Made the Leap, Couldn't Be Happier Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:47 AM PDT I don't know if this is allowed here, please remove it if its not, but this is beautiful. Coming from a lifetime Windows user, this is the most fun I've had in years. Booted up Mint Cinnamon and played around with some things, although I immediately got bored with the "Windows" feel of it. After bricking and restoring my HDD twice, I'm on debian KDE and all I can say is...this is awesome. Edit: Deleted a word. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:03 PM PDT I have Mint on an older Gateway laptop and have my power settings set to never turn off, but when the screen comes on to dim after no activity, the wifi also disconnects. How can I keep this from happening since my torrent seeding stops when this happens? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:42 PM PDT So, i made the switch from Linux mint to ubuntu, and.. So far, my experience has sucked, though it was mostly my fault. I fixed all of the things that were my fault, and now i have 1 last problem standing in my way that i simply can't figure out. The kicker is that i can't open a terminal login without ubuntu crashing. And i can't login graphically without crashing. Please help, my computer is currently useless. [link] [comments] |
Finally took the plunge - but what to do with extra SSD space? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:59 AM PDT I've been using Mint 19/19.1 for about seven months now, dual-booting with Win 7. I finally decided to wipe the Windows partition and reinstall Mint as the sole OS (after backing up all my data, of course). I also reformatted the HDD from NTFS to Ext4 and put all my data back. I have a 256 GB SSD for the system drive (/ and /swap) and a 1TB HDD for data (/home). In the dual-boot config, the two drives worked nicely as the OSes took up most of the SSD and were both able to access the data on the HDD. Now that I have just Mint on the SSD, it takes up only about 50 GB, even with a couple of Flatpaks. I have over 200 GB of free space - what should I do with it? I have a couple pieces of Win software that I plan to experiment with using Wine (Photoshop CS6 and SW: The Old Republic). That all should end up on the SSD, I think, but still should leave me with plenty of room. Maybe I should have put /home on the SSD for most of my data and then just set up another partition on the HDD for big stuff like music and videos? [link] [comments] |
Borked my LM install. Had to wipe and start over. How can I make sure this doesn't happen again. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:18 AM PDT Several weeks ago, I was running 18.3 KDE and tweaked one thing too many and broke the GUI so all I could boot into was a command line. I had previously copied my /home directory to another drive, so I did another install of LM 18.3, then replaced my home directory with the one I had backed up. Didn't work. IIRC the home directory I backed up was encrypted so that might have been part of the issue (and overkill). Since I couldn't recover my home directory, I decided I had to do a new install and figured I'd upgrade to 19.1 Cinnamon as long as I was at it. Thankfully I keep all my data on a separate drive so I didn't lose very much at all. Now that I've got a fairly new install, how can I back things up properly so that if my GUI (or something else) breaks I can restore without doing a full install? [link] [comments] |

Questions about Lightweight Virtual Machine Setup for Microsoft Word Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:42 AM PDT Hi, I may be using a VM for that inevitable, hopefully rare, and serious need to use MS Word for client work (the only one important purpose I see, so far). Seems it's the second best option, after MS Online. (Side note: I found a software that "brings" MS Online to the Linux desktop. Anyone else using it?) Just to be clear, I am embracing Linux Mint with arms quite wide open, including the beautiful LibreOffice that came with it. Another, although unimportant, purpose is file transfers with my iPhone. On MS Windows 8.1 I used to use a nice app called CopyTrans (never used iTunes). That's it! I have 2 similar PCs both running Mint Cinnamon 19.1:
I'm not sure but I think those specs are modest for VM use...I may need a lightweight setup (please keep that in mind).
Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:33 PM PDT Hello, not 100 % Linux related but since I am using it and all of you are blessed with great knowledge.... I encountered two or three files, all of them quite large (1-4 GB) and compressed archives. All of them were not readable or truncated but were totally fine a few months ago and on my backup drive. I used smartctl to test my drive (-t long) and again to view the results. However, I am not sure what they are telling me. Is my harddrive failing or not? [link] [comments] |
Is there any way to run live cd but save any changes into current bootable usb? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 08:43 AM PDT it would be really cool if we bring our personal pc within the only usb stick, and plug in somelse computer and borrow processing power, and don't make any changes to harddrive when unplugged, but all settings saved on our stick. Semi-noob looking to jump into the deep end Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:26 PM PDT I understand that customizing Linux is (fairly) easy to do, but I'd like to build my own partially from scratch, picking my own file/package managers, window managers, etc without a whole bunch of stuff pre-installed I'm not a total stranger to Linux, and I feel like I would most benefit from hand-picking these components myself, especially considering I'm using a really low-end laptop I would like to use a debian/apt base, and do research to pick desktop environments etc based on my needs. Does anyone have any advice on where to start and the components I need to have a fully functional Linux install? [link] [comments] |

How can I make resizing windows easier? [Xubuntu 19.04] Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:02 PM PDT It's difficult to resize windows because the sides are very slim and difficult to click. I'm interested in changing to i3, though I don't know how to start. Is there a way I can make it easier to resize windows? Thanks. Lenovo ThinkPad T430 Xubuntu 19.04 [link] [comments] |
I think I've done something stupid! Help!! Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:46 AM PDT So I switched to linux a week ago after using Windows for a decade. I installed Elementary OS using dual boot. As I was curious and noob, I wanted to install different distro which looked cooler. I downloaded Manjaro, formatted the Elementary OS partition using DiskGenius before even googling the proper way to unistall linux. Then when I tried to install Manjaro I got stuck with GRUB saying Error: Unknown File System. Entering Rescue Mode. I somehow manage to set windows boot manager default and tried this tutorial http://linuxbsdos.com/2015/09/05/how-to-delete-grub-files-from-a-boot-efi-partition-in-windows-10/ . But no luck. Ubuntu Boot manager won't delete from Bios. Tried this too https://www.blackmoreops.com/2018/09/27/remove-grub-bootloader-from-windows/ Wasted so many hours but no luck. So I re-installed my windows as I was frustrated and hoped it would remove GRUB, but it didn't. It's still there. Now I cannot install any linux OS. Tried Elementary OS, Ubuntu, Manjaro. How can I remove this without formatting my HDD? This is my boot menu after re-installating windows. [link] [comments] |
I can't open Intellij on my PC. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 10:37 AM PDT I am using Arch with i3wm and Manjaro with i3wm. I installed Intellij using sudo pacman -S intellij-idea-community-edition. But now I don't know how to open it. It isn't showing up in the dmenu and trying intellij-idea-community-edition, intellij-idea, intellij. or anything similar isn't helping. I feel like I am losing my mind. [link] [comments] |
