Cheap college laptop for in-class java, mysql, web programming Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:36 PM PDT I already have a beefy windows desktop, but I just found out I need a laptop to use in the classroom for my java and database courses. We will use it do examples and lab assignments. In addition i will take a web programming course next year which i assume will also require one. Can someone please give me advice on the minimum specs on a new laptop that will fulfill my needs? I will only be using this inside the classroom for about 3 hours a week total. For everything else I will use my desktop. I guess I might use it to read pdfs/ebooks in between classes also, but I won't be doing any other work or gaming on it. I found this Samsung Notebook Flash (Intel® Celeron® Processor) for $275. Will it do? How is the price? It is only 4gb ram and I didn't even know they made Celeron anymore. Like I said I really don't want to spend much since I will barely use it, but it should be good enough that I won't face any slowdown. https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/windows-laptops/notebook-flash/notebook-flash-np530xbb-k05us/ [link] [comments] |
Am I correctly helping my girlfriend get a new laptop? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:54 PM PDT I'm a huge r/buildapc guy. I'm on there like 10 times a day. Laptops are a little out of my expertise, but my girlfriend tasked me with helping her find a new pc. She currently has an HP Stream laptop with 4gb of ram and a shitty pentium or celeron Nxxxx. I wanted to upgrade the 32gb of storage with a 120gb ssd to help her hold out until she gets a new one, but it turns out it was a soldered 32gb eMMC SSD and not a sata one. In the meantime, her budget is like 150 bucks, but it's closer to 130. She isn't really all that comfortable staying from windows, so my chromebook idea got shot down pretty fast. She also needs to be able to use photoshop, so that also was important in the decision process. Currently, she really likes a refurbished system with an i3-4005u, 8gb of ram, and a 500Gb HDD for 130 bucks. After showing her that one, I found her one for 170, but featuring an i7-3687u, 8gb of ram, and a 256Gb SSD. Both are relatively thin laptops, but the second one is technically an ultrabook. The size isn't as important as price or functionality for her, but she doesn't want a brick. Both have windows 10, but the i7 one has Pro. Edit* I forgot to mention that in the event that its worth it to take the i7 system, I'm willing to add like 40 bucks to the cause. She cant work on a system like she has. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop for college, preferably under $600 but definitely under $800 Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:09 PM PDT All my college courses are either researching, writing, or sharing documents, and my iPad with a keyboard attachment can't keep up anymore. I'm looking for something that'll last my last 2 years in college but can also play lowkey end games like fallout nv so I don't feel like I've wasted my money on a chrome book. Thank you! Does anybody still make systems under 15" with gaming graphics? Posted: 30 Aug 2019 03:24 AM PDT Hope it's OK not to use the form as I'm not looking for specific recommendations, yet. I'm still using an aging (2012) Clevo W230ST, and it's finally starting to struggle to run modern games at full resolution. I really like the relatively tiny form factor (12" screen, just over 4 pounds) but until the last year or so, it could manage a decent framerate on just about anything. The amazing thing that Clevo did with this system was to cram enough thermal management for a 765M -- by all accounts "upper midrange" at the time -- into such a tiny chassis without making it weigh as much as a 15" system. I'm aware that systems have gotten thinner and lighter on the whole, with smaller bezels, so there are some 15" gaming systems that are only an inch wider or only a pound heavier. I'd still like to see how small and portable I can go, though -- what I really want is basically a Nintendo Switch that can play No Man's Sky at 1080p60 or better, on a plane. Is anybody still active in this market segment? I've looked at a few search engines and it seems like as soon as you select 1660 Ti or better, all the screen-size options under 15" disappear. Best I've been able to find is 15" and right around 2kg. Am I missing anything? [link] [comments] |

Looking for a new foldable companion. Posted: 30 Aug 2019 03:22 AM PDT Hello everyone :) I need your help picking a Thinkpad. I am going to start my Masters this fall, and I need a new portable companion to help me through the day and the next 2-3 years. As writing a lot of papers is a regular occurrence, I am looking for an excellent keyboard, so naturally, Thinkpads came to mind. I also want and will also have to start to get into programming with my Masters. I also enjoy the connectivity of Thinkpads which do not doom me to live the dongle life (dongles I would lose, I am certain). I have looked at several student deals that are available to me here in Germany, two of which have caught my eye. They, however, appear to be special student models - I don't know if these come with any significant drawbacks that I might be unaware of. The models are as follows:
