Is UPnP actually required for gaming, P2P, etc.? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:15 AM PDT I recently swapped out my ISPs router/modem/WiFi combo box for an Edgerouter X. Now my ISP router (like most do) had UPnP enabled by default, whilst the Edgerouter X doesn't Now I figured that this would cause issues with P2P (torrents for instance) and gaming (we have both an Xbox and Playstation that get used at the same time), but so far I've had no issues whatsoever. Am I just misinformed that UPnP is actually necessary? I have no firewall rules set other than the default ones. I know plenty about networking, but I've never really read into UPnP much, and there seems to be loads of conflicting information about it (mostly gaming forums where people just guess answers). Some people say it opens ports that are blocked in a firewall as necessary, some say it just creates a "temporary port forward". Can someone explain how it works (preferably without also explaining why it's a security risk - I understand that part!)? [link] [comments] |
Which brand to get for Cat 6/7 cables? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:36 PM PDT What are some well known/good reputation brands that I can pick up a Cat 6 or 7 cable? There are so many different ones on Amazon that I read up comments saying "Cheap cables! 250 MHz, not 550 MHz" or "break easily if stepped on" etc... I'm thinking Belkin brand would be good since it's a common name, but I want to hear from you guys. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:44 PM PDT Spending another $155 on a modem after 2 years seems pretty steep. Does anyone know where I can get a decent quality teksavy-approved modem for less? MacBook Pro's speed capped on Orbi WiFi? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:32 PM PDT I have a 2019 MBP that connected at full speed when I used an Apple TC as a router. I recently switched to Orbi, and have noticed that the MBP caps out at <40 Mbps, even though other devices nearby (my Phone, my iMac) connect at nearly 400 Mbps. Any ideas for what might be causing this? It seems location-independent, very much particular to this one device. [link] [comments] |
Question with using a ubnt es-16-xg switch with Bell Fibe 1.5Gbps internet and TV Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:15 AM PDT I have Bell Fibe 1.5Gbs internet service with 1 wired receiver and one wireless receiver. I am looking to keep the Home Hub 3000 so I can run those devices and also run my own router for all the other internet traffic. I've been looking at the ubnt es-16-xg switch as a possible solution. My idea would be to unplug the SFP module from the Home Hub 3000 and plug it into the switch. From the switch plug Ethernet to the wan port on the Home Hub 3000 and another Ethernet cable to the wan port on my router. My question is.....is this doable? If so, is there any configuration that needs to be done on the switch to link the SFP at 2.5Gbs? Can i limit the bandwidth on the port that that Home Hub 3000 plugs into on the switch? AT&T Fiber Arris BGW210 Firewall Woes Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:41 PM PDT So I just switched over to AT&T Fiber from Spectrum and I have a couple Synology Boxes and a Plex Server that I like to connect to from outside the network. I just got an Asus GT-AX11000 as my primary router and for the life of me I cannot get the BGW210 to get into bridge mode so that my Asus Router seems the external IP address. I have changed the modem to IP Passthrough mode and tried to input the IP of the Asus Router as a cascaded router. But I constantly get an error. AT&T forums are not much help, has anyone successfully got this to work? [link] [comments] |
Mysterious Intermittent New-Connection Latency Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:53 PM PDT I recently moved to a new apartment where I have Xfinity (naming in case it's relevant) cable for my ISP. About once every hour or so (sometimes multiple times within an hour, but sometimes I'll go hours without it) new connections seem to fail. E.g. I'll do a Google search (on my hardwired Windows PC), but then try to open a couple of the results in new tabs and they'll just hang on "Connecting..." or "Waiting for...". If I quickly open a new tab and try to go to Google, it also hangs. After hanging for about 10-15 seconds, all the tabs will connect and work fine.
