Laptop that will get me through university as an engineering/cs major. ($700-$1000)

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 06:59 PM PDT

    Total Budget/Country of Purchase

    $700 - $1,000 / United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

Best specs. A 2 in 1 form factor would be nice, but not necessary

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important. I want something relatively thin and light since I will be using it for college and carrying it around quite a bit.

    Which OS?

    Windows

    Preferred screen size?

    No preference

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No video or photo editing, but I plan on doing some light/moderate gaming. Minecraft, Overwatch, Indie Games, etc. I will also probably be running matlab and other common college programs for engineers/programmers.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would prefer something with metal chassis and reliable build quality since I hope to use this laptop throughout most/all of university, but a plastic device wouldn't be a total dealbreaker.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am definitely willing to go up to $1100 if there is a significant difference in the device, but $1000 or less is preferred.

Looking for a sub INR60k laptop, prefer ultrabooks.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 04:14 AM PDT

    Total Budget/Country of Purchase

    INR 50k - 65k / India

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

Battery life and newest possible generation hardware. Trying to make stuff last.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important, would be carrying it around a lot.

    Which OS?

    Windows

    Preferred screen size?

    13-14 would be optimal

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

STATA, R Studio, Tableau, Data visualization stuff, apart from the regular browser-based or MS Office stuff.

Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Definitely looking for a decent keyboard, decent build, fingerprint reader, IPS display (screen is important, I watch a lot of stuff on my laptop).

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Prefer anything in the 55-60k range, do not mind going up to 65ish if significant plus. Prefer Lenovo/Dell/HP/Asus. Not familiar with other brands, but do not mind checking them out. Would really really appreciate links to sites to buy, as I'm short of time.

Do most laptops overheat while using it on a not-flat surface? (Dell XPS 13 9380)

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 10:05 PM PDT

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 13 9380 and I have 30 days to return it. One of my biggest issues with it so far is that it gets way too hot when I'm using it in bed and it's just laying on my lap. It heats up when I'm just doing something simple like YouTube. Is it normal for it to do this? It bothers me so much and I'm just wondering if most laptops do this, because if it isn't a common issue across laptops, I'm gonna consider returning my XPS. I've faced other problems with it but the overheating thing is driving me crazy. I was thinking about switching to the Huawei Matebook X Pro 2018. How does that compare to the XPS with this overheating issue?

Light Business/Gaming Laptop for College Freshman

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 11:43 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    $1,500-$2,000 USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Good Battery Life

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Light enough to carry in a backpack

Thinness doesn't really matter to me

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

IDK which screen size is best suits me; I've never owned a laptop

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    Gaming

    MK11, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear, In-Birth

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Preferably around high settings 1080p 60fps

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Finger-print reader, touch screen aren't really necessary

I would like a good keyboard to type essays on

Optical Drive would be cool but not necessary

Good build quality is preferred lol

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Hey all! I'm an incoming college freshman in the market for a business laptop that can handle some light, once-in-a-while gaming. The thing is that I mainly play fighting games; nothing else! So a full-on gaming laptop seemed a bit not worth it to me. Though my main gripe with getting a cheap gaming laptop is its poor battery; I'm hoping for a battery life of around 7+ hours; just something to get through a day browsing the web and doing hw at school. My budget is about $1,500 though $2,000 would be a possible stretch. I was thinking about the Gigabyte Aero 15, but its price and specs seem like a bit overkill for my gaming needs. Otherwise, the great battery life and the slick, black design really appealed to me.

Laptop for admin/photos under £600 UK

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:15 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £600 UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good specifications, will seldom be used on the move or away from mains charger

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? fairly but open to suggestions, I've been told they'd prefer it to be light but still a fast CPU/Ram

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but have a licence already so not an issue if it hasnt got an OS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing, general office and admin tasks like emails, web browsing, excel

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would prefer a good build quality and decent components over new mod cons like finger print readers. SD readers would be a benefit to transfer pictures from SLR to laptop with ease.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Family member has been looking at a HP 14-CK0501 but I feel like there could be better laptops for the price, so thought i'd ask you guys.

Need help finding a reliable and quick productivity laptop that will prerably last 3-4 years $2,000 USD budget

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 09:16 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

I have a budget of $2,000 USD but I'm kind of looking into purchasing a decent monitor with part of my budget as well probably, my country of purchase is the U.S

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Good battery life is important for me, but a good mix of good specs and decent battery life would be great as well, a 2 in 1 form factor is not important to me at all.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

The more mobile it is the better I would say since I would be taking it to class, coffee shops, etc. as long as it isn't extremely heavy I'm fine with it

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Windows or Mac would be fine

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

N/A on screen size, but a high quality screen and refresh rate would be nice

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I would be doing a lot of designing and editing on this machine, music production as well, not a ton of gaming honestly, but if anything probably just a game like Apex Legends or CSGO.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

