Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:46 PM PDT Today I got Gigabit installed. The 5GHZ wifi was reading normal speeds when the Ethernet/Wired was not. I'm running Cat7 and everything is working in order after troubleshoot. Found the problem in windows 10 that was bottle necking the Internet. I found somewhere buried in a forum about Windows TCP Auto Tuning. I don't know to much about it, but it was defaulted OFF. I found the command to turn it ON, and like a flip of a switch I was going from 80MBPS -> 900MBPS. Spectrum said they can't do anything inside Customers computers so this is something they will never be able to do. It was through my 2 hours of trial and error did I finally find the fix. I have 2 computers in the house one Win10 and one Win7. Both had the same issues with slow speeds, BOTH were fixed with the same command. If you have this issue before calling Tech Support try turning it on. If not, turn it back off and proceed with something else. The command is as follows. (Run as Administrator)
If Recieve Windows Auto Tuning said disabled, it is off and should say "Normal" To turn it on Type
Hopefully this fixes Bottle necked connection. Here is also a link to read more about it. Mine was defaulted Disabled so, this could always work both ways. WindowsTCPAutoTuning [link] [comments] |
setting up internet in 20,000 sq ft warehouse? Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:07 PM PDT Not sure where to post this but I have some experience with networking, windows installing, configuring, etc. but have not tackled a project as big as this. Family member wants me to help set up their internet for their business in a 20,000 sq ft warehouse. I only need internet/wifi in a couple places, but just wondering what sort of recommendations people have. I was thinking of getting a new router to use for the business internet connection, then getting a couple access points from ubiquity or something similar, and using power over ethernet to reduce wires and such, as I'll need to mount the APs off the ground up on the ceiling/along some shelving. Am I missing anything here? Just a new router(recommendations?), 2-3 APs, poe injector, and anything else? I also need some set up for a home network in the warehouse as they have someone living there who want internet upstairs and downstairs in a small section in the back, but I am less worried about that. Any tips, comments, etc. appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Update on converting phone wires to ethernet Posted: 31 Jul 2019 06:28 AM PDT So I've found the time to get around to it and I opened up the phone jacks to find this: https://imgur.com/a/BgMcfb1 Seems like there's an orange with white stripes, a white with orange stripes, a blue with white stripes and a white with blue stripes wire inside. Does this eliminate the plan of wired Ethernet or what are my options? This picture was taken from the jack nearest to the junction box. Edit: The white and blue wires look interconnected in the image above but they're not. [link] [comments] |
advice on whether to use a second router as an access point in a small 2 bedroom house Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:50 PM PDT We recently got our internet speed upgraded to 400 Mbps, but of course it's actually only 250 when connected to the modem. Therefore, I am going to buy a budget gigabit router, tp-link AC1200, to replace the non-gigabit router that I have (TP-Link TL-WR940N). The location of the router is one corner of our house. Point of this thread. If my main concern is the inside of the house, is it worth it to place the wr940N router as an access point on the opposite corner of the house which is at most 40 feet away? Second question: I'm assuming that it will benefit, with better connection and higher download speeds, the yard area next to the corner with the access point, right? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:40 PM PDT has anyone taken the old board out of there Thecus and put in a mini atx board but used the back plain for the hot swap drive bays? i have an N8800 that i got for free. would like to move my Unraid pc over to it and remove thecus motherboard. Would like to put my Unraid setup in the case and save some cash on buying a cheap 4U case with hot swap drive bays. The N8800 still works but is out of date and built in 2009. so i wanna put new life in this unit. Thecus N8800 [link] [comments] |
Moca setup question (Poe filter and coax ports) Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:37 PM PDT I have a 150 mbit connection from xfinity. My Arris tg1682 g telephony router supports moca 2.0. I went ahead and enabled it in anticipation for my Motorola moca adapter that's coming tomorrow. I know that I need to install a moca filter at the tap. I went outside to have a look. I found a splitter with 4 outputs and 1 input. From what I gather the filter needs to be installed at the input? What has me scratching my head though is that I actually counted 5 coax Ports in my home, but the splitter pictured in the link only has 4 outputs. Is one of my ports possibly not even hooked up, or is one of those outputs possibly splitting off somewhere else that I don't know about? Is one of them possibly not hooked up? Also, does this splitter support moca? