Help. Trying to wire my house with cat6. Posted: 14 Aug 2019 02:32 PM PDT Update. All is good. Solid cables = keystone Jack. I need a shower ... Thanks everyone! Alright. New here and desperate. Been running cable all day through the house (250ft). My back really hurts. Finally done splicing and crimping 6 connectors. Then redid two of them. No Jacks, just the RJ45 connectors. None of my 3 cables work... I have tripple checked that I wired them correctly....what might have I done wrong? [link] [comments] |
what software could be used to see when the network disconnects? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 03:29 PM PDT if the isp is dynamic (meaning it changes isp addresses)
what software could be used to see when the network/isp disconnects, and then reconnects after it changes it the ip address? network is regular isp company (for home networking) the moderm is always active/online [link] [comments] |
How to expand Wifi coverage for non-tech savvy people? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 06:38 PM PDT Hi everyone! I'm trying to help my parents with the Wifi coverage in their house, which is about 3900 sq ft, 2 floors, and is L shaped. They have dead zones in the two ends of the L basically. I've looked into a few options about how to expand their coverage, including mesh networks, but I was hoping that someone might be able to point me in the direction of what might be best for people with almost no technical experience at all. My parents can barely operate their smartphones, so I'd ideally like to have an option that will require the least amount of intervention for them. I thought the Linksy Velop looked like a good choice, but I wasn't sure if it might be confusing for them if it went down for some reason. Thanks so much for all your help! [link] [comments] |

Dumb question from noob. Subnets and DNS Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:51 PM PDT Should each subnet of a LAN have its own DNS (if hosted internally) ie pihole. My current set up is that I have 2 piholes running my Lan with ~ 75 devices, where only about 60% are on or in use at any given time and less than 10 wired devices. I'm trying to move my cameras to their own subnet but I also want to keep them quiet as well. Is it possible to use the DNS on my LAN or should I make a new pihole like service to run as a dedicated DNS? Honestly I have no idea. I tried wrapping my head around VLANs and how that would work but I can't figure it out for the life of me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, in advance. Is it possible to use my current piholes [link] [comments] |
AT&T Fiber setup: Can I go Arris > Switch > Router > Everything Else? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:46 PM PDT The title is the TL;DR. Here's my situation. New house with AT&T Fiber. The ONT and Arris RG are in a smart home box the builder placed in the laundry room. Ethernet running to six other locations (plus coax) terminates in that box. I'd like to put an unmanaged switch with POE capabilities in the Smart Home box. (POE needed because two of those Cat 6 lines are for ceiling mount AP's). But space is tight in the box and I don't think I can fit my router AND a big switch. Plus I'd like the router in another location for better WiFi coverage. (I've not purchased the AP's yet and may only get one AP if the router can be better positioned). The Router is directly connected to the Arris RG now with the RG in IP Passthrough. Everything else is using the Linksys router. I want to keep it this way and avoid using the crappy Arris box as much as possible. I tried connecting a simple Netgear switch to the RG and then connecting the Linksys router to that switch. It worked but everything else I plugged into the switch in turn connected to the Arris. So, my Apple TV, Xbox and other Ethernet devices were not on the same LAN as my wireless devices. Is there a way to force those other devices to connect to the Linksys router instead? Do I need a managed switch to do this? Need to tweak settings on the Arris RG? [link] [comments] |
Intermittent high packet latency on CenturyLink DSL Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:11 PM PDT For the past few months, my home connection has been suffering from intermittent bursts of high packet latency. I first noticed the issue when I was watching streams on Twitch that would periodically pause before restarting. As part of my troubleshooting I tried running a ping while the issue was happening and I noticed abnormally high ping times. This made me try running continuous pings against several popular DNS servers, as well as my modem's internal IP. Normally, my ping is around 40-80ms, occasionally bursting up to 160-200ms for a packet or two. For the duration of these periods, my ping to external IPs will increase dramatically, averaging around 1000-1800ms for around 30 seconds. However on occasion, the high latency will last several minutes. During these periods, my ping to local devices, including my modem, will remain consistently low. If I preform a traceroute during high latency, the latency appears of originate somewhere between when the trace hits my modem and when it hits the router in CenturyLink's office. My DSL connection is using VDSL2 Bonding, and on one of the channels, it reports occasional RS FEC Corrections, which I believe stand for received forward error correcting code corrections. I am using a CenturyLink provided ZyXEL C2100Z modem. [link] [comments] |
