Is it possible to "blacklist" an app from using the internet on an android phone?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:31 PM PDT

    I have a galaxy s9+ android 9.0

Essentially I work in a place with very shitty internet, hut enough service to text, or stream music (sometimes) and I will play offline games from time to time if i need a few minutes (like going to the bathroom or we) but the apps take like 5 minutes to load their ad videos. Is it possible to "turn off the internet" for one specific app,

i dont want to go airplane mode then i cant text or anything.

That's currently my solution sometimes and it's mildly annoying. Just looking for a way around this.

    Best Android under $400?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:06 PM PDT

I'm using an old LG V10. I was happy enough with it until my girlfriend dropped it at the pool and broke the screen, camera lens & headphone port all in one go. She's talented!

    Here's what my preferences are:

    • Under $400
    • Android 9.0
    • 3500-5000mah battery
    • Micro SD slot
    • headphone port
    • Fast charging
    • Wireless charging would be neat, fast charging more important.
    • USB-C
    • I want a better screen to size ratio, lots of wasted space on my V10
    • Physical size about the same as a V10
    • Camera performance at least as good as a V10.

Basically, I just want a massive battery, good camera, and a micro SD slot and I'm happy.

Things I don't care about at all: Selfie camera, gaming capability, face recognition, accessories included.

I've been considering the Samsung A50 or A70 but I'm reading mixed reports on how well it would work on ATT in the USA. I also hear the camera might be worse than my old V10.

I've seen Samsung S8's in my price range, and while its old its still a pretty powerful looking phone going by specs.

Any suggestions? Think the A50/A70 would work ok on my network?

How to delete old SMS & MMS?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:40 PM PDT

I just moved to a new phone. Using Samsung backup, I can see how many messages I am backing up and restoring - over 97,000 . The restore took over 3 hours. I'd like to delete some of the old ones but haven't found a good way to do that without deleting entire conversations. I want to keep the conversation thread with my wife but don't need her grocery list from 2016 anymore, you know?

TL;DR - How can I delete all text messages older than 1 year?

Looking for a launcher to replace Aviate, anything similar floating about?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:19 PM PDT

I got a new phone Monday (Note 10) and its been great, but I'd like to ditch the stock launcher, as it's just not working for me. On my old phone I was running Yahoo Aviate, but that launcher is EOL and I don't want to run outdated, possibly insecure software on my shiny new phone.

Honestly my favorite part of Aviate was the way it handled folders. You got a whole page dedicated to them, and rather than condensing a group of apps to a single tile, it would take up a whole row. From there your first five apps were accessable without opening the folder, but you could obviously open the folder to show all the apps within.

If I could get the Google newsfeed on a page to the left instead of bixby that too would be awesome.

Another nice thing would be having the app tray being an alphabetical list that is scrollable, rather than pages of icons in a grid, I find that much easier to navigate.

I know Nova is very customizable, but last I checked it didn't handle folders the way I like, anyone know if they've added that?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Semi-bricked Phone with No Backups, but is there hope?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:51 PM PDT

Alright, squad, I'm in a bit of a pickle and have come here for assistance. Please point me in the direction of the answer if this has been asked before. Otherwise-

My Galaxy S8+ is "semi-bricked". The reason for this is that the phone has a big ol' break on the side that makes the touchscreen unusable. The phone is on, receives messages, calls, and I can see the lock screen. I am unable to interact any farther. I am able to make calls and do basic texting from the phone while connected to bluetooth in my car. I also have full access to my text messages through my desktop app.

I had an upgrade available anyways so instead of fixing the screen I went ahead and got a new phone. Unfortunately, I goofed and never backed up this device. Is there a way that I can transfer data without unlocking the phone or by using the options available (making calls, sending texts)?

[Huawei GR5] Should I update my EMUI?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:46 PM PDT

My current handset is GR5 and EMUI 4.1 was implemented in it, which kinda equivalent to Android 6. But for a long time I was notified for a EMUI update which will upgrade the EMUI 5 means Android 7 basically.

Now Should I update my EMUI? Will I be able to access Google and Android after the update? My set is old enough and currently I can use them.

    Galaxy S10e or OnePlus 7?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 06:53 PM PDT

So lately due to a series of unfortunate events, I either have to spend $300 to fix my s10e, or to put $100 down on a new OnePlus 7 the T-Mo guy hyped up today.

