Is this a good deal? - Thinking of getting the HP Envy 13.3" 16GB 512GB SSD MX150

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 12:43 PM PDT

Looking for advice as I'm not well-versed with specs. My budget is around $1,000-$1,200. I am looking for a high-performance laptop that is capable of handling basic gaming but mostly will be used for coding, running virtual machines, models, videos, large-scale web browsing.

Link to the exact website I'm looking to purchase from - https://www.costco.com/HP-ENVY-13-Touchscreen-Laptop---Intel-Core-i7---GeForce-MX150---4K-Ultra-HD.product.100431786.html

Any suggestion on different deals or computers will be very helpful!

    Thank you!

    Laptop recommendations?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 04:02 PM PDT

Hey all! I'm currently looking to get a new laptop because my current one (a chromebook) hardly runs anything. I'd like my new one to run basic things like microsoft word, as well as some photo/video editing apps for my gopro and camera (and maybe light gaming like minecraft, nothing serious on that front though). I don't particularly want to spend more than around $600, so I was wondering if anyone has any recs. It doesn't have to be the best model known to mankind, just enough to run those apps for moderate student level use. Sorry this was kind of all over the place, but any help is much appreciated :)

    Laptop for Engineering Student

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:58 AM PDT

I'm starting freshman year of college this fall, and I plan on studying mechanical engineering. I'm wondering what I should be looking for in a laptop. My phone and tablet are both Apple products, so I'm considering getting a MacBook Pro, but I've heard some talk that Mac's OS can't run all the required software. I'm not sure if that's true or not. I'm also not sure whether I should get 256GB or 512GB hard drive space.

I don't plan on using my laptop for more than just basic internet browsing, watching Hulu, and some light gaming (Kerbal Space Program and maybe some Total War games). What laptops should I look at?

Looking for a decent gaming laptop. About to pull the trigger on this one unless there's something better for the same price.

    Lenovo Ideapad 330s- what now?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 04:56 PM PDT

After several weeks of research and subsequent decision paralysis, I finally settled on this item. It fits my budget and other requirements with solid enough memory. I'm not a hard core user, just light multi tasking. And I could pick it up today! I did learn in my research that now I need to do a few things like uninstall some software and adjust a few other things -like switch Windows 10s to just 10. Any advice for me? Thank you! From a just savvy enough to be dangerous new laptop owner

Help me find the perfect laptop!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 03:48 PM PDT

    Hi y'all,

Entering my first year of college, I'm looking for a laptop that's capable of handling architectural/engineering software (things like 3D rendering and such). Here's a list of my current options:

    1. Thinkpad X1 Carbon
    2. Lenovo S940 14"
    3. Razer Blade Studio Edition
    4. 2019 Dell XPS 13
    5. Huawei Matebook X Pro

The Lenovo and Huawei's display look amazing but I'm worried I'd have to deal with a lot of problems regarding glare because of the glossy finish. Bad thermals/loud fans are also a turn-off for me. Any thoughts?

Lenovo X1 Carbon (5th generation) versus Dell XPS 13 (9380)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 03:37 PM PDT

I'm stuck in decision between these two on which to buy. I'm a student and would use mostly for school and debate, not really any gaming. Has anyone had any experience that could help me make my decision? Thanks!

Recommendations for a laptop for media creation

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 02:46 PM PDT

Originally I had my eyes on the huawei matebook x Pro with 16gb ram, i7 and MX150, however the price increases in the UK and the whole situation with huawei right now has made me instead consider the hp envy x360 15 with the same RAM, graphics and processer but with a lower 1090p screen https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=4TX40EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB Has anyone got any recommendations for a similarly priced laptop with 16gb ram, i7 and MX150 with perhaps a slimmer design and maybe a better screen for around £1200 (I'm aware better screen may be a bit of a push) and by better I moreso meant more Adobe RGB coverage and possibly higher resolution

For context, I'm going to university in September to study a media degree.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £1400, United Kingdom * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -good graphics, enough ram for video editing* How important is weight and thinness to you? I want something that isn't bulky and practical to carry with me in a backpack * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 inches* Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. photoshop, premiere Pro, possibly after effects If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I will probably use this to game but not at heavy use, not really bothered about max settings* ** decent Adobe rgb coverage and fingerprint scanner - * **

    Just wondering what would happen

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 11:39 AM PDT

A very good friend of mine just got her new laptop (Ideapad 320s). This laptop has a USB C port, however it's one that does not support charging. (You can not use it to charge the laptop afaik). So my question is: what would happen if i plug my qualcomm q.c 3.0 wall charger into the laptop. So i will take a charging brick i use to charge my phone and instead of plugging the usb type c cable into my phone - i will plug it into the usb c port on the laptop.

