Putting IOT Devices on their on VLAN, how to get things like Casting to work? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:00 AM PDT So im trying to wrap my head around this... I plan on eventually getting a USG to upgrade my R7000. I know I have some questionable IOT Devices (Foscam cameras) so I want to put them on their own Vlan. But I also have Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV. I love how I can open up a video, click cast to device X and it just works. If I segregate IOT stuff to be separate, wont I lose this ability? Im sure there is a way around it, I just want to understand before I dive in. [link] [comments] |
Can you comnect a Cat6 cable into a Cat5e port? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:07 PM PDT Hello, I just got a pc and i'm figuring out ethernet to work on it. I bought two cat6 ethernet cables and plugged the first one into my router and plugged it in to the built in wall ethernet adapters that says "Cat 5e", then I plugged the second one from another "Cat 5e" built in wall adapter to my pc in my bedroom. I know this maybe a noob question but I have never/rarely used ethernet in my whole life. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Unplugging Macbook Pro from USB-C hub kills entire network connection Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:26 PM PDT I have a 2017 Macbook Pro currently utilizing a USB-C hub for ethernet, HDMI to monitor, and a few other peripherals. The ethernet from the USB hub runs to an unmanaged TP-Link 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch with an Unraid server and another line out to an Asus RT-N66U wireless router. When I disconnect my laptop from the USB-C hub, the entire network goes down and with it my internet connection. Anyone have any insight here? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Noob guide to QoS prioritizing? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 05:28 PM PDT Wasn't sure where to post this so I went to the first subreddit I could think of (didn't work) so I was sent to this one. Living in a house that has a steady 8 devices running on one router. Since I pay for it, I want to prioritize my laptop and PS4 on the wireless connection for when I'm not using an ethernet cable, but I'm very new to networking and such. I got to the QoS drop down menu and it has both Qos Queue and QoS Classification. I'm assuming, when you're wanting to prioritize something, you'd use the classification. However, I'm not sure where to find the info nor do I know what to put for each section (examples being destination MAC address, DSCP, ether type, etc). I already know my laptop and PS4's MAC addresses, but that's really it. If anyone could just give me a quick rundown or refer me to some kind of 'guide' that would be great. [link] [comments] |
Recommend and 2/1 Modem Router AZ USA Cox communications Posted: 26 Aug 2019 05:27 PM PDT Arizona, cox cable 150 Mbs service, docsis 3.1 They are a family of three with 12-15 connected devices in a single level 1600 square foot home. I know its better to have these units separate.( suggest these as well please, MAYBE i can convince them to go that route). Some friends who are trying to get away from the 3 year old netgear) AIO combo rental they have would like a similar unit( "less to deal with"). IS there a de-facto "best" in this realm? Got a 4G router that I don't need... what to do with it? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:43 AM PDT As the title says, I moved from 4G router to cable, and since I have the device itself... I was wondering if anyone has an idea how to use it - or should I just sell it and be done with it? The house is covered with wifi, and I don't have any other place where it would be beneficial to have a 4G router in use. [link] [comments] |
Surfboard 6141 freezing up but works after reset. Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:25 PM PDT I have a surfboard 6141 that's been working fine for a year and recently it started to freeze up every couple days. After a power reboot it works fine until the next freeze. I tried enabling qos on my ubiquity erx router and I tried a different power supply, neither have worked. The signal to noise ratio and upstream is 38db and the downstream is 10. I'm on optimum internet. Anyone have any clue as to what I can do to fix this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 02:56 PM PDT A few months ago, I posted a crude diagram of my proposed network and asked how I could improve it, the most common issue was my outdated 10/100 switches, today I stand before you , with another crude diagram, of the complete network, with full gigabit and failsafe internet [link] [comments] |
Home Networking Noob needing help with Eero Mesh and Gigapower AT&T please!! Posted: 26 Aug 2019 02:28 PM PDT I have had AT&T Gigapower fiber for a few years now. I have been less than thrilled with the actual speeds I am getting (250 down / 150 up) and I was hoping to get some advise on what I might be doing wrong or how I can improve my network. I did my best to research this sub ahead of time but didn't see anything that provided quite what I was looking for. A network engineer at my company told me he was seeing around 800 up and 600 down using the EERO mesh network and he also has ATT gigapower. I purchased an EERO pro with two beacons last week, but after going through the setup I am seeing 950 down and 900 up on the app itself, but when I connected my PS4 Pro to the network and did a speed test it only registered 50 down and 1 up... WTF. My PS4 is about 3 feet from the first beacon. I suspect I may need to turn off my ATT Wifi on the Pace Router, but I can't find clear info on exactly how to do that. I created a network drawing of my system, but I can't upload it for some reason, so I will describe my setup as follows: fiber comes into the house via a converter which converts to cat 5. Cat 5 goes into my Pace 5286ac router. The ports on that router go to several devices, a 4 port gig switch and an 8 port gig switch with POE. My EERO comes off of my 8 port switch. If I could figure out how to upload the drawing I made I would gladly do that. I would be thankful for any help that could be provided! [link] [comments] |