I'm running out of good ideas to try to nail down what's causing this. I would love to be able to reliably reproduce it so I can investigate further, but I haven't found a way to trigger the events. I've made various packet capturing attempts but haven't seen anything super obvious (but also it's tough to catch because I can't trigger the events) Because it seems to affect new connections / the CST tool I'm leaning toward a UDP/DNS sort of thing, but if it was UDP I'd expect it do affect Rocket League and Discord as well. If anyone's seen this before, I'd love to hear about it. I'd also love any ideas or pointers for what sort of data I should be gathering / looking at to try to catch the root cause of these events. Ethernet Backhaul Mesh networking alternatives Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:11 AM PDT I just moved, and my new house has Ethernet wired in almost every room. It has a long layout, so I definitely need more than one access point, probably three. I purchased an Amplifi Instant, but I'm not super happy with it. It doesn't seem to be very configurable, and it doesn't support hardware NAT. I have a Synology NAS, so getting actual gigabit speeds through Ethernet ports is important to me. I would buy the Amplify HD, except it's nodes don't support Ethernet backhaul for whatever reason. I've configured UniFi products at work before, and I thought they were great. I don't want to ceiling mount the APs though. It also starts to get expensive once you buy a USG and then three access points. Anything else on the market I'm overlooking? I really just want a multiple AP solution that supports Ethernet backhaul, actual gigabit speeds through LAN, port forwarding, and preferably a VPN server. [link] [comments] |

Best Mesh/AP Solution Unifi vs Orbi Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:31 PM PDT ok I am leaning toward purchasing a unifi system. I need advice on what to buy. I have Fios 500/500 at the moment but deadspots all over my home (not too big 2500sqft 1 story) My intent is to have full coverage of wifi all over the house as fast as possible however my main concern is not dropping or disconnecting signal (ring cameras wifi switches etc) I have narrowed down my options to orbi or unifi. Side info I do not currently have hard wired ethernet to each area the aps or mesh satellites will be however i have run wire in the home to poe surveillance cameras and plan to add dataports to every room in the home and a server closet over the next year as time/money permit want 24 port managed gigabit switch i found a good affordable unifi solution for this so I am leaning in this direction. Full setup would help. Switch patch panel small network rack mount. I am very technical and can set it al up just want input on what you would buy to have strong wifi in every area of your home knowing it will soon be supplemented by dataports in a few months Was looking at this https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Compact-802-11ac-Enterprise-UAP-NanoHD-US/dp/B07DWW3P6K https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1267263-REG/ubiquiti_networks_us_24_24_port_unifi.html or this orbi at costco [link] [comments] |

Bell HomeHub3000 and Linksys Mesh Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:05 PM PDT Hey everyone, I'm so happy this thread exists! I was hoping someone could help. I have Bell and 2 of the Linksys Velop AC2200. I have the Bell modem in the basement which is connected to my NAS and HomeKit hubs via Ethernet. One of the Bell ports go to the first Velop on the main level. That is hardwired you an AppleTV. The second Velop is upstairs and connects wirelessly. I have had to put the Linksys in bridge mode but was wanting to use the Linksys features in hopes of faster network speeds. Should I buy another Velop node and a switch; leave a Velop connected to the Bell modem and a switch. The switch would connect to the accessories and the second node? Would that work or could there be a better option? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Internet working via Wi-Fi on some devices, wired devices have no internet access Posted: 28 Aug 2019 06:56 PM PDT Here's a fun one that isn't easy to find on Google. I have my own modem acting as my DHCP server, which has my router and PS4 connected to it. The router is in AP mode. This has always worked without a hitch until recently. Now none of my hard-wired devices can access the internet. Only my laptop gets out but only when its connected to the Wi-Fi. Even plugging directly into ports on the router doesn't work. My phone and PS4 cannot connect to the internet via the Wi-Fi. I've switched ports on my modem, swapped to new cables, checked for firmware updates on both devices. I'm pretty sure its something going on with the modem, I just don't know what at this point. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas at all. Thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:36 PM PDT Hello, Anyone know of a SOHO L3 switch that supports PPPoE? Preferably something small like NetGear's GS108E? I'd like to use it with my Centurylink gigabit fiber. It will replace my ZyXEL router and do PPPoE to the ONT, and be the central hub of my hardwired jacks. All in one. I've got separate routers for WiFi coverage around my home that will connect to it too. [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to figure out what is causing such high upload speeds on a specific device? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:31 PM PDT Sorry if this isnt the right sub for this but as of lately my mothers phone will randomly start uploading data for no reason. I checked my routers interface and it says its all HTTP Protocol over TLS SSL. We only have a 7mb DSL internet connection (rural NC literally our only option) so you can only imagine how much chaos this creates. I've force stopped every app on our her phone and it doesnt stop it. We both have the same phones and only hers does this. Is there a way to narrow this down? I have a Zyxel modem router combo that was given to us by the ISP but I bridge it over to a Netgear Nighthawk. Would appreciate any help on this! [link] [comments] |
