    A very basic Laptop.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 08:32 PM PDT

Need a laptop for Writing, Watching Videos, Music, Emails, e.t.c. Might play games like League once in a while.

I hate the feeling when the laptop overheats so I want a laptop that can stay somewhat cool if I'm doing some non-intensive multitasking (like having Google Docs and Itunes on at the same time.)

Prefer a thinner laptop and comfortable keyboard.

    Budget is $250-$450

    Thanks!

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $250 to $450. U.S

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Battery Life and Minimal overheating is most important.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** The lighter and thinner the better. But not super important.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Smaller the better but not super important.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I will be using the laptop to write essays, watch shows, and listen to music. Maybe play League.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Comfortable keyboard and fast hard drive is important. The rest is not.

Need laptop for coursework and light gaming

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 04:18 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500-$600

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Batter life is not very important to me, it will always be plugged in

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important, but I'm also not interested in carrying around 20lb monster.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~14 inches or larger preferred, but not a hard requirement.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming, and Paradigm Cirrus, although I doubt that has very intensive requirements at all.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? FFXIV - I just need to to load and be able to run around, will not really be attempting any combat, almost strictly crafting.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Does not need anything special, SSD would be preferred though.

I need a rather cheap laptop for when I leave the house on weekends for buisness trips, mostly will be doing school work but also need the ability to "run" FFXIV, settings can be minimal.

In need of a laptop for gaming/drawing/light work.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:03 AM PDT

Hey, I am looking for a laptop to use for school, digital drawing, and light gaming. I will not be using it for intense and power demanding work, but I'd like better specs for gaming (details in the form).

**Total budget and country of purchase:** Budget of about $700, Canada.

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I am looking for a 2 in 1 with decent specifications for games such as the ones listed below. If a 2 in 1 with good specs is above my budget, then I would rather focus on specs first. Battery life is not as important as the other two factors.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?** It is not too relevant unless it causes issues with portability of the laptop (being too large, or being too heavy to carry around).

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I prefer Windows.

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I'm looking for portability along with everything else so a size that is probably best for that. (15" or below)

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Mostly focused on games and drawing and some general school work tasks (school work in browser).

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I will probably be playing Minecraft and some browser games. The main reason I need specs is that I will be running Fortnite for my sibling from time to time. I am fine with the FPS being between 60 or under, I will probably not be playing on extremely graphically demanding settings.

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I am mostly looking for durability as I plan to use the laptop for a good five or so years, touch screen would however be preferable for drawing. Everything else does not really matter.

I am not very knowledgeable on topics such as specifications, I apologize in advance if my replies make me sound clueless. I came here as many members of this sub seem to be knowing of many of these things. I also apologize if some of my information is too vague/not specific, again I am not too knowing on these things, I will try and respond about these the best I can. Thank you for your reply/advice if you leave one, I will try and reply ASAP.

Edits for formatting and putting in some information I forgot.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be doing game development at uni

Is the Dell XPS 2018 less prone to failure compared to laptops of similar specs?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:47 AM PDT

I've noticed it costs much more compared to similar Ultrabooks. Is this because there is higher quality control and more effort put into it's durability and is there reliable statistics to back this up? Laptop

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 vs. HP Spectre x360 (Looking for a 2 in 1 laptop for college engineering)

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:04 PM PDT

DISCLAIMER: I know there is a post about this, I already read it. Still need advice.

Total budget and country of purchase:

    US $800 - $1400

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1. Though more on this later.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important, however since I will carry the computer to college it would be nice if it were around 4.5 lbs.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I am basically indifferent, however for engineering many people have recommended me 15.6".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will probably use solidworks or other similar CAD software for engineering.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

n/a. Would be nice to game but it isn't a concern.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'm coming from a macbook, so a good touchpad would be nice. Of course, I'd like a reliable device, I don't want the hassle of returns.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am looking for a new laptop since my 2011 MacBook Pro crashes at heavy tasks such as CAD or simply by having different apps open. At the same time, I would like to have a 2 in 1 due to the possibility of writing notes on it. I have a friend who uses an iPad Pro for note taking at college and I have tried it and really liked it. That's really it when it comes to why I want a 2 in 1.

I've looked at a lot of laptops and I think that the Spectre x360 (15") and the xps 9575 both fit the criteria of a powerful 2 in 1 that will allow me to do my college tasks and take notes in it. My question is, based on insight or experience, which would fit my needs better? I've read that the Spectre is too heavy for using it for note taking (though I always have a desk to put it down*), meanwhile I've read that the xps 9575 has had many issues (take a look at the bad reviews at bestbuy https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-xps-2-in-1-15-6-4k-ultra-hd-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-vega-m-256gb-ssd-black/6212603.p?skuId=6212603)

I am also open to other options that will satisfy my needs. I really haven't had the experience of taking notes on neither of these devices, so if anyone has experience it would be nice to know if it will be similar to the iPad experience. Otherwise, maybe I should just go for a powerful ultrabook such as the xps 9560 and an iPad, though I am not sure if that path will fit my budget.