Can't get mDNS working across networks with Avahi & pfSense Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:57 PM PDT I have a pfSense box running as the router/firewall for my home network. I have 4 interfaces: WAN, LAN, IoT, & Guest. Each of the three local interfaces (LAN, IoT & Guest) has a corresponding WLAN. I have some Chromecast devices on my IoT VLAN, and the goal is for devices on the LAN and Guest networks to be able to discover and cast to these devices. To that end, I've temporarily opened up the firewall rules on the LAN, IoT & Guest interfaces and have installed and run the 'Avahi' package on pfSense. I'm running Ubiquiti AC Pro APs, so I've also gone into the controller under Site and disabled the 'auto optimize' option, as I understand that leaving that enabled can essentially break a lot of multicast traffic. I've also tried enabling/disabling the IGMP3 option on each WLAN. The problem is that when my mobile device is connected to the same WLAN as the Chromecasts, it can find and cast to it fine, but when it's on a different WLAN, it can't find the Chromecasts. Here's my basic network setup:
All of this works fine in terms of network access - everything can ping and pass traffic to everything else across the various networks, and I've verified that my phone can ping the Chromecasts across networks, but for some reason I can't get mDNS discovery working. I've also tried disabling IGMP snooping globally in the Cisco switch (it was enabled by default), but to be honest, I'm not 100% sure what that does or if it could be part of the problem. Suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Bought a new home, and am looking to set up a new wifi connection, looking for second opinions Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:42 PM PDT My wife and I recently took the dive into home-ownership and I was charged with the task of setting up the internet, and while I like to think of myself as decently tech savy, networking is a bit of a weakness of mine. About our internet usage and home:
Now after having done some research I feel as though I have found some decent answers to our usage. For our ISP, I am leaning towards Comcast Xfinity Blast! Which they rate themselves at 250 Mbs for 54.99/mo The modem I am looking into is the MOTOROLA 24x8 MB7621 And the router I am looking at is the Netgear Nighthawk R6900P AC1900 I'm fairly confident this all should do the job well and then some, but being very green in this area of tech I don't want to underestimate all what we would need, or at the same time overshoot a ton. To those of you more savy in this department, does this seem like a decent setup? [link] [comments] |
Regular Gigabit switch or POE? HELP... Posted: 26 Aug 2019 03:06 PM PDT I have a question about these gigabit switches. Do I need to get just a regular switch or a POE switch? What is the difference? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 06:18 PM PDT With a wired connection to a PC I'm able to get speeds of upto 70 down. When I'm standing right next to the router, my phone gets about 60 down. Across the house from my room, both my phone and desktop(with a wireless usb) get between 9 to 12. However, both my phone and desktop report the signal strength to my router as being strong, meaning that I'm getting full bars of coverage. I don't know too much about how this stuff works so I'm not sure what I need to do in order to increase speeds across my house. Should I get a new router? A wifi extender maybe? And not sure if this extra bit of detail is necessary, but I have xfinity, meaning that there's a coax cable going into my modem router. Edit: My router is a Netgear C3000 [link] [comments] |
Does anyone know if this power adapter would work in a hot garage? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 06:13 PM PDT Hi all, I am looking to bring Wifi into my garage via powerline adapter, was wondering if anyone has experience with this, and if any of you think that there would be trouble using this during hot weather in my garage. I have not measured the temps during a heatwave, but It feels like its 40c in there.... TP-Link TL-PA9020P KIT AV2000 Powerline Adapter Kit Would it catch on fire or something? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 06:00 PM PDT So yesterday my internet began to stop working, after about an hour I came back to it and now it only partially works on my PC. I cannot access some parts of the internet, for example, I can use discord or play some games, the connection is really bad but I can still do it, I can connect to Reddit or some websites to a certain extent and only certain parts. Other websites I just cannot connect to, such as any google websites, so I cannot make any Google web search. I use an ethernet cable to connect to the router on the other side of my house, I have checked for any tears/fraying of the cord and I found zero. I have never experienced anything like this before or read about it and was wondering if I could get some help on the issue, thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 10:01 AM PDT I'm looking for a couple of switches to add to my network but really am not sure where to start. My router/cable modem is on my 1st floor. I'm looking to run an Ethernet cable down to the basement to provide internet to 2 TV's and a gaming PC, this line is already ran and it's connected directly to the gaming PC currently. I also want to run a 2nd line up to my attic and then down again to the 2nd floor for my surface pro (USB to Ethernet adapter) a couple of TV's and a PlayStation 4 pro. So I'm in the market for a switch for the 2nd floor and another switch for the basement. I've set up switches before with DHCP and I can get through that, I just wanted to make sure I was getting the proper hardware for full bandwidth and wasn't creating any bottlenecks. I have a Netgear