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:30 PM PDT I am looking at running some Cat 6 from one room to two others, The easiest thing to do is to run it outside for about 20 feet outside and back into attic via a vent. I live in Los Angeles, no snow, temperatures go from 50 degrees in winter to 105 degrees in summer. Outside I can place it underneath the roof so only a portion (less than 5 feet) will actually be in direct sunlight. Should I go for outdoor rated cable? Its about double to price. Throughput difference when using TP-Link router Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:23 PM PDT Hello all. I'm using a TP-Link Archer A7 v5 router. It appears as if my wired speeds are being throttled when my desktop is connected directly to the TP-Link router. I'm with Spectrum and am paying for 400Mbps down and 20Mbps up. When connected directly to Spectrum's equipment, I average about 410 down and 21 up. When connected through the TP Link router, my download speeds are closer to 200Mbps down. I've tried this with multiple wired computers in my home with the same result. I'm running the latest firmware and I have the modem set to reboot weekly. The WAN and LAN ports show 1000Mbps full duplex. I understand that some overhead that would affect throughput is to be expected but the deltas shown here are hard to ignore. The first 3 rows shows the speed through the router. The bottom 3 tests were made directly connected to the cable modem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
High-amperage servers causing power outage Posted: 31 Jul 2019 06:56 PM PDT We have a collection of servers downstairs. In total, they draw about 40-50 amps (120V). The wiring and breakers were done by professional electricians, and everything is up to code. That being said, when overall power usage on the servers rises above the 45 amp area (across SEVERAL 15 amp circuits), all power in the house cuts out for a few seconds before returning to normal, even if the high amperage draw continues. I was wondering if any of you knew why this could be. To answer some questions: The servers are on a total of six separate 15 amp breakers. None of these draws more than 1500 watts continuously, and the breakers only serve those outlets. Wiring is directly from the breaker to the outlet. Isolated grounds are used on all of the outlets (orange outlet). Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
My browser takes 2-3 secs before it starts trying to connect to the websites. Help? Posted: 31 Jul 2019 06:16 PM PDT I've tested my internet speed and it's fast at 100mbps. But any website I want to connect to, as soon as I hit enter after typing in the URL or clicking on any links, it takes 2-3 secs of it doing the spinning wheel before actually trying to connect to the website. Not sure what terms to Google this issue for. So I'm here. Any idea what to fix? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 06:01 PM PDT right now I have ATT fiber 100 (100 mbps each download vs upload). Comcast has a coaxial cable so is it worth switch to Comcast ? [link] [comments] |
How to adjust DHCP lease time on Optimum? Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:43 PM PDT Not sure if this is the right sub for this question, but my DHCP lease expires every hour and disconnects all devices from the internet (usually about twice during that hour). I've viewed all the router settings within Optimum's website and I don't see any settings about the duration. Anyone know if this possible to adjust lease time somewhere else on their website? I've also tried setting each device up with a LAN address reservation and that doesn't seem to work either. Any help appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Wifi bridge 5ghz with ethernet output. Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:40 PM PDT We sell cloud cameras for residential homes that can connect to a poe wifi bridge. Connects via wifi, sends data to camera and provides power. The only bad thing is that the poe bridge can only connect to 2.4 ghz. In the city we have been getting more and more issues as mesh networks have been popping up. I want to be able to have a wifi to ethernet that can connect via 5ghz and output to a poe injector out put to camera. So far the adc-w100 is the only device that can do wifi to ethernet+power but again, only on 2.4. 4x mesh nodes broadcasting 2.4ghz and cannot be configured can easily interfere with our cameras. 10 feet away from wifi I can get 200 mbs on 5ghz while 3mbs on 2.4 ghz. Which WI-FI receiver should I choose? Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:27 PM PDT Hey guys, After some time trying to find the best USB WI-FI receiver for my gaming PC I've came up with 2 options: The NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 (92$ CAD Amazon) And The TRENDnet TEW-809UB AC1900 High Power Dual Band Wireless USB Adapter (79$ CAD Amazon) I would like to know your opinion on which one should I get for the best connection possible. Thanks a lot! (I'm moving to a new apartment and the router isn't on my floor so I don't have access to it. Each tenant has his on account to log into it. The WI-FI speed is around 40 mb/s download and 20 mb/s upload.) [link] [comments] |
