Laptop for college work and gaming Posted: 14 Aug 2019 09:59 AM PDT I need a new laptop for college and I'm trying decide between a Lenovo Thinkpad t590 or a Legion Y540. My major is Computer Science but I'm already set between these two laptops, but I'm not sure which to chose because the Y540 is for gaming which I want to to when I have free time, however I already have a pc that can play games but I'm not sure if my parent will let me bring it to college. But I also want something that doesn't have a ton of led rainbow lights all over the Laptop which is why I also like the T590, but I don't how week it will perform with games (however I can also live with the legion y540's because they appear to only be one color which is white.)I am open to other options that I can both college work and play games on it. I will greatly appreciate any suggestions. Edit: I've already made my decision for a laptop and have bought already. I want to say thank you to those of you who have given me suggestions. Help me please! (I don't know how to write titles) Posted: 15 Aug 2019 02:45 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1000 give or take a few hundred below or under preferred, upper limit $1500, Australia. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm going to be using it quite often, so battery life (hopefully above ~6 hours at the least) and the best specifications for the money would be nice. How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't mind thinness, nothing too heavy though because I'm short and have back problems Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows for the most part while I'm outside the house, but I definitely want to have Debian on when I'm at home. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would like to run Blender, photoshop, stellarium, and misc. software that is pretty much for spectroscopy and astronomy, and some gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd like to be able to play the following at high settings preferably but medium is pretty good, just no obvious pixelation: Kerbal Space Program, Universe Sandbox, Minecraft (I'm probably gonna dump heaps of mods in this one), Sims 4 (again, dump some more mods), Cities: Skylines, PUBG, Battlefield V. I'm also hoping to run a couple of emulators (if it matters, I'm hoping to run Dolphin primarily to play Gamecube games with). Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I understand I'm probably asking too much, but a finger print reader or a touch screen would be nice. After using a macbook air for most of highschool, I'd like a relatively nice touchpad as well. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you for spending the time to help recommend a good laptop! Really the specific requirements are entirely optional but the rest is pretty important to me. Thank you again! [link] [comments] |
Which one of these laptops is a better Value? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 10:49 PM PDT Lenovo IdeaPad S340 $459.99 Acer Aspire 5 $399.99 Lenovo Yoga 730 $549.99 I want a laptop that can be used for watching videos, multi-tasking with Apps such as Microsoft Word and Chrome. Basically a really fast laptop. I want a laptop that can at least run Pcsx2 as I won't be doing heavy games such as Battlefield or Rainbow Six [link] [comments] |
$500-$800 Laptop for a college student that starts in 5 days! Posted: 15 Aug 2019 02:00 AM PDT * Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: $500-$800 / US (More specifically Texas) * Are you open to refurbs/used? No * How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? Build Quality, Performance, Battery Life, Form Factor * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14"-16" * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will likely be using CAD * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a good keyboard with no numpad. Don't care for touch screen, and a finger-print scanner would be cool but definitely not needed. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been searching a lot but every time i find something i like i always find downsides but do not really know if they will really affect me (I'm not the most versed with laptops). Also I will be using this for pretty much only college related work/research due to me having a PC that can handle all of my other needs. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:56 AM PDT So I have been searching for a laptop for a week now and I can't find anything that suits me completely. It either doesn't have good specs or its battery sucks or display sucks. So I don't really need it for anything specific. The only 2 real requirements would be display quality and usable screen. I would rather have the latter but don't compromise a lot from screen quality. The only store I can buy from right now is Amazon.de. [link] [comments] |
Laptop recommendations for excellent note taking and functional programming. $1000-1500$ Posted: 14 Aug 2019 05:04 PM PDT Hello world! I am a university student looking to buy a laptop with two main requirements. 1) I want the note taking to feel great. I will be writing math proofs and inscribing notes on published papers. 2) I want to be able to run python and other editors. This needs to be functional, but nothing special. So far I've seen that the iPad Pro doesn't have the functionality to run python and other IDE's. On the other hand I've seen reviews that the windows laptop writing only feels mediocre. I am expecting to spend around 1000-1500$, of course if the job can be done for less- that's excellent. Any suggestions? Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
cheapie 'burner' for Minecraft Posted: 14 Aug 2019 03:52 PM PDT hi yall. i'm looking for a suggestion for a cheapie burner laptop to play minecraft on with my son. that's it. my only requirement is it be able to run windows 10. i'd prefer new as i just don't know what i'm looking for and looking at the craigslist ads really doesn't make the most sense at this point. i checked the sidebar and the cheapest previously listed now goes for 799. that's a good bit more than i wanted to spend. i'm hoping to keep it below 150 because really at that point, i could probably just buy an xbox one. don't really want to do that though. again. all i want to do is play minecraft with my son on it. i plan on purchasing an additional mouse and ethernet cord. thanks so much in advance. Residing in USA. 2) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Reply: I want a good battery life and a good key board at a reasonable price. 3) How important is weight and thinness to you? Reply: I would like a laptop that weighs less than 4 lbs. As long as the laptop isn't too thin that if you type it moves the laptop yah know. 4) Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Reply: I don't want mac because it is v overpriced and I want the best without it being too overpriced. Currently thinking about Lenovo Thinkpad X390 but idk. I like to use google and will need to have a laptop that I can download office 365 too. 5) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Reply: Screen Size: less than/equal to 15 inches. I just want it to be light weigh less than 4 lbs. 6) Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Reply: None of the above will be happening. 7) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Reply: None of the above will be happening. 8) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reply: A good keyboard would be nice. A good webcam is necessary. I want storage for pics and vids. Touchscreen would be dope but is not necessary. Also I would not like it to overheat too quickly and for the fan to be quiet. A good speaker would also be nice while I listen with my earbuds or out loud in my room. I want the screen to be visible and not too dimmed. tyyy ppl [link] [comments] |
