Posted: 01 Jun 2019 02:23 AM PDT Every time this question is in a post somewhere in this subreddit the comments are always the same. Couple of dudes saying: Use Ubuntu its most popular. Mint gang: use Mint its similar to Windows And under a pile of recommendation there's always the guy: Just use Arch smh. Can we/I just create a graph or an image similar to this, but more up to date version, would that be useful? ps What tools would be good to use to create such a graph? Edit: I don't know if it's clear enough, I don't need recommendations. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2019 01:09 PM PDT Hello, I'm running an MSI B450 motherboard, a Ryzen 3200G, and a Vega64. My computer is doing well except for the fact that it is not able to resume from sleep/suspend. When it wake up from sleep, the graphics cars fan starts spinning rapidly and nothing sows on the screen. It's happening both on Manjaro (with Gnome) and Ubuntu. It was doing fine when I was using the CPU integrated graphics. Do you think a motherboard BIOS update could solve this ? Do you have another solution ? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks [link] [comments] |

no soundcard detected in GUI on PoP OS 18.04 LTS Posted: 01 Jun 2019 02:46 PM PDT Hi! After a delightful period of two months on elementaryOS I decided to test PoP OS LTS 18.04 but something is trying to ruin my experience with it. I use an external USB sound card that works both on my windows partition and my iMac. When I used this card on eOS the output was fine and the mic input was fuzzy and distorted. Now on PoP os the system preferences GUI doesn't even show my creative soundblaster x G6. Did alsamixer in terminal and the card is detected and the microphone is fine but when it comes to the system pref and applications, it seems that my audio card is gone. I am a total noob with hardware troubleshooting in linux, so please help. Thank you guys! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2019 02:44 PM PDT I have been screwing around with installing Parabola with LUKS encryption and want to completely start over. I accidentally chose systemd as my init system, but I meant to choose OpenRC. I can't install OpenRC because of how deeply systemd is tied to the OS, so I ran the command [link] [comments] |

Receiving errors for internal hard drive that is mounted and set for read/write already. Posted: 01 Jun 2019 01:59 PM PDT I am turning my old computer into a home server. My goal is to have it run Samba (to share my media drive on my local network), Plex (to watch videos locally and allow family remotely), and run openHAB (to have more control over my homes smart devices). I installed Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS Here are those hardware specifications of the server. Here is a screenshot of the error with as much information as I could fit in the background. My issues all revolve around my internal WD Red 8TB hard drive that I use as a media drive. Up until yesterday it was always installed in this same computer and as far as I know was not used for any Windows system files (although I did see a folder for system volume that I'm not sure if it was created by Windows and only appears on Ubuntu or if it was created by Ubuntu). Here is a list of the issues in no particular order.
Here is what I have done so far in case I did something wrong. 2019-06-01:

Three CPU Cores suddenly running on 100% after one another Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:03 AM PDT Hey everyone, i just finished working on an excel document on my PC (running linux mint 19.1 cinnamon) when the fans suddenly started spinning a tad bit more than usual. I hence looked at the system monitor, and here i noticed that CPU1 was running at 100% since 10 seconds. It continued doing so for about 30 more seconds, before it went to "idle" again (0-5%). But as soon as CPU1 went down, CPU2 started randomly shooting up to 100%. There it stayed for about 20 seconds, then it went down again. And as soon as it goes down, guess what happens? Yeah, exactly. CPU3 decides to join the fun and goes up to 100% for about 10 seconds. Then everything was normal again. During said time, the Temps for CPU cure 1 and 2 were at about 52C, which is unusually high for desktop work. However, the Resources tab from the System Monitor didn't show any program that took up more than about 10-12% of the CPU during this whole ordeal. Thus i am left to wonder...what could have caused this? If any of you has any similar experiences or groundbreaking theories i am very thankful. [link] [comments] |

Questions about full install on usb Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:41 AM PDT I want to do a full install of Manjaro on a 16GB usb. What are the problems that I might encounter? Can I run it on other people's PCs/laptops? Is there a guide I can follow? [link] [comments] |
AMDGPU support for workstation GPUs Posted: 01 Jun 2019 12:22 PM PDT From what I understand, AMDGPU supports graphics cards that have the GCN architecture, 3rd gen or newer. Additionally, on the AMD websites it lists all of the gaming GPUs that are GCN, 3rd gen or newer. AMD also has workstation GPUs that use the same architecture. For example, the Radeon Pro cards are all GCN 4th gen or newer. Does anyone here use an AMD workstation GPU? Does it work with AMDGPU? [link] [comments] |

Looking to transition to Linux Posted: 01 Jun 2019 12:00 PM PDT Good Afternoon Reddit, I am looking to wipe windows off of my desktop and fully transition to Linux. I am not new to Linux; I have Kali on my Thinkpad and Ubuntu on my IdeaPad. However, for school purposes, I have always kept Windows on my desktop to allow me to utilize Word, Excel, da da dah. I have been thinking it over for a couple days now, and am just hesitant for a few reasons: Besides the use of window only programs, how will this affect the remainder of my CS degree? Will I ever be able to play PubG again? I have 16GB of ram with a 256GB SSD, and am aware I can partition the drive, but I have heard unpleasant stories about windows taking over and wiping the Linux from my drive. Any ideas? Suggestions? And as always, comments and concerns are welcomed! Thanks [link] [comments] |