Entire Apartment Complex on One Router/LAN Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:20 PM PDT Hello, my friend's entire apartment complex (10~ apartments with 25-30 people) has one or two access points, but the complex are all on the same subnet/lan/router. There are no ethernet ports in any room. I am pretty sure this extremely insecure. I wanted to ask about solutions to make my friend's situation better. Perhaps a mesh network somehow could rebroadcast the one AP and put a router for security or a VPN for all their devices? [link] [comments] |
Why is my modem showing up in my router's Traffic Analyzer? Is my WiFi traffic being counted twice? Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:16 PM PDT Lately I've been concerned about my Xfinity data usage, which always seems to be at least double what I expect we actually use in a month. Things are especially high this month, so I enabled the ASUS Traffic Monitoring in my router to see what's going on. Here's the traffic breakdown that I'm looking at. All of our devices are listed separately, including our Netgear modem that connects into our router (that's the MAC Address listed). What I can't seem to figure out (because overall ASUS's software is not as transparent as I wish it was) is why our modem traffic isn't instead being listed under everyone's WiFi devices instead. Why is it a separate device on the network? My concern is that it's somehow counting our web traffic twice, which is then going to Xfinity and resulting in our data meter being inflated. What's stranger is that it does not appear on any other page, including the full list of clients on our network at any given time. It only appears here. Would like to know what people think is going on here. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:13 PM PDT Currently using the router provided by talk talk. We have a 25mbps fibre connection. There is a bt box (modem?) connected to the talktalk provided router. It's on the first floor, I'm hoping an upgrade would increase speed for the ps4 on the same floor and the firestick downstairs. Which router should I get? I prefer using amazon as I got a £30 voucher from work and I have prime. Would be willing to go up to about £80? Most other devices on the network are phones and tablets. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Moving my modem router to a different room? Posted: 31 Jul 2019 04:22 PM PDT I had my internet installed yesterday in my new apartment, I thought there wasn't a cable outlet in the bedroom, but there is. My bedroom is a much better place to have it, that's where my work station is and I need (much prefer) a direct connection. I tried just moving the modem to that cable outlet but no signal, I open up the current outlet and there is just 1 wire running to the wall, any idea how I can move my modem? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:54 PM PDT Redditers, Just recently setup a dell r210ii with opnsense as my firewall/router. I converted my old ddwrt/r9000 in access point mode and connected it to the LAN port jn the dell r210. My firewall is set as the dhcp client that hands out ip addresses to wireless clients that connect through the router, but will not hand out or recognize wired clients connected to the dd-wrt router. Is there a config problem with the wrt router or do I need to add a managed or unmanaged switch to the LAN port of the opnsense box to accept wires clients and connect the wireless AP to the switch to accept wireless clients? Typing in my phone, sorry for the spelling and grammar. I am excited to be part of this community and jump in to the world of homelabbing! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:50 AM PDT Hello, I have a question regarding my current setup . Short explanation: Internet enters house through Router provider (set in bridge mode). Router provider is still necessary because we have to connect our B-box to this router. If we don't do that, the digital signal for our TV doesn't work fluently. Behind this router, is a TP-Link Archer C2300 router. He is responsible for the Wifi (internal & guest network). It's working, but the signal is not that strong around the house and sometimes it just stops working. Because there was low signal upstairs, I used powerline adapters to get a better wifi signal there. So far, this works, but also every now and then, you have full signal, but no internet connectivity. That's why I want to get rid of the Powerline adapters. I read alot about the Unifi setup and was thinking about buying a UniFi AP. I was checking out the Ubiquiti UniFi AP-AC-PRO or the Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-nanoHD but don't know which one would fit best for me. It needs to be able to support several phones/laptops/tablets (max 10 in total). Our house is a 2 story building, each floor is around 80m². Would it suffice if I buy 1 AP or should I need 2 (or more..?)? I was also thinking to go for a new switch, managed this time. Since I was in the Ubiquiti branche, should I go for a Ubiquiti UniFi Switch 8 - 60W . Or should I just stay with the TP-link materal and buy a TP-Link Omada EAP245 and a PoE Netgear switch? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
