I am choosing between a Dell XPS 15 and the razer. The razer is obviously more expensive. How long does the battery last on the razer in just Day to day, non gaming use ?

    ThinkPad Upgrade over Zenbook

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 09:51 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I am entering my third year of electrical engineering. I purchased an Asus Zenbook UX370UA going into the end of my first year to double as a tablet and a more powerful laptop upgrade. I was enticed by the i7, 16gb ram, tablet functionality, etc. This is it: https://www.asus.com/ca-en/2-in-1-PCs/ASUS-ZenBook-Flip-S-UX370UA/

I did not know a lot about computers at the time and assumed an i7 was an i7. Didn't realize that an i7-8550U was different from an i7-8850H, had no idea that graphics cards were a big deal, didn't know the difference between DDR3 and DDR4, etc. I am now wiser to all of this and am quickly realizing that my zenbook gets quickly stressed after trying to do any 3D modelling in AutoCAD, Blender, Fusion360, or programming in Visual Studio. Also the battery life for even just note taking and web browsing nets me maybe 4-5 hours which is unacceptable in my books.

The tablet functionality served me well, so well in fact that I bought myself an iPad Pro to use for note taking because I ended up loving digital notes so much. Now I do not use the pen/touch screen functionality of my zenbook at all, am annoyed at how hot it gets under load, its lack of ports when programming micro-controllers and accessories, etc.

So while I am kicking myself for the purchase, I realize that the tablet functionality has served me well and if I didn't have it, I never would have realized how much I like it. That was a sidebar...

ANYWAYS. The Lenovo ThinkPad p53 has just been released and I got a REALLY good quote (I think) $1500 CAD for this: https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-p/P53/p/22WS2WPWP53

It comes with i7-9750H, 16gb dd4 2666, 256gb m.2 nvme ssd, Quadro T2000, and a FHD 15" display. This one still has a 2.5" bay which I can stick a 960GB SSD I have laying around in and I really like that it has another m.2 slot as well as 2 more ram slots. Seems like it is future-proofed a bit. I also used ThinkPad's at work and really, truly love the keyboards. So I also love that this keyboard comes with a number pad. Makes life so much easier.

This laptop seems to be be good enough to future proof me for at least 5 years to come and no matter what laptop I purchase, I need to make sure that it will last me 5 years.

I am open to other suggestions, but need to keep it under $1700 taxes in (CAD).

I am also open to opinions on whether or not I should just keep what I have if there is the thought that I won't notice the upgrade between what I have and what I am after.

Here seems to be the common questions and answers people are looking for in this subreddit:

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      $1700 (CAD) Taxes Included.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply
Good specs with decent battery life (I understand running anything graphically intense on battery life will degrade quickly but I do need at least 8 hours doing just web browsing and note taking/pdf browsing, report writing)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not a big deal, I drive to school and 1 or 2 pounds difference doesn't matter to me. Anything under 5lbs = OK
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
I run windows but also some distros of linux.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15'' preferred
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.I'll be running programming tasks, light machine learning, applications like android studio, visual studio, QT designer, SQL Server Management Studio, AutoCAD, solidworks, Blender, NO gaming though.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Don't game and am not interested in gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good backlit keyboard preferred with numberpad. Touch screen not important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have my iPad Pro that I will take to class on days when I will just be in lectures and leave my laptop at home so portability (ie. lightweight) is not that big of an issue for me. I do sit at coffee shops or libraries or places without power so I need extended battery life. I also drive up to two displays with my laptop when at home so it needs to be powerful enough for that as well.

    £1.2-£1.8k gaming laptop recommendation please.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 03:42 AM PDT

Thank you for taking the time to look at my request. Appreciate any suggestions/thoughts. My last true gaming laptop was an Alienware M14x many years ago, which served me well for years, and is still in good use by one of my nephews. I have a gamer girlfriend now who's just invested in a gaming laptop, and we'd like to do more PC gaming together.

    • **Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

    £1.2k - £1.8k, UK (England)

    • **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

Specifications are important, battery life not so much -- I'd have it plugged in for gaming. Ridiculous levels of heat or fan volume are more of a concern.

    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

    Moderately, but I don't need something wafer-thin.

    • **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows.

    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    15.6". I'd prefer a 14", but from looking around I don't think that's feasible.

    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

    Gaming, Adobe Premiere/Photoshop.

    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

No one specific game in mind. Modern games at fairly high graphics settings. It's been a while since I had a modern gaming rig, so have a lot of games to catch up on, and will be great to be able to enjoy new titles at launch.

    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

Reliability is certainly vital, otherwise no.

    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I'd like to make sure that, for my money, I get something reliable, fast, sturdy, fairly sleek, and to last a good few years. I've had a look at the ROG Zephyrus models, which look good to me. Also the Acer Predator Titan 500, and Alienware M15.

