New Intel Ice Lake chips natively support WiFi 6

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 11:13 AM PDT

Digital Trends reports that Ice Lake natively supports WiFi 6. However, I don't understand this passage:

    Intel's own version is called Wi-Fi 6 Gig+, which doubles Wi-Fi 6's support of 80MHz channels up to 160MHz.

What? Do they mean it's using 160 MHz when the standard doesn't include that frequency? How would it work with routers?

Need to replace a failing AC-RT68U

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 06:05 PM PDT

OK, so here's my situation, maybe I can get some advice.

The problem, first and foremost: Out phones (2 iphone XS, 1 Samsung S10e) and iPads have stopped connecting to the wifi. unless we reboot the router. This is an issue. In fact, this is the ONLY issue we're having. Before this, the wifi worked well for the space we have.

I currently rent one side of a duplex. 2 stories + basement, about 60' deep being very generous. I have a Gigabit connection from Comcast (950ish down, 45ish up), and I currently have an RT68U upstairs connected to the modem (Arris CM8200) and an 8 port switch. DNS is handled by a Raspberry Pi running Pi-Hole.

Downstairs I also have an 8 port switch. Everything is connected by a pair of MOCA adapters, and it's working great. I have my AV setup wired up, and my Apple TV is seeing about 850-900 down, 45 up when I run a speed test. My Apple TV routes through a VPN during hockey season (NHL.tv), so I can stream my local team without having a TV subscription.

I'm also planning on buying a house in the next 1-2 years, and I expect to need a more robust setup to go with the increased space. I'm figuring a mesh network or a router/converted desktop with a few APs. I don't really have the space to run a separate desktop currently. I wasn't planning on replacing/upgrading everything until we got the new place.

Now that that's out of the way...

A: Do I go with something like an Asus RT86U for $130ish off Amazon Warehouse and figure out another solution when I buy my place?

B: I picked up a Netgear Orbi RBK50 2 pack for $75 from Walmart, only to find that it doesn't allow you to connect out to a VPN, only to connect to your home network remotely. Can I add something to this to allow VPN functionality?

C: I can go whole hog, and pick up a router/AP, and eventually add another AP when I move. If I go that route, what would be a good router that can handle VPN duties? Since I'm saving for a house, I'd prefer not to spend a ridiculous amount. My original plan in the new house was to get a $150-200 desktop, learn a NIX based firewall setup, and have that running file server, firewall and ad blocking duties.

So there we have it. Sorry for the long winded post, I wanted to be as detailed as possible.

    RJ45 crimping problem

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 07:08 AM PDT

So, I'm currently doing my first cable crimping attempt using Cat7 cable and some basic RJ45 connectors.

    I'm currently following this guide:

    https://www.wikihow.com/Crimp-Rj45

I'm really having a rough time even getting the cable inserted in the first RJ45 connector - all the wires seem to jam on insertion just before the copper connectors and no amount of wiggling seems to get them further - and it's taken over an hour even to get them this close.

Is it possible that the RJ45 connectors are not the right size for this Cat7 cable?

Is there some incompatibility that I might not have considered?

Planning to switch to Frontier from AT&T.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 07:58 PM PDT

Hello Everyone. So I have been getting fisted right up the ass by AT&T recently and has decided to switch to Frontier, now I know that I live in an dense area but I have decided upon doing it manually since frontier probably has noone out here. Now here's the question. What's the best router+modem combo I can get under $100 but preferably at $70, I live in Rockford,Illinois to give an general understanding of my location. I have about 3 to 4 devices hooked up, for most of my time I browse shit and play games, though most of that is just gaming. I am just switching the Internet as I am going to take advantage of AT&Ts watchtv for television. And for my second question, I have picked out on router but isn't sure if it's compatible, here's the link to it: https://www.walmart.com/ip/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6183-16x4-Cable-Modem-DOCSIS-3-0-Certified-for-XFINITY-by-Comcast-Spectrum-Time-Warner-Cox-more-686-Mbps-Max-Speed/46099799 Otherwise for anyone who doesn't have the time to use the link, It's an Arris SURFboard SB6183.