[troubleshooting] Modem and Router Speeds Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:26 PM PDT I currently have 300 Mbps service and ever since I signed up with my ISP they never have been true speeds. My ISP was out to the house today and said everything was normal. When I use my gaming computer to do a speed test I pull roughly 90 mbps down. When I use my work laptop I pull roughly 300mbps when I preform a speed test. What am I doing wrong? When I hook my router to the modem the everything runs slows and lags. The router and modem are less than a year old. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:56 AM PDT x-post from r/mikrotik, Looking to reach more people that would be able to help, also this sub seems well equipped to help in this. Hey Everyone! TLDR: Looking to deploy a large farmhouse/ranch style home with Mikrotik AP's and an RB4011 at my core router/switch. Have heard "mixed" reviews about their access points and wanted to ask for real world experiences with the hAP ac, and the hAP ac^2. Additionally I'd like more information about real world experiences with the AC equipped version of the RB4011. Purpose and context: Parent's live in a large home and the ISP provided router modem switch ap has (to the surprise of nobody in this sub) a huge amount of deadlines in their home. Their ISP connection is a docsis 3.1 connection with incoming at 500 down and outgoing at 20 up. (Rogers in Canada) Total size of the property is around 75 by 100 square feet in addition to a relatively large backyard. the backyard is separated by a brick wall. In addition I host a backup server for them in the basement (near where the RB4011 would be) for time machine backups and the like. They typically stream 4k blurays from my personal Plex server in a different city to laptops and wireless TVs (I know that wired would be better, but that's how they like it). I'm thinking that for an initial rollout I would do a 4011 in the centre of the house connected to the incoming modem for wan, wifi in the centre of the house, and to act as the router and primary switch(CapsMan?). From there I would use the Poe outputs on the access points that you guys think is better ( the hAPac/ac^2)running to the outer thirds of the home. I'm a computer engineer that more focused on the firmware development side but has some background experience/interest in networking, so I'm not terrified of setting this up through Mikrotik's cli/winbox. Father is a Computer scientist from way back in the day and "should" be able to do some maintenance if any issues pop up when I'm not in town. I'd like to do the initial set up once, and ideally have it be rock solid stable for the foreseeable future. (I'm thinking that since the ax's would be receiving poe from the RB4011, they would only need to unplug the 4011 to do a full network reset?) Thanks so much! If there's anything else I can provide/question requirements I can answer please let me know! -Felix P.S. I considered Ubiquity, but the total cost between switches, access points, cloud key and router, I couldn't justify spending that much for their set up. [link] [comments] |
Looking for the best firewall for homelab and gaming Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:40 PM PDT Currently I am running a PFsense firewall in EXSI in an older Dell tower with a dual Intel Pro gigabit NIC (i had to use EXSI as PFsense has a known issue with that boards BIOS). My Orbi's built in routing/network management wasn't cutting it, which is why I upgraded. However, my household has several Xbox Ones in it and they require some...interesting networking setup in PFsense (especially Destiny 2). Big shoutout to Space Invader Ones tutorial! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whGPRC9rQYw&t=4s I've spent quite a few hours tinkering with NAT, UPNP and firewall rules and never been able to get it really stable for my xboxes. I would like to have something more enterprise and controllable for my homelab, but able to handle gaming (UPNP, NAT etc.) well. From my research those look like opposing goals. Are there other firewall operating systems that might be able to do both? Preferably I would like to use my existing Dell tower rather than buy more equipment, but if that's what it takes to avoid being murdered for my wife getting thrown out of ranked matches when the xbox NAT poops the bed I'll do it :D [link] [comments] |
After a power cut my home network goes upside down Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:30 AM PDT I have a main router (Huawei B311 4G router) and two Asus routers basically daisy chaining, acting as switches and access points for other devices throughout the home. DHCP is only enabled on the main router. The setup usually works fine, but whenever we have a power cut things start to go wrong. Once power goes back on it's almost as if one of the "sub" routers starts acting as a host for the others, making the main router think there's no need to connect to the internet, basically rendering the entire setup useless. I can only restore proper functionality by turning all routers off, then switching them back on one by one, starting with the main router that provides internet. Is there a setting anywhere in one of the routers I can change to stop this happening? I'm sure it isn't meant to be like this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:54 PM PDT Can anyone provide a guide or link on setting up a paywall device for home WiFi? For example a device that sits between the router and the client that offers a paypal link or something to purchase WiFi access? Surely there are some easy solutions, I've seen it in cafes and what not but cannot google it for the life of me! [link] [comments] |