New router and modem, playstation won't connect but phone will Posted: 14 Aug 2019 02:41 PM PDT We got a new router and modem so we could pay a little less for our internet. We have it all set up, and it works like a charm. However, mine and my roommate's Playstation 4s will simply not connect to the internet. When I try connecting to the wifi from either system, we get a CE-37813-2 error code. When I tried connecting to a game which uses a few online features, even in singleplayer, I get a NW-31194-8 error code. I am not that network-savvy, so I don't know much about proxy servers or anything, so i used "simple wifi setup" when setting up my Playstation's wifi. I posted here because it seemed like more of a network problem rather than a playstation problem. It could be the settings on the playstation, but after spending hours researching solutions, I have came to no conclusion. [link] [comments] |
Use WiFi extender as reverse AP? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 05:46 PM PDT Trying to get wifi to my Desktop, but it has an extremely weak signal. Don't want to use a WiFi extender for the bandwidth issues they create. So I bought one ( a TP-Link RE305), and I am using it with a wired eth cable from my Desktop to the extender. The extender then connects to the router on the other side of the house using Wifi. I notice the extender has an AP mode, but that is for when you plug the eth cable from the router to the extender, not the way I do it. I have looked in the settings, and there is no way to turn off both 2.4 and 5 radios for extender. Do any exist where you can do this? ie Connect using Wifi as a back-haul to router, then only use a wired connection. This seems like it would be the best solution for me, but if anyone knows of a better solution that is not impossible (eg running cat5 all the way across house), that would be cool too :) [link] [comments] |
ASUS router RT AC68U - dropping signal over time Posted: 14 Aug 2019 05:22 PM PDT I have 2 of these set up in my house, to create a very big network. The main one is connected to the modem. Ethernet cable is ran through the wall to the 2nd router location which is set up as an add on. This was a great system, but we have noticed over time (over the last year or so), signal strength is dropping all over the house. Two bedrooms barely get signal. They used to get better signal, even though they were far away. And other spots in the house the signal isnt as strong as it used to be. Do routers loose quality over time? Is there something I should be doing to them? [link] [comments] |
Issues with stuttering video via wifi through many walls Posted: 14 Aug 2019 05:17 PM PDT My mother recently told me she is having issues with stuttering while watching shows using the Spectrum app on her roku in one room of my parent's house. Their router and modem are in the living room of the main part of the house and about 75 feet away from the roku-enabled tv. The room she is trying to watch from is a bedroom, inside of an in-law apartment on the other side of the in-law bathroom and on the other side of a wall that used to be the outside wall, if that makes a difference. I have a feeling all of the walls the wifi signal has to go through is the issue. However, a speed test standing next to her tv results in 29.4 Mbps down (they pay for 30) while standing right over the router results in 36 Mbps down. From what I can tell, she should have enough speed to stream 1080p video when she is the only one home. I told my father that he would need to buy a booster or enhancer to get a strong signal that far away and through that many walls. I'm not sure what he should buy since the research I have done indicates that boosters, repeaters and extenders exist. What should I have them buy? FWIW: The tv and roku were brand new within the last few months and they don't have any issues with streaming on their roku-enabled tv in their bedroom, which is right off of the living room where the router is. Help Setting Up Own Private Dorm Network Posted: 14 Aug 2019 04:42 PM PDT Hi everyone, This is my first post on this subreddit so I'm sorry if I don't get everything right. I'm at university right now and currently trying to set my room up with smart devices. My university has two wifi's, a WPA2-Enterprise one that requires a school email and password, and an non-WPA2-Enterprise one that requires you to register the MAC address of up to 4 devices for devices that can't "log in". The problem is, this is finicky and often doesn't work even when registering the addresses. The school policy does not prohibit this. Therefore, I wanted to circumvent this and use a router to create my own access point so I could avoid the hassle and connect as many devices as I want. Firstly, would this be possible? Secondly, how would I go about doing it? I spotted this article about using an ethernet connection, but they disabled all the room ports so I could only do wifi based stuff. Any suggestion or advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Connecting to slightly too far public Wifi? