I've been troubleshooting this issue with my ram:

https://imgur.com/Xjx4FER What do I do now? I checked for damage to the pins and it seems fine how do I get the cpu loose?

Edit: Thanks for the replies everyone, I not only managed to pry it loose, but my original issue was solved. Ya'll are amazing!

After years of lurking, I'm officially a part of the community!

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 09:19 AM PDT

With Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and Cross Save around the corner I finally convinced myself to go for it and build a PC. This isn't my first build as I've helped friends and other family in the past but it's the first one I've built for myself. Headline specs are the Ryzen 3700X and a RTX 2070 Super but I'll have the PC Part picker list at the bottom for full details as well as an imgur link to some photos.

I couldn't be happier with how it came out! I admit that it was pricey due to the case/ram/fans I went with but aesthetics were important to me and I was okay with paying for the RGB tax to customize the look. (it's also no longer rainbow unicorn vomit this was on first boot to make sure everything was in working order). Performance wise it's exactly what you'd expect for the combo I went with. It's chewed through every game I've put it through so far (I built it Friday and spent the weekend with it) and since then I've flipped the fans on the side to intake for better performance.

    Can't wait for October 1st!

Is it really crazy to buy a GPU w/o ray tracing in 2019?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:37 AM PDT

As some of you may know, the CEO of a certain company recently said "At this point, it's a foregone conclusion that [if someone is] going to buy a new graphics card, and it's going to the last 2, 3, 4 years to not have ray tracing is just crazy... Ray tracing content just keeps coming out." Now, I understand that to some extent he has to shill his company and its products, and so of course this is what he'll say. However, I'm actually kinda inclined to agree with him. Navi is cool and all, and provides more frames per dollar, but ultimately is it really a good idea to buy an expensive gpu that you're planning on using for the next 3-5 years that doesn't come with one of the latest advances in graphics technology that even next-gen consoles will have? It's true that currently there's not many games that support RTX, and the ones that do only implement it to a certain extent. Over the next few years, however, it seems inevitable that ray tracing will become much more mainstream, and that by buying a Navi card I'll miss out on it. Currently, I have the option of buying a RX 5700XT, RTX 2060 Super, or RTX 2070 clearance, which all cost $400. Which do you guys think I should buy? Curious to hear your thoughts.

TL;DR: Is it worth buying Nvidia cards over Navi in order to future proof for coming ray tracing games, even though they don't provide as many frames per dollar?

A weak graphics card with a strong PC

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:03 PM PDT

I am currently building a pc for my brother, he has a GTX 670, and wants to use that until he gets a few more paychecks and buys a new graphics card. I am making him a beastley PC around it, should I be worried about the damage that could be done to the GPU because it is such a weak graphics card or am I good. Like could any harm be done to the computer or to the GPU?

P.S he plans on upgrading to a RTX 2070 once he gets his next pay check

    Best 1080p 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:06 AM PDT

I currently own a LG 29UM68-P, but Im looking to moving into a 144hz monitor and use the LG I currently own as a secondary monitor. From doing some research, it looks like the Optix MAG241C is a good 144hz option. Anyone has any other recommendations?

Build ready, minus case. Which of these budget case (< $60) got the best air flow & easiest to build and maintain?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 09:47 AM PDT

Fractal Focus G, Thermaltake Versa H18, Cougar MX330, Tecware Nexus M.

I know Meshify C is more popular 'round here but I'm on a budget (no more than $60), so. I've thought of Cooler Master MB511 but that huge rig and huge amount of fans I guess is more fitting for overclocker? Not sure if it fits me, but.

If you got something good feel free to recommend! Function over forms, for me.

Oh and here's my build btw.

I have my cpu overclocked to 4.8ghz at 1.2 volts, temps are good hovering around mid 70's.

All of a sudden my game freezes for about 5 seconds and I check msi afterburner, my cpu has spiked to 100°c and then returns to mid 70's

What is causing these spikes and how do I fix it?

OSs: Ubuntu 18.04 for productivity on one SDD, and Windows 10 for Office Products and gaming on the other SSD.

Ubuntu Usage: Programming and CPU-intensive machine learning. Single-threaded performance is king for me (thus the 9700). I plan on overclocking the CPU a bit. Also, some deep learning on the GPU (so restricted to NVIDIA).

Windows Usage: for the kind of games I prefer, (mostly simulation/strategy) single-threaded performance is also king.

