How do people make such aesthetic terminals?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:27 PM PDT

For instance, I don't get how syntax highlighting and colors work generally in the terminal - and then also within text editors such as vim. I know for the terminal you can configure PS1 with colors and things like `ls` but is there a more general encompassing technique? And as for vim, do you have to have vim configured to recognize all of the text file formats that you'll be using and do you need to customize each specifically?

    window won't resize

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:35 PM PDT

So, I wanted to play a unity game, but unfortunately the settings window that loads before the game won't resize so I can press the play button. Is there a program or setting that allows me to do this? The window will resize side to side, and up, but not down.

KDEConnect without using Wifi and on different networks?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:10 PM PDT

I was looking for an application that lets me send SMS messages on my PC and came across KDEConnect. By default, it requires both devices to be on the same network via wifi; however, I don't want to enable wifi on my phone and rather use data which I have on 24/7 anyway. What are my options?

    • Can I have my PCs I want to SMS from (desktop and laptop) be exposed to the open internet with the necessary ports open or do I need to use a VPN (I have no experience with this)? From a brief google search, it seems like using VPN is a popular option but I'm not sure of having the desktop/laptop "exposed" for the phone to connect to from anywhere is possible and if so, if it's safe.

    • If exposing desktop/laptop directly is not possible/advisable, I suppose VPN is the only option. How would that work--which would serve as client/server? I also have a Raspberry Pi that I currently use as an SSH server and have configured my laptop to be able to ssh to it from anywhere (i.e, it's exposed to the open internet and is authenticated via ssh key so should be safe). So perhaps the RPI can run the VPN server? Not sure.

    Much appreciated.

TEaring + Nvidia in Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:41 PM PDT

I recently reinstalled LInux Mint Cinnamon to test out and to learn a bit about it. Before using cinnamon I was in XFCE, which had a tearing problem also. When i tried to apply the same file edit in Cinnamon, my display went dark after reboot and no matter how much i tried i couldn't make it work with Nvidia again.

Is there a way to remove the tearing while also keeping Nvidia? Should i use Nvidia's latest drivers (currently 430.x)?

Getting ddraw.dll to work properly in Wine

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:36 PM PDT

I'm trying to play this old Korean game in Wine (or on PlayOnLinux) and it needs ddraw.dll to work properly. The game itself comes with a ddraw.dll and it installs to the Program Files folder and it is way bigger than the one in the /sys32 folder.

I can't get it to work and I've tried:

    • Manually adding ddrawex in the libraries under Wine config

    • Replacing the ddraw.dll in /sys32 with the program's ddraw.dll that I need.

    • Freshly installing the program in a completely new wine instance

    • Forcing ddraw renderer for opengl

Any ideas of how I can go about getting ddraw.dll to play nice?

How to setup a linux server with an old desktop?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:11 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'd like to setup my old desktop as a home server to store files and potentially login with ssh and using filezilla.

Now, i am aware of how to install the Os but the problem is with how to setup ssh and filezilla so i can store and download files whenever needed.

I know how to figure out my ip adress but I always find 2 ip adresses

    Let me explain:

when i use the hostname -i command i get an address let's called it A

and when looking thought the network informations i get an address let's call it B

which one should i use for the server?

    Thanks in advance.

Having difficulty installing Anonymous Nerd font.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 03:53 PM PDT

I needed a font that renders glyphs in the terminal, so I got the Anonymous font working on one of my computers by downloading the ttf file and placing it in ~/.fonts director, and then running fc-cache -fv

However, when I tried replicating this process on my other computer, no matter what I tried, I can't seem to get the font to show up as one of the options in the terminal.

This is the file that I downloaded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How does a new architecture (say, Zen 2) work with software?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 03:42 PM PDT

Don't all compliers need to support the architecture to allow applications to work on it? What if there was no python interpreter which supports the machine instructions for zen 2? How does this process go about?