As long as the games run decently, I'm not looking for the best gaming performance, more productivity.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good input devices, reliable build quality, and a quality screen/monitor.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I'm mostly looking for a really nice productivity machine that will run quickly and reliably for years to come, and I plan on using part of my budget as well to buy an external monitor for when I'm working at home, but of course my main concern is the laptop, so if that takes most of my budget that's fine! Thanks for the help guys

    Laptop for uni

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 11:26 PM PDT

Hello. I got into uni and will be studying programming and thinking about getting a laptop because probably I will need to use it while studying. I have a high-end desktop at home so I don't need super powerful laptop.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 800euros, Lithuania

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be nice but not necessary.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I am planning to carry this thing around in my backpack so the less weight would be nice.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Planning to use it with windows but would not mind it comming with no os at all.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I am thinking something a 13.3 or 14.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Probobly will have to compile some code from time to time.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As i said i have a powerfull pc at home so no need for a strong gpu.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Personally i am thinking about Xiaomi Mi Air | 13.3", i5-8250U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, MX150 2GB. I can get it for 849.00 € but something cheaper would not hurt.

Looking for a laptop suited for Autodesk CAD and Revit

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 08:32 PM PDT

My price range is 1000-1500 $USD. I need something that will consistently perform, not overheat from the 3D rendering, have decent battery life, and good build quality. Also, because I'll be using this with clients, I need it to look nice and professional. I prefer sleek lines, nice screen and sharp resolution...no Alienware spaceships or chunky laptops if at all possible. :) 2-in-1 not needed and honestly would be ok to not fork over extra cash for a touchscreen.

The Microsoft Surface and Spectre 360x caught my eye initially but with all the options out there, I'm overloaded and overwhelmed. Need some direction... I want to make sure I'm making the right investment. thanks!!

Good Specs are a must - would theoretically like to run Borderlands 3 when it comes out plus PC games for the next couple years on medium settings, if possible. Battery life and 2-in-1 are secondary and tertiary things that don't matter to me.

Games played: Borderlands 2 (and 3 when it comes out); Tomb Raider franchise; 7 Days to Die; Skyrim; Elder Scrolls Online; Witcher III; Planet Coaster; along older games like AoE II and Roller Coaster Tycoon. Would prefer something that would run Borderlands 2 & 3 on high or medium settings, and definitely want something that would run 7 Days to Die on high settings. Quite frankly, I've never paid attention to FPS during gameplay but would prefer something that will run smoothly.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Need to have an SD card insert option for camera cards. Reliability absolutely necessary, comfy keyboard for hands a plus, too!

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Basically would be using this for gaming purposes as well as my freelance photography side gig. PC died, and potentially moving this year to a tiny apartment on the East Coast and don't want to lug a giant desktop across states. Thanks in advance for suggestions!!

Need a laptop for college and light gaming

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 05:01 PM PDT

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I don't want it to be too heavy since I'll be caring it around for class
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't know exactly what programs I'm going to be running but I'm major in not in mechanical engineering if that helps
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Krutzpel, Elsword, PUBG and most light game. I want ot to run60 fps on mid settings

Looking for a laptop to replace my 4 year dell Inspiron ($700-$900)

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 07:20 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:$700-$900, USA*

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.I really want a 2 in 1 that I can take to class to write notes on, so pen support is a must. Good battery life is a plus. *

How important is weight and thinness to you?my current laptop is almost 7 lbs, and it's terrible to try and carry around. I would like something lighter than 4 or 5 lbs. *

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows*

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.5 - 14 inches, nothing much larger*

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Super light gaming. I mostly play RuneScape and maybe some smaller indie games. Even then, I don't mind playing on a medium graphic settings, as long as I get the frame rate. *

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? RuneScape, L4D. A playable frame rate, maybe 40 fps?*

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Something that will hold up to the test of time. I tend to be quite hard on my electronics because I use them often. I need something that will withstand some light abuse. Also something with specs that will last a few more years, I'm about to finish my undergraduate and go into my graduate studies. Maybe not as important, but id like something that has between 256 -512 gb SSD, closer to 512 if possible.*

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I've been looking at a Lenovo flex 6 14" with an i5 processor, 512 gb SSD, and 16gb RAM. Ive also been looking at a Dell Inspiron 14 5482 with the same specs. I've been stuck between the two, but I'm open to other suggestions!