*I know that with a desk I could just take notes with the keyboard, but for classes such as math, physics and chemistry I really need that writing with a pen experience.

    Thanks a ton!

Are there docs that will help reduce the load on the computer to do the video processing?

While working I won't need major processing power as it's mostly web/excel/word. Personal use I will need some power to play a few games and or connect to pro tools to make music.

I have always been a Dell/Lenovo guy. Costco would be a plus due to the warranty.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:08 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have been looking quite a lot these past few days and I can't seem to find something that fits my need well. Every laptop I find seem to have some issue that is a turn-off such as thermal throttle / overheat issues, bad keyboard, QC issues, etc. So any help would be much appreciated.

Looking for a design laptop with a good build quality

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:43 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

1400 to 1800 USD, slightly flexible

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Better Specs for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Weight is important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Around 15" I have a MSI gs70 ands its to big to carry around to the workplace and work-sites

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do a lot of CAD, GIS, Video editing, 3D modeling and Rendering. The programs I mostly use are, RHINO, Premiere Pro, Arcmap, Vray render Photoshop, etc

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not a gamer

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would like a reliable laptop, ideally a metal frame laptop, even better if its machined.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Would like to have 3 to 4 USB ports, a Ethernet port and HDMI port. I do a lot of graphic design and rendering freelance work for architecture and landscape architecture firms.

My current laptop is a msi gs70 and even though it has a metal body, the screw threads are fixed unto plastic and they have been cracking with my constant use. The bottom lid has some gaps where the screws have fallen away. A Better laptop chassis is a plus.

I dont know a lot about specs and but I been watching the Gigabyte Aero 15 and the Razer Blade 15. I am concerned about its appearance and noise, I am constantly pulling the laptop in conference rooms and dont want to cause any distraction.

(~$650, Europe) Pre-owned laptop for music production, light photoshop

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 04:30 AM PDT

Hi all! I'm moving abroad for college this year so I'm looking for something (hopefully cheap) that's fairly decent for music production (mostly using Massive, Battery, occasionally some light Kontakt libraries). Up until now I've been using a 2012 HP elitebook with a second gen i5 so almost anything would be an upgrade at this stage, haha. I'm a bit of an environmental nut so I'd really prefer the machine to be pre-owned or refurbished as opposed to new. I'm thinking somewhere between 5th-8th gen (or amd equivalent) refurbished if that's feasible

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My budget tops out at about $650 (though would love to spend less if there's something sufficient lol) will be moving between Ireland and the UK so buying from somewhere in Europe is preferable

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm not too fussy -- my laptop at the moment has about 1 hour of battery life from 100% so anything is an upgrade at this stage

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really a concern ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Will probably using windows, but OS doesn't have to be included (I have a few windows keys lying around)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Would be using in college so would prefer it to be on the smaller end -- maybe 15/16 inch maximum?

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. In addition to music stuff, I'll also be doing some very light photoshop (posters for college events - text and images, real barebones stuff)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I've resigned myself to the fact that I won't get a decent gaming machine at this price point so I don't really care, as long as it's decent for the productivity stuff I mentioned above I don't really mind tbh !!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would love a decent keyboard and build quality but I totally understand if that's not really feasible at this price haha

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this! Would really appreciate any suggestions

Need help! Best gaming laptop for CAD $1800 - $2800

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 12:57 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Canada $1800 - $3000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      Best specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important, just don't want a cheesy look

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Would like 17" but not an issue

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Just gaming and online schooling, mostly very basic schooling

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Overwatch, Apex Legends, WoW, also want to be able to play AAA games without sacrificing settings and FPS. FPS of over 60 is a must

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would like a good overall laptop. Finger print reader not needed

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm buying a gaming laptop in the next two days and I am still very unsure of what the best options are.

I have done extensive research but am still confused by all the differing opinions on each laptop!

    I'm going to school online for cannabis production and other than that I'll be using it to game titles like;

-Overwatch -Apex Legends -League Of Legends -( Maybe WoW again )

I want the best experience I can get for these games and I would like to also be able to play games that demand more. ( Metro Exodus type graphics )

I've been really interested in the RAZER BLADE 15 but i have heard lots of different opinions on them. I LOVE the look of them.

The ALIENWARE AREA 51M would be awesome to but I think it might be out of my price range.

The PREDATOR TRITON 500 also looks amazing but I think I will have to order one online if I could even find one.

Let me know anything you might find useful as the time is ticking down and I need to make a choice ASAP!

    Thanks a ton!