    Part-Specific Questions:

    1) I don't know much about mobos, this one seemed like a well-reviewed one for overclocking, cooling, etc. Is this one a good choice?

    2) Any recommendations on which aftermarket 2070 to purchase? I was interested in some 2070 super models as well (many are only $50-100 more and have significantly higher performance), but the bad reviews on all the not-sold-out models scared me off.

    3) Is the cooling (case, cpu fan, etc.) sufficient for the CPU (overclocked a bit) + GPU running at max load for extended periods?

    4) Any comments on the case? Airflow and durability (I will be moving and transporting the computer frequently) are the most important aspects for me.

Any other comments or suggestions are welcome, thank you!

    Feeling Guilty About Treating Myself

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:59 PM PDT

I've always wanted to build my own pc and I've finally came into the money to build it and I even ordered a monitor (I got a great deal on it) and picked out all the parts on pc part picker and it'll come out to be $3,800. Now that it's real and I'm so close to having it I'm feeling guilty about spending so much money on myself and I feel like I don't deserve it or the money could be put to better use. I don't know what to do.

Do you ever feel like a surrogate mother giving away a baby after helping a friend build a PC?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:57 AM PDT

I helped my friend build a PC this weekend. It was an awesome experience as I guided him through the purchasing, and pretty much did the main assembly (with his cautious help), as he was a bit anxious to do some of the work himself (I kept reassuring him that he wouldn't break anything). We had a few hiccups and issues along the way (man, that Wraith Spire is a bitch to mount), but everything just worked out of the box and we installed Windows without issues, and everything seems to be working great.

The sad part is that now I've left the 'baby' with his new parent and I don't get to play with it ;) I keep thinking about upgrades, tests or tweaks to implement but it's no longer up to me. Need to find another friend that wants a PC now!

Are backplates interchangeable for GPUs? Watercooling RTX 2080 ti with a HeatKiller IV waterblock.

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:33 PM PDT

As the title says, I'm watercooling my RTX 2080 ti with a heatkiller IV waterblock. However, the heatkiller backplates are sold out everywhere.

Building my system into a table, so not using a case. I need the backplate more so for mounting purposes, not for cooling. I plan on mounting the GPU right beside the motherboard using thermaltake riser cable.

But I'm not sure how to secure it on the wooden table. I figured I could epoxy some L-shaped brackets to the backplate, and install the GPU onto the backplate and seure the whole thing to the table using the L-shaped bracket.

What can I do with a Spare PC?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:32 PM PDT

So my buddy gave me his old computer that was pretty beefy for the time. I already have a home server so there wouldn't be a reason for me to do do that with this PC. I was thinking something that's a bit more heavy duty like rendering but i barely do that. Suggestions are welcome, Thanks

    Specs:
    Core i7-975
    Asus P6t Deluxe V2
    Samsung 9GB DDR3 1333MHz Triple Channel
    EVGA GTS 250
    2x 120GB unbranded SSDs in Raid 0
    1TB Seagate HDD

Nobody in my Family needs another PC so that is out of the question.

Screws stripped and they want us to pay 25 bucks?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:40 PM PDT

My friend bought a deepcool gammaxx 400 cooler last week and while installing, the screws stripped. This made the brackets really loose and impacted thermal performance. It won't stick to the point that if he turns his case sideways, so that his cooler is upright, he gets up to ~10 degrees better cooling. He contacted them and said that he would have to pay $25 for replacements. Reminder that the cooler itself costs $20. I'm short, they basically just said "sucks". What do you guys think he can/should do?

Edit: I have read your responses and I will relay it to my friend.

Computer unstable with 4 ram sticks

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 07:38 AM PDT

So I finally figured out what was causing my problems (at least I hope this is the cause and not a symptom). So I have 32gb of ram (4x8gb) and when I plug all 4 sticks in, my computer becomes unstable. The ram sticks are all the exact same model save for color, so thez are really two 16gb kits. It doesn't matter which ram sticks I use, 2 is fine, 4 is not. So far, I've always made sure that if 2 are in, they are both in 1 and 3, which are the preferred slots for my mb, but should I try leaving 1 and 3 empty and putting them in 2 and 4? Will it work with that? I want to try and RMA the broken piece, but do we know definitively if it's the MB, CPU, or even RAM? I don't really have the money (at the moment) or any friends with compatible parts to try and troubleshoot. Also for a while, ocerclocking the CPU would make it more stable? I'm not sure if that means anything or if it was a coincidence.