Help with Linux compatibility? Posted: 01 Jun 2019 11:31 AM PDT I have a built PC that I transplanted a 2TB SSD into from an older PC I had. The old PC was running 2GB RAM and a Celeron processor. My new rig is running an AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and 16GB of RAM with an RX 470. Never had an issue booting Ubuntu on my old Intel computer, but since moving the SSD, I try to boot into Ubuntu and it tells me all processes have timed out. Then terminating the boot process. Requiring a reset/reboot of my computer. Any ideas on how to get it to work? I've used Live USBs with Mint Cinnamon and Ubuntu 18.04 with identical results. [link] [comments] |

Thinkpad X260 FP scanner only works on first login after reboot (Manjaro) Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:00 AM PDT I've successfully set up my FP scanner on my X260 to use to log in, but it only works on the first login after a reboot. Does anyone know why and how I can fix this? I still have the prompt in the password box to swipe my finger on it, but the green light doesn't turn on or flash on the scanner and swiping my finger does absolutely nothing. Thanks! unetbootin, rufus, and a late-year 2007 MacBook - a silly stumbling block story Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:04 AM PDT tl;dr: On Winows10 making a live-boot USB stick, Unetbootin was not properly pushing the ISO to the USB stick; Rufus did! I have a late year 2007 MacBook which is about useless as a Mac due to inabilities to take new MacOS upgrades for quite some time. Luckily, I discovered I had the 64bit versions so really just was looking for something lite due to the old hardware specs. I ended up using unetbootin from my Windows10 box to prepare my USB stick for Ubuntu (yeah, I know, not so lite but was just looking for something that would boot from the USB as my first attempt, I expected some hardships due to the Apple hardware compatibility.) Unetbootin finished up and I went to boot up the MacBook and nothing... I had an ArcoLinuxB iso I tried next, which I had recently used to setup a dual boot on my Windows 10 rig. Again I used unetbootin to prepare the USB stick, stuck it in the Mac and tried to boot it, which it did! Liveboot failed to actually start but figured it was a step in the right direction; maybe Ubuntu does something weird with their liveisos? Was kinda bummed and gave it a rest for a few weeks and came back to it yesterday thinking maybe I had the 32bit boot controller but the 64 bit processor MacBook model... For kicks I tried Rufus to prepare the USB stick again with Ubuntu and tried to boot the Mac from it. Boom! Worked like a champ and (eventually) came up. Since I have tried Xububtu and MxLinux. The latter is quite zippy and I even figured out how to connect to WiFi on the Broadcom. So, in conclusion, I am not sure why unetbootin failed me, I've used it on and off over the years and never really ran into this, could be finicky Mac hardware, but I think I'll stick with Rufus for a while. Thanks for listening! [link] [comments] |
[Debian Testing] no anti-aliasing in 3D applications or elsewhere Posted: 01 Jun 2019 05:17 AM PDT OS: Debian Testing (4.19.0-5-amd64) Hardware: Thinkpad x230 (stock) Description: No 3D application is able to use AA anymore. Previously AA worked in games and applications that provide it as an option, and in benchmarks such as glmark2 and glxgears. All applications are affected and changing an AA setting in a game for example with flicker the graphics or some other visual as if something has changed, but nothing happens. This happens in Linux native programs and those running in Wine. Everything else is running fine. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a way to manage and sync podcasts Posted: 01 Jun 2019 03:27 AM PDT I've recently made the switch from Windows 7 to Xubuntu, and so far I'm loving it. I'm exploring the possibilities, downloading new software, I've created a OS-eating black hole already... in other words: I'm having lots of fun. But one thing keeps bugging me. On Windows, I used Musicbee to manage my music library and (more importantly) my podcast subscriptions. It was very easy to use, and it allowed me to sync my podcasts easily with my MP3 player. Now I've tried lots and lots of music/podcast managers on Xubuntu, but none of them really do what I want them to do. Specifically:
Programs I've tried include Clementine, Parole, Cantata, Rhythmbox, Lollypop, Vocal, Audacious, Quod Libet, and probably a few others I don't even remember. Cantata at least lets me find and download podcasts, but it doesn't have a proper podcast sync feature. Rhythmbox could be good, but it seems terribly out of date and it's very unstable on my machine. Is there something I'm missing? What would you recommend I use? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2019 12:58 AM PDT Does anyone have some suggestions for distros for programming? Right now my plan is to get maybe a SSD and put that in my pc and switch out linux distros. The main OS I will still be using will be Windows, cause gaming, but I want to find one that I like as I have used Ubuntu for a little bit and I didn't really like it that much, then again that was in a VM so that might have effected it. So right now I am just looking for a couple of suggestions. [link] [comments] |
