after every new update, it feels like i have to open more and more windows to do the same things.

i am sure there are more examples, but the thing that is really bugging me right now is the sound control panel.

my main hobby is gaming. i am sure that isn't uncommon. what is uncommon is my particular setup. to make a long story short, i have to tinker with my sound settings a lot. all i used to have to do is right click the speaker icon on my windows tray and i could get right to the sound control panel. 2 clicks and i had access to the tool i needed.

now the process is, right click speaker in the tray. click open sound settings. finally, click sound control panel. this is a whole additional click. in the grand scheme of things, that may not seem like a lot, but after a while it adds up.

any person who has ever worked with designing a good UIX will tell you that the less clicks any action takes the better. just like with engineering, it is never how much you can add to something so much as how much you can take away. simplicity trumps all else.

as i said at the start, i know there are more examples of this type of thing. microsoft has been doing it for years. the same settings get buried deeper and deeper in menus and apps until it becomes so confusing to control your own computer that you need to spend hours on google to know how to disable something as simple as automatic updates.

to top it all off, they also force such stupid things down their customers throats. they finally give us an actual search bar but the web search can only be used with bing.

sorry for the rant, but windows just pisses me off sometimes with their choices. it is a classic case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." my system works perfectly fine for my needs and then suddenly an update comes along an i have to adjust to it rather than it being seemlessly integrated.

Microsoft EULA: You are not permitted to keep Windows 7 installation on your PC since 2020. (If your PC was originally equipped by Win10 OEM)

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:59 AM PDT

I have found exactly this while reading Windows 10 EULA: "... If you acquired a device from a manufacturer or installer with a Professional version of Windows preinstalled on it and it is configured to run in full feature mode, you may use either a Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 7 Professional version, but only for so long as Microsoft provides support for that earlier version as set forth in (aka.ms/windowslifecycle). ..."

Hello all. I have several backups on hard drives, and some of them have repetitive files. Is there any software to sort through those files, organize them, and maybe delete the duplicated ones?

    Old laptop randomly shutting down.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:18 PM PDT

After about 4 years without using my old (5-6 years) laptop, I decided to revive it by changing to an SSD and installing Windows 10 on it, but now it randomly shuts down. By randomly I mean it could take 2 minutes or 2 hours.

After checking event viewer I found that an error called HAL happens right before shutting down, followed by two critical errors; this is repeated every time it shuts down.

After browsing a bit about that error, I found that it appears to be something related to the hardware, so I tried changing to the old disk and changing the RAM memory for another one from another old laptop but neither of those things worked, it kept shutting down randomly and giving the same error.

What can I do about this?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:17 PM PDT

Was voice chatting with friends and suddenly everything sounded very flat with no bass and a lot of reverb. Later I realized that my headphones were playing audio like speakers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my Realtek audio drivers with no avail. I have checked the events and recieved this :

Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service IntcAzAudAddService for Device Instance ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0236&SUBSYS_17AA3898&REV_1000\4&13C89904&0&0001 with the following status: 0.

I have tried looking into it but haven't gotten much luck. Any help?

Really need to upgrade to 64 bit OS but I'm getting conflicting information

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:25 PM PDT

I really need to upgrade my computer to Win 7 64 bit. Right now it's running Win 7 Pro 32-bit. I look at the upgrade prerequisites and it says my CPU has to support 64-bits or have a 64-bit instruction set or whatever. It does, according to the manufacturer. It's an i5-4200m so it shouldn't have a problem. But when I look in the System Information it shows it as an x86 based system which, as far as I understand, can't support a 64-bit OS. What's the deal here? There's no reason this laptop shouldn't support a 64-bit OS. Should I just go ahead and install? Does this have something to do with the FAT? I'm pretty sure it's NTFS, like everyone else.

replace Windows Start Menu with other program

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:22 PM PDT

Is there a simple way (I'm fine working withr egistry and such) to replace the start menu with another program? Basically when I tap the windows key I want to run a command `rainmeter -skin skin.dll`, instead of the start menu opening.

Let me know if this is the wrong subreddit for this type of question.

    Unlocking Password Protected Folder

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:48 PM PDT

So I have a folder with some important documents in it that my father sent me. The content of the folder are password locked as they contain sensitive information. He got one of his colleagues to show him how to set up a password lock on it for security. Unfortunately he has forgotten the password and I can't open the files because it ask for the password to them. Is there a way I can bypass or get these files unlocked somehow? I've researched but not really getting exactly answers.

Time zone not syncing in Windows 10

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:18 PM PDT

I travel back and forth between Central and Eastern time zones for extended periods pretty frequently. I usually bring my desktop with Windows 10 and I've noticed that my time zone never seems to sync up when traveling . Both time zone and time are set automatically in my settings and I have location enabled, yet I always have to go in and turn off the automatic setting, change the time zone manually, and then turn it back on. It does work on my Surface Pro 2, which obviously has GPS, but I would assume that my location can be read from my ISP assigned IP given that checking my IP reveals, at the very least, my state and often even the specific city I'm in. Anyone else have this issues? Any idea how to fix it? It's not a huge problem, but it is annoying.

Windows 10 Home 1903 activated by default?

Few days ago I fresh installed windows 10 update 1903 (iso file downloaded from the Microsoft official page) but somethings strange is happening... when I went to system properties it said "Windows is activated"... BUT I didn't activate it!! I don't even have a license... I thought it was just a bug and it would go away after few hours or a restart and it would behave like it always did when inactivated, but it still the same...
anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Whenever i try to change the icon of my flash drive it doesn't work properly

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:47 AM PDT

I looked up several tutorials online all explaining the same thing

    1. Open a text document

    2. Enter

    [Autorun]

    label=

    icon=

    1. Change the file name and type to autorun.inf

    2. Save the image you want to be an icon in the flash drive

But when ever I do that the icon doesn't appear

Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

Any Way to Transfer Windows 10 License?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 08:44 AM PDT

Any Way to Transfer Windows 10 License?

    Hi everyone,

I just built a new PC and I am very happy with it, however, when I attempt to type in my Windows 10 key from my old PC, i am given the screen below. It seems like it does not allow me to use my old key, is there any way I can transfer the old Windows license? My old PC was pre-built and came with Windows 10, and my new one was built by me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 7 Error code 80092004, 2019-08 Monthly Rollup

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 10:15 PM PDT

0x80092004 - Windows encountered an unknown error.

    for KB4512506

Please try to help me if you can. I've been struggling with this for a very long time.

Ive been trying for hours to fix this. I am trying to install the 2019-08 Monthly Rollup for Windows 7. I'm anxious because I heard this is an important update. I have all the pre-requisites covered and have been trying everything for hours now. I've enabled all the services, tried updating on a clean boot, deleted folders in registry, troubleshooted with both troubleshooters, etc. etc. The list goes on.

Two other optional updates also fail to install. One is related to the rollup it seems like. When I was doing my mass updating everything else worked out fine except for these 3.

Here's an article that says apparently this is a common problem for this specific update. I've done everything its said but it didnt work. Link

Microsoft support did not help. I have nowhere else to go. Help me out if you can. Thanks

Will "Dism.exe" work with the win updated files or does it replace them with the ones it had when first installed?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:52 AM PDT

I've always try to keep windows 10 up to date. If I would run "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restore health".

Will it revert back to the old state and I have to download and update everything again, or will it work with the new update files and check if they are are correct and only replace corrupt ones?