    CPU: 2700

MB: gigabyte AB350 gaming 3 (I wouldn't be surprised if this model was just a shitty board, I've been thinking of upgrading to a asrock x570 steel legend, so as soon as I actually have money, this might be a good time)

    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200

High cpu temperatures for ryzen 3700x under load

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:28 PM PDT

I just recently finished building my first pc and so far it has been working as expected without any crashes. However using monitoring tools im noticing what (from my limited understanding) seems to be high temperatures for the cpu and gpu. While playing wolfenstein youngblood the 3700x (with stock cooler) is hovering around 84/85 degrees celsius (https://imgur.com/a/gz4BFof). The gpu (rog strix rtx2080) is around 75 degrees celsius (https://imgur.com/a/cFnl3W0). Is this considered normal or could it be:

    a) poor cooling

    b) mistake when installing cooler (i did struggle with it a bit and initially attached it the wrong way)

    c) malfunctioning parts?

im playing the game on "Mein leben!" with 1440p 144hz monitor.

    My setup:

cpu: AMD ryzen 3700x (with stock cooler wraith prism)

gpu: Asus geforce rog strix rtx2080 OC

motherboard: msi b450 pro carbon (with beta bios for ryzen 3000)

ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 16GB (xmp overclocked)

    storage: Intel 660p 1TB M.2 SSD

    Case: Meshify C temp G

Looking to upgrade Graphics Card, need advice on what to pick

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:26 PM PDT

Hello, I am currently looking at trying to potentially upgrade my graphics card for Destiny 2 as I believe the video memory is too small.

    Current build:

    Graphics Card: GTX 1060 3GB CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600x Motherboard: Micro-Star International Co. Ltd. B450M PRO-VDH (MS-7A38) (AM4) 16 GB Ram

Currently I was looking at the 1660

However is that a good enough investment to warrant $270? I'm trying to get a solid 60 fps with Destiny 2 and besides that I only play games like Skyrim SE on my PC so I'm not trying to run anything crazy. Are there better deals/ picks? Or should I instead try to upgrade my CPU? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Why are 2.5 inch Hard Drives 5400RPM and 3.5 inch Hard Drives 7200RPM?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:45 PM PDT

I'm interested in picking up a 2.5 inch drive but I'm quite concerned about them being only 5400RPM, whilst the 3.5 inch Hard Drives are 7200RPM. Can somebody explain to me why this is the case, and if it is something I should be concerned about. Specifically interested in picking up the Barracuda or Firecuda, although I'd appreciate any feedback on whether or not these are good choicescto begin with. I've heard that Seagate drives tend to have a higher failure rate than most.

Advice needed for a Video Editing pc to handle 4k footage with a £1000 budget

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 10:17 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Im trying to build a video editing pc for my uncle, he has a business doing wedding videos. His latest pc is still decent but its struggling to handle 4k footage and he is interested in upgrading. I told him it would probably be much cheaper if we built it ourselves rather than going to a shop.

He uses Edius 9 to edit. Currently hes ok editing 1080p but it is a bit stuttery at 4k and a slideshow when he starts putting effects on 4k such as stablisation, colour balancing, sharpening etc.

His current pc I think has an i7-4790K. Im a little confused as to the precise setup of this machine because what he tells me and what I observe doesnt entirely make sense. He tells me the shop told him he had to plug the monitor into the motherboard (integrated graphics) and not the graphics card otherwise it wont encode H.264 files quickly? He has a graphics card installed and it lights up but the fans dont spin and I opened GPU-Z while he was editing and the GPU was not being utilised atall. If that makes sense to anyone please let me know.

His budget is around £1000 and Im trying to build a pc with a Ryzen 3700x as that seems a beast of a processor to use for editing. I have skimped a bit on the graphics card because I dont think that will be needed much for editing, can anyone tell me if im wrong here and it will need a better graphics card?

The motherboard I choose is a B450 Tomahawk Max because I dont think the added features of the X570 will be needed and the Max is supposed to have an updated bios so I wont need to do a bios update for the new Ryzen chip.

He wont be using it for any gaming so that is not a concern. He doesn't need monitors/keyboards/mice/windows etc.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you.