Best way to get internet to another building with current hardware Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:20 PM PDT I am attempting to bridge/repeat a wireless signal from one house to another. One house has the majority of the devices I want to connect to the internet in it, and the other has just a laptop and a phone. Creating a wired connection between the two routers is not possible. I have two Netgear WNDR3400v3 routers. I just flashed one with FreshTomato. I would prefer not to flash the other one (the one in the house with the most devices) if I do not have to. I would also prefer to be able to use the wireless functionality on both routers after setting up a bridge. The first party firmware on this router does not have wireless repeater/bridge functionality to my knowledge. Fresh tomato has several different modes: AP, AP + WDS, Wireless Client, Wireless Ethernet Bridge, and WDS. Without flashing the "main" router as well I think this means my only option is set up the flashed router in Wireless Client (i.e., bridge(?)) mode. But I think this also means that I won't be able to use either of the two wireless bands on the "client" router. I am a bit confused by all of this. Is this summary incorrect? Could anyone suggest a method for achieving what I want if it's possible. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. [link] [comments] |
Help with adding an access point Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:30 PM PDT Hi all! I want to add another router to my home, the current Xfinity-provided one is on one end of the house and one floor down. We want to improve the signal at the opposite end and one floor up from the current router. My question is, can I buy a third party router and connect it to the coaxial cable that's used for the set top box in the room that I need it in? Will that create the same 2.4 and 5Ghz signals in that part of the house? Any information would be appreciated, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Help please... 2 buildings, 1 network Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:18 PM PDT I am trying to figure out how best to have 1 network for 2 buildings; I want to cover a house and a nearby garage. There is fiber internet going to the garage from the pole, and there is Ethernet through a conduit to the house. I want good WiFi coverage in both locations and I would like it to be just the one network. Should I be looking at a mesh system? I would expect the house alone will need more than just one router to cover it. I don't have any experience at all setting something like this up. Please help. [link] [comments] |
IPTV and telephone help please Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:40 PM PDT Would something like this work without any issues? I don't want to put my router behind my ISP router because their router is slower and I really need IPTV and telephone which can only be done with their router. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:41 PM PDT I'm setting up my first VLAN at home on my aging HP ProCurve 2810-24G. I have experience configuring Cisco nexus switches, and the CLI syntax for the ProCurve is very familiar to me. I have created the necessary VLAN on the switch, set the untagged ports, and setup Manual IP configuration for the VLAN. I'm now wondering about how to properly get devices setup on this VLAN. How do I get devices that connect to these untagged VLAN ports to just grab the IP configuration without DHCP? Does the switch hand out IP's? I'm thinking that's not the case, and that I will just have to set up each device with manual IP settings to match. However, if this is the case, I don't know how to setup my cheapy home automation lights with manual IP settings. Is it something on the router I need to set so it can delineate what packets are coming from the VLAN ID? Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:42 AM PDT Hello, i have a Windows Server 2012 in network 192.168.1.0 that i set up a VPN PPTP server with Fowarding and Remote Access guide. In the other delegation i am trying to set up a Asus Router AC51U to VPN client because i have one computer and two machines i need to conect to VPN, with the folowing simptoms: I can ping server address (192.168.1.50) from client computer but cant get internet access or cant i access or ping clients from server (this is the main need). If i make a direct VPN conection from the client computer i have internet and server access, and also can ping computer from server so i am sure that must be something about different IP networks and routes from Asus router on client side. Any lights ? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Aug 2019 12:18 PM PDT I'd like to avoid spending too much here, and I don't care much about fancy features, as the main router can handle them. I'm really only looking for a gigabit ethernet port, and dual band 2.4/5 GHz. And of course the ability to act as an AP, and very basic shit like WPA2. n might even be fine, but if an ac model can be had for not a lot more, I'll go with ac. Oh, and I don't want a turd that will crash all the time, or drop connections. [link] [comments] |