My own research unveiled some promising things about the OnePlus (headphone jack withstanding).

My only question I haven't found online is that my S10e has this multitasking feature where I can swipe up while watching some YouTube videos and it will minimize into a window I can still view while opening other apps. Google Maps too: I can open Maps, swipe up and I'll still have a small window of Maps open in a corner while I'm also either watching YouTube, or playing a game, or Google searching (while my gf is driving obviously).

My question is does the Oneplus 7 have this similar pop-up app display? Anytime I Google "one plus 7 pop up display" I just get matches referencing the pop-up camera lol. Thanks.

Hello everyone. My dad's phone is stuck in a blue screen with the Lenovo logo. He can still receive calls and all that, it seems that the problem is just in the screen. What can we do?

A few questions about customizing a Xiaomi phone

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:03 PM PDT

I got my first android phone (Redmi note 7) the other day and I have a few questions. I apologize if this is too long to read. Also, sorry I don't know much about android, I am very new.

1- Can I add widgets or ANYTHING ELSE than the default calendar, note... to the left most screen (the one where you can't put apps). It would be cool to have a news feed there

2- Is there any icon pack compatible with the mi launcher? Every icon pack I download doesn't have the mi launcher in the set up page

3- Do launchers slow down the phone? I tried other launchers, I liked them, buy opening and closing apps took longer than without them. Is this normal?

    Thanks for your time!

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:26 PM PDT

I moved Minecraft to the SD card, and then it "disappeared": the only thing I found was a document called [...]minecraftpe.asec. I tried downloading it again from the play store, but I lost everything. Is it possible to restore the data from this file?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:01 PM PDT

I pressed on a text notification and it made the notification into a new mini window that hovered over the app that i was on. I was able to move it anywhere and do a bunch of stuff. How do you do this without having to tap a notification?

Why does the android messaging system suck so much? Or am I just doing somthing wrong

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:46 PM PDT

I have an s10 and (even when texting other android phones like my freind who has a note 9) when ever I send a 4k video it comes out as like 144p most of the time. Why would they make there phones be able to record at this level but not make there messenger able to handle it?

Smooth video scrubbing like on iOS

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:59 PM PDT

tl;dr Is it possible to change the file format of the Android video camera to allow for smoother scrubbing with VLC (or any other app)?

This is rather lengthy and I apologize in advance for it.

Looking at iOS devices, even older ones, I can't help but be envious of the video playback capabilities of the standard video player.

Without any delay you can put your finger on the scrubbing and it will mute the sound while scrubbing and at the same time smoothly playback all frames back and forth just as you desire it. It is such a pleasure. I have found myself scrubbing without any reason, just because it works so nicely.

Years ago I thought this must be due to Apple building hardware and software and Android will, with increasing CPU power be able to integrate a feature just as good.

However, years later I still get scrubbing from 20 years ago.

I tried several apps, but without success.

Then I dug into my phone and found some other videos. Ones that were not taken on my phone, but from a digital camera (file extension .avi [a container, I know] instead of .mp4).

With VLC I now had perfect frame by frame scrubbing on those videos. Without any delays. Not as smooth as Apple, but light-years from what I had seen so far.

So it seems to be a matter of file formats rather than software or hardware?!

Is there any way to change the format Android records video in? I would love to stick with the stock camera (Sony XCompact), but with all those Androids around this may not be helpful.

Or put differently: Is there an app that records so that VLC can provide smooth scrubbing?

    Thanks!

Is there a root setting to change when the system drops a wifi connection for being too weak?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:21 AM PDT

My new Samsung A70 is too quick to drop wifi connections even when they still work but are a little slow. Even when the "drop weak or unstable wifi connections" setting is turned off. I can't reliably use my phone in my shed anymore.

My old Note 4 had the opposite problem - it worked fine in the shed, but it also "hung on" to the wifi for 2 blocks while I walked or drove away from my house, even if it was -90dB and unusable.

I would like somewhere inbetween these two phones. I am willing to root to get it, but is this actually a setting I can configure somewhere? The minimum wifi dB before dropping?

    Oneplus 5 backup

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:13 PM PDT

So my oneplus 5 screen is unresponsive. I tap everywhere and nothing happens. I've had it looked at and I've been told the motherboard needs fixing. This fix would completely erase my phone data so how would I backup all this data so that I don't lose anything.