First build, ~$1500-$1600 budget, looking for feedback and suggestions

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Hey, first time posting here on reddit, although I've been a lurker on tech subreddits for quite some time. I'm getting ready to build my first PC. While I am pretty sure about my choices, I definitely hope to hear from people with more experience and knowledge as to whether my part list makes sense and what can possibly be improved. My budget is around $1500, although I could go slightly up. PC will be used predominantly for gaming, but also for light productivity tasks, since I frequently work from home. What I'm looking for is 1440p 144hz level of gaming performance, although for the next month or two I'll be using 1080p 60hz monitor, until I get myself a decent 1440p monitor like Acer XF270HU or LG 32GK650F-B. I am also thinking of starting to dabble a bit in streaming and video creation, so I was making the list with that in mind. So, to cut to the chase, here's the list and below I'll explain my choices as well as list alternatives that I'm considering, since my purchases will depend somewhat on the availablity of certain items in my local Microcenter in Tustin, CA (where I'd prefer to purchase most if not all of the parts this or next week) as well as the prices.

    CPU

I'm going with 3700X, because I believe this to be the best bang for the buck in my situation. If I were looking for purely gaming build, I think I could go with 3600, but I would prefer to have those 2 additional cores for better multicore performance and multitasking. No CPU cooler as of now, since I will be perfectly comfortable with Wraith Prism. Might purchase something beefier down the line if I'll deem it necessary.

    MOBO

Some time ago I was considering MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC, but after seeing a significant amount of people having issues with BIOS flashback, I decided to go with X570 for the sake of simplicity. On top of that I like the features X570 brings with it. I am planning to go with Aorus Pro Wifi, although it's not in stock in my local Microcenter as of now, so I might end up with Aorus Ultra. I don't mind the additional 30 bucks, since I'm getting 50 off with Microcenter bundle deal.

    RAM

Once again, seems like a best bang for the buck, because it'll end up costing me $125 at Microcenter. E-die, decent OC overhead based on posts I've seen around. 32GB predominantly because of Cities:Skylines, which, when modded, puts Chrome to shame and takes the RAM hog crown without breaking a sweat.

    Storage

For now I don't need anything more than 1TB quite frankly. Going NVME for speed and ease of installation. No reason not to considering current pricing. Main options I'm considering is Sabrent Rocket, listed above, and Adata SX8200 Pro, which I might grab if it goes on sale for ~$100, which it seems to do from time to time. Another option that I was looking into a bit is Inland Performance 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD which is one of the few reasonable options at my local Microcenter. While I am fully aware that I won't see virtually any gaming performance gain from going to PCIe 4.0 over 3.0, I could go with that just for the sake of getting the newer technology and higher speeds in non-gaming tasks. My main concern regarding this drive is the heatsink, since I saw quite a few users posting about their issues with clearance. Would I have any issues installing it on X570 Aorus Pro Wifi or X570 Aorus Ultra?

    Graphics Card

Frankly, the most troublesome part due to timing. I've been waiting for AIB 5700XT models to come out, but the stock situation is horrendous and I don't really feel like waiting another month to be able to get them without any issues. Ideally I'd prefer listed Red Devil, but if that won't work out I'll either hit up r/hardwareswap and try snagging Radeon VII (or maybe even go Nvidia with like 2070S or 2080) or grab the best deal at Microcenter like some open box 5700 and then just upgrade late this year or next year to new stronger Radeon model.

    Case

Not much to say here. Beloved Meshify C will work out the best for me, since I'm going with aircooling. Aesthetically it's also one of the few cases I don't have any qualms about. My only worries are the clearance and fans. I was wondering if all of the components fit nicely in case and whether I'll be okay going with the fans that come with the case for now or should I look into getting additional fans from the get go? If so, which one would you recommend?

    PSU

Don't have much preference here. I'm going with this unit, because it'll end up costing me $100 at Microcenter after rebate. A bit of an overkill with 850 watts, but the price isn't too high and the model is of p good quality.

    Peripherals

I don't plan to purchase anything as of now. As I've mentioned, I will be buying 1440p 144hz VA or IPS panel month or two from now and for the time being I'll stick with the 1080p 60hz unit I have. Mouse that I'm using is some ridiculously cheap ASUS wireless mouse that i got 4 years ago for $10 and which has been working perfectly for me ever since and the keyboard I own and sometimes use is Vortex Pok3r. For now those will suffice, but if any of you have any suggestions regarding mouse and keyboard without outrageous "gamer" aesthetics (clean black look with nice RGB and good build quality is what I'll be looking for) I'm more than happy to hear from you.

I presume this is about it. If I made any mistakes, please point them out (as I've mentioned, it's my first ever post on reddit). Thanks!