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 04:39 PM PDT Hello, I live near a few different public wifis and I'm hoping to connect to one for my internet needs at home after my internet bill has doubled this month. The closest public wifi is practically across the street diagonally from my window, although there is the roof of a building in between me and the signal. If I'm in the corner of my apartment closest to the signal I can sometimes see the SSID pop up on my laptop. There's also a Starbucks less than a block away. I went ahead and already bought a cheap yagi antenna as well another kind of antenna (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZ7B46A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-GivDb90H9A77), both with RP-SMA connectors. However, I have had very limited success connecting on the networking hardware I have. On a TP-Link access point I have not been able to see the SSID when I try to use it in the Bridge with AP mode, but I can see it when I scan in Repeater mode. On a travel router I have I opened it up and used an adapter to connect the antenna straight to the circuit board, however I believe this is for the 5ghz band. I was able to connect sometimes after aiming the antenna, but the connection would be pretty slow at times and eventually drop off. I'm planning to buy a different travel router with external antennas and taking one off so I can properly attach the antenna to the 2.4 GHz band (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K6MHRJI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_lvjvDbVA1BYB2). But, I don't really understand the best way to do this. I saw some YouTube videos of RVers using the ubiquiti bullet m2 with omnidirectional antennas, but I don't fully understand if I need this for my situation. Will the router I linked work or is there anything else I'm doing wrong? Any better hardware recommendations that don't break the bank? Any other tips for setting up a personal network connected to public wifi? If possible I'd like for all my devices connected to my router to show up on their end as one device. Thanks for reading my messy post and apologies about any incorrect terminology used! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Aug 2019 04:10 PM PDT I have a windows 10 "server" which is running a couple of containers and 2 pi's running pihole. I have remote access to the "server" using Chrome Remote Desktop and I also have PiVPN available to remotely access my network. I am currently wondering what are the other remote access methods? I'd ideally like to use something that avoid any port forwarding or even doesn't require anything installed. Perhaps something similar to SSL VPN like you'd get with some enterprise firewalls from Sonicwall or Fortinet. If i'm doing something which can't really be improved on then that's cool i'm just opening up a discussion to make sure i've not missed anything! :) Thank you for any input in advance :) [link] [comments] |
"Connected, no internet" shows up every few months. My modem or xfinity cable? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 02:15 PM PDT Connected no internet where i cant access any website. Occasionally the signal drops completely and I cannot connect to wifi at all. It resolves itself and usually goes away after a few hours/days. Linksys cm3008 modem and ea6400 router. I was thinking its my modem/router but because this only shows up infrequently and for a few days at a time, I am doubtful. I spoke with xfinity and they say the connection from them to the modem is strong. Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Connectivity in exterior building, 60-80' from main structure? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:52 PM PDT I'm moving into a new home and preparing to set up my office. I'm trying to decide whether I want to be crammed into the 10x10 spare room, or run power to the shed (AC...) and set up out there. The thing is, currently the modem/router is in that spare room, about 80' from the shed (2 interior walls, brick exterior), but I might be able to move it to the living room (60' from shed, still brick exterior). What would be the best way to get connectivity out there, if I did? [link] [comments] |
