Saving Locations in an SQLite database or another way?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:23 PM PDT

    Hello devs of reddit,

I am an android dev in the making and have to create a sample app that uses location for a school project and my idea is based off of this

    https://codelabs.developers.google.com/codelabs/android-training-livedata-viewmodel/index.html?index=..%2F..%2Fandroid-training#0

What I basically want it to do, is press the FAB, then get the location and save it in the class LocationItem that is the SQL table as described in the tutorial. On the main activity, there should be a recycler view and the recyclerview items displaying the date for the saved location. A click on an item in the recycler view should get the location from the item and start an implicit intent.

I basically redid this whole tutorial with my changed code and understandings. I have a location table, that I want to have the items id, or any other primarykey, a date object, for the saved date and 2 strings, for the longitude and lattitude.

However, it doesn't go as planned. So how would I easily save Locations with dates and fill a recyclerview with them? I am kinda lost and would appreciate any help

    Android App Visibility

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:35 PM PDT

    Hello fellow devs!

I'm here to ask a question:

I've finally joined you and released my app on the PlayStore but now... How do I get people to know it?

What do you do when you release an App? Where do you advertise?

    Do you even advertise?

It's been a month that my App has 14 downloads.

    Thanks!

How to create stackable sticky headers in Recycler View?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 04:15 PM PDT

I am trying to create stackable sticky headers in my RecyclerView, i.e. instead of new headers pushing the ones above out of the view, they stack on top of each other. I can't seem to find anything online about this, and was wondering how to do it.
I have a current StackOverflow question open for it, where you can see the code I am currently using (which extends LinearLayoutManager to implement normal sticky headers):
    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/56859600/stackable-sticky-headers-in-recycler-view

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Specific features suggestions

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:44 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Sorry if this seems like the wrong sub, but wanted to ask if anyone could maybe throw a few suggestions my way! It would really help me out : )

A little bit of context - I'm studying for my MSc in Mobile app dev, and I'm currently working on my dissertation developing in Kotlin. The project I'm working on is based on working with public wifi connections that people can leave feedback for. The current plan is to have a map interface working as a 'heat map' as such which will be generated by receiving location and analysing the length of connection to that network in that area. This hopefully will be able to indicate strong or poor areas of networks. As well as this, there will be an option for users to leave feedback manually if they wish to do so.

I guess my aim is to try to get some suggestions into any other specific features that potential users or developers would find useful, or, even just to gain some advice into changes if necessary.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for reading this post! : )

    Have a great day!

AdMob income is cut by 50%

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:46 AM PDT

Wow since July 1st my Impression RPM has gone down 66%

In others, the CTR has fallen through the bottom.

Is this a seasonal thing or permanent ? The start of a new quarter is usually a bit higher, as a fresh supply of money enters the advertising business.

Cross-Platform (Flutter/React Native) or Native (Android/iOS) for simple mobile app?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 05:35 AM PDT

So I'm a full-time backend developer (Java/Spring) and my wife wants me to build her a simple mobile app for her yoga. The core features will be her teaching schedule and yoga sequences (pictures). It's basically a glorified web app.

I was leaning towards React Native but I've read that facebook semi-abandoned the project and that big companies are moving away from this project (ie Airbnb). I then read about Flutter, which is picking up traction, but it might be too new (I don't really know). I haven't read about either technology in too much depth but I'm beginning to wonder if I should just go Native and build two apps. I don't really want to learn both platforms but I figured that my app is simple so maybe it won't be too bad.

Also, I do have some experience with frontend web development (mostly React) but no experience with mobile app development.

    Android Emulator On Ryzen

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:32 PM PDT

The Android Emulator is too slow. I can't use Hyper-V for a virtual Machine because I have Windows 10 home. I'm not sure if maybe dual booting windows and Linux would work. If anyone could let me know how to get my Android emulator running at a usable speed I'd really appreciate it.

Question about using ADB to view active/inactive sensors on an Android device

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 11:51 AM PDT

Hello, I am developing an app for school on a cheap android 6.0 smartwatch I got on Aliexpress. I want to access the gyroscope using ADB but I can't seem to find the correct commands. When I dump the sensors, I see that the gyroscope is there but is inactive so I would like to know if there is a command to wake it through ADB. Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions on resources I can take a look at.

If anyone can't edit their Play Store translations - here's the solution that worked for me, in case someone else has this issue

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 02:41 AM PDT

I had issues for over a week not being able to edit the translations' text. Support could not troubleshoot this successfully.

The problem was not about the length of the descriptions (all within limit), or about any special characters.

It did not help to log in from another device, nor to delete cache, nor to log incognito, nor to use another browser.

What DID help was to delete the translations ("Manage translation"--> "Remove translation"). Remove, then create anew. It's manual work but resolved my issue.

Posting here in case someone else finds it useful.

Requesting permissions - shouldShowRequestPermissionRationale return value is confusing

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 11:06 AM PDT

When you first install an app that contains permissions in the android manifest on Android 6.0+ those permissions will be initially denied. When you make the call to

    `shouldShowRequestPermissionRationale(Activity activity, String permission)` https://developer.android.com/reference/androidx/core/app/ActivityCompat.html#shouldShowRequestPermissionRationale(android.app.Activity,%2520java.lang.String))

this initially returns false even though the user has not explicitly denied the permission.

How can i tell the difference between a user explicitly denies a permission (deny dont ask again) or if the permission was never explicitly denied (user installed the app for the first time) ?

    Modularization help

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 07:14 AM PDT

My project is growing big and I want to split the features in modules.

However I need to have a usage of room in all my modules, so each one of my module's build gradle have to implement room dependencies or I can somehow write it in the app's gradle and have it across all modules ?

I haven't done module project and any other tips on doing this ?

    Sincerely.

Cross-plattform application logic development as a libary - You experience, tooling and language recommendations

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:53 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

We are a small team of developers and plan to develop an application once and deploy it on Android and iOS, but also keep the option open to port it to Windows, MacOS and Linux.

The current idea is to develop specific user interfaces for each platform, as we want "the native look and feel" for the users. In addition, we need to access platform-specific functions (such as their tcp/ip stack and Bluetooth). The entire application/business logic is to be implemented once as a cross-compileable library.

It should be possible to pass this library on to other application developers so that they can integrate our functionality into their apps. This should be as easy as possible for them, regardless of which language they use.

What are your experiences with it? Which toolchain and programming languagres do you recommend/use? What are the aspects to consider for our decision making?

Thank you for your help :)

PS: I will also post this in other partial reddits (e.g. the rust sub) to get a good overview of the pros and cons of each language/tool chain. I will link them in the comments.

How to reliably run location tracking services on brands like Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 11:40 PM PDT

I work for a cab company which specializes specifically in intercity and outstation rides. This means that we have to track the driver for long duration, continuously. our app works fine on stock android phones but how do I keep my location service active on OEMs like Oppo, Vivo, etc.

I saw a old post here related to the same issue which is now archived. I've searched around the internet and one solution (unreliable) I found was to fire a intent which leads to the autostart setting of the phone. This does not work on all of their devices, and also not all drivers are smart enough to turn on this setting.

Almost 70% of our user-base uses one of these devices so blacklisting these devices isn't an option. Is there any reliable solution? I'm in desperate need of it.