Do I really need a laptop? Looking for advice Posted: 15 Aug 2019 12:45 AM PDT This is my situation: • I now have an old mac laptop from 2010. It has been repaired some times and it still works, but it is definitely not powerful enough for what I want to do. It would need some repair, but it does have a 1TB SSD that maybe can be reused. • I would like to buy a new computer, that can handle both games and large databases. Below my ideas in the form required. • I am not convinced that a desktop computer would be the best option. On one side, I'd like the mobility of a laptop. On the other, there's budget constraints and less performance for laptops. Plus, I read that laptops are harder to repair in case they break. • I can buy a laptop in the US at the end of this month, but I am only there for a short time. The options I am looking at are:
What is your more experienced opinion? Here's the form for the laptop Total budget and country of purchase: 1300 EUR (1450 USD) – either Belgium or US Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No major needs, but I would prefer if it did not look like a gaming laptop (no LEDs and stuff like that) How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all, can be bulky or heavy. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches or plus Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not yet but I'd like to start gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games I'd like to try: Red Dead Redemption 2 TW Warhammer I do not know enough about settings but I guess medium settings and 60 fps would be fine. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices. As I would use the laptop for work too, it's probable I will spend a lot of hours in front of it. So it is better if the screen is comfortable (Flickerfree + Blue light?) Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I really do not like the "gaming look" of some gaming laptops. [link] [comments] |
Laptop for light video editing and WoW <$850 Posted: 14 Aug 2019 08:44 PM PDT I'm trying to avoid buying a desktop because I know I'll get more bang for my buck, but if I can run WoW in 1080p at a high frame rate (on an external monitor, stock monitor doesn't matter for gaming) I'll be happy. Also gonna be editing some videos using Adobe Premiere. Weight and battery life aren't important. If I can get a laptop that will handle that well enough I'd rather do that than a desktop. Looking for a powerful photo editing laptop. Posted: 15 Aug 2019 12:26 AM PDT **Total budget and country of purchase: $2,500, United States **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is a must and I'd be happy with 5 or 6 hours of battery life if possible. **How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like it to be reasonably light and thin but its not that important. **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inches. **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I run Lightroom primarily and the rest of the Adobe suite too. Not doing any gaming on it but a modest dGPU would be nice regardless. **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A well made keyboard with back lighting and some noticeable key travel, a metal chassis is preferred but not mandatory, touch-screen is also a must, along with a stylus too for the 2 in 1 mode, 1 or 2 of full size USB ports and 1 USB-C port too, 1 HDMI out, and a full size SD card reader. **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. A 4k panel with full sRGB and/or AdobeRGB color spaces is the most important thing that I want out of this laptop so I am willing to pay a markup to get the best color accurate display possible. **Preferred Specs CPU: 8th gen i7 or newer GPU: RTX 2060 or newer Ram: 16gb Storage: 1tb SSD I would like the ram and storage to be expandable for future proofing but do they even make self serviceable laptops anymore besides Thinkpads? Need help buying a laptop for school and light gaming Posted: 14 Aug 2019 10:48 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* Canada Under $2000CAD * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* Good Battery life, best specs. 2 in 1 isn't crazy important * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* Quite important since I'll be carrying it around all day. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* 15.6 inches is preferred * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* I will be programming and gaming. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* In terms of games: Battlefield Rocket League PUBG Minecraft F1 2019 Possibly AAA titles that run out. I would like to play on typically medium settings if I can but I'd sacrifice that in any game as long as it can run smoothly at 60FPS. ***Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* No requirements, but obviously all of the above matters slightly. I would prefer a laptop that doesn't look like a gaming laptop if possible * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* So, I am considering: Asus Zenbook 15 UX533FD (GTX 1550 + i7-8565U) ($1700 CAD) Dell XPS 15 9560 (GTX 1050ti + i7-8750H) ($1900 CAD) Razer Blade 15 (GTX 1060 MAX Q + i7-8750H) ($1839.99 CAD) MSI PS63 (GTX 1650 + i7-8565U) ($1900 CAD) I'm leaning towards the zenbook but I am concerned about the throttling. Is there known heat issues with that laptop? Could I play games like PUBG or AAA titles for an hour or 2 without having to stop? Edit: I plan on doing AI/ML in my upper years. Will the CPU be able to handle the intensity? [link] [comments] |

Looking for a gaming laptop for 24 hour shiftwork Posted: 14 Aug 2019 09:57 PM PDT I'll be starting work at a station doing 24 hour days and I'd like to be able to keep my regular gaming habits going while I'm there. My price range was from 1500-2200 and had considered the Strix Scar II and Eluktronics M-17 as my two top picks. After some browsing I'm seeing more and more hate on the Eluktronics brand and I'm not quite sure anymore. The machine will mainly be used for Classic WOW and strategy games. Does anyone have any suggestions? I feel like I'm watching video after video and reading endless articles just to end up where I started. [link] [comments] |