Splitting Cat-5 connection help Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:41 PM PDT I had someone wire a cat-5 port, 2 floors up into my PC/Game room and I'm looking for something to split that connection into more than just that one port. I recently bought a TP-Link 5 Port Gigabit desktop switch, and no matter what I try, I can't seem to figure out how to get the connection split into 2. Both systems just show no connection. Is there any device I should be using instead? Any help would be appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Aug 2019 04:53 AM PDT What do y'all run for a IPAM/DHCP server? Would like something that runs in conjunction with FreeIPA (handing DNS) and easily configureable for multiple subnets/vlans. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a Cat6 keystone jack that accepts 32 AWG wire Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:34 PM PDT I bought super flat Cat6 cable and routed it through the wall. I didn't realize until I went to terminate it that it contains 32 AWG wires, and the monoprice keystone jacks I have only accept thicker 22-26 AWG wires. Try as I might I couldn't get a reliable connection punching down the the thinner wire as the termination point doesn't cut through the thin wire's sheath and make contact. Does anyone know where I might be able to find Cat6 punch down keystone jacks that are designed for 32 AWG wire? Google has so far failed me. [link] [comments] |
Question about Cisco L3 switch and Google Wifi Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:27 PM PDT I have a homelab environment that I want to keep 100% separate from anything in the house. I've been using a basic Dell switch and Google Wifi, but recently purchased a Cisco L3 switch that does VLANs, etc. My question is - does it make sense, and can I achieve the "independence" I am looking for by setting it up this way? Or is there some gotcha I am not seeing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:26 PM PDT Hey folks, I'm in a many-device household with Xfinity for Internet. Between all of our phones, smart TVs, printers, laptops, and PCs, mostly everything is stable and performing fine. Except for one thing: I have a Windows 10 machine that is my "main" PC. It has a wireless connection to the network, via an 802.11n wireless card. For some reason, this computer suffers from periodic disconnects from the network. I'll just be doing normal surfing or something like that, and POOF my connection will be gone. Sometimes everything will just kind of hang for a few minutes, and sometimes I'll get socket disconnect errors. Normally this problem goes away in a few minutes, but it's super irritating. It's especially fussy when I try to print to our wireless printer. It FREQUENTLY disconnects when I try to do that (it's an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978). Some notes:
Anyone have any suggestions for how to troubleshoot this, or what I could do? Is there a chance things could improve if I just grab a new wireless card? I hate to spend the money on a new card if it's not going to help, though. Hard wiring is not an option at this time. Suggestions welcomed! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Help Connecting to an Office Computer from Home Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:11 PM PDT I am paid on salary so I do my 8 hours/day and would prefer to go home to finish any remaining work I have for the day. Normally I would just use TeamViewer, but company policy says we can't have programs like that on our machines. I've done a little bit of research and the only thing I can find that might help is using a remote access point to access my company network. I came to ask if that's something I would be able to set up on my own. My network/IT manager said if I found a way to connect he wouldn't stop me, but he won't help me do anything because he wouldn't want to get in any trouble himself. So is it possible to set up a remote access point without any kind of administrative access to the network? Do you have a different/better solution? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Would getting a separate router for my pc help with online gaming? Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:05 PM PDT So right now we just have the router that Comcast provides. Its the new xfi router/modem combo. I currently have it in my room since I am the only one who uses a hardwire connection, but the problem is the wifi signal is not very strong in certain parts of the house because of where it is at. My connection in general is also not the best even though we have the second highest internet plan comcast provides (comcast sucks). If I got a separate router, one that is supposed to be better for online gaming, could I just use that router down in my room just so I can connect it to ethernet and then put the Comcast router back upstairs for everyone else? Or is that not how it works? [link] [comments] |
Bypass work VPN for specific websites? (pfSense) Posted: 14 Aug 2019 12:56 PM PDT I run pfSense at home and have to use FortiClient VPN to remote into work. They block pretty much any streaming music or video service out there (only on VPN, not at the building) to presumably save bandwidth. Is there a way I can bypass this VPN for specific sites (YouTube, Google Play Music)? [link] [comments] |