    Gaming laptop, USA/Japan, 1,000-1,400USD, ~17.3 inches

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 10:44 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1,000, willing to go a few hundred more for significant performance upgrades, USA but possibly Japan if I was given a good reason to.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, I'd essentially want to be using it as a gaming desktop replacement that isn't as difficult to transport.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably larger, 17.3ish

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, tons of games such as civilization, total war, league of legends, rust, tons of other things, generally nothing extremely demanding

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Many, the most demanding of which would probably be civilization 5/6 and total war, maybe some more demanding ones thrown in. I'm not overly concerned with maxed out settings, I'm pretty much always fine with running games on minimum settings/low as long as they have playable fps and don't melt the cpu.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As long as it runs games with a playable fps and isn't extremely slow I'm not very picky, i'll probably be hooking a mouse up to it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been using a ~6 year old desktop with a gtx 770 and an i7 4770k that runs hot as shit, and I'm looking for a laptop that can run games roughly as well as that for preferably 1300-1400 or less. Is this possible, or are my expectations too high? I've been looking at this: https://www.newegg.com/black-msi-gl-series-gl73-8sd-297-gaming-entertainment/p/N82E16834155231?Item=N82E16834155231 which seems to my uneducated eyes to be satisfactory, are there any glaring problems with this and/or comparable laptops with dramatically higher performance for a modest price increase (few hundred dollars more)? Some component performance comparison websites have led me to believe that this laptop would perform somewhat better than my current desktop, is this true? Either way, a simple laptop suggestion or explanation with these factors taken into consideration would be appreciated.

I'll be moving to Japan soon which is why I'm getting a laptop and not a desktop, are there any issues with the outlets or needing a different charger that anyone is aware of? Would it be prudent to just buy one in Japan, or would that be prohibitively expensive or otherwise undesirable?

Looking for a someway decent casual gaming laptop in the $700-1000 range, USA

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 05:49 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally, I'd like to keep this below $800 or so before tax, but since I'm putting it all on a credit card, technically I could go up to $1000 and still be ok.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm almost always plugged in, so battery life isn't a concern. A 2 in 1 would be neat, since I've been meaning to buy a tablet for myself, but I don't think that's really an option besides the Acer Nitro Spin 5, which I've seen people recommend against because of its i5-8250U processor. The specs are probably my biggest concern.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not an issue. I rarely travel with it, don't usually actually sit with it on my lap, etc.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" preferred, but not a dealbreaker.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I just want to play games like Overwatch (my 2013 Lenovo Ideapad P500 can barely handle it on its lowest settings), do some basic photo editing and vector designing with gimp and inkscape, and watch Netflix, etc. and be able to make out dark scenes. Other than that it's mostly just going to be used for browsing, although I do have a habit of keeping way too many tabs open.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Honestly I just play Overwatch and the old af Mass Effect games right now but I'd probably play more if I had a laptop that could handle it? If Death Stranding gets released for PC I know I'll want to play that. Medium graphics settings would be great considering my low budget lol.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keys are a must because I'm a night owl with poor vision, and I'd very much prefer it if they lit up in some color other than that blinding, cliche gamer red. Longevity would be good, too. I don't want it to need replacement parts or be obselete anytime soon.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was leaning toward the Lenovo Legion Y7000 for $760 on Amazon because of its good graphics and better color than most in my budget, plus it has more ram and white backlit keys. Other considerations were:

    • Lenovo Legion Y530 for $854 on Amazon (doesn't look like a gaming laptop and has i7-8750H instead of i5-8300H like most in my budget, but a 1TB HDD instead of SSD. Not sure if I'll mind not having a SSD though since my old laptop is so sluggish)

    • Acer Nitro 5 for $668 on Amazon (cheap, but an eyesore with red back lighting and a thick bezel, and I've heard its display isn't as good)

    • Dell G3 15 for $870 on newegg (blue backlight, i7-8750H, smaller 128GB SSD, but a 1TB HDD too).

I'm not as familiar with MSI, so I haven't looked into them as much, but I'm definitely open to buying one from them that has similar specs and is in my budget.

I'm super dumb and don't actually know a damn thing about PCs. I'm just going off of what I've read is important when it comes to specs, so I'm having a hard time actually measuring each one's pros and cons against each other. My current laptop is a 2013 Lenovo Ideapad P500 that I got on clearance at Best Buy for college and its been giving me trouble for years, and I think she's finally died for good so I need to make my decision within a few days.

Looking to buy a laptop for school/gaming, 15", USA

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 12:26 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1100 max, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs are most important, battery life a close second.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat, I usually keep my laptop in my backpack so it's not that important. That being said, I don't want something that's super thick.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-16" is my preferred size.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, I play games on the computer. I will be doing some photo editing as well - Photoshop & GIMP mostly.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Fallout 4, Rocket League, Witcher 3, LEGO Star Wars, Skyrim, Clone Hero, maybe older Call of Duty games (Black Ops 1 & 2). Would like to run them smoothly at at least medium settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality & good inputs. More USB ports the better, aux output, Bluetooth , and an HDMI port would be great.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I had an XPS 15 9550 with GTX 960 M that was stolen in May. I'm looking to replace/upgrade from that computer. I'm also using it for school so I need decent battery life to bring it to class during the day and stuff. The XPS15 ended up having a bunch of issues (battery swelling, touchpad broke, some others I can't remember) before it got stolen so I'd like something that's proven to be a good laptop, without any known issues (like the battery swelling on my XPS). I do a lot of MS Office work for school, so something that can process large excel spreadsheets or access databases is good. My old laptop did that just fine so I'm sure your recommendations will as well.

    Thank you!
