My home 5ghz network has suddenly become unreliable, unsure where else to ask for help! Posted: 01 Jul 2019 03:58 PM PDT I've had a TP-Link Archer C1200 v2.0 router running my home network for at least the last 2 years. It has never given me a single problem. All of the sudden, the 5ghz network has become very spotty and I cannot figure out what is wrong. I've tried restarting the modem and router, as well as making sure everything is fully updated. I have determined that ethernet connections and the 2ghz network from the router are functioning as expected. It appears as though the 5ghz will broadcast as normal for some period of time, and then randomly stop broadcasting. The network comes back up after a router restart or after I just wait a couple minutes. Is this a sign of the router needing to be replaced? Could something else be going on that I haven't considered? Any help is appreciated!! [link] [comments] |
Thoughts on proposed networking setup Posted: 01 Jul 2019 06:32 AM PDT Here's the situation: my grandmother lives about 400 feet away up the hill from my parent's home and they want to beam my grandmother's LAN from my grandmother's home to my parent's home. My idea was to run a line from my grandmother's router to a Ubiquiti Litebeam Gen 2 antenna, beam the internet to an identical antenna at my parent's house, then run the line into a Netgear R7000 router in AP mode at my parent's house. Thoughts? A more graphical example is below: HOST Grandmother modem/router combo > CAT5e > POE injector > Ubiquiti Litebeam Gen 2 ~~~ transmission over 400 feet ~~~ NODE Ubuiquiti Litebeam Gen 2 > CAT5e > POE Injector (pointing to litebeam) > R7000 in AP mode > ~wifi signal for home~ Basically, will the Litebeam gen2 transmit over 400 feet and do I need any additional equipment to make sure that this all works properly? Thanks in advance for the help. EDIT 01: Thanks everyone for the help! Based on u/kershnerta's advice, we went with the Nanobeam 5AC instead of the Litebeam Gen2. The parental units were keen to future-proof the setup as much as possible. I'll post an update when we get it all installed and tested. Should be fun! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2019 06:44 PM PDT I'm trying to get wifi on my dock, and had a contractor put in conduit while he had the trench open for power. I'm under the impression that most people use flexible conduit for outdoor runs, but he used hard pvc piping, which I didn't find out until today (I don't live on the property full time). Originally I was going to run ethernet to the dock like I did in the house, but my friend suggested I run fiber incase of lightening. I've bought a 300ft outdoor pre-terminated os2 fiber line to pull to the dock, but I was expected flexible tubing so the bends wouldn't be too tight. With the hard piping, do you guys have any suggestions on pulling around the two 90 degree corners? They're at the ends, so maybe I can dig them up and attach flex tubes to the end to ease the conduit out. Any ideas would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2019 07:54 PM PDT Long time lurker. Super random question but I feel like it's important to know the answer for everyone here. So if the world was hit by some EMP, atomic bomb, catastrophe, etc. and assuming you still had power, and 30 x 1000' rolls of Cat6, how would you create an emergency LAN/WAN to network your neighborhood or even your city?