Could one consider these 'good deals' or should I rather look at different Thinkpads / (regular) models / other (Lenovo) devices as a whole (I was also recommended the Lenovo T480/490)? I am open to all advice and every recommendation I can get! I am happy to invest money into something worthwhile, just want to feel like I am getting a good device for the money :) [link] [comments] |

MSI GF75 - 60hz or 120hz display for movies? (non-gamer) Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:28 AM PDT I have decided on the laptop I want to buy, the MSI GF75. My only issue before purchase now is that I see that there are two different versions: one has a 60hz display and the other has 120hz display (they are both available at the same price). I am not a gamer. I will be using the laptop to produce music and video (that's why I need something with great specs). I WILL be watching FILMS on this laptop though. Will the 120hz look "weird" for movies? I've been looking at movies on 144hz laptops at Best Buy and I do not like the way they look (fake looking "soap opera effect" kind of look). The 60hz laptops look better for movies to me, they don't seem to have this issue. So, what about 120hz? Supposedly it is better at matching up with the different frame rates than 144hz, because it is an even multiple of 24, 30, and 60. By this logic it would also be better than 60hz in respect to 24fps. But I don't know, I can't really know personally unless I could look at the two versions side by side. If the 120hz has the same issue as 144hz I will get the 60hz. However, if it does not have that issue, and has some improvement over the 60hz, then I will get the 120hz. Sorry for the long-winded question. Hopefully someone here has some experience with these technologies and can offer some advice. Thanks! -Jon [link] [comments] |
Are 15" laptops good for movie watching? Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:11 AM PDT Hello there, I am not comfortable seeing 17" laptops getting in very niche hardcore gaming department. I am using 17" multimedia laptop and watching movies is amazing on it. Sadly it's really hard to find nice offer for 17" laptop for watching movies that ain't some extremely expensive gaming machine. I do not game, but 2 extra inches are great for me. I don't like nor use TVs anymore because they are getting humongous and not portable. I always watch movies and even TV on laptop. I lay down in bed and put it on my pelvis area. It's perfect experience. So even though 15" laptops are most popular and you can nail best deal with such, from your experience is it good for watching movies and being your only "TV/screen" you use. If mantra for TVs: "Bigger is better" is now all too common, does it also apply to laptop for this specific usage scenario? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:44 AM PDT Hello everybody! My gf is searching for a new laptop and she came across this 2 in 1 Asus laptop. Specs: 2 in 1 ASUS VivoBook Flip TP412UA-EC056T, 14" Full HD Touch, Intel® Core™ i3-7020U processor 2.3GHz, 4GB, SSD 256GB, Intel HD Graphics 620, Windows 10 Home She wants a laptop for some web surfing, watching movies and YouTube videos and maybe some Word, Excel etc. This laptop is around 500 euros, is it worth it at this price, is there anything better? The maximum she would pay is 500 euros. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferably a lighter and thin laptop as I will be carrying it around in my bag a lot throughout the day Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer a larger screen size such as 14" or 15" maybe, however 13" would be fine Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming: minecraft maybe, but not too many heavy games Programs: Microsoft office, Acrobat Reader, photoshop and most of the adobe software, Matlab If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mainly just minecraft, no preference for settings or FPS just as long as it can run smoothly without lag or overheating. So not too much gaming, mainly just for work Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and touchpad is very important, good build quality, touch screen and finger-print reader would be nice but not super important, no optical drive needed. Preferably 16 gb RAM but 8 would also be fine, and I would want an i7 processor Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So right now based on my research of laptops I am leaning towards either the Lenovo X1 Carbon 7th Gen or the Dell XPS 15. However, I would like to know if there are similar or better options [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:23 AM PDT Hey everyone, thanks for taking the time! I'm looking for a 2-in-1 laptop for video editing (simple youtube videos) in wondershare filmora9 and drawing (I use Krita). It doesn't really need to run games since I have a PC and a ps4, would be sweet if it could run minecraft though :). I'm currently looking at Dell Latitude laptops since I can get a big discount through work (50-60%!) I've been looking at these 3 options: Latitude 7390 2-in-1 series
And Latitude 5300 2-in-1 series:
I don't really understand the big differences in price to be honest :). Also I'm open to other laptop suggestions, I was just looking at these because of the big discount and the pen that comes with it for drawing looks pretty cool :D. Total budget and country of purchase

Laptop for 3d Animation but not for Rendering Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:20 AM PDT
1600 USD. Can be a little higher.
Good battery life.
No more than 1 inch thick.
Windows
At least 15'6
Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya, Zbrush, Blender. No games.
Good screen.
