Which router/modem for a small apartment? Posted: 01 Jun 2019 10:57 AM PDT Hello, I am new to this home networking thing and I have a couple questions. I am going to move into an apartment soon, and it will be about 1,100 square feet. I am trying to decide which router is the best as I am in college and on a budget. I will have 4 people living with me, and maybe 15 devices max. I game on my pc, but nobody else does anything but stream music/netflix. I will be using Charter Spectrum if that helps. Thanks in advance! Ninja Edit: Also there will be a lot of networks around since it is an apartment complex. Also, I am not sure what the difference in a modem and router is, so if someone could explain, I would greatly appreciate it! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2019 08:36 PM PDT Hi! I am trying to set up a router such that it can connect to some other wifi network with internet access. I also have a network switch connected to the router via an ethernet cord, and the switch has several other devices connected to it via ethernet cords as well. Is there a way to make this setup such that all of the devices connected to the network switch can connect to the internet via the router's wireless connection? Is this even possible? If so, how could I go about doing this? I apologize if this is unclear, I'm new to networking. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2019 11:22 AM PDT As in title. Net test shows between 12 and 14 MB/s speed. For comparison, previous antenae had up to 6,5. However, previous antenae provided me with up to 3,5 MB/s speed for Steam, and current one only delivers flat 2 MB/s top. With lower average. It's not that other applications hog the bandwith either - If I do other stuff download slows down and/or the download prevents quick image/video loading. [link] [comments] |
Seeding issues/Port forwarding without access to my router Posted: 01 Jun 2019 11:11 AM PDT Hi all! I originally posted this in a different subreddit, and they recommended that I repost here. I'm Relatively new to this, but I recently joined a private tracker that requires a certain ratio. I'm using uTorrent 2.2.1 and I have a google OnHub router. I successfully set up port forwarding through my router, but tech support said that I'm running into troubles upstream at the level of the modem. To further complicate things, my modem is provided by my ISP and is kept in a locked cage in the basement of my apartment building. I've contacted my ISP to setup port forwarding, but they don't seem super keen on it (we'll see). I thought I might be able to get away with seeding at my local work cafe, but it seems like they have this blocked. I feel like I never had these issues at my old apartment. Does anyone have any creative tips on how to make this work? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Devices stop seeing each other after few hours Posted: 01 Jun 2019 11:03 AM PDT Hello all! I have been having a networking issue in my new house that I can't figure out. I have a CenturyLink modem router combo on which I have disabled the wifi. I have my own router, a TPLink Archer C9, which I use for the wifi. I started noticing that I couldn't connect to my wifi printer from my devices. Then I realized I couldn't cast to my TVs anymore, as my phones weren't seeing the TVs. If I restart my modem and router the devices see each other for a few minutes or hours, and then stop again. Any clue what could be going on? Another possible clue which I think could be related is my IP surveillance cameras. When I'm on my home network I can connect to them via the local IP, but not via my external IP address. If I'm not on my home network then it connects to them via the external IP without issue. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
What's a good replacement for a Plusnet 2704N Router? Posted: 01 Jun 2019 10:27 AM PDT We just moved to an area in England where only DSL is available with lousy speeds. The router supplied by John Lewis has some horrible reviews. Any recommendations on a replacement I could buy? edit: This 2704N is an ASDL router with only one band I believe. I think the best we can hope for is 8-9 Mbps down. [link] [comments] |
Both laptops only connecting to 144.4Mbps Posted: 01 Jun 2019 10:07 AM PDT I have weird issue with my wireless link speed. If I manually connect to 5GHz then I get link speed of 450mbps, but not every time. It's like random!! I tried 5 times in a row, I got 450Mbps 2 times out of 5. Huh? Wifi modes:
Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I would like to get max link speed available because of daily data transfers between laptops. [link] [comments] |
Looking to make my own network and had a question about VPNs Posted: 01 Jun 2019 10:05 AM PDT So, I'm currently in the process of wiring my network and I had a question about how I should set up my VPN. I currently have modem -> ubiquiti router -> ubiquiti wap's Is there a way I can make the wired sections behind just firewall and the wireless access also behind a VPN? I currently use mullvad but I doubt that matters. This seems tricky so I'm curious if there are any solutions like using two routers or something. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Need Help Tapping Into Wired Network in New Home Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:46 AM PDT Apologies in advance for being a little bit green on the home networking knowledge, but here's my situation... I just recently bought a new house that appears to be prewired but I'm not entirely sure what I'm working with here. I want to hardwire into my network and my built in upstairs desk where I do some gaming has an RJ45 connector in the wall in that area, see picture 1 from gallery below. Downstairs, there is some sort of AT&T Broadband Plate that I'm guessing is where I would ideally need to set my modem/router up. Pictures 3, 4, and 5 will show you what's behind that plate. That green broadband port is just a phone jack but the color coding does line up with my RJ45 connector upstairs. Now AT&T doesn't offer Fiber service to my residence so I went with another provider that does so hopefully that isn't a big deal, but I did try and setup my network through this coax pictured and could never get a connection. I wound up just temporarily setting up my modem/router in a random room in the house that has a coax off by itself and made a connection. If it makes a difference my router/modem is an Arris TG1672G [link] [comments] |