Looking for an all purpose laptop which will get me through senior years and uni (5+ years)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 03:41 AM PDT

AUSTRALIA, buget: max $1500 or a bit above it its realy worth it

I want a laptop which has a REALLY good battery life. My laptop now (Lenovo Yoga 510) was advertised as up to 8.5 hours but it literally only lasts 4-5, although I do respect that I've had it for 4 years. Additionally, the laptop should be as LIGHT in weight and THIN as possible, have over 128GB storage and at least intel i5. I prefer a touch screen and 360 degrees flipping, a good camera and high-quality sound recording but these are not essential. The laptop should also look SLEEK and "minimalistic" (looking at the apple laptops), but I am keeping my options open.

I have looked at macbooks and microsoft, HP etc. If you have an idea of a laptop that might suit the above, please comment down below

    Thank you!

All around laptop for engineering and general use

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 03:39 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I had a macbook air for the last 7 years, and it is getting very tired. On the side I have a gaming computer, so I am not focusing on having a laptop for gaming.

I am finishing my study and thinking about working in a startup environment, where I'll need a computer strong enough to support CAD, but also be quite presentable and have a nice screen for office work (powepoint, etc..).

So far, I was thinking about the matebook x pro from huawei because it is beautiful, and the screen seems very good (and have a touchscreen) while still having good performance.

    Below, the form!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 1000/1500e max, France.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Specs and battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, but not has much as much as acceptable performance. The computer should still be slick and not "portable gamer" style

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows and a bit of Linux on a VM

      • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A, but 13 is my standard

      • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Bit of everything, Cad like solid works and catia, and video editing with filmora

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I already have a desktop pc, so no need for gaming, but it is a plus during trips

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Keyboard and screen are very important. Touchscreen is a nice plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Most of the context is given at the start of the post :)

    Thank you!

Acer Aspire 3, Lenovo Ideapad 330s or Lenovo V155?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 03:21 AM PDT

    Hey there

So I am currently looking to buy a new laptop for school. After hours of searching I have narrowed my options down to three. Though, I can't figure out which one of them is the best. My alternatives are:

    Acer Aspire 3: https://www.komplett.dk/product/1125672/pc-tablets/pc-baerbar-laptop/alle-baerbare/acer-aspire-3-156-fhd-mat#

    Lenovo Ideapad 330s: https://www.komplett.dk/product/1131392/pc-tablets/pc-baerbar-laptop/ultraportable/lenovo-ideapad-330s-156-fhd#

    Lenovo V155: https://www.komplett.dk/product/1125820/pc-tablets/pc-baerbar-laptop/alle-baerbare/lenovo-v155-156-fhd-mat#

Now, looking only at the specs, to me, it seems like the Acer wins. Though, after scrolling through various of discussions it seems like that might not be the case. Apparently it comes down to TDP which I can't find any information on regarding these PC's. I really don't know much about this at all, so if anyone could help in any way that would be much appreciated.

The price is almost the same on all three of them, so that is not something to worry about.

    (UK) Help with PCSpecialist Build

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 02:02 AM PDT

    Hello /r/suggestalaptop!

I would like some advice on a laptop I've specced (info below)
So I'm trying to upgrade from my old 2013 laptop that a friend helped me spec. I've gone for 16GB RAM because I do some picture/sound editing, and may do video editing in the future. I am also a tabletop GM and need it to run a few different softwares at a time for periods of 6-10hrs (went for higher speed too) I would like to play games on reasonable graphics settings (no 4K, Reliable 30fps fine). I will use the laptop for extended periods of time very frequently (Running basically all the time when I am home barring sleep – have regular 9-5 job)

Cost right now on PC specialist is £1,516. Had a great experience with PCS before so am using them again.
Am I getting what I need for the budget?
    Am I buying components I don't need?
Do the storage devices look alright?
Want to get my money's worth for my 1.5k budget and have very little knowledge in this area.

Specs: Chassis: 15.6 Recoil III RTX
Processor: Intel Core i7 Six Core 9750H (2.6GHz, 4.5GHz Turbo)
    Memory: 16GB Corsair 2666MHz DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
    Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 – 6.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM – DirectX 12.1
    1st Storage Device: 250GB Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
    1st M.2 SSD Drive: 1TB INTEL 660p M.2 NVMe PCle SSD (upto 1800MB/sR | 1800MB/sW)
Other options: Cooler Master Mastergel Maker Thermal Compound

Budget ~600€, location Estonia. Any help or advice

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 01:53 AM PDT

    Hey!

Would like some help buying a laptop. I'm on mobile, I apologise for any poor formatting.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Around 600€ Estonia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not a necessity but will be carrying it around a lot, so would be a nice add.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Would be nice if over 14".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Would be using Adobe premiere, after effects, illustrator and Photoshop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Would game but not a necessity.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have a PC at home that I mainly use for editing and gaming. But would like to do some quick edits on the run.