R6400 router. My gaming PC is a Z390 Auros Pro-CF with Intel® Gigabit LAN with cFosSpeed so I would hope to take full advantage of whatever bandwidth it has, this PC is accessed remotely a lot with Parsec as well. Most of the TV's are 4k TV's so bandwidth is again a nice thing to have. Finally the PlayStation pro is used for Remote Play a lot so bandwidth is important. Do switches inherently become a bottleneck because you are splitting the internet? Also for the surface pro I'd be using a USB to Ethernet adapter on a USB dongle because it only has 1 USB port and I still need to run a mouse, would I create a bottleneck using this setup? It's the PC I use to stream TV in my bedroom so I'd like all the bandwidth possible. With that said are there any recommendations for what 2 switches I should purchase? Less expensive would be nice, but ultimately I will pay if it means I don't create any bottlenecks. I'm kind of stumped as on Amazon you can get something super cheap or expensive and I don't really know what the difference is. [link] [comments] |
Got a new modem and now speeds are slower Posted: 26 Aug 2019 04:49 PM PDT Hey guys, Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, I couldn't find any other subreddits that seemed more fitting. So I have a bit of an odd situation on my hands, I recently upgraded my cable modem to a newer unit due to our speeds being bumped up to 500mbit by my ISP. The old unit (I can't remember the model of) would cap out at about 300 which is understandable as it's a 6+ year old unit. So my ISP supplied me with a new Arris Touchstone CM8200A which from my understanding should be able to easily get up to the 500mbit we have. However, after hooking it up and running some speed tests, I'm now only getting about 120-160mbit which just doesn't make any sense to me. I hooked everything up properly and the wires seem fine, but I'm somehow getting worse speeds. I have the 8200A hooked up to my Netgear N600 WNDR3700v4, It's an older unit for sure but it should be fine and I don't think that would cause such a drastic drop in speed, I've tried resetting everything and that didn't help. The cable company doesn't even know what's up. The most useful thing they said was "You should be getting the speeds sir, I'm not sure what's preventing you from reaching them" Any advice would be wonderful, and if there's any more information I can give you guys I'd be happy to do so, I'm no networking guy by any stretch of the imagination. Thanks a ton~ Edit: I'm getting those speeds over ethernet to my desktop, not wireless, should have said that in the first place, my bad. [link] [comments] |
Not sure if this is the right section but why do Fiber providers all use their own equipment ? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 04:39 PM PDT Google Fiber, Verizon FIOS, ATT Fiber, etc. Why can't they allow home users to use their own equipment? I know you can technically but you still have to use it with it. [link] [comments] |
WiFi keeps dropping when I connect my Xbox to our router using an Ethernet cable Posted: 26 Aug 2019 04:01 PM PDT I can't seem to figure out what to do to fix this. Every time I hardline to the router, all the devices in the house (Xbox included) no longer have internet access. what can I do to fix this? [link] [comments] |
Creating single unified network with 2 Nighthawks and 1 UniFi AP? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:08 PM PDT As in the title, I have 2 Netgear Nighthawks and a UniFi AP. I have a large communal living space and I want to create one wifi network too cover the entire space. If I were to factory reset all 3, how would I set them up to be one "wifi name"? Do I need to connect them by ethernet cable or is it a network setting to all be 3 access points for a single wifi network? Tech competent, but relatively new to networking with multiple APs. Maximising file transfer throughput Posted: 26 Aug 2019 03:28 PM PDT I am running local two Linux devices that both use a Gigabit Nic, and the Network router is 1000Mbps full Duplex however I get ~10MBs transferring from the two devices using scp and sftp. [link] [comments] |
Can someone ELI5 4G routers to me? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:59 PM PDT I know what a router does. I know what 4G is. I live in an area where 4G is my best option for home Internet (DSL doesn't reach, cable doesn't reach, satellite is an option but I don't want it for various reasons I'm not going to explain here). I use a hotspot (Verizon MiFi 7730 at the moment), and when I hit my 15 GB limit on hit, I use the hotspot on my phone (another 15 GB before the hotspot on it is throttled). Other than not trying to blow up batteries (my MiFi has wrecked 2 batteries so far), what, if any, benefit would I reap from using a 4G router instead of my current MiFi/Phone tethering situation? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Reviews on ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:06 AM PDT I've been looking for a good future proof router that can put out gigabit speeds at a consistent basis. I was scrolling through Instagram and this model popped up. It's an Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000. Reading the page makes it sound perfect but I thought I'd turn to you great people for your insight and possibly other product recommendations. [link] [comments] |
Best router under $60 for studio apartment Posted: 26 Aug 2019 02:19 PM PDT I've seen a lot of articles for best routers under __ amount or best routers for small apartments, but I'm looking for the cross section. Need a modemrouter or modem with Moca capability Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:55 PM PDT So my comcast box failed and i really wanna switch off but it does moca and i cant find any others that have this. I really need it cause i got my pc wired in through coax and i cant run a wire to it. Any models only one i see is SVG2482AC from arris and its kinda overpriced. Also i have a router so just a moca modem would be preferable Thanks [link] [comments] |