Which router to buy - home network, UK, circa. £120.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 04:32 AM PDT

Currently using the router provided by talk talk. We have a 25mbps fibre connection. There is a bt box (modem?) connected to the talktalk provided router. It's on the first floor, I'm hoping an upgrade would increase speed for the ps4 on the same floor and the firestick downstairs.

Which router should I get? I prefer (but dont have to) use amazon as I got a £30 voucher from work and I have prime. Would be willing to go up to about £120? Most other devices on the network are phones and tablets.

    Thanks in advance

    AC86U (Downstairs) vs 2 TP-Link Archer C2300 (1 Downstairs, 1 Upstairs) - For maximum wifi range/speed?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 07:22 PM PDT

My primary internet switch is on the ground floor, which is where the router will be, I have an Ethernet port on the second floor where I can connect an extender router and was wondering what the best setup would be?

Currently I'm using a default ISP router and despite paying for 400 mb speeds, I get 350-400 close to the router but anywhere a few thick walls and doors away it drops to 100mb, and upstairs it will drop as low as 20-5mb.

    Thanks a bunch!

There is usually a mixture of devices. Currently there is also 8 port Ethernet switch connected to the router to handle connected devices.

Devices: 4 Phones, 3 Laptops PS4 2x TVs Alexa, etc

EDIT: I have done a little more research and using apparently using a router as an access point is a bad idea

So should I instead use the AC86U + buy an access point for the upstairs Ethernet slot?

Help me understand my home's CAT 5 wiring

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:03 PM PDT

I've just moved into a home that is (mostly) prewired with Cat 5. I've got half of it figured out - I have three working ethernet drops (kitchen, living room, master bedroom) that start in the basement (point to point runs). I have a wireless modem in the kitchen and a switch in the basement to tie everything together and this seems to be working fine.

This is the part that I need clarification on. The two spare bedrooms also have Cat 5 cabling and ethernet ports (all 8 wires connected to the jack). Each room has two cables and two jacks. I also have two jacks in the kitchen marked TELE and DSL, but this is actually just one cable that has two wires to each jack and the other 4 unused. Then there is a patch panel in the basement, but I think this is just for the ordinary phone jacks?

My goal is to have ethernet in the two spare bedrooms. Can someone help me understand where to start? I think I'm dealing with a situation similar to the one described here, but I'd like to be a bit more certain before I start pulling apart my patch panel.

Help with Server not picking up IP address.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 06:11 PM PDT

Hello fellow Networking humans of Reddit..

I recently switched to a new ISP and on my router screen(My router has a small touchscreen) it gives me the WAN IP and the router IP. So, the WAN IP is the public one assigned by the ISP (173.x.xx.xx) and the router IP is my Private Local area IP (192.xxx.x.x) I have a home server set up for hosting Virtual Machines to play around with and break stuff. My issue is I cannot hit the IP address that it was. Which makes since because I have switched providers. So, I assigned a new static IP in the scheme of what my router IP says currently and I still cannot hit the server to get logged in.

Am I missing something? I am not an network expert in the slightest, but I feel that I am overlooking something simple and not thinking about it enough.

Edit: solved: I reset my settings on the ESXI server back to default and let it pull a DHCP address, Then assigned a new one.

Any suggestion for wifi mesh that will be hard wired together with Ethernet? I have fios 1gbps

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 05:40 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I have fios 1gbps connection, and unfortunately i am cringing every moment of having the fios router as my primary router, but we TV and i don't want to be to go guy if we lose internet.

Since the primary wifi on the g1100 sucks, I wanted a mesh network in my house. Its relatively large but has concrete and rockwool in the walls so it can be sensitive to the closest access point, and hand offs are terrible. we are doing a big reno and i want to run the cat6 cable in the house before we close up the ceilings.

sorry if this has been asked a bunch of times, but as far as i can tell most posts i see are for nodes that are connected over wifi, since I am going to hard. I've always loved the asus firmware, and have plenty of experience with the ac1900. I was thinking of just putting 3 of them in mesh mode (one for each floor and one for outside the house) and seeing where that goes. but i figure I'd post here if there is anything new that i should look out for. since multiple people will pay I don't mind putting out a little bit of money if it works.

    thanks in advanced.