Taking my laptop specifications to account, I think buying used would probably be the best bet for me. Won't be getting anything remarkable for ~600€.

Was thinking of getting a used

dell precision 3510 Price: 580€ Processor i7-6820HQ 2,70 GHz 4-core Hard drive 512GB SSD MemoryRAM (MB): 16384MB ScreenScreen size 15,6" IPS Resolution 1920x1080 Graphics card AMD FirePro W5130M

Would this be a good buy or can I get something better?

Apologies for the long post, hope you can help and thank you beforehand for any thoughts and suggestions.

    Thanks for reading.

    School Laptop

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 10:04 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    1000.00, US

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specifications for the money I suppose. 2 in 1 seems like something I could see our family using a lot, and good battery life would be anything with over 8 hours.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Weight would be nice if under 4.5ish. Thinness is not a deal breaker up to a point-I don't want a dictionary thick laptop.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

14-16 inch. 15.6 seems better for presentations.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Possibly some minor photo editing. I want to say no games, but maybe. Possibly Minecraft or Terraria.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

120 FPS or GTFO, or 30+ realistically.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

++ Reliable build quality ++, optical drive (schmaybe), it will need to be docked occasionally.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Thank you. You guys are great.

Looking for a laptop for coding, web design and watching movies preferably under 600 dollars (in the US)

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 07:11 PM PDT

I had an Asus Q504UAK but the hinges broke, the screen cracked and it's 559 dollars to repair so I'd rather just get a new computer and I'm pretty much just looking to replace it. That computer had an Intel I5 processor (2.6GHz) with a 1TB and 12GB of Ram. It also has a touchscreen and a 1920 resolution display, both of which I'd like to get again (Though they aren't super necessary).

So far, the best I can find is a Dell Inspiron 15 for 580 dollars, which seems to have pretty much all of the same specs (except the processor is 1.6 GHz) but the reviews aren't super promising.

I'm not working a very good job right now, which is why I'm just looking to replace my old one instead of getting something more high-end.

Any help you guys can provide would be great!

Oh, and here's the form thing:

Total budget and country of purchase:

    • 500-600 dollars US

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • I would actually prefer to not get a 2-in-1 since I've had 2 so far and they've both had broken hinges. They seem to be kinda fragile and that's not helpful since I commute with my computer a lot.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not very important. I don't want something huge, but I don't need something razor-thin either.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows 10, please.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Not super important but I'd prefer at least 15 inches.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • I'm trying to become a web designer so I might need to do some photo editing but that's it. No heavy gaming or anything

    Football Manager Laptop...

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 01:07 AM PDT

    Hello ladies and gents,

I'm trying to find the best laptop to play Football Manager 2020... I've listed the specs below that the current version requires as a minimum according to the developer.

So anyone who has played this from this subreddit knows how addictive this can be... It's marriage ruining! Best to go out with a bang then on an all singing all dancing laptop that runs Football Manager at the speed of light.

If anyone can make a recommendation to me (UK) for a laptop that is going to essentially smash everything on this list at a budget of £700 or so (can obviously go under).

    Thanks for your time team.

Here are the Football Manager 2019 System Requirements (Minimum)

    • CPU: Intel Pentium 4, Intel Core or AMD Athlon – 2.2 GHz +
    • CPU SPEED: Info
    • RAM: 2 GB
    • OS: Windows 7 (SP1), 8/8.1, 10 (1803/April 2018 Update) – 64-bit or 32-bit
    • VIDEO CARD: Intel GMA X4500, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT or AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 – 256MB VRAM
    • PIXEL SHADER: 4.0
    • VERTEX SHADER: 4.0
    • FREE DISK SPACE: 7 GB

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Laptop for engineering student <1400€

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 12:46 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

After looking at many advice on the internet and here, I'm making a post since I still can't chose a laptop.

*Total budget and country of purchase:* Total budget is 1400€ but I'd prefer something around 1200-1300€.

*Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.* I'll need a good battery since I'll be carrying my laptop around. Don't care about 2 in 1 form

*How important is weight and thinness to you?* Not very important but I'll prefer a lighter laptop that doesn't look like a spaceship

*Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.* I'd prefer without OS so that I can setup windows and Linux cheaper but it seems pretty rare.

*Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.* 15 inches sounds good.

*Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.* I will probably do some CAD but that will not be the main use. Mainly taking notes, and web browsing. I'd like to be able to run games, basic ones such as Minecraft or terraria but also heavier games like PUBG, without lagging.

*If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?* I want to be able to hit 60fps

*Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?* I'd like a good keyboard and great build quality.

*Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.* Aiming for 16gb of RAM but it can be 8.

