Looking for a laptop for the kids to play modded minecraft, need advice. (15"-ish screen, USA, under $600)

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 11:47 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

      • Under $600, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      • Not sure. Want something that will run modded minecraft and Stardew Valley.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      • Weight and thinness don't matter. These laptops won't be carried around.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      • Windows 10 Home preferably.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      • around 15 inches seems to be common...
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      • No CAD or video editing, just basic gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      • Minecraft Forge 1.12.2 with mods - at least 60fps
      • Stardew Valley - at least 60fps
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      • Just the basics.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      • My wife and I are running Minecraft Forge 1.12.2 on our computers and are connecting to a hosted server with about 76 mods including Optifine. No fancy shaders, average graphics.
      • We want the kids to be able to play on the server as well. They will also probably play Stardew Valley or similar games. Nothing requiring a lot of CPU or video horsepower. Probably Minecraft will be the most demanding due to the mods.
      • After searching this subreddit, Google, and a bunch of other sites, we were considering the Acer Aspire 5 which seems to be a step up from the commonly recommended Acer Aspire E15 with the exception of the E15 having a discreet graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM ) vs the on-board Intel UHD Graphics 620.
    • What I would like to ask for advice on:

      • Would you recommend either of these 2 laptops: Acer Aspire 5, Acer Aspire E15
      • Any pros/cons you might think of given the above information?
      • Is there anything else you would recommend instead?
      • If you have played Minecraft Forge with similar specs and what was your experience (definitely not asking for advice on optimizing minecraft or any support or anything like that though... just wanted some anecdotal feedback if at all possible. ;-) )

I really want to thank everyone in advance for any and all feedback, advice, and information you can provide!

Help me choose between the HP Spectre x360 13" and the Lenovo Yoga c930 14"

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 06:43 PM PDT

Hi! I'm retiring an old MacBook Pro and an old Samsung Tablet and have decided to venture into the world of 2 in 1 machines so I can have a bit of both. I've read a lot of reviews and for my use (streaming, surfing, reading, amateur audio recording, Office work, etc) these seem like the best of the bunch. I'm in the US and cost is not a major concern, thankfully. I am having a hard time deciding between the two. Any and all opinions would be very helpful. I'm firmly on the fence.

Looking for a thin and light with good battery to dock with an eGPU

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 12:05 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

USA, $1500 (flexible, though. trying to do some sort of financing deal for around $100 a month)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

A 2-in-1 would be nice since I do like taking notes on my current surface pro 4, which I would probably get rid of for extra cash. Most important is good battery life, 8+ hours doing normal tasks for sure

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important. I do want it to have a good looking, professional aesthetic

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 sounds like a good sweet spot but this is flexible

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am a game developer/programmer and gamer, but I am planning on getting an eGPU, so I would rather not have a GPU in the laptop to maximize battery life. Also recent U-series i7 processor should be good for my needs

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

The keyboard needs to be pretty good when compared to other thin and lights

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Going into my last year of college (but still undecided about future grad school), so while 2-in-1 factor isn't required, it's strongly preferred. I had been looking at the MSI PS63 with gtx 1650, but it doesn't have thunderbolt 3 which really does upset me if I wanted to increase my graphics power in two or three years.

But if there exists a laptop that's thin, gets 8+ hours of battery, has a gtx 1650, and thunderbolt 3, point me there haha

    College/Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 01:15 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    $1200 USD, USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life and best specs for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I prefer light and thin since I'll be carrying it a lot, but I know I probably won't get under 5 lbs.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be using Visual Studio Code and other programming software, possibly some video editing, and some light gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

GTA V is the most demanding game I'll play, 100 fps on medium or higher is the goal.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch-screen)?

500GB+ SSD, 120Hz+ screen, 16GB RAM, backlit keyboard all required. If I can get a hard drive of any capacity in addition to the SSD it'd be a huge bonus.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So far I've found the Lenovo LEGION Y545 and 2019 ASUS ROG G531GT as possible matches. What do you think of those two and are there any other fits?

    Laptop for work/studies/digital art

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 03:05 AM PDT

I'm planning to move to Japan for 1-2 years and won't bring my desktop, so I need a laptop that can do a bit of everything. I'm primarily a writer, but also dip into digital art and video editing on the regular.

Total budget and country of purchase:

    $1100-$1700, buying in Norway

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specs for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd like something I can carry around.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use Photoshop regularly with a drawing tablet

    Premiere occasionally

    Casual gamer

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play The Sims 4 a lot + Hearthstone, Warframe, and some visual novels. Don't need to play on highest settings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch-screen)?

    N/A

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I like gaming, but am willing to drop them for something portable.

The guy at the electronics store recommended me Huawei Matebook 13, which I thought was a bit odd as it only has 8 GB. I might have misunderstood but I thought 16GB is recommended for Photoshop and Premiere?

My friend got an Asus ZenBook last year that she uses for light gaming and university studies, I guess I'm looking for something similar.

Need laptop for school that has the following:

    Intel Core i7 Processor

    16 GB Ram

    512 SSD

It would be nice if it was: 2 in 1 and had a 15-16 inch screen.