How would you do it? I'd love to hear! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2019 07:49 PM PDT I'm wanting to get around Verizon's throttling after 20gb usage. I have seen where you can plug your sim card into a router. I'm really down for any solution even if I have to purchase another line on my plan. Please lmk in detail what options I would have. [link] [comments] |
Netgear AC1900 / Model C7000v2 downstream light blinking and upstream light is AMBER Posted: 01 Jul 2019 07:37 PM PDT Title says it all except that the connection speed has been crippled a good bit, ~90 to 100 Mbps down to about ~30 Mbps down, and the connection has completely dropped out last night and came on again today. I looked at the manual for it which can be found here on page 9 which shows the front panel LED diagram as well as status based descriptions, none of which mention an amber status for the downstream light. I've also checked chapter 10, page 108 for troubleshooting LEDs and none of them seem to mention it either. Some quick google searches have shown that it could potentially be that my UpStream or 'US' power is too high and that I may need to call a technician to my home. I'd rather avoid doing that as my local ISP, local Comcast office, has terrible technical support and the last time they did 'troubleshooting' on my network they suggested buying an entirely new modem/router. Any help will be very appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2019 07:28 PM PDT Hey guys so I currently have a NETGEAR C3700 Router. Me and my brother game quite a bit (me on my PC and him on his PS4) we tend to lag when we're both playing on the same time. Another thing that doesn't help is I'm playing on wifi. SIDE NOTE the router is in my parents room which is 2 rooms away from mine while my brothers PS4 is in my parents room so he doesn't really have that problem. I'm the one with the problem. in my room I have the camera system to my house which is connected via Ethernet cable. (A Ethernet cable going through the attic and comes down to my room. To connect to the camera system). I would like to add a wifi router between the camera system and the router in my parents room. So like this there will be a wifi router in my room so I will get better wifi connection in my room overall not just for gaming on my PC. And my brother will have his own router to connect to and I will have mine. This has been a problem for a while and I decided I had to do smth. (Might I add my dad does not want to switch out the old router the Netgear c3700) I have a budget of 70 dollars or less. Also don't know what speeds I really need if I need 1200MBPS or more.. also would like MU-MIMO for future proofing myself in a way . New to this so not sure and need y'all's advice. Thank you [link] [comments] |
2 AP's - different or same SSID's for better handoff? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 06:44 PM PDT I just set up a second router in bridge mode to act as a 2nd AP for better coverage on the far end opposite of my main router. Is it better to set the SSID for the 2nd AP the same as the main network or under a different SSID? A single SSID would be cleaner looking but I'm not too sure about how smart devices are at hand-off. Under a single SSID, would the user device be smart enough to know to connect to the 2nd network if the signal from the main router is too weak? And on the contrary, with 2 SSID's, will the user device be smart enough to hand-off an unreliable (but not dead) connection in favor of the stronger one? The 2 AP's have a sort of overlap of coverage which adds to my confusion in all of this. [link] [comments] |
I made a site to share some knowledge about pfSense firewalls with not-so-techie people. Posted: 01 Jul 2019 06:43 PM PDT Two of my most favourite past times are networking and animation, and recently the request from a friend to configure him a firewall for his home connection sparked the idea to create https://the-cloud-academy.com/ Spent a large part of last week on writing scripts and rendering the little geek dude. The page contains a bunch of short videos with transcripts to explain the basic of hardware-based firewalling. At this stage, I have around 15 videos up there. Another 5 are in the pipeline. If I will continue with that project will mostly depend on feedback I get. So if you have a few minutes to spare, please have a look at my site and drop me a comment below! [link] [comments] |
Why Would a Macbook Connect to Wifi Network and an iPhone Struggles? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:13 PM PDT I am staying in an AirBnB. The 1 bedroom unit I am in is next to a main house where the owner lives. For wifi, there is a small Netgear booster plugged into the wall. I assume it gets its internet connection ultimately from the main house. I can connect to it with a Mac Laptop running Mojave, and the connection is decent. When I attempt to connect to it with an iPhone or iPad, sometimes I can connect and other times I can't. When I do connect the connection often drops. Basically our iPhones and iPad don't work with this router. Which is a drag since cell service is spotty at this location on Cape Cod. I'm thinking that the wifi router is older and somehow iPhones don't connect to it too well. What would explain a 2015 Macbook having a decent wifi connection and an iPhone 8 having a lousy one? I have complained to the owner who seems to not know much at all about this. He called Comcast, his provider, who suggested he install a new booster. Does that make any sense? Also, when I attempt to connect via iPhone, I need to type in the name of the network and also pick the type of security. I've tried WPA, WPA2, and WEP. WPA2 seems to be the one protocol that sometimes works and allows the iPhone to log on. [link] [comments] |
