Gaming laptop recommendation (Budget $1250/ £1000)

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:41 AM PDT

I will be going abroad for a year to study, which means leaving my PC that I have built behind in the UK, however with Borderlands 3 and Destiny Shadowkeep on the way, I really don't want to miss out , is there a laptop in this price range that will be able to play these titles at 60fps. I currently have a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming, which I hate because it is super plastic-y, thick, and the screen is garbage, so not that stoked on Dell as a brand right now.

Select between Surface Laptop 2, Acer Aspire E5, and Acer Aspire 5 Slim. Help me find the red one if possible

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:38 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    Max budget would be $1000

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Would prefer not 2in1, higher priority on battery life

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Not a deal-breaker, but would prefer on the lighter side for transport.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I do a little bit of programming in python. Was going to start some classes in web development with Django.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    Not gaming.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

    N/A

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I've narrowed my search down to the following three based on personal preference and advice I have seen posted here.

    1) Microsoft Surface Laptop 2: I really like the look of this and this seems to be a great deal based on prices I have seen on other sites. I have seen that people on this site aren't too fond of the surface line though.

    https://smile.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-Intel-Core/dp/B07HZN87JR/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

    2) Acer Aspire E5: Seems to check all the boxes for things that I want, and is on the cheaper side compared to the surface. I actually really like the red version, but haven't had any luck finding it sold anywhere, does anyone know where it can be found? Also noticed that costco has this for a little more, but comes with that sweet 4year warrenty and return policy.

    3) Acer Aspire 5 Slim: Seems to check all the boxes also. Some of the amazon reviews have me worried a bit about this one though.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and best specs for the money without sacrificing build quality. 2 in 1 is not important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd really like it to be less than 1,8kg

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13'3 to 15'6

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Whatever works. Really hope game streaming takes off.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good build quality and great screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    I want a great display and I'm currently on the fence between;

    •Razer Blade Stealth 2019, i7, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd and 150mx

    •Asus Zenbook UX433, i7, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd and 150mx

    •Asus Zenbook Pro UX480, i7, 16gb ram, 512ssd and GTX 1050 max-Q

I'm even considering a MacBook Pro because of screen quality but it's a bit over budget.

If anyone has input, suggestions or alternatives, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance.

1 thing is the yoga has thunderbolt 3 which is nice, and it's super light. The hp has the extra warranty and .7" larger screen. Also, it has a better processor i5 8265u vs i5 8250u. What are some points for each and how can I justify the extra 50 dollars spent? This is for college starting as a freshman this year.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Total budget: $1400 CAD | County: Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is very important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Light weighted and thin would be strongly preferable

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly Photo editing and programming with some light gaming

I tried the ASUS ZenBook 14" Intel Core Whiskey Lake and the the first day I used the fan was on full throttle after downloading chrome.

Gaming laptop for Japan ($2000 CAD)

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:46 PM PDT

Hi everyone, studying in Japan for a year and need a laptop to replace my old desktop. My biggest priority is a laptop that runs cool, even in warmer environments. My experience with gaming laptops in the past are that they are unreliable and practically melt themselves dead even in the most optimal conditions. Considering Japan's hot enough as it is, I really want a laptop that won't overheat.

    Here's my info:

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: $2000 CAD (Obviously the cheaper the better, and would be really happy to buy something on sale)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Only if other people can vouch for their reliability since I don't want to fuss with warranty while in Japan.

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? Build quality, performance, battery life/form factor (From most to least priority. Particularly worried about overheating.)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd rather stay away from 17" unless there is a particular good model/deal on one.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming for sure, no editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends, Dota 2, Path of Exile, mostly online multiplayer games. Maybe Borderlands 3. Might be too busy to game much but I really want the option available to me.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard is always nice especially since I don't want to buy a seperate one. Again, I'm really worried about overheating so I'd prefer a model where the keyboard doesn't get hot even in warmer environments.

Thanks again for the help already. I've done a lot of research myself already but most reviews don't include the heat of the laptop as a priority. Additionally, I'm having trouble finding a suitable model on for a good deal :P

Thanks so much to anyone who can help me. Cheers!!

Looking for a laptop for college, in the US, $1000 or under. I'm very stressed about this so any help would be appreciated!

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:10 PM PDT

Yes, another Computer Science major (I am also looking at suggestions from other posts). I need a new computer for school, I also have an iPad pro and pencil so this is really just for programming/homework, as I will be using my ipad for notes and general use.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Im in the US and I would rather not go over $1000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd actually rather NOT have 2 in 1 (not a big deal though) and battery life isn't a huge deal as I should be able to charge while doing most of my work.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? This is an important thing to me, It's dumb but I'd also like it to be nice looking ( I do NOT like how gaming laptops look).

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 to 14 inches (15 or over is just too big)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light photo editing (Lightroom mostly), and just the programs and software I'll encounter as a computer science major.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard would be nice, reliable build quality, It would be cool if I could sit outside and still see the screen but that's not a big deal.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It's recommended from my college that I have Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz or faster, but let me know if you don't think I need that and i5 would suffice (that suggestion may be more for the engineering students). I need 16GB RAM. I just want something that will get me through this degree and will work fast for my programming and studying, ie having tons of things open at once.