Also these are my school recommendations so I would like to know if a 512 SSD has an advantage over a 1 TB. Or if SSD give some special advantage over HDD. Are there any that are less than 900 after tax. Also that have protection plans as well that arent too expensive

Too much choice, in need of suggestions!

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 11:39 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

I'm in the UK and my budget is flexible. I'd say I'm looking at the £700/800 range, although for the right machine I could probably do anything up to around £1200

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Really not fussed about form factor, 2-in-1's have always seemed a bit gimmicky to me but I've never owned or used one so I'm open to suggestions.

Battery life isn't a major issue as I'll mostly be using the laptop at home, although it's nice not being tethered to a power outlet!

Ideally I'd like a high spec - not for practical use (I don't do any picture or video editing etc, but I do plenty of word processing and media viewing and also some light gaming) but, if I'm being totally honest, I'm willing to pay for a good spec in order to have a nice user experience (no slowdown, no lagging when scrolling, fast loading times, smooth and easy video watching etc). Rather arbitrarily I've been looking at 8GB RAM and an i5 8th gen (or equivalent) as a minimum.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Weight not an issue, although the thinner the better (purely from an aesthetic point of view).

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Ideally Windows 10, although no problem using MacOS either.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Some light gaming (Football Manager and other such games, I have a One X for the gaming so doesn't need to run the latest FPS's or anything!)

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Medium settings for any game would be fine, FPS not a huge concern.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

I think this is probably my most important category: some background...in 2012 when I finished university and got a job I still lived with my parents, so was absolutely swimming in cash. With my first wage I went out and bought a Macbook Pro Retina. It's served me well for the last 7 years but is sadly nearing the end (the battery has been spent, speakers are busted and some pixels beginning to die in the screen).

Say what you like about Apple (and I know not everyone is a fan) but their design and build quality is excellent - I'm basically looking for an equivalent. I like the luxury of the solid aluminium chassis and the premium feel of the keyboard and trackpad. I also want an equivalent of the retina display, whether that's a high quality FHD or a 4K display.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Basically, I'm looking for a reasonably powered laptop with a glorious display and a premium build. Good sound, great picture, solid and premium feel and a nice, smooth user experience are my main priorities, although the bigger the spec, the better (I've arbitrarily decided that 8GB RAM and an i5 or equivalent are the minimum requirements!). I've spent a lot of time looking and seem to settle on a different laptop each time - there's just too much choice, especially for somebody not overly tech savvy. Dell XPS 13, Huawei Matebook 13 and Lenovo Ideapad 720s are three examples of laptops I've looked at in length.

Hope I've formatted this correctly and thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Is this HP Pavilion Power 17-ab401 4JY32EA a good buy?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 02:54 AM PDT

Hello guys, I am from Czech Republic and I am thinking about buy a HP Pavilion Power 17-ab401 4JY32EA which costs 965 USD here in Czech Republic. looking for a laptop for gaming(good performance and less heat up) as well as normal use (keyboard friendly, easy portable, good battery, good screen display colors for content creation etc)

I have come across these under my budget:-

HP Omen and G7are with Gtx1060 G5 and Lenovo Legion Y530 are with 1050ti and Y530 is without SSD.

Other specs are all same and common like i7 8th with 4.1 Turbo Ghz etc.

Games i would be playing sometimes includes GTA 5, CSGO, Battlefield3 etc

Can't decide because of their mixed positive and negative reviews!

Please share your suggestion and experience.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1150 , Pakistan

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Gaming + Normal Use

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Should be easily portable and less heatup issues

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CSGO , Battlefield3 , CSS, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, Brackets and Atom

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Atleast above 60 in Ultra

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Friendly keyboard for fast typing.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Should be perfect for 2 in 1 use.

    Looking for 14" , 16GB programming laptop

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 01:50 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Preferably lower but around 1500€, Ireland/Lithuania

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is important and at least 16GB of ram or upgradable. Decent screen brightness too.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as it's under 2.5Kg It's fine

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. No requirements, will probably be windows dual booting linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" screen would be the best

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly just many tabs of chrome, visual studio code and some IDE'S.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Hope to just play cs:go or overwatch at minimum and 60fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, good screen brightness, not loud.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I did buy a used razer blade 15.6" advanced 2018 for (€1500), but it was way too loud at idle moments, I'm not sure if that was a problem with the laptop but it made me realise I don't need a gaming laptop and would like something less power intense. I was looking at the Asus ux433, or msi ps42 but was wondering if there was anything cheaper out there.

Need a laptop as a Computer Science student and for some light gaming. I would like it to run UE4 though at least decently. Also Planet Coaster without chugging. My budget is 750.

Dell xps 13 or macbook pro?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 02:58 PM PDT

I bought a 2017 base model macbook pro but am in the return period and saw a deal for a 2018 xps 13 with 256gb storage and 8th gen i5 for 980 USD

My only concern is I've had issues with noise and heating with dell xps in the past.

People who own this version, does it heat up a lot? Does it make noise when normal web browsing? I want my computer to be completely silent