Accessing server from public ip Posted: 01 Jul 2019 05:39 PM PDT Hello all, So the problem I am having is that for the last 3 years my ISP has given me a public IP address, therefore I was able to access my server for say, RDP on port 3389. I did this using the public IP and a dynamic dns. I recently moved and now my ISP will not give me a public ip address, for some reason. The internet I receive comes from the apartment complex, for free, so I am trying to make this work. My question is, is there a way to access my server to RDP when all i know is the public ip information I can find on google. I have found a lot of information regarding DNS and NAT, but am not really sure what to do. Also, I was wondering if there would be something I could host in the cloud that would be some sort of a relay. I hope I am clarifying the problem well enough. Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much. [link] [comments] |
Suggestions for purchasing a router that will connect to a ISP router/modem combo in bridge mode Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:56 PM PDT Mosty title. We are finally switching from the ISP's modem/router combo. Sadly it appears that we cannot get a modem device in Portugal for our ISP so we are going to use their combo in bridge mode, in order to use the new router we wish to buy. Therefore, which device do you suggest we purchase? We are looking for:
The budget would be 50-200€, buying in Portugal. If we can spend less then it would be better, but we would also not want to compromise as we want a good and long-lasting solution preferentially :) Thank you for your help! :) [link] [comments] |
Safe to have router in the garage? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:42 PM PDT It would make a lot of sense physically to have my router in the garage. I looked up the specs and it says it's okay to run in environments up to 104 degrees F. I'm in Florida. I bet the garage gets close to if not at the point during the summer. My thought is, though, that the ONT is in the garage and it's fine. Should I be okay with putting the router in the garage? It's not sitting in the sun. Anybody have any real world experiences they care to share? It's a router rental, so worst case scenario I get a new one for free I suppose... [link] [comments] |
Circumventing the direct connection requirement on an IP KVM Switch? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:40 PM PDT It's to my understanding that all IP Based KVM Switches require a direct connection from the KVM to the dongle. Do there exist any clever ways to bypass this requirement? I have a IP KVM Switch that I want to use to control a device in a separate room. I don't have any available patching in the apartment, so I have no 'direct' way to establish a connection from the KVM's server port to its dongle in the other room. I even tried using a Powerline adapter, but this does not really work as a direct connection since this is more of a serial type connection that is needed between the KVM and dongle. Are there any products out there that would enable me to create some sort of direct wireless session between the serial KVM server port to the dongle in another room? [link] [comments] |
Whats the best router for my situation? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:36 PM PDT I live on a farm with 2 houses. The houses are about 100 ft apart. We previously had 2 seperate connections, one to each house. But we want to just consolidate it to one. What's the best router that will reach that distance? I very much appreciate it [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:30 PM PDT Hi guys and gals, I have a modular home that I am wiring up. Unfortunately taking all the drywall down and running the cables in the walls are not an option and there are no attics. What I've read so far is that most people just go through the the floor, poke the cable through underbelly and leave the cable hanging between the underbelly and the ground. I'm wondering if any of you have better suggestions. Would going between the underbelly and the home be better. Should I run some sort of conduit? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. Help! Can't connect to Edgerouter-X for setup Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:26 PM PDT I needed to reset my router, and once I did I could no longer get to the start up config page on 192.168.1.1. [link] [comments] |