Should I return my laptop or stick with it?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 12:27 AM PDT

I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 730 15.6 inch laptop at Best Buy. It has the i5, 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD. I've been reading some reviews and looking around on Reddit for advice on keeping it or getting something else. I'm looking for longevity in a laptop. The screen flickering is something I've been reading about and worrying about. I'm only going to use it for college, not an engineer or coder, don't game on it and only occassionally use Ableton. I've looked at Zenbooks and the Huawei Matebook 13 D. Any advice on any system would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $700-$900 for the right specs and durability, USA * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Specs and battery life are most important. I'm indifferent on 2-in-1 and touchscreen * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not very important. Lightest would be best obviously but it's not top priority * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows or Mac as I don't know much about Linux * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Ableton Live 9 * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No gaming * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** reliable build quality * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Don't know much about upgrading parts and whatnot so out of the box is best for me. Thank you.

[Denmark] Two-fold question: looking for a VR capable setup, but also need a laptop for university as a computer science student. Powerhouse laptop vs. limited laptop + a desktop

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 11:45 PM PDT

My 5 year old ROG Asus just died, and now I'm in the need of another laptop for university as a comp sci student. Now that I'm getting a new one, I might as well get one with the capabilities I've been wanting (eg. Virtual Reality).

I've been toying with the idea of whether or not I should (A) go all in on a gaming laptop, or (B) just get one that can run SQL Manager, Visual Studio, and Blender, and then buy a desktop that can fulfill my gaming needs. Below are my requirements:

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 8,000 DKK/ $1,600CDN. Give for take
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. As long as the battery lasts 2ish hours. And best bang for your buck would probably be my best choice
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? For a gaming laptop, I've accepted it'll weigh a ton like my old ROG, so that's fine. But for option (B) I'd love an ultra light one.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but probably convert it to Linux later
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Enough to do software development: SQL Manager, visual studio, also Blender/Unity. But mostly I want it to be VR Capable
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The usual VR games: Super Hot, Beat Saber, Gorn, etc... Decent graphical settings, and most importantantly VR compatibility

Thank you guys for your help!

Razer Blade Stealth is more expensive at 1300 USD but brings a MX150 to the table plus i7-8565U + 16gb ddr4.

    Dell XPS 13 2019 costs around 1050 USD but only has i5-8265U + 8 gb DDRL3

Taking into consideration that anyways I'll be buying a eGPU setup to work with the laptop, whats would be the best buy?

Also consider that if I purchase a razer blade stealth for around 1300 usd I get a 50usd discount for the razer core X.

Thanks! any knowledge is greatly appreciatted

Looking for a laptop to do some light gaming on

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:00 PM PDT

I've been a MacBook Pro guy for a while and it's time for me to switch things up as my current laptop is slowly dying. I have a desktop for more taxing projects like photo editing, audio editing, and music composition.

    -Budget- <$1200

    -Prefer better specs vs battery

-Prefer a more portable laptop to a thicker, heavier one

    -Looking for a Windows laptop

    -15" screen

-Prefer a good build quality, but not too picky with a touch-screen, finger-print reader, etc.

Usage- light gaming (things like Civilization, Sims, Stardew, maybe some Skyrim and other older games), web browsing, Microsoft suite stuff

Like I mentioned, I have a desktop for the heavier programs, so this would just be for more casual use plus some gaming (I have a Playstation for triple A title games, so nothing that intense)

*Edit to cover the stuff in the form

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Preferably less than $850 USD, lower is better. One of the primary things I need.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care about performance as long as it isn't slow on essential programs (word processors/browsers), I just want decent battery life and 500GB+ storage.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Something portable, doesn't have to be literally Macbook Air tiers of weight/size but smaller is better.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is preferable, but if there are Macs for better value that's fine too (although those are usually damn expensive down here).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Resolution doesn't matter, but the screen should be small since the laptop is small. Tablet size and above works.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not planning on any gaming on this little portable, I'd prefer to avoid built in GPUs to cut down on price.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent keyboard, one that actually has buttons rather than a tablet cover keyboard. More than 1 USB slot would but nice but not essential if it makesnit noticably more expensive/bigger etc.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Literally just want a little, cheap laptop that I can take notes on during lectures. My current one is bulky and having issues with hardware.

Looking for a desktop replacement gaming laptop to last a few years, but have no idea what specs I should be looking for

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 09:57 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: willing to go $2000- $2500 although if I can get it for less that would be nice! living in the USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. this is a desktop replacement so I dont care about battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? unimportant

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows preferred

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

at least 17 inches, thats what my old laptop has and its been good for me

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

this will be for gaming. Im looking to play Witcher 3 but for the most part I play space strategy like Stellaris and want to play with huge galaxy settings

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-as above, Witcher 3 and Stellaris would like to play with reasonably high settings but dont need it set to ultra

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-I would like it to have a CD drive for some older programs I have, or the ability to plug in a portable CD drive

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My current laptop ivs had for over 7 years now, im looking for one that will go for the next 5 or so years, but Im not sure what weight I should be giving to the different specs.

In particular the graphics cards. Ive seen people recommending gaming laptops with GTX 1070-1080 but there's also ones with 2070-2080 and I have no idea how much better they are and If I would need it

Same thing with CPU. I dont know if I would need a 8 gen or 9 gen core. I want my laptop to last awhile but I dont know if I would need an ultra high end CPU for that, or for that matter if a 9 gen isnt worth the money to get

In regards to RAM ive heard 8GB is standardish so I figure 16 would be good, but im also seeing models with 32GB. If I want it to last a few years should I get 32? or is 16 fine? or is even 16 overkill?

At least 1TB of harddrive. Im currently using a little less than 500GB but theres a bunch of games I havent loaded because my laptop cant currently play them so I think I would need at least that much.

    Thank you in advance!
