Cheap Laptop for Grad School $400-$700 USA Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:18 PM PDT
Professional looking/boring would be good, though not strictly necessary. At this price point I'm not expecting a gaming rig that says MAXIMUM BADASS in light-up EL letters across the front, but functionality trumps everything else, so I'll take it in a purple Hello Kitty theme if it's got good specs. Trying to strike a balance between storage size and storage speed. (see below.)
I've seen a two year old mid-range HP Pavilion (dunno the specs, this was casual observation of someone else's computer) take about 30 seconds to run the Matlab code we use to process about 15 hi-res images. So the processing isn't super computationally intensive, but I intend to bring a lot more computation and programming to my own projects than the lab currently does, so I do want to bring as much "oomph" for my money as I can to it. A major consideration is the use of digital micrographs (microscope images). These are HUGE files because they contain hi-res images and loads of metadata. An SSD would be amazing for speed, but again... these are HUGE files. One day's work can easily generate a gig and a half of data. A project I have in mind will multiply this eight times. So it's hard to strike the balance between speed and storage space at this price point, though I can just archive using an external SSD and essentially infinite cloud storage, so maybe that's not so important. It might be nice to have at least an extra bay for another hard drive which I can cannibalize from a laptop with a dead mobo to get the best of both worlds. A larger screen wouldn't hurt either, but in all likelihood, I'm buying a second monitor. As for gaming... it's a "nice to have" kind of thing. I don't expect to have a lot of free time, but I can envision myself being in the lab until 11 pm and having to wait an hour while a reaction finishes up before I can go home. I've been a frugal college student who's gotten by on playing five-year old games for a while now and I don't think that's going to change. I'm also willing to accept my budget is too small, but I can save money for something better. I just need something right now because my Lenovo X131e is simply not going to cut it. I have a desktop at home, and this will probably live at the office. I will want to take it to other rooms in the same building, and occasionally travel with it but weight and size aren't super important. I'm aware I'll have to compromise, so I'm just looking for the best I can get at the price point. Thanks in advance! Edit: I was looking at an ASUS Vivobook S410 out of sheer exhaustion. Razer Blade 15 (Rtx 2060 144hz) Vs Gigabyte Aero ( 1660ti 240hz) Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:08 PM PDT Hi, first time posting here. I am looking to get a thin gaming laptop when I attend university and I narrowed down to these two options: Gigabyte AERO 15 SA-7US2130SH 15" GTX 1660ti 240hz Razer Blade 15 - Base Model RTX 2060 144hz I will be using it for gaming and school assignments so longer battery life will be preferable. Some of the games I play are Apex Legends, Overwatch and CyberPunk 2077 when it gets released. May I know which one is better in long run? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
[US] $200-1200 Laptop for Computer Science Student & Game Developer Posted: 31 Jul 2019 09:22 PM PDT Hello suggesters, I'm starting college in a few weeks as a CS major and I'm looking to get a laptop. I also do game development and alot of related random stuff in my free time. I already have a very powerful desktop PC that I'll be bringing, but I can see how it would be nice to be able to do some intensive game development and gaming on-the-go with a laptop. So I'm looking for a mid tier laptop (probably with a dedi GPU) that can handle intensive tasks fairly well, but I don't need to break the bank since I'll already have a good PC in my dorm. Willing to spend I'd say up to $1200, but please don't try and get as close as you can to that number. Anything under that price point that you think makes sense for my situation - go ahead and suggest.

Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:18 AM PDT I'm looking for a laptop that's going to be used for mostly schoolworks (rendering, architecture) and some light gaming. As of now i have 2 options, the new Helios 300 2019 and Lenovo Y540 both at 1500 dollars. Specs: Helios 300 -144 Hz -i7-9750H -GTX 1660ti 6GB -16GB DDR4 -256GB SSD Y540 -144Hz -i7-9750H -RTX 2060 6GB -16GB DDR4 -1TB SSD I'm kind of leaning on the Y540 but i see A LOT of great reviews about the helios 300. What do you guys think? [link] [comments] |

Help a noob look for a laptop for school! Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:23 PM PDT Hi guys I'm looking for a laptop to last me 4 years of school with a budget of max CAD$2000. My school website has provided the following specs best suited for the kind of work we'll be doing:
I'm going to be using this laptop for digital renderings, power points, essay writing etc. Programs I'm going to be running are some adobe programs, sketchup, autocad, and revit to name a few... I'm also going to be travelling with this a lot, so a 15" screen and a weight that isn't too heavy for long transit is preferable Just want to make sure I don't make the wrong decision on a laptop!! thanks guyssss [link] [comments] |
Bought a laptop for gaming/uni. Trying to decide if I replace it, send help Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:22 PM PDT So at the start of the year I bought a Lenovo Legion Y530 reading that it was a solid laptop that I could use for gaming as well as university. I've been quite happy with how it performed playing games but the problem is that the battery life sucks when I need to use it in class. It will die in less than 1~2 hours even when using conservative battery options and simply using Firefox with some tabs open. Its even worse when I'm trying to use programs such as MATLAB or an IDE. So I have quite a dilemma, and I've been considering a few options. I could: a) Suck it up and take the (annoyingly bulky) charger with me everywhere and have my laptop always plugged in. If anyone has some battery saving tips that would be great. This would be the cheapest option, obviously. b) Sell my current laptop and buy a more expensive one that would have a longer battery life with a dedicated GPU for gaming. c) Sell my current laptop and buy another that doesn't have a dedicated GPU and either build a relatively cheap gaming PC or use an eGPU setup at home. (I wouldn't do any gaming other than when I'm at home). eGPU cases seem quite expensive and there are some performance drops but that's not too big of an issue. This option would allow me to buy a ultrabook with really good battery life, but probably the most expensive option. Some direction and suggestions would really be appreciated. Here is some more info if you require it.
Thank you so much for any help <3. [link] [comments] |

