    Backup that saves programs?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:09 PM PDT

Hey y'all. I have a weird situation. I set up a RAID 0 for my windows installation, and I'm realizing it wasn't the best idea.

    Here's my current situation:

    250 GB m.2 + 500 m.2 in RAID 0

1 TB SATA SSD + 1TB SATA SSD in RAID 0

    2TB HDD

I'm planning on doing away with all the current SSDs (keeping the m.2 ones for spares and returning the SATA ones)

I'm planning on replacing them with two 1TB m.2 SSDs left as two separate disk entities. I want to know how to get my current system over to one of those SSDs without doing a clean install. I have no idea how to do this. My understanding is that windows backup only saves files, not programs, and that there isn't a way to use a system restore on a new drive a la apple's time machine.

Is it safe to download the Windows 10 update 1903?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:03 PM PDT

I've heard some people couldn't log in after updating and that Windows was trying to fix the problem. My PC is starting to pester me about it now. Does anyone know if they successfully fixed it and if it's safe to download?

(While on the subject, how do I just make Windows stop bringing up updates? It's annoying and my main problem with Windows.)

can i change where the start menu is on the task bar?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:14 PM PDT

i have my task bar on the left side of my second monitor, this makes it so the start menu and icons start from the top. i am wondering if i can change this making the start menu in the bottom left while still having the task bar along the left side of the monitor, is this possible or is the location of the start menu locked?

i cant think of a better way of wording this so apologies if it doesn't make perfect sense.

    Getting Technical Issues In Chrome?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:24 PM PDT

Hi, I'm having issues with some websites in Chrome and I was hoping someone could help me. Whenever I go to Youtube or Google it freezes on this screen https://postimg.cc/9wtzc85Y

Hotmail and any of the Microsoft sites freeze on a white screen too and some websites like Facebook aren't loading fully. If Someone could figure out a solution for me I'd be grateful, thanks.

Volume and Network icons not showing up in taskbar [Windows 10 Education]

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:42 PM PDT

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Education from Windows 7 Pro. In both OS's the volume and network icons were missing from the taskbar on startup, but in windows 7 restarting the explorer solved the issue. However, this doesn't work in Windows 10. I have tried registry editing, group policy editing, updating drivers etc., but nothing has worked. They are grayed out in settings and I cannot choose to turn them on, although it says they are on anyway.

Can't login to PC. How do I wipe it but retain the Windows 10 product key?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT

Long story short -- I formatted a PC and created the local admin account except ... the password I set doesn't work. I don't know if I fat fingered it or caps lock was on or what but I can't log into it.

There's no data on it, so I want to wipe and start over. Normally I would make a recovery thumb drive but, like I said, I can't log onto the PC to create one. The Windows 7 key is on the sticker on the side of the box but this machine did the free upgrade to Windows 10 so I'm assuming that key is meaningless now?

    Options?

Basic And Effective Windows 10 Security Steps

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:25 PM PDT

I've been asked to help set up a friend's new laptop with Windows 10 Pro but I haven't run Windows since the Windows 8.1 days. Back then, I used to do the following basic steps:

    • have Windows Update running and applying updates
    • have Windows Defender running and applying updates
    • set UAC up to max (UAC never bothered me but some people hate it)
    • create an unprivledged user account for normal use
    • set Windows to show file extensions
    • install a better web browser (Firefox or Chrome)

Do these basic steps still apply in the age of Windows 10? Is there any other low hanging fruit that could be applied?

    Thanks in advance!!!

Cannot login after Windows 10 upgrade

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:27 AM PDT

I recently upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7, and now I cannot login to my desktop at all. Everytime I put my password in, it begins to login, and then the screen goes black and it boots me back to the login page. This is incredibly frustrating as it is the only computer I have and I need it for school and work.

    Windows Activation Question

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:19 AM PDT

    Hi there,

My copy of windows seems to have encountered an activation issue. I've had the same key for years, and upgraded to windows 10 from 7 - however the activate windows watermark is appearing and it seems my key is no longer activatable.

I bought a new key on ebay for cheap, however they said it only works if I reinstall windows with this new key.

does buying a copy of windows from microsoft allow me to just enter the key and activate? I'd rather not reinstall windows if i can help it.

    thank you!

