08:52 PM PDT **Total buget and country of purchase:** Less than $1100 ideally, USA. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Ideally good battery life (>5 hours), with good specs for the money. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Decently important. I would like to find a laptop that's less than 5 lb or so. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows (but I would like to be able to dual boot linux) * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I plan to program and very light video editing as well as some gaming. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Binding of Isaac / Terraria / Final Fantasy X/X-2 / VNs. All around 1080p 60fps ideally but I can deal with >40 fps in games like FFX. Settings would ideally be above medium but I can deal with low if need be edit: also league of legends, but i'm fine with playing that on low specs * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good keyboard, finger-print reader. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I looked at the lenovo back to school sale and I saw the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 5 which fits what I want outside of gaming, so if there was anything similar to that it would be nice (maybe another Thinkpad would be cool but I'm not sure what exactly is perfect.) Posted: 06 Aug 2019 10:01 PM PDT Hi there, I am about to purchase a laptop for starting university (nursing) and I really have my heart set on the new 2019 MacBook Pro (base model). My budget is $1800 so while this seems like a lot I am Canadian so I have less to work with then a lot of you probably are used to in USD. I'm really only going to be using the computer for note taking, music/movies/browsing so I don't need anything too powerful. I had a MacBook Pro previously and I loved it which is why I'm so settled on a Mac. Previous to this I didn't have great experiences with PC. So,I guess I am just looking for reassurance that I'm not making a big mistake by going with the MBP. There is actually a promo on right now so I also get studio beats free with it, this kinda helps justify the price a bit haha. Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:54 PM PDT So I'm looking into buying the m17, specifically this setup: Possibly expanding the memory to 32gb if that's possible. My question isn't about it's capacity to do what I want to do with it. I have no doubt on that. My question is in pricing. Specifically, I know I can get practically the same setup in a different brand for several hundred dollars cheaper, so I wanted to know if they are built better than other computers with the same specs or would I be paying the extra money just for the name. I know that's kind of vague, but I just wanted to hear some thoughts from people that know better than I do on how reliable and how well built they are and if I would just be wasting four or five hundred dollars on a name like some Jordan's or an Apple product. The money isn't a problem, but neither am I into spending too much extra just for a name brand. Edit : I should add that I love the way this computer looks and am willing to pay a hundred or two extra for aesthetics, just not if it's ridiculously over-priced.
