    Simple Questions - July 02, 2019

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Embarrassing issue I just resolved

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:15 PM PDT

So, here goes... I built my PC over 3 years ago, and for the first year and a half it was great! I was getting like 150+ fps in CS:GO and I couldn't believe how snappy it was and then one day, for seemingly no reason, I was only getting like 30 fps in CS:GO and everything else felt sluggish. I searched for a solution for ages, I ran 100's of stress tests, updated bios, drivers, windows, cleaned all my fans and redid the thermal paste and to no avail, I eventually gave up out of frustration.

I've been using my PC only for college work since then, photoshop and 3D modelling was a major pain in the ass but I dealt with it because I couldn't afford an upgrade.

A full year and a half later I finally figured out the problem.

In my Windows Power Plan, I had the maximum processor state limited to 5%.

My Faulty PSU Broke 1300$ Worth of Components

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 01:09 AM PDT

A month ago, I wanted to play games during the summer. I wanted to build a gaming rig, so I bought Gigabyte Aorus Z390 pro wifi, 2 8gbs of vengence ram, an rtx 2070, an i9 9900k, a cooler master cpu cooler, an NZXT h500 case, and the Corsair RM 850x. When I plugged everything and turned the power supply on, the motherboard rgb flashed for 0.1 seconds and turned off. When I turned it on, I heard a single click and did not do anything. After that, I thought the motherboard was bad as it did not even light up. I bought a new motherboard which is the asus z390 e and tried testing it out, but still the same except for the fact that the rgb stays on. After that, I thought it was cpu got burned by the first motherboard. I bought a new asus x470 i mini itx motherboard, 2 16gb samsung ram, a noctua cpu cooler (small form factor), Ryzen 7 2700x cpu, and a node 202 (a small form factor case). I kept the rtx 2070 because it was one of the most expensive parts of the build. When I turned it on to test it, it did not post. I thought it was the gpu because the indicator light of the gpu would not pass, so I bought a Vega 64. When I tested it with a Vega 64, it did not work. This was the moment I realized the problem is with the psu as psu was the only old part. I ordered the sf 750 from corsair, and it still did not work. I switched back to the RM 850, and the usb port stops working and won't boot. After that, I turned it on again, and the rgb doesn't light up and the monitor would remain black. I tested both gpus using an egpu enclosure, and they worked perfectly fine. Now, I realize that the psu broke parts that is worth more than 1300 dollars, I feel like I got scammed. Now some people would say, "Come on, just contact Corsair and you will get yer money back." The real problem is the fact that the parts I bought the first time were bought in the US before I went back to korea, and I feel like I won't get any warranty because the warranty probably works only in the US. I also searched online and none of the websites people recommend work. What shall I do? Is there any way to get my money back?

Really torn on CPUs...Do I wait on the new series of AMD or buy a 2600x for $145 on sale now. What is the major difference supposed to be? Will I get that much more from the new series?

Can someone please explain what overclocking means?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:40 AM PDT

I've got a general understanding about it, but I want to know more. So if you can be in depth that'd be great. Pros and cons, what's so special about it, why overclock vs not overclocking. And finally how would you explain this in lamen terms. Again thank you in advance, I know it might be a silly question but figured I could post it here.

    Question about Ryzen release

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 09:25 AM PDT

Is it likely that on the 7th I would easily be able to get one or is it likely that they will be backordered/hard to get. I've never bought a cpu on release so I didn't know how that works and I'm thinking about selling my cpu and mobo now before the used markets get flooded.

    Windows 10 new install

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 09:43 AM PDT

So to load windows 10 on a usb, the only thing I have to do is go download the windows 10 media creation tool and select the usb I have plugged into my computer? Then I just plug it into my newly built pc and boot from the flash drive? Is it really that simple?

[Build Complete] First time ever building, feeling very proud of myself.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 04:34 AM PDT

This is my very first time ever building a PC, I was very nervous, but more excited than anything. I've been playing console since age 5, my brother had a PC for a while, but I never quite took. Over the years I started to get more and more interested, and after going back and forth for a while, I decided this was something I really wanted to get into.

The most nerve wracking parts where installing the CPU (nightmares about bent pins or screwing up during alignment) Installing the CPU cooler, I did not anticipate how hard you had to press to get the wraith cooler to thread. My most anxiety filled moment was when I flipped the switch and pressed power, I had been in fear that I would've messed something up or it wouldn't POST. But there it was, on and displaying BIOS.

Not only was this my first time working with parts like this, but it's the only thing I've ever built to truly call my own. I feel an immense amount of pride looking at this beauty, knowing that I was the one to put it together.

It runs beautifully, constant 60fps in R6 and Destiny 2 on high / custom settings, and has been pretty quiet and staying cool so far.