    WiFi setup.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 05:37 PM PDT

Hey guys I'm a college student who just moved in to a house for the first time. I called WOW internet to try to get my wifi setup but they told me they had to send a technician to my house to activate something on a box or pole. Is this really necessary? How can they not do this remotely when I already have the proper cords going in to the house?

Can’t use IPv6 with Netgear MR1100 connected to Netgear AC1750

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 04:51 PM PDT

I have a brand new Netgear Nighthawk M1 MR1100 and Nighthawk R6700v3. I've enabled IP Passthrough and disabled DHCP on the MR1100. On the R6700v3, I used autoconfig for the IPv6 settings. The router shows an IPv6 address on the WAN side but no IPv6 on the LAN. I also know for a fact that I get IPv6 from my ISP because I've used the MR1100 with a plain Jane AP and by itself, and have been able to get IPv6 on all my connected devices. I'd like to use the R6700v3 as the primary router because of the extra features I get compared to the MR100. Thanks in advance for any help!

Recommendation for reliable home setup for many devices that preserves decent speed

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 04:02 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

We have a 1650 square foot, one story house, and pay for 500 mbps internet at our house; however, we have wifi deadzones, and the internet cuts out a good bit. Some of this is possibly/likely due to the number of devices (2-4 phones, 2-4 tablets, 2 xboxes, 2 tvs, a couple of computers, etc.) all running at any one time. Most of these are streaming music, videos, games, etc.

I need to outfit my home with something that can handle all of this without major hiccups. Internet comes in through a coax cable, and i want everything inside the house to be mine from that point on (I currently rent a router and extender from the company).

I don't currently have ethernet in the house, but could wire it if I needed to. I am hoping to come up with a solid solution for $400 or less, but I am not sure if that is realistic or not.

I was looking at Google wifi vs eeros, but saw where some people are recommending using Ubiquiti APs and network boxes. Most of these are in reference to a larger house than mine, so I don't know what I would need, or if I even need it, but the idea of a more commercial level solution is definitely appealing to me. I don't need the fanciest thing ever, but reliability in supporting this many devices while preserving the speed to each is my main concern (don't want lag in webinars, kids, games, etc. or dropping wifi).

Could someone provide a recommendation for which of these (or other) options may work best longer term, and a list of what I might need? I would be doing the work myself (with the help of Youtube), and would appreciate any recommendations on the most cost effective places to get the parts I need as well. Also, please Explain Like I am 5 for anything touchy, I want to be sure I get it all.

    THANK YOU!!!

Better alternative to Chrome remote desktop?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 09:47 AM PDT

When it wants to work it works perfect but I continually run into problems of the screen size changing back and forth from big to small making it useless, mouse is misaligned, and other issues.

All I normally do is log into my windows HTPC to organize files or my windows home desktop to do something really quick. Nothing intensive ever.

    Unable to Login

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:15 PM PDT

Just set up a Wise Tiger router (WT-RT8501) with an Arris SBG6580 modem. Wifi works great, but I'm having difficulty logging in so I can lock my wifi. The default password is "admin", but no default username is given. I've tried many common default usernames, including leaving it blank. I also referred to Wise Tiger Default Router Settings which didn't work either. Even after resetting the router multiple times, nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    WiFi extension

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:05 PM PDT

I live very close to an AT&T store. I get good signal and download speed at my window, but not farther into my apartment.

Is there a way to capture this WiFi signal with a device (WiFi extender/booster, etc.) and broadcast it throughout my apartment so the strength is good farther into my apartment?

I obviously wouldn't have access to the original modem/router, so I wouldn't be able to pair manually of course. Thanks.

Setting up own personal cloud storage and routers that offer this capability built in

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 11:16 AM PDT

I've noticed consumer routers from companies like Netgear have the capability to act as a network storage device, even across the internet if configured. Provided you plug in a drive to its USB port.

Is there any reason not to use this over configuring something from scratch? Bad security? Poor performance? Ideally I'd just stick movies on it and use it for that. I'm aware the options are limited to the firmware so it's probably not as customizable. But is this a pretty good "just works" solution?

