College with some light gaming Posted: 18 Aug 2019 11:44 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: I'd prefer not to spend more than 1,000USD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and best specs for the money. How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like it to be 5lbs or less, I walk around campus. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I use photoshop. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of legends at 60fps. Minecraft at 60, and Gamecube emulators at 60. Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a backlit keyboard. The laptop needs to be fairly durable as it'll be used every day. I don't know much about SSD vs HDD, but I would like space to store pictures and music. An ethernet port would be a big plus. HDMI port would also be nice. I need a webcam as well. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm an advertising student in my third year of college, my razer blade (2016) is crapping out on me. I like the style of gaming laptops but not the price. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a ThinkPad for 600~700 Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:15 AM PDT In a month I'll be studying Cs abroad and need a laptop for schoolwork (won't be gaming on it, I'll be investing into a PC later on). I looked through a bunch of brands and I find that ThinkPads are the most appealing for me, what would be the best choice at around 600€? (prefer smaller models) [link] [comments] |
Gaming laptop for university that doesn't look rediculous Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:07 AM PDT I need it to look a bit more professional than most gaming laptops. Whats the cheapest laptop that I can comfortably code Java and C with? Posted: 18 Aug 2019 12:21 PM PDT Everyone recommend a Refurbished think pad. Do you agree or do you have anything else to add. I'm a broke college student to the max. My budget is at most 300$ I have to get through a few coding courses for my degree. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a general laptop with €300 budget Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:04 AM PDT Hi all. I'm looking for a laptop that is not too bulky that I can use as a catch all system. I will be using it in work for documents/emails/etc. but also for music, watching things while travelling and some light gaming. I'm looking for 14 inch ideally but am prepared to go lower (any bigger and it would be too bulky I think) and minimum 4GB ram. If possible I'd like to have the option to upgrade RAM and HD in the future, but it's not a deal breaker. Budget is about €300. [link] [comments] |

Help this man to make a good decision (All-around laptop) Posted: 19 Aug 2019 04:28 AM PDT
500$ used, Venezuela (but buying it in USA,my cousin from Miami will ship it to me).
Battery life and best specs for the money
I'd prefer a light and thin one, but isn't obligatory.
Windows.
13.3 and above (I don't like little laptops)
I'm process engineer, so I do a lot of code, matlab and labview.
It's not my priority, but if i could,I would like to play monster Hunter world (just playable, I'm used to play any game windowed mode in 480p haha).
A GOOD screen with thin bezels (this is my top priority), a good keyboard for coding, and it's possible, all-metal body.
I know 500$ isn't a lot, this is why I need a used laptop to be able to get a better specs PC, and I know too suggesting used laptop isn't easy, but I don't need exact prices, I can wait until I find a good offer (I'm really considering waiting to black Friday, but is a challenge to me 100 days without PC). I really like the surface laptop, especially for his beautiful screen and bezels, but is zero- scares me a lot since I'm Km's away from USA. Another option that I really like is the Huawei matebook D,(I think is the smarter option), the ryzen 5 APU seems to be exactly what I need, the only thing what I don't love from this PC is the superior and inferior screen bezels (it's a foolishness). In conclusion, i don't know if there is a good srceen/reduced bezels ryzen laptop that can work for me. Which laptop do you suggest me? Or do you think i need to wait until black Friday waiting newer laptops and some 20% discount in eBay or so? ( If it is really necessary, I would do it). Thanks you all and sorry for my english!. Graduate school laptop, notetaking+ Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:41 AM PDT **Total budget and country of purchase:** Up to $1300 **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2 in 1 preferred. Best specs. Very important that it last me the rest of grad school (4+ years) **How important is weight and thinness to you?** No more than 4 lbs if possible **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13-15in **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I use some editing/analysis software for lab stuff and game. **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Mostly play FFXIV: ARR and World of Warcraft but happy to run them at lowest settings as needed. **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Always prefer a numpad but not required. **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Basically what I want is something with good pen support so I can take handwritten notes while still being useful for some moderate gaming ability if I'm out of town, away from my desktop. The handwritten notes ability is the most important feature though. I was most interested in the ASUS Zenbook flip 14 but am worried about some poor reviews with the Pen support. Would love to hear if any of the models actually work well with it but open to others. Absolutely no Acer interest as they already screwed me before. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop for school and gaming! Posted: 19 Aug 2019 04:21 AM PDT Hello! I don't know very much about computers, so I'm afraid I can't be too specific about what I need, but hopefully the following can give You a sense of what I'm looking for. My budget is around 1000$ but I'm willing to spend more on the right laptop. I'll be buying in Denmark. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. - I would prefer a 2 in 1, if it's possible. How important is weight and thinness to you? - I would like the laptop to be relatively lightweight and thin, as I will be carrying it around with me every day. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. - Windows or Mac. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. - Around 15" would be great, but wouldn't mind a bit smaller. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - I'd like to do some gaming once in a while and I've also considered buying some music software like Ableton. Other than that I just need to it to boot up relatively fast and run Microsoft Office and other standard school programs (nothing special). If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - I want it to be able to run The Sims 4 smoothly, preferably on high settings. I'd also like to play Minecraft on relatively high settings as well. I don't play that many games and especially any new ones but that's because my previous laptops haven't been able to run them, so I'd love a laptop where I could try out a few more games. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - A built-in webcam would be nice to have, though it's not that important. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - My previous laptops have been an HP Pavilion dv7-6080eo and a 2010 Macbook Pro. I should mention that I do tend to be a bit picky about the way a laptop looks. I considered buying a Macbook Air even though it's really overpriced, solely because I think it's a beautiful laptop and I like and am familiar with the operating system. So while it may sound silly, I probably will take the look of the laptop into consideration. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2019 04:15 AM PDT Hey I'm from Germany and I search a Laptop between 300-500€. I don't really care about the weight and the thinness. It should have windows. The screen doesn't matter that much it should just be not too small. I want to use it to play video games mainly and sometimes video editing. It should run most of the games at at least 60 fps on medium settings. If that's not possible please just say how much I would have to spent or what I could get for that prize. [link] [comments] |

Laptop for grad school. Considering switching off of Mac for the first time. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:01 AM PDT Hi Reddit I'm looking at buying a new laptop as I start grad school this fall. I've always used a Mac but am thinking about switching off the system since it feels like the competition has been caught up and the universal port that requires an adaptor for everything seems like it would be annoying. I've done a bit of research but there's so much out there outside the world of Mac that it's hard to narrow things down. If people think a new Mac really would be the best thing for my needs though I'm not against getting a Mac at all. I'm rocking a 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro rn but it's been on its last legs for a while. I appreciate the help and suggestions!
$900-$1300 or so, USA. Cheaper is always better and if there was a good reason to spend like $2000+ I'd be willing to, but this seems like the general range of "good" laptops.
Don't really have a preference on 2 in 1. Not sure what the trade offs would be. I feel like those became a thing after I bought my last laptop. Would like a good battery life. I'll be using it a lot. Efficient use of money to specifications is more important to me than The hardware looking nice.
Not super important. I will carry it often but don't mind weight that much. Though I'd rather not carry around a total tank.
Have used Mac for pretty much my whole life but am willing to switch. I use google drive for basic office type stuff for what that's worth.
I use RStudio for stats coding and will be learning how to use GIS. Not 100% certain at this point, but I'd expect to use GIS more than R. I'm not sure if these programs require more processing power than you'd get with any/most laptops. I stream a lot of tv and sports through my laptop for what that's worth.
Generally good quality I guess? A good display would be good for streaming stuff. Finger-print reader would be cool but I wouldn't care at all if it wasn't there.
In summary I'm looking for a good laptop that I can use for a long time. I'll do a good bit of streaming and some coding on it. I'll use it a lot so a good battery life would be good. A nice display would be preferred. Portability is nice, but a less important feature. Hardware aesthetics and cool techy type stuff that doesn't actually make the computer better for use are cool but I care about all the other stuff more. Willing to go to the high end of the price spectrum for a good reason but would prefer to stay in the 900-1300 range. Thanks again for any help! [link] [comments] |

Budget linux convertible for university (programming, basic office work) and light gaming Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:31 AM PDT Hi, first I need to apologize in advance for any mispells,I'm not native English speaker. I'm looking for a convertible (both detachable or foldable like lenovo Yoga). The main prerequisites are -possibility to install linux(preferibily Manjaro) -touch screen and foldable/detachable keyboard -at least decent screen resolution/viewing angle -kinda on a budget(sub 400 would be optimal but if it is worth it i can go up to 500/550 EUR) The usecase would be my main portable device, for heavy work I have at home a good desktop pc.bartolomeo.besio It would be used for university task such as not very heavy programming, basic libre office tasks, and media consuption. It would be nice if it could handle some light gaming(sub 2015 turn based strategy, at max rocket league with the ultra low pack) but it is not a priority. Battery life is kinda important but not essential. Now i'm running with a lenovo v110-15ISK but i'd like to switch to someting more portable and with a tablet mode for ease of use. I've already started looking around and I've found the following -chuwi hi10air;might be but it seems to be kinda underpowered -lenovo yoga 330 with n4000; same as chuwi but slightly better. It would be nice if it is present on amazon italy but I already saw very low offering in this departement, so i?m open to chinese sites or similar. Thanks in advance to anyone for the help <3 [link] [comments] |