I couldn't have done any of this though without the wonderful help from this subreddit. From my dumb questions, to lurking in the dark, you all have been so kind and helpful along the way, and I learned so much. This is just the beginning of a wonderful new thing in my life, and I honestly feel like a kid at Christmas.

    Hard Drive Buzzing

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 04:11 PM PDT

I don't know if this is the best page to use but my hard drive makes a buzzing sound occasionally and i'm pretty sure its caused by the cables or something that are buzzing against the case because when I hold the hard drive or put pressure on my case or desk it immediately stops. If it is a cable management problem, what is the best way to cable manage sata/data power cables. There are are many endings to the hard drive power cable so i stuffed them underneath in the drive bay. (I will post a video if it happens again)

    Thanks.

“No signal” message on my monitor

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 04:01 PM PDT

Here is the build that I am using.

Looking for some last minute CPU advice.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:44 PM PDT

Building my first ever next week. I'm super excited, And making the 2 hour drive to micro center to grab my CPU and MOBO. I'm debating between the R5 2600 & 2600X. I also will be pairing it with a 1070 & 16gb of 3200mhz ram. I would be down to overclock, even though I know nothing about it as of now. Anyways. I'm going to be streaming fortnite and fallout 76, while needing to play fortnite at 144fps at comp setting. Will I be limited by the 2600? And need that extra 7% stock clock the X gives you? Or will I be fine to play and stream with the base 2600? Thanks. Like I said I am down to OC but would probably need an additional month to learn about it and afford a better CPU cooler. Thanks in advance guys!!

First PC build, would appreciate recommendations

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:28 PM PDT

Hi, I'm currently trying to buy all of my pc build components except for the gpu and cpu.

[PCPartPicker Part List](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Fmw8nH) - this is what I have so far

I'm thinking of buying these parts within the next few days since I've heard that their prices might go up after zen 2 launch and all that good stuff.

I want to pair these parts with the amd rzyen 7 3700x and the rtx 2070 super.

I've added up the costs and I get roughly $1,350, which is perfect because it leaves me with more of my budget for a mouse, keyboard, headset, and monitor.

Does this build make sense? I want to GAME at 1440p 144hz. Any recommendations would be nice. Can't wait for my first pc build!

Need help on how to proceed with my upgrade

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:28 PM PDT

So I am looking to upgrade my GPU. However I have a bit of a dilemma. I bought a 1440p 144hz monitor with the thought I will have this for many years, and eventually have the power to smoothly run 144hz at 1440p.

However now I'm having 2nd thoughts and thinking of downgrading to 1080p 144hz after realizing how hard it is to run.

I thought of a few options:

    1. Buy a 1080p 144hz (G-SYNC?) to play games on, while keeping my existing 1440p 144hz monitor for browsing, videos, etc.

    2. Use the $$ I would spend on this new 1080p monitor for a beefier GPU. Prior to this I was considering the 1660ti or something similar.

    3. Sell my current monitor and use that money towards a 1080p 144hz monitor with G-Sync.

One question I have is what is better between 1080p with med-high graphic settings and 1440p low-med settings?

I kind of play a mix of games, from competitive (Apex, pubg) to Skyrim, Divinity Original Sin 2. Although I'm not really invested in comepititive games.

    My current build:

    Things I'm looking for

    • Being able to run 1080p 144hz around medium-high settings. Since graduating college and getting a ps4, most of the PC games I play are multiplayer so I don't care too much about getting the highest graphic settings.

I'm guessing first upgrade would be GPU? I'm looking at something around a 2060, would that fulfill my criteria?

Not sure whats next after that. Will my CPU bottleneck the GPU?

EDIT: Changed 1440p to 1080p for my desired settings

PC build for music production. No Gaming.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:44 AM PDT

I have a tentative build that I want on pcpartpicker but I have a few questions.

    1) Since I will be doing minimal gaming, do I need a separate GPU and if so, how good of one should I get? Does it help with running my DAW or video editing?

    2) Would you recommend 16gb of ram or should I get more?

    3) I was going to wait and shell out for an Ryzen 3000 series processor since it's out next week, but perhaps I should buy a 1600 since they are so cheap right now and wait a bit to upgrade. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Edit: I produce electronic music. So lots of VSTs and midi -- not as much audio recording.

Computer gets insanely hot temps 100 degrees Celsius

PC specs- AMD Radeon graphics chipset RX 580. Core clock 1386 MHZ. 16 GB ram, CPU- AMD ryzen 5 2600 six-core processor.

Hi everyone, basically recently when I've been running Fortnite, overwatch and sometimes even Uno I check my msi afterburner and my pc temps are upwards of 100 degrees Celsius and I can feel the heat shooting out of it. I have two fans I installed and then the the two fans on the bottom of the graphics card. Do you guys think I need to add a few more fans that blow air into my build to cool it down? I'm worried to play because I don't want my motherboard to fry or anything

MY GPU IS AT 100 whenever I run a game.