I've looked into it some and can't say I've found anything really against it.

    Spectrum/Ubee Modem Issues

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:46 PM PDT

It is an Ubee Modem. I've had it for a little while now, and it's had two wireless networks for it the entire time. Suddenly about a week ago, one of the networks disappeared. After some trouble shooting with spectrum, we discovered that the primary network had been disabled somehow. I have since re-enabled it, and reset it. However, this did not resolve the issue. Spectrum's ability to help ended there, however, I emailed Ubee and I have been awaiting a response. But I thought I'd see if I could receive help ahead of time as well.

    Thank you in advance.

Gigabit speeds to primary PC, but not laptop. Both wired, both cat5e, both gigabit ports, both 1000 Full Duplex. RT-AC1900p.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 10:56 AM PDT

    Hello!

As the title states, I have gigabit internet (Telus, BC, Canada) and my speeds are as expected to my primary PC (~950 up/down), however on my laptop I'm only getting anywhere from 250-400 up/down.

Both of these connections are wired running through an RT-AC1900p (merlin installed), and from what I can tell have identical connections:

    • Both are on gigabit ports.
    • Both are using cat5e cables.
    • Both have 1000 Full Duplex link state.

My laptop is gigabit capable, verified from specs and through network settings - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.

QoS is disable. Nothing is currently eating up bandwidth (primary PC is shut off, remotely connected to laptop).

Right now I'm solely using the laptop as an interim Plex server host connected to my NAS while I wait for parts on a mini ITX build. Not a major issue, but something I would like to understand if possible.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

    Powerline Ethernet?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 08:36 AM PDT

My PC currently uses a WiFi adapter to receive a signal. This is mainly used for gaming, and for that, it works.

However, as the router is across the house and as such I receive lower speeds than most other areas. I also have an issue with the adapter (as it is USB based) where it may take up to 5 minutes to connect to the network after booting up my pc.

It is not realistic to run a cable. Could Powerline Ethernet improve the (admittedly minor) issues?

Is there anyway I can transfer my Frontier Cable Router/Modem logs? The web interface for 192.168.1.1 will show them to me, but the record length is too long for the screen and the wrap-around makes it hard to read. SSHing to the address is denied. Are there apps for this?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:25 PM PDT

It seems that there are several logs on the router, but they're hard to read. They're not only comprised of different types of records with different record lengths, but the lengths exceed the width of the monitor, so the wrap-around destroys any attempt to maintain "columns". I'd like to read these files in something more forgiving, like Excel. Any ideas for how to do this?

W/ Gigabit Internet: Speeds of <300 down and >750 up - ONLY IN WINDOWS?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 01:57 PM PDT

I have AT&T fiber and am getting really weird speeds when I test. I get usually close to 800 up, but almost never even 300 down. This is on a wired PC. I have tried multiple windows PCs on different ports of my router with the same results. Interestingly, when I used the SAME PC, but booted into UNIX (Fedora) or a Mac, I was able to get close to 900/900.

The affected PC's included ones from HP, Lenovo, and Dell. Each of the NICs have been updated to the most recent drivers.

Can anyone help me explain the problem or help to solove?

    Cable networking

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 01:22 PM PDT

I'm having issues with my new home. There are phone jacks in every room, I checked if Ethernet cables could plug in but they are too big for the jacks.

There are four cable wires in the house, two upstairs and two downstairs. I connected one of them to my modem and router. So I have WiFi, but due to location it means that nothing else can be hardwired. I have a few things (video relay service) that require being hardwired.

How can I utilize the other 3 coax cables to be able to hardwire stuff? I have Comcast internet.

    Extending wifi connection

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 09:30 AM PDT

Recently upgraded to 1 gbps on Fios and the router is on the first floor but one of the rooms is on the second and on the other side of the house. Looking for a way to extend the signal to that room and I've see that wifi extenders are no good. So I am looking for something that will give me better connection, has ethernet, nothing too pricy (~100 USD or more if I have to) and can support 5 Ghz.

    Thanks