At minimum, the laptop needs to last 3.5 - 4 hours if I'm working in Adobe software and 3d software. I'm not going to be rendering 3d work on the laptop. I'm going to leave that to my desktop. Also, would I need a really good GPU if I'm just working in the viewport of 3d programs? Would a MX250 2gb GPU be decent enough to deal with shading in the viewport? I figured that I could just hide some stuff on the viewport if I have a really complex 3d scene. Most laptops that are recommended for 3d animation are gaming laptops that have horrible battery life. It seems like most gaming laptops last around 2 or 2.5 hours when gaming. Would the battery on those gaming laptops last 3.5 - 4 hours if I'm not rendering? I assume that the Adobe software and the 3d software I'm using aren't as power intensive as gaming is. Also, thermals seem to be a problem on some gaming laptops. I guess that won't really affect me if I'm not gaming or rendering. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:11 AM PDT I am located in Singapore and the price difference between the two is like USD 237. Swift has a slightly larger screen. I know they are not in a similar price range, but wanted to know what people would recommend. Acer - i5 MX250 Matebook - i5 MX 150 Most of the time the laptop will be used for web browsing, school work, and watching Netflix. Don't think I am going to be doing much gaming. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:31 PM PDT My other laptop broke and is past warranty so I thought screw it I'll get a new one. My old laptop could play most games but some of the best looking games were barely out of reach. Anyway any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Looking for a gaming/video editing laptop Posted: 29 Aug 2019 08:17 AM PDT Hi! I currently have a razer blade 14 inch 2017. I quite like it, but I just found out that I can't really upgrade much in it, which cuts it's long term lifetime by a lot. Previously I had a MacBook pro from 2011 that I kept alive and strong for 7 years by replacing parts over time. When it finally died I switched back to Windows cause MacBooks are so incredibly expensive for good hardware, and I wanted to be able to upgrade. I stupidly assumed I would be able to do this with razer since it's Windows. Lesson learned. Anyways I quite like the razer, it's fast, looks and feels good, the keyboard is cool, really no complaints other than the non-upgradeable parts. My model is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 and 16gb of RAM. This works for me at the moment, though I've hit some limits in video editing which prompted all this. I'm considering selling the razer now while it still has some value and using the money to help fund a longer term laptop. So details about what I'm looking for in a potential replacement: Budget isn't too much of a concern. I'd like to spend in the range of $2500CAD with some wiggle room. $3000 max. Buying in Canada. I want to be able to upgrade my parts so I can keep this one alive for another 7 years. I hesitate on laptops like acer or hp, as these sort of generic brands in my experience fail after a year or two. Maybe I'm wrong. Build quality and thinness/lightness are important to me as I live a nomadic life. 15 inch is my ideal screen size. I quite enjoy being able to game, and I edit a lot of video so a good graphics card and minimum 16gb RAM are important. I don't need a 4k screen, but a quality 1080p one would be nice. 4k screen is a bonus. Not much into gimmicks like touch screens, touch bars, fingerprint readers, etc. I just need solid internals and solid build quality. Maybe a trackpad that doesn't suck. I'd be looking to buy around October this year. Open to building one myself too if that makes more sense, but I'm not sure what kind of limitations there are on build quality doing it myself. One thing I'll give the razer is the actual frame/size of the laptop is quite nice. I appreciate any suggestions, thanks in advance! Edit: seeing lots of reviews mentioning bloatware on many laptops, would definitely like to avoid that if at all possible [link] [comments] |
Laptop suitable for coding work Posted: 29 Aug 2019 10:25 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** -$2800 AUD, Australia- * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** In order of importance: best specs, battery life. Prefer if it weren't 2 in 1. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Thinness isn't really important. Not too heavy though, I will be carrying it around everyday. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Linux, preferably, but more than willing to do the installation myself * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** No smaller than 13" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Will be coding and running MATLAB/Mathematica, but no photo/video editing or CAD. Won't be gaming on the laptop. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Comfortable keyboard for coding/typing up reports and assignments. Don't want too many unnecessary features, would prefer reliable build quality. Would prefer no touch screen. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I thought it would be good if it came with an SSD if I'm going to install linux. School laptop for around 600, looking for a used business laptop or a new one Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:00 PM PDT
~600, united states
-best specifications, portability also. A nice screen would be nice but not ideal, i will probably watch shows and movies on it.
-it is going to be used for school, so lighter and thinner would be ideal but it doesn't need to be ultra thin or light
-windows
-14 or 15.6
-honestly its mostly for schoolwork that involves excel and other light programs, possibly photo editing but also would like to be able to watch netflix, the laptop I have now cant run netflix smoothly. Doesn't need to be a powerhouse, I use my desktop for any gaming
-touch screen doesn't matter to me, but I'm not anti touchscreen - if I need that for a good quality screen I'd take it. I would prefer it to have a decent keyboard, some laptop keyboards seem impossible to type accurately on. I have an x220 right now and I'm used to that.
-I'm not against buying some business laptop used on ebay, but I would also buy a new laptop if its worth it with similar specs. ones that im considering are