Need help deciding on a laptop for graphic design Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:13 AM PDT Hi, All. Thanks for making such a subreddit. I'm split between two laptops. I will mainly use the laptop for graphic design, no gaming, nothing else besides basic browsing. I have another laptop for other stuff. The two laptops are i5 9300h 8GB RAM DDR4 - (Upgradable to 32 GB) GTX 1050 3GB 256 SSD + 1 TB HDD Around 85-90% SRGB COLOR DISPLAY It's basically a gaming laptop with a decend screen and really good performance The other laptop is HP Probook x360 440 g1 I5 8250U 16 GB RAM DDR4 (Upgradable too) Intel UHD 620 256 SSD The display is 400 nits and 99-100% SRGB COLOR And the plus is that the laptop is convertible to a tablet and has a touchscreen that supports a stylus pen for drawing etc. I like the second option more even though it doesn't have a dedicated GPU and it falls short in everything but the display. I've heard and read comments online about the i5-8250u throttling and not working properly as well as heating up quickly, now given that photoshop doesn't use the CPU at 100% 24/7, but only when certain actions are done, I'm wondering if this CPU is good enough for now and the near future, or if I should go for the Gaming Laptop and future proof my setup? I like the idea of using the stylus pen for my work aswell as the quality of the screen and portability of the laptop, but the overall performance worries me. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Laptop for studying and travelling Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:11 AM PDT Hello, I' m looking to buy a laptop ASAP which will be used, primarily, for research and writing. In addition, it needs to be very portable as I travel a lot and it will be used then. Therefore, I concluded on getting an Ultrabook. I was going to pull the trigger on a Macbook 2019 Pro 256GB but even though I couldn't find much sign on reddit about issues with the 2019 keyboard, it has me worrying. The other 'main contender' for me has been a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 7th gen base model.
Maximum being £1300 in the UK. (I get the student discount.)
I don't really care either way if it is a 2 in 1 or not. Battery life is the more important of the two for me, however, ideally want a combination between the two.
Very important. A key reason in looking at the Macbook Pro and the X1 Carbon.
I'm much more used to windows but would be completely comfortable with Mac as well.
13- 14 inches
No gaming or programming.
N/A
I will be doing a lot of writing. I went to a store to get a feel for the Macbook keyboard and didn't have an issue with it, it seemed perfectly fine to me. I haven't tried a Thinkpad keyboard before but the reputation of great keyboards is reassuring. My biggest worry in regards to the Macbook is the keyboard stopping to work as many of the 2018 models did. Whilst there is the 4 year warranty, the nearest Apple Store to me is far enough away that it would be an inconvenience to get there and have it fixed. Is there any actual consensus on the 2019 Macbook keyboards?
Lastly, in regards to, say, the X1C7, some popular issues i see are in regards to the quality of the screen and the battery life, how valid are these concerns. Whilst I've focused on the Macbook and Thinkpad in this post, I am also open to other laptop suggestions as well. Many thanks in advance to anyone who takes their time to reply to this and help me with my decision. [link] [comments] |
Acer Helios 500 or Acer Triton 500? Or something else? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:47 AM PDT Hi all, I want to choose a robust gaming/programming/data analysing/screen capture laptop. My price limit is 2000$ (1500£). I do not want Mac because I had a bad experience with them so I decided to buy Acer laptop. I also hate Alienware series, because I still have nightmares about my Dell Alienware M17x. The worst investment I have ever done! Searching for the best configurations for my price limit I have found that Acer Triton 500 is very interesting. It has good video card RTX 2060 6 gb, 16 gb RAM and ssd storage which I preferer. Moreover, it is also light weighted – just 2.1 kg! I did not find any reasons why should I not buy this on. https://us-store.acer.com/predator-triton-500-pt515-51-71vv However, here also exist a giant of gaming laptops Acer Predator Helios 500. But I was struggling to find an appropriate configuration of it and compare with Triton 500. It has also less battery life and weight twice more. However, cooling and gaming/streaming performance should be much better for Helios 500. But I am not going to play new AAA games, but I have some specific preferences: I like RTS and RPG, or even mixes of them like Kenshi. I also love Civilization 5, StarCraft 2 and League of Legends. For programming purposes I am using Python and it is requiring some processor power as I know. Could you please suggest me the optimal laptop? [link] [comments] |

I can get a 2019 Macbook Air for £849 through work and wondered if anyone can comment who has a similar use case to mine? I would mainly be using Microsoft Word & Excel along with accounting software and only having a few safari tabs open for research. For leisure I'd only really use it for Netflix & Spotify as I game on my PS4. [link] [comments] |
Looking for good 2-in-1 laptop for drawing (and maybe gaming) Posted: 18 Aug 2019 09:47 PM PDT
The only thing that's missing is a drawing pen, which is why I also need a pen recommendation. Also, for the gaming aspect, I may consider getting an eGPU later if the laptop's dedicated GPU is not good enough. So, do you think this laptop is good enough for my main need? If not, I'm open to alternatives with specifications that are as good as this. [link] [comments] |