Pick or include any that apply. Whatever gets the job done in my budget. • How important is weight and thinness to you? Does not matter. • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 PRO or better, Linux. • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Virtualization as well as dual boot. • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? None. • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Just gets the job done! A laptop for light gaming and web browsing when I'm on the go. Posted: 01 Aug 2019 01:31 AM PDT I'm looking for a laptop that is light weight and can be easily taken with me for when I go to my mates house in the weekend. I travel on a mountain bike and can roughly take 20 minutes there and back so the laptop has to be light and easy for me to take with me. My budget is around £1300 and I usually play games such as League of Legends and the odd game of Overwatch here and there. Obviously, League of Legends isnt the most demanding game and can run on any potato out there but i want to get quite high frame rates and have a display around 120 Hz so I can have a smooth experience(due to me having a 144hz 1440p panel at home). The panel itself has to be 1080p atleast and the IO needs to be 'respectable'. I was looking at the Razer Blade Stealth with the 1080p screen and the MX 150 graphics card and wondering if this would meet my listed criteria or if I should reconsider what laptop I'd want to be purchasing. Looking for a MX150 Ultrabook. Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:16 PM PDT I live in the UK and will be moving to my University in September. I need an ultrabook with a MX150/250 so that i can do some light gaming on it. Would prefer thin bezels. i7 needed. Battery life around 7-8 hours should be more than enough i guess. Budget is around £1000-£1200 The zenbook 14 would've been my choice but the UK model doesn't come with the MX150 and is limited to 8GB ram. 14-15" preferred. I am looking at the HP Envy x360 but after looking at those non existent bezels of the zenbook , everything else seems bad ;-; Just want any suggestions i might not have considered yet. Thank you! MacBook vs Razer Blade vs ??? for CS Degree? Posted: 31 Jul 2019 04:17 AM PDT I'm starting my CS degree in a few weeks and I'm unsure of which kind of laptop I should purchase. Several people have told me that owning a MacBook will make my life easier, and that Macs are the go to for programming. On the flip side I have a also been told that there isn't really any major advantage to using a Mac, especially for the purpose of school. I don't have any issue buying a Mac if they really are superior, but I feel like my money could be much better spent if a Mac is not required. If I had my druthers I would get one of the new Razer Blades because I would also like to be able to game, which a MacBook can't really offer. The price point is comparable, but I feel as if I'm getting far more machine for the money with the Blade. Would this put me at some inherent disadvantage? Is it true that I really need a MacBook? Even if I don't need a Mac, would using a gaming laptop be a bad choice? Is there a better option you would suggest? Budget really isn't a concern, I just want my money to benefit me as much as possible. Any input would be wonderful. Edit: Just to be perfectly clear, my education and school work are the number one priority. I would like to have the option to game, but not at a significant expense to my school work. If a Mac (or something else) would significantly improve my experience at the expense of gaming then that's fine. That's the information I'm looking for here. [link] [comments] |
Macbook Pro vs. XPS 13 2-in-1 vs. X1 Carbon Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:09 PM PDT I will be attending college this fall, and am looking for a laptop that would be portable and good enough to handle heavy applications that I might need. These are the three laptops that are suggested most to me. What are the pros and cons of each? What would you personally choose? Any comment will be appreciated :) thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:47 PM PDT I've been using an old MacBook pro for the past two years and it's been fine but it's getting old and the battery is not lasting too long. I'm studying civil engineering and minoring in data science so I will likely need to download some CAD and CS softwares. Initially I was thinking of getting a newer MacBook but I heard that many engineering softwares don't work on Macs. So far I've come across the Dell XPS and Microsoft Surface Pro but I'm not sure if those would be good laptops to get. Total budget and country of purchase: Would prefer something under 1.5k, but I'm willing to spend more if it means that it's a high quality laptop that will last. I live in the United States Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life would be nice! How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important since I'll be carrying my laptop around campus, but I'd rather have a thicker laptop if it's going to work better. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I think I will need Windows and Linux but I'm not positive. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will likely need CAD, no photo or video editing, and a few games If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As of right now I only have Minecraft downloaded on my laptop but I may get a few more in the future. Not sure about settings and FPS Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would like a decent keyboard at least and reliable build quality is important. Don't need a touch screen but it would be cool! Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically I want a laptop that will last and will work with the programs I need! Also one that is sturdy and won't break easily. [link] [comments] |