HDR Video Player for Windows 10?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 10:07 PM PDT

I have tried PMP, VLC, MPV, MPC-HC, MPC-BE, and even the Windows Movies & TV app. All of them seem to want to transcode HDR into SDR (whether I have HDR enabled in Windows or not). Is there any video player that actually plays HDR content on an HDR display without tone mapping?

Windows 10 - deleting some update rather than freeing disk space, cause the opposite.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 10:30 AM PDT

I know it's a bad thing, it wasn't me who did it anyway. Now i'm interested what exactly happened and what to do.

So, that other person deleted some update(i don't know which exactly, neither does he), he said he does it sometimes to free up disk space, this time - opposite happened, after deleting update his free disk space lessened by 3gb.

Any suggestion as to how this happened? What to do with it?

I guess re-applying updates is a suggestion to consider.

I'll try disk cleanup tool to see how much can be freed.

Windows key + Shift + S not producing a rectangle for snipping

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 10:26 AM PDT

Hello, for those out of the loop, pressing windows key + shift + esc would produce a rectangle that would save whatever was in its area, or at least so it was before the latest update, where it's now a freeform select tool, however I would like to have the rectangle instead, is there anyway to revert the change? Thanks

Locking the sound volume in Windows 7.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 10:19 AM PDT

Sorry for the stupid question for help... but stupid problems require stupid questions to be asked :/

I'm looking for a way to lock the volume in Windows 7, so it can't be changed. The reason for this is because of my Logitech G510s keyboard.

This keyboard has a scroller to adjust the volume of Windows, but the damn scroller is broken. Because of this, whenever you touch the scroller even the slightest, it'll keep messing with the volume for atleast a few hours. The volume can go all the way to 0, and back up to 100 in a few seconds.

This obviously dives me bonkers. I already tried contacting Logitech, if there's a way to stop the scroller from working through their software, but to no one's surprise they just tell me to buy a new keyboard.

Obviously I'm not going to do that, because the rest of the keyboard just works fine. So now I'm looking for a way to see if it's possible to lock the volume in Windows 7, so the damn scroller won't mess with my volume anymore.

Windows on one drive, programs on another ?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 10:29 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So I am currently building a new multimedia workstation and he's allmost finished.

I want to keep everything extreemly organized on this system. What I mean with that is, I want to install every program on an other drive (from windows) in a folder that I've made and everything that is releated to that program (plugins etc) should stay together etc...

So my goal with this is to keep my programs compleetly sepereated from windows because in theory, this will make upgrading my programs drive for example from an 500gb to 1tb so much easear and more efficient just by copying all the programs to another drive then cloning windows etc... And if windows for example gets broken... It will be possible to freshly reinstall windows and get back to work without worrying about reinstalling all the programs, plugins etc... (in theory)

I know that programs have a releason ship with windows so my question is... Is it possible for example to copy windows registry, reinstall windows and import the registry so that windows knows what programms etc are installed on the system?

Windows 8.1 loading circle, then goes black screen and pops a message "your pc ran into a problem

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:42 AM PDT

So I got an issue for a few days from which I bang my head in the wall. As I try to start windows 8.1, the windows logo pops out with the loading circles for a few seconds then everything goes black screen and after 3-4 mins it says "your pc ran into a problem" then restarts and goes to automatic repair infinite loop. The worst part here is that the pc has an issue with booting from usb (yes the usb is bootable in NTFS format). I got 2 usb's, one with windows 8.1 and one with windows 10. When i open up the BIOS and change the order to one of the usb sticks, the pc boots it and shows the windows logo again with the circling dots and then again goes to black screen. I'm sure it boots it because just before the windows logo pops out i see some text at the top left corner which says something like "NTFS.....booting image" or something like that. So I can't access my old windows, can't access cmd, can't install new windows. Now what?

Windows 10 at home froze while I'm at work.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:50 AM PDT

    Hello
I use Windows 10 at home, and at work using google's remote desktop. I leave to head to work, and my computer is fine, but when I got to work earlier this morning, it shows as offline on google remote desktop. I know that I have to change the power settings in order for it to not do that, but I can't force restart it from here because the power button is 1 mile away and down a hill from here. Is there a way I can execute a force restart from my desk here through remote means? I don't have a car, so I can't just walk back and forth just for a restart. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