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** windows 10

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6"

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** would avoid touch screen due to higher price, i'll be using a mouse most of the time so touchpad is not very important, needs at least 2 usb ports

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** making this second post as I am now able to spend up to £1000 - this was my old post

I've been looking into laptops for months now and these are probably the best I could find:

Need help choosing a laptop for school.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:17 PM PDT

So this week I'm going to be purchasing a laptop for school, and I was looking to get some input or suggestions from this subreddit. This laptop will pretty much only be used for schoolwork and light internet use. I would really just like a model that is fairly priced, has a nice look/high build quality (doesn't feel cheaply made), and can run basic applications quickly without issues. Also would like it to have a decent looking display. I'd say my total budget is $500 with some flexibility, but spending less would obviously be preferred if there is a laptop that fits my needs at a lower price. I live in NJ, USA and I will be purchasing the laptop at my local microcenter (Paterson NJ location) or Best Buy if I find that they have a better option for me. I would appreciate any links to recommended laptops to come from one of these merchants, unless it's significantly cheaper from a different store.

    Thanks!

Advice on improving battery life of HP omen laptops or any laptop in general?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:42 AM PDT

I just bought HP omen with rtx 2060. It's a nice laptop but the battery doesn't last more than 3 to 3:30 hours on average. Is there any way I can improve or push that. Keep in mind that it lasted 3 hours on almost minimum brightness and battery saver mode.

    Thank you!

Light gaming mostly school work - flexible $1000 usd

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:41 AM PDT

Right now I have a Lenovo legion y530 (I think — it has an i7-8750h and a 1050ti -I think. It works well but it's a little bulky. I'm wondering if a razer would show any performance difference in terms of games like rocket league, Minecraft, csgo and some other graphically lenient games. I got mine open-box from Best Buy so it was pretty cheap like $700. Let me know if there's any other laptops that I might not know about that are good for programming and light gaming around this price point. Thanks in advance.

    Razer laptop options

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:20 AM PDT

I'm looking at getting a Razer Blade 15 and came across this deal for $2,359 AUD (about $1600USD)

    https://www.centrecom.com.au/razer-blade-156-144hz-core-i7-8750h-gaming-laptop

It is the 8th gen 1060 model but its the cheapest I can find, does anyone know of any cheaper brand new Razer Blade 15s in Australia? If so I'd appreciate you letting me know because I'm close to pulling the trigger on this deal. Let me know what you think about the Blade 15 also, I've explored other options and tried out many laptops in store but the trackpad, keyboard, aluminium design, and overall look have won me over in every aspect compared to the others I've tried, that along with the considerable power of these laptops especially for the form factor makes it almost impossible for me to consider anything else but I'd still love to hear what you think/recommend.

The only downside is the price. That's why I'm still a little on the fence and would appreciate it if someone could sell me on another laptop with similar power and form factor but much cheaper as that's the general consensus I've seen about the Blades (that they're overpriced af)

To give a little context I'm using this mostly for university but also some light gaming, for the time being, I already have a very powerful gaming PC but I want the option to, later on, switch to an eGPU ultrabook combo, that's why I'm pre-emptively looking for something with such power even though its not completely necessary at this point. This may be a very niche™ use case but I'm quite keen on this laptop so tell me what you guys think.

Laptop for streaming movies, editing photos (lightroom) and browsing internet. Budget ~$1000

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:14 PM PDT

I'm looking for a new laptop to edit photos, stream TV/movies and browse the internet with.

My requirements would be Windows OS, usb-c port (to be used with the newer Dell dock) an HDMI or display port to occasionally connect to my TV, both Lan and wifi connections and enough processing power to edit photos with lightroom. No gaming, CAD, video editing or anything that requires a ton of power.

I prefer lightweight, slim designs but am open to anything except bulky laptops like the Alienware stuff. The laptop will see light use (2-3 times per week max)

My budget is around $1k or so but I'm flexible and prefer something that doesn't look or feel cheaply made.

I haven't purchased a computer in over 10 years so I'm a bit overwhelmed right now and could really use a few good suggestions to help point me in the right direction.

What's the best laptop I can get for Computer Engineering and Moderate Gaming for around $700-900?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $700-$900 or P50,000 pesos, Philippines *

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Mix of best specs and solid battery life *

How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, I will be bringing it about in college so hopefully something not too thick and heavy *

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows *

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 inches *

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Moderate gaming and some 3d modelling and computer aided drafting *

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CSGO (Competitive settings) - 100+fps Apex (Competitive Settings) - 80+fps PUBG (Competitive Settings) - 80+fps In general triple A titles above 60fps *

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not particular, as long as no major part (keyboard, touchpad, display, etc) is terrible *

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I live in the Philippines, and pricing is more expensive here. A $1000 laptop sold in the US equals to about $1800 here in the Philippines, thus my smaller budget. Im looking for suggestions for a hopefully thin laptop that can last 5-7 hrs. As long as the keyboard and touchpad aren't dead terrible, that's fine by me! Lastly, I hope that the screen's brightness and accuracy wont be bad as well. Maybe greater than 260-270 nits and higher than 68% srgb and 60% ntsc. *

    Thanks for the help!