Thank you very much in advance for your answers!

I don't know how Costco does it...

    Posted: 31 May 2019 03:25 PM PDT

But their deal on the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon is astonishing. This is the 1080p Non-touch version with the i7-8550, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD. I built a similar on Lenovo's website and it was >$1500, it was >$2000 at Best Buy.

Costco sold it to me for $1300. I don't even understand how.

Lenovo Yoga for CAD programs & digital art?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:44 AM PDT

I'm a mechanical engineering student looking for a new laptop. I'm going to need to run programs like Solidworks. However, my major hobby is digital art, and I just discovered that the Lenovo Yoga series has Wacom digitizer capabilities without the need for an additional graphics tablet. Is this the best choice for someone who wants to run CAD programs as well as draw directly on the screen with pressure sensitivity? From my research it is, but I figured I would ask here as well.

INTENTIONALLY being connected but not loading

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:40 AM PDT

So I have an HP Pavilion (Intel i5 8th Gen, Nvidia GTX 1050) and I want to plug the charger in so that it's connected, but not loading the battery. This increases gaming performance so that's the reason. But when I google how to do it, all that comes up is solutions to it, as when it's a problem (here's not a problem, it's something I actually want to do). Any tips?

PC gamers of reddit , which laptop is better?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:00 AM PDT

I'm gonna do mostly gaming (AAA , Indie games and Emulation), a lot of CG in Blender. I'm in high school so I will also do a lot of coding and editing. My dad recomends the MSI, but IDK if many games will hold up. I'm also coming from a low end laptop so I really don't want bad performance. The MSI GL63 or Lenovo Y520?

    MSI Specs: - 15" Full HD (1920x1080),
    - Latest 8th Gen. Intel Core i7 processor 8750H
    - GTX 1050 4GB
    - 1x 8GB DDR4-2666, 1 slots, up to 16GB
    - 1x1TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
    - Windows 10 Home Operating System
    - Exclusive Cooler Boost 5 Technology
    - All New NAHIMIC 3 - For Next Level Audio Immersion

    Lenovo Specs:

    7th Generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ

    Windows 10 Home 64

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5

    16 GB DDR4 2400MHz (8GBx2); 2 x SODIMM Slots

1 TB SATA HDD 2.5" wide, 5400 rpm, 7mm high, SATA 6.0Gb/s support

Help me find a lap top for studying!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 04:44 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: About 300€, Spain

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications, I plan to use it at home mostly.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't really care much about this.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'd prefer if it had Windows (Mac is a bit out of budget) because I had Linux before and didn't managed to understand it very well.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, but I'd prefer it to be big.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan to use it for studying so Office and web browsing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd prefer it if it lasted "updated" for a long time. Like the hardware is powerful enough to keep the computer updated without compromising performance.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I just finished highschool and my parents said I can choose something as a present because I had good grades. I plan to ask for a computer, because the one I have isn't really good and takes forever to do stuff like turning on or just web browsing (it has like 6 years). I want a computer that isn't very expensive but that I know it will last running good for a good time without having to buy a new one.

I want it to use Office, Google Drive, etc. and also web browsing, because I used my phone to do this while I was studying and it wasn't very comfortable (also, I got distracted a lot), so I suppose I won't need super high specs.

About it's aspect, I don't really care about this as long as the computer works well.

    That's all! Thanks.

New SSD performing 'Performing WAY BELOW EXPECTATIONS' on test?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 07:11 AM PDT

    Hi Guys

I just bought a new laptop from https://www.box.co.uk/ and decided to run a quick test using

    test site: https://www.userbenchmark.com/?redirFrom=userbenchmark.com&

    my laptop https://www.box.co.uk/30023991-Medion-Erazer-P6689-Gaming-Laptop_2277804.html?_ga=2.108463106.1862234115.1558879664-771806918.1558879664#DetailTop

I have run the test 3 times and here are the results are generally consistent with:

    https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/17342057

Im just a bit concerned with

    "HS128G39TND-N210A 128GB

14,047 User benchmarks, average bench 61%

    78GB free (System drive)

    Firmware: 30000P10

    SusWrite @10s intervals: 125 122 126 125 125 127 MB/s

Performing way below expectations (1st percentile)"

could this be evidence of faulty SSD on this new laptop ?

I don't have the time right now to run 24hr tests or other superintensive programs but are there any other quick tests I could use to check the hardware is right for the new laptop?

I have checked the laptop physically, usb ports, all keys and trackpad, wifi but wanted to check hardware using that site

Any help or advice for testing the new laptop greatly appreciated

    Thanks :)