Spectrum Router & Modem stores private info? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:23 PM PDT I have a suspicion I wanted to put out there. Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:01 PM PDT So I live in an area with pretty crappy ADSL. I recently found that for whatever reason, DLink ADSL modems (at least the DSL-2730U model) has stability issues with my provider. I've tested 2 different models and the connection is a mess. My TP link (WD8980) and Netgear (x1000) were better but had other issues. Specifically, they don't use the standards for SNMP monitoring of ADSL connectivity. Unfortunately, of the devices I've tested, only the DLink gives me the ability to monitor SNR, connection rates, etc. the available models of TPlink and Netgear don't have this information available. So, i'll be in the US soon and am looking for a new ADSL modem that a) will be more stable and b) has full SNMP support. I don't need any bells and whistles, i have an Asus router I use for almost everything, I just need that ADSL to Ethernet connection. I was looking at a D-Link DSL-520B which fits the bill except is D-Link. I am just wondering, since the 2730U is an older device, if the 520B might provide a better connection. yet, we are talking about DSL which I don't think has had much development in the last decade? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 10:02 AM PDT Bit of a noob here when it comes to networking. I have a 2 floor 3000 sq ft house and cat5 wired to every room. On the top floor, I have an AT&T router (Pace model 5268AC) which was giving me crappy coverage downstairs. I had a Nighthawk R7800 sitting around so I connected it up (next to the AT&T one), set the Nighthawk to AP mode and then someone told me I had to turn the AT&T wifi off, which I did. The Nighthawk is giving me much better coverage, however there are still dead spots downstairs and outside. I want to extend the signal so I started looking into mesh but then wondered if I can just move the Nighthawk downstairs (connect to the ethernet already ran to the room) and then turn the AT&T router's wifi back on to cover the upstairs. But I need them on the same SSID. Can I do this? If so is it just a case of setting the channels far enough apart so they don't cross over each other? [link] [comments] |
problems with a switch connected to TP-link M9 Plus LAN port Posted: 01 Jul 2019 12:09 PM PDT Until now I've got 3 of the 'TP-link Deco M9 Plus' dishes and all wifi clients can connect just fine. To the main dish I had the cable modem connected and, again, all clients could connect to the internet without any issues. Today, I tried adding a simple, unmanaged switch to the LAN port of the main Deco dish. To the switch I've connected the cable modem (which also functions as a router) and two NAS devices. Wifi clients can still connect to the internet, so the switch is working fine. But the NAS devices cannot be pinged (time out). I can ping the internal address of the cable modem/router though. When I disconnect a NAS device from the switch, and I connect it directly to the LAN port of one the Deco dishes, I can ping the NAS. This is driving me crazy. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
How can I find my home ip address remotely? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 11:45 AM PDT I have checked in gmail and don't see any familiar ip addresses in the header. unfortunately everything that i send via email i do from my phone while on my phones(verizon) network and not my home wifi. I do have devices currently connected to my wifi at home like my asus router of course, pi-hole, plex, nvidia shield, google home, samsung smart things, my sony tv and of course my pc. Is there any way of getting my home ip address from any of these devices or services while i am 2000 miles away from my pc? [link] [comments] |
Using 2 modems, but one is really slow. Posted: 01 Jul 2019 03:29 PM PDT So I got a new modem as per my new internet, and it works good, problem is there are only 2 Ethernet ports, so I got an old modem plugged in, and it works as a access point. However, the second modem is much slower. Using Shaw speed test, I get around 300 mb/s download while using the Original modem, and only 90 when using the 2nd. Furthermore, my PS4's LAN cable won't work with the 2nd modem. It gets the IP, but no internet or anything else. Is there something I can do to fix this issue? I also did not set up the 2nd modem, I just plugged it into the first one and it worked, naming itself (my network name) 2. The second modem, the problematic one is the "Zyxel VSG1432". Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2019 11:05 AM PDT So, had a lightning strike maybe 50 feet away from the house yesterday. I was just hanging out and then crack! Although, I don't even think it landed by the house, no evidence of touchdown. Cable is out, no other problems I can see at the time. Spectrum comes by, lineman tells me the pole right by my house has a blown fuse. No sweat, dude does his thing and then the cable is back up. Now, I reboot everything, maybe one connection that is on ethernet is up and running. Switch ports are dark on all three switches. I can cope with this but, wtf. This strike found its way into the house somehow. No damage to the electronics, other than the switches. So, I order a new switch. Now, I need input, there has to be an easy way to protect all my wired equipment if this happens again. There has to be some form of easy use ethernet surge protector other than the goliath ac protectors. Thoughts? The Ubiquiti one is cool and cheap, any experiences anyone? Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
What can happen if I connect wires wrong in the router? Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:39 PM PDT My router has two jacks going in it. One from house telephone line (DSL) and one going out for phone(not that important). Each of those cables has only two wires. I need to make a new cable and I crimped myself and everything, double checked if colors are right. Still I wonder what could happen if I connect house line cable wrong into router? Like reverse polarity maybe or something. [link] [comments] |