I was initially looking at the msi prestige ps63 modern with a gtx 1050, 512gb ssd and 16gb of ram for 1300€, but I'm not sure If it's the right laptop and I have difficulty justifying buying such an expensive product, it needs to be among the best I can get for the price.

    Thanks a lot :)

[US, 1000+, ~13"] Looking for a new 2-in-1 for college

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 08:57 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

US, probably under $2k but flexible.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2-in-1, preferably not with a removable keyboard. I want to be able to comfortably read books/comics or watch TV/movies without the keyboard getting in the way, but since I'll be primarily using it a laptop, I don't want a flimsy keyboard -- build quality is important to me. Since I'll be out a lot, I can't have something I'll be needing to keep plugged in all the time. I also want as powerful specs as possible -- though my current load isn't at all computing intensive, I don't know if I'll pick up a more intense hobby later on, whether that's video editing, gaming, etc. -- and especially since the next laptop I get 4-5 years down the line will likely be on a much tighter budget than now, I'd rather overshoot than have to replace earlier than otherwise. I may be doing a degree in CS, so keep that in mind.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I need something I can walk around with in a bag without it putting too much strain on anything. My previous laptop, early-2015 Macbook Air, was good for this -- 2.96 lb. Thinness is less important than weight, but I would like something that looks good. And of course this is hard to balance with the fact that I really hate the cheap plasticky feel of a lot of computers, but hopefully you guys can help me out. I'd rather have a heavier computer with better build quality than a lighter one that feels shit.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows/Linux dual-boot.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

My last laptop was 13-inch, and that seemed sufficient, but since it had a pretty thick border around the actual screen, maybe a 14-inch would be ok. 15 would probably be too big, and too much under 13 too small -- I want to be able to see things well on a reasonable-sized screen.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Not at the moment, but I'm 19, things may very easily change in the future.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and build quality, good enough speakers I could watch TV/movies on it (which I will be doing), the highest quality (touch) screen available. Fingerprint reader not necessary, neither is optical drive, but I do want good I/O -- I don't much like dongles. Maybe 0.5 TB SSD, though I think that's fairly standard and doesn't need to be specified.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I know I'm asking a lot. Other than build quality and speakers, it seems like the new LG Gram 2-in-1 might be what I'm looking for, but idk. There are too many options, and none of them seem good enough. Help appreciated.

Looking for a decent gaming/audio laptop, roughly around $500-$1000.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 06:41 PM PDT

I need a laptop that runs well enough to comfortably run games like Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim and Oblivion (not necessarily at the highest graphics settings) that can also handle amateur audio engineering and editing.

Nothing terribly fancy, preferably a Windows OS and a half decent battery life. I also need something that will last a few years as long as I don't drop it or get weatherbug accidentally. My budget is around $500-$1000 but that's flexible if it's really worth it. And I absolutely do not want to build a PC.

Other than that I'm open to all suggestions. I'm fairly new to PC aside from a $400 money hole I tried building in 7th grade, so anybody who knows their shit could be saving my ass here.

looking for some advice in choosing a laptop (~$800 CAD) for a computer science degree program

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 06:36 PM PDT

I will be going into a comp sci program this coming fall, and it seems a laptop is pretty much required. The university hasn't given me any info on what the courses will require in terms of computer work, so I'm going with the general assumption that I will need to be able to get it started quick, run something like Visual Studio, then carry it off to the next class to take some notes. First year will have stuff like intro to C and UNIX, and later on will be database systems and artificial intelligence.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Will be purchasing in-store or online in Canada, using CAD. Looking to spend around $800. The "quick picks" in the sidebar have been useless to me, as the prices are wildly different in Canada.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Battery should ideally last 6+ hours. I don't care too much about form factor or looks.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'll be carrying it around all day, lighter is better. Needs to be thin enough to fit in a laptop sleeve.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I'll be sticking to Windows for now, I don't have the time to get into a new OS. Linux dual-boot or VM may be something in the future for me.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    n/a

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will not be running games on this. No clue if any specific IDE will be required, but I'm going to go with Eclipse and Visual Studio for now. Microsoft Office will also be used, but this should run on anything, right?

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I already have a desktop for gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Since I will be programming, I need a good keyboard, though I don't know what makes a keyboard "good". I strongly prefer an SSD over an HDD or those SSD+HDD laptops. Not sure how battery endurance works, but I hope it can last 4-5 years.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't really care about the screen quality too much, just as long as its 1080p or higher is fine. I really don't know what I'm heading into, so if any past/present computer science students could share their experiences, that would be great!

Currently, I'm deciding between this Inspiron ($729) and this Vivobook ($700). I chose these for their 8th gen i5 cpus (which should have good performance while maintaining decent battery life), the decently big SSDs, and the 1920x1080 screens.

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit for this but I need help. My laptop just broke which is all I use to play games and I need suggestions for good cheap ones that will last me a while and can run recent games on low or maybe even medium settings.
