Is 50c on an i5 4200U on idle normal? Posted: 06 Jul 2019 12:38 PM PDT My laptop is fairly old Recently I noticed that my laptop temp was going at 50C at idle and going as far as around the upper 80s under load, on certain occasions it would go up to 90. Is this something I should be very worried about? If this is something really bad, what should I do? [link] [comments]

I need some help and advice... Posted: 06 Jul 2019 12:33 PM PDT Hey guys/girls. I need your help. But first thanks for taking the time to read this... Ok, My Dad promised me to buy me a new laptop before the the start of October 2019 (Because that is when he gets a bonus) Now his budget for the laptop is unknown, because he does not talk about it, and if I nag him to much, He gets very irritated. (We live in South Africa). Now I guess my dad's budget is around 6000ZAR ($450-500) But I have a bit more than 2000ZAR in my Savings (which is not much). So I guess our budget is 7000ZAR ($550) but can stretch to 8000ZAR ($600) Now the laptop is for mostly Schoolwork, document editing, web browsing and some slight gaming. (RCT2 and other pixelated games) My dad is heavily against gaming, so I don't game much, but if I can, I will) My dad hates it if you nag him, so I try my best not to. My dad loves this one computer shop in town, and buys everything computer related there. He is against online shopping, and I am against walking into a shop (Like Game) and just buy a laptop without doing research. The PC shop my dad loves so much is not bad, they are very professional, and I wouldn't mind buying my laptop there. My dad is completely clueless about computer specs, where I love to do research and know almost everything. He thinks a 4000ZAR ($350) laptop will do the same as a 10000ZAR ($800) laptop. (This is completely wrong of course). At this PC shop, you can't walk in, say you want this laptop (name and model) and walk out with it. They don't have all the laptops and can't get every laptop and laptop model. So we need to walk in, say what we want to have, wait approximately a week, and go and get the laptop.(Which I'm fine with) I need help to convince my dad that the more expensive a laptop is, the better performance, build quality ect. it will have. But he does not understand that. And also, that I need a good laptop to last me a long while, without problems. (This one needs to last at least 4 years!). Also that I need the best one that we can afford. My dad won't let me build my own PC because I am to inexperienced according to him. (Believe me, I've tried) Can anyone please give me advice on what I should do, and what I shouldn't do. (Anything welcome) Thanks for your time, and help. Please enjoy the rest of your day/night (Also, you don't have to suggest laptops, because the PC shop, will provide one, and the shop probably won't have it) [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jul 2019 12:20 PM PDT I did a clean install, changed thermal paste, and changed the DVD player with an ssd on my asus x550vx. Everything seems working, besides the fan. Is there possibly a driver issue or something like that? I downloaded speedfan and the cpu fan speed says a thing like 496459 rpm or so, of course the fan is not moving. I checked the pin twice, and everything else, but I don't see anything. I'm new to those kind of things, even the dumbest advice is well accepted. What could the issue be? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jul 2019 08:19 AM PDT Going into high school this fall and therefore I need to buy a laptop. I want to do more with it than just productivity and web surfing. I would like it to be capable of basic video editing, graphic design, gaming or whatever else I may like to try. In addition to that, it will need to last throughout a school day and be portable. I've narrowed it down to either an XPS model or a Mac. I could go either way on screen size and resolution. I'd obviously like better resolution but that may decrease battery life, which I simply can't sacrifice. I have a budget of $1500, but I may be able to squeak that if there's a good enough reason. If I were to buy a Mac I would probably buy a $1700 configuration. please leave your opinions and thank you in advance. Also, I'm open for suggestions about laptops besides the ones mentioned above. very high end gaming laptop - low fps Posted: 06 Jul 2019 08:16 AM PDT Specs:
I've already done all the usual solutions to fixing low fps on gaming laptops such as making sure battery is plugged in, battery setting is set to performance and use High performance Nvidia processor in Nvidia control pannel. I launched csgo and opened task manager on the side, it does shows that it is using 100% of both cpu and gpu. The temps of the laptop while running csgo is gpu: 59-63 C, cpu 60-65 C. Csgo is running around 50-60 frames but when I die it jumps to 200 for a second. League of legends being a game that doesn't require good specs only runs at around 100 fps. At this point I really don't know what's causing the laptop to perform this poorly. Any help is appreciated, thank you. [link] [comments]

Trying to decide what to get: dell precision m4800, lenovo thinkpad w540, or hP Zbook 15. Posted: 06 Jul 2019 08:11 AM PDT I've been a Dell Latitude and Precision user for five years now. I'm willing to try a different brand. Mainly HP or Lenovo. I've asked my friends what they recommend, and most recommended me the HP Zbook. I was set on getting it, but then I took a double take, saw that both the ZBook and the ThinkPad's CPU/GPU shares a single fan. Whereas the Precision, both the CPU and GPU both has its own dedicated fan. I'm concerned about the thermals as I live in a tropical country, and my room temperature can reach around 95F all year round. I plan on pushing this laptop, since I'll be editing 1080p/60 footage on it. For those has the HP, Lenovo, or both. How's your laptop holding up? All of the laptops I plan to buy would have an 4900MQ, 32GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, either an nVidia Quadro or AMD FirePro. Should I stick with Dell or should I give the other two brands a try? Aside from the thermals, what laptops do you guys recommend out of the three? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Moving OS from HDD to SSD whilst keeping data on the former: how do I do it? Posted: 06 Jul 2019 05:05 AM PDT So I recently bought an SSD to upgrade my laptop with. The SSD is a Corsair MP510 (480 GB) and my laptop is an MSI GL62 7QF-1672UK with a 1 TB hard drive already installed (leaving the M.2 slot free). Currently, I have Windows 10 installed on the hard drive, along with all my documents/applications. I would like to move the OS to the SSD, whilst also keeping the HDD plugged in so I can access/transfer certain files at will. I'm not looking to completely clone the hard drive. So how would I go about doing this? I would guess that the steps are roughly as follows: 1) Create Windows 10 installation media. 2) Remove HDD, plug in SSD, and install Windows 10. 3) Plug HDD back in and make sure that the BIOS is set to load the new OS. Are there any problems that may arise by having an "inactive" OS also installed, or through any of these steps? [link] [comments]

Are System76 Laptops Worth It? Posted: 06 Jul 2019 10:25 AM PDT I am moving to the US in a couple of months for my PhD and wanted to buy a laptop. My primary use would be using it for Programming (more specifically Systems Programming), and run small Machine Learning Algorithms. I wanted to know about System76 since they come with Linux Pre-Installed and not Windows. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jul 2019 09:58 AM PDT One that is height adjustable and fits a 17.3 inch laptop. Are there ones in this range known to be very powerful. Have tried this one but found it not that effective. https://www.amazon.ca/Cooler-Master-Storm-SF-17-Ergonomic/dp/B00E5AEITU There seem to be several in the $100+ range but wondering how effective they are as they all seem to have RPM values that aren't especially high. Is there a gaming laptop similar to the MacBook air? Posted: 06 Jul 2019 09:56 AM PDT Right now I've been searching for a good gaming laptop that's similar looking to the MacBook air. I need a laptop that's fast, 4k resolution, good temp, lots of storage space, and is light and easy to carry. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jul 2019 08:05 AM PDT Hey, I'm looking for a portable work machine for high end VR game-development in Unreal Engine, additionally, it will also be used for HLSL GPU-experiments and light esport gaming, mostly CSGO. It will be used mostly on the go since I have my stationary at home, so as lightweight as possible and a slim look is a preference, but not a total necessity. I want an IPS-panel with 144-240hz refresh rate and between 15 - 17" of size. I realize you cant get away with a quiet laptop with these specs, but the quiter, the better of course. Don't need a webcam, it will never be used. I've personally looked at either the Razer Blade 2019 15" or the Blade Advanced 17", but I'd like a second oppinion, thanks for any advice! Budget, max: €3200 [link] [comments]

Laptops with displays as good as the macbook's retina display? Posted: 06 Jul 2019 08:01 AM PDT Hey guys, I'm looking for buying a new laptop. I'll be mostly using my laptop for movies/series, web surfing and playing games like sims 4, gta 5...so I'm looking for a laptop with a beautiful display :) I really like the macbook's screens but they are way too expensive and are not good for gaming. Also I'm looking for 15 inch display, but at the same time not very bulky laptop, because I travel a lot and I need it to be portable. Any recommendations? [link] [comments]
Laptops with reasonable temperatures Posted: 06 Jul 2019 07:49 AM PDT I've been looking into getting a new laptop. The models I've been mostly looking at are Lenovo Legion Y530, Dell G3, Acer Nitro 5 and HP Pavilion Gaming 15, all with a Geforce 1050 (Ti or not) GPU and an i5 8300H CPU. The thing is, I keep seeing people complain about high temperatures for ALL these laptops. If I want a laptop in a similar price range to these, do I just have to accept that the laptop will have temperature issues? After dealing with high temperatures on my current laptop, and having to tab out of a game all the time to make sure that they aren't too high so that the laptop doesn't shut down, I am very paranoid about getting burnt once again. Laptop doesn't turn on anymore Posted: 06 Jul 2019 07:28 AM PDT Hello, this is my first post on this subreddit. I hope you can help me out with my problem. About two months ago my laptop just turned off by himself and didn't want to start anymore. When I plug it on the battery charger and press the turning on button the display stays black even if I connect it to an external monitor. The keyboard backlight and the battery charging led are lighting, but I can't hear any fan noises. Does somebody know what I can do or had similar problems with his/hers laptop? Looking for laptop that's great for streaming, video editing, etc. Posted: 05 Jul 2019 10:35 PM PDT Hey all! I'm looking to buy a laptop that can handle processing video projects that have been edited, for streaming, and possibly gaming (more than likely). I know next to nothing when it comes to laptops for this kind of stuff. I will save up for whatever I need as long as it's a laptop that will last me, and has some decent warranty with it. I currently use an Alienware laptop but its not mine, that one seems to work pretty well. I just want a laptop of my own now! I'd like if you could list specifications and why it should or should not have certain things in your explanation. I love learning, so lay it on me, I'll use this when I go to actually browse and purchase. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jul 2019 04:56 AM PDT If anyone else has experience with the same model please let me know if mine is an isolated case. Fire Strike Score - Between 3300 and 4800 Time Spy Score - Between 1550 and 1800 Are these acceptable scores? It appears to be thermal throttling at 85 degrees afaik. Have undervolted to -0.050V using XTU but didn't find any noticeable difference. Battery Settings are set for performance. Games start out smoothly at high settings. Then after a while, it all goes downhill with bad stuttering. Reducing the graphics settings doesn't help either. Even games like Far Cry 3 and Borderlands 2. [link] [comments]
Do external SSDs really improve load times? Posted: 05 Jul 2019 06:25 PM PDT I honestly know barely anything about computers, but I've heard internals definitely do. I have a laptop so I'm not going to mess with it. Ik most externals are relatively cheap. Is it worth it? Just in case, it's an HP Pavilion. Quad i5, 1tb hhd, Intel integrated graphics, 12gb RAM. Bought it as a general use, but it does pretty good for gaming (by my standards) Any info is much appreciated, thanks [link] [comments] |