Netgear A6210 disconnects ONLY when downloading games Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:08 AM PDT Sorry if this is the wrong place, hopefully you'll be able to help me. I have a Netgear a6210, and this problem has only started within the last week or so. Whenever I try to download games, it downloads fine for a 3-5 minutes then slowly withers in speed and eventually disconnects my internet. When I look at my network status it shows I'm not connected to internet, but secured. When I disconnect and reconnect I go through the same loop. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, power cycling, looking online for possible solutions, and cannot figure out what to do. I'm running on Windows 10, and haven't downloaded any updates or anything recently that I know of that could cause this issue. I have no problems whatsoever when playing games online, watching youtube, or just general surfing the web. I've had the adapter for probably about 9 months now and the problem has just arisen recently. Thanks in advance for any help! [link] [comments] |

Most Reliable WiFi Extender Brands? Posted: 01 Jun 2019 07:56 AM PDT I'm currently in the market for a WiFi extender for home use, probably a directional antenna, but the problem is that it'll live in another building, in a space I won't have access to, with potential for no one to maintain it for most of the time (it'll be in an apartment above a night club that my landlord owns.) Naturally this means I need the most reliable extender possible, both in terms of longevity and day-to-day up-time. I've done research in other subs (though r/AskElectronics said I was in the wrong place,) and market research outside of Reddit, of course, but when it comes to the challenges of home networking I figured it would be best to ask the experts. Any direction, information, or advice you could offer would be much appreciated, even if it's only which brands to select or stay away from. Thanks in advance! Edit: For context, this is where my PC lives, and this is where my internet comes from. Also context: technically my apartment is wired for internet but I would have to pay for it, and my Landlord's club runs on Google Fiber while my apartment is ineligible. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:59 AM PDT Recently purchased a cheap wireless card for my parents computer that moved into a new place (no more wire). The computer is on the other side of the house compared to the wireless router (came with the provide: videotron here in Quebec, Canada). This is what I bought: At this point, they pretty much had no signal and I suggested they ask the provider to install the modem + router in the middle of the house instead of on one corner or fix it in some other way. The tech person came and installed a wireless extender in the middle of the house. At this point, the signal is OK with the speed being pretty bad. I tried loading a 4k video on youtube, it started player after a little while and ended up pausing. Speed test showed ~10 Mbps down but i think its very shaky. However, an Ipad is getting pretty good speeds ~50 Mbps. Running wires around the house is not an option, I was thinking of getting them a better wirelss card on the PC, Any suggestions on the card (from canadian store) or solutions? [link] [comments] |
Question re: Dnsmasq, Google WiFi and Raspberry Pi. Posted: 01 Jun 2019 05:36 AM PDT Hi everyone! Hoping you can help me with a problem which is driving me mad! I have a single Google WiFi puck (192.168.86.0/24) with a Raspberry Pi (Reserved on 192.168.86.5) connected via a Netgear switch. My goal is straightforward: I would like the Raspberry Pi to function as a local dns cache running Dnsmasq for all devices connected to the Google WiFi. What I have done so far: I have installed Raspbian Stretch Lite on the Pi and installed Dnsmasq with the below config at /etc/dnsmasq.conf My /etc/resolvconf.conf looks like this: I have pointed my Google WiFi's DNS to 192.168.86.5, the IP of the Raspberry Pi. Dnsmasq appears to work when carrying out some basic requests on the PI but not from my Mac or any other device. The lookups on the Pi are 0.x ms but from my laptop there is zero change from configuring 1.1.1.1 directly or via Dnsmasq. It's almost as if the Google WiFi is not Dnsmasq and instead using just the configured upstream servers. I also configured my Mac directly with the ip of the Pi for DNS and it made no difference. Lookup times are still really high. Any ideas how I can get this working? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2019 04:35 AM PDT Hey, You might of seen a post of mine where I'm struggling with dual Nat type etc. My plan is Strip this set up back and re do the entire set up. The set is as follows. Lan into the home via Sky into a sky router, Ethernet connection from sky router to nighthawk R7000p, the nighthawk I want to be my main source of internet due to the lack of power from the sky hub. Devices I want connected; Xbox one x (via Ethernet) 2 smart TV's 2 iPads 2 iPhones 2 laptops 3 Alexa's 6 Hue bulbs + bridge Can anybody give me a simple guide "for newbies" on how the set up should look and how you do it to enable me to have an open NAT on my Xbox for a clean connection and for our devices to work correctly, we can't use twitter for example on the current set up yet we can use Facebook? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I want to do this project tomorrow so any advice now will be perfect! Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Friend can't connect to my teamspeak or gameserver but has never had an issue before Posted: 31 May 2019 07:05 PM PDT Not sure if this is the right subreddit, but I don't really know which one is. I have a couple personal servers at my house, and I am having an issue where my friend who was just connected to my Teamspeak server can no longer connect, nor can he connect to anything at my IP address including my webpage. I have had this issue before and the only solution I found was to force change my IP address by altering the MAC address of my router that was connected to my modem. I can't do this now due to having an AOI modem/router combo(Comcast Xfi Gateway). This is only effecting one person, no one else has issues connecting to my server, and this person was connected without an issue within the past hour, so I am confident it isn't a port issue. He was trying to upload a file to my teamspeak server when it error-ed out. He tried a couple more times before restarting his client, but when he tried reconnecting it wouldn't let him, I am wondering if him trying to send data to my IP address/Teamspeak server" multiple times somehow triggered an IP block from my ISP? Is anyone aware of what could have happened, and if there is such a thing as ISP's blocking 2 IP address from connecting to each other? Is there anyway to fix this? Update: Forcing a change of my external IP address fixed the problem, but it didn't solve the issue as to why he wasn't able to connect to my previous IP. [link] [comments] |
Please help me with Double Nat/UpNp Unsuccessful Posted: 31 May 2019 07:03 PM PDT Hey guys im having a problem with double nat with the two xboxs we have in our house I initially was running the isps modem, to an rtac66u as the router, and an rtac66r as an access point (rtac66u cant reach across the house) So my initial thought was to get rid of the other router well just my luck it actually died on me(over 5 years old) so i used the rtac66u in bridge mode to eliminate nat which got rid of double nat but now I have upnp unsuccessful so i plugged straight into the modem to see if my isp was now supplying their own nat (which they are) but unfortunately they have upnp disabled so i cant do that either so i thought i could maybe disable the nat on the router to use theirs and enable upnp on my side but all that did was disable the nat completely does anyone have an idea what I can do to fix it? I also am waiting on a public ip address from my isp so i can port forward the xbox's because as of right now I cant (sorry for the run on sentence and lack of punctuation in a hurry) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2019 05:41 AM PDT Hello i want to know if i can get wifi signal from about 1.5km away without the access point at the sender end? Only using wifi antenna from my part. NB: one wifi is in clear sight and the other is hidden by a small hill. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2019 12:19 AM PDT Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a new router solution. My router modem combo died a few days ago, it was a TP-Link Archer D7 in wifi only mode as I have FTTP. The Archer D7 did its job but the wifi coverage was spotty in some parts of the upstairs section of the house and the back yard. Ground floor of the house is 300sqm with the upstairs not too far off. Unfortunately, wiring ethernet ports isn't an option for the house at the moment so I'm looking for a router with a strong wifi signal. I was looking at using a mesh system, like google wifi or netgear orbi devices, as a solution but have been reading a bit on the unifi systems- I've been told it is a cheaper alternative but I'm failing to see that if I need to buy a USG, Cloud Key, Switch and WAP. Can I get some feedback on what would be the best solution for me? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to convert this wiring to run RJ-45? Posted: 31 May 2019 06:14 PM PDT I have these eight wires. X2 yellow z X2 orange, X2 blue, X2 light blue. Any tips? Phone wires https://imgur.com/gallery/QhJCye1 [link] [comments] |
Why does 5GHz seem so much slower than 2.4GHz? Posted: 31 May 2019 11:35 PM PDT I'm running an ASUS RT-AC68U (Latest Merlin version) with both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios enabled. This is in a studio apartment but the same trend is noticed in less network-dense areas as well. Also assume full bars of connection for everything. When I use 2.4GHz WiFi, I tend to connect somewhere between 72Mbps and 144Mbps. Speed testing shows little buffer-bloat, <20ms ping, and around 60-70Mbps on my 200Mbps internet. Videos are snapping, pages are quick to respond, especially with the help of my dnsmasq server. When I use 5.0GHz WiFi, It connects around 750Mbps. Speed testing shows the same ping time, less buffer-bloat, and it easily pegs out at 200Mbps (I get about 230, but clip the extra for QoS). But here's where things get weird. When I'm browsing, even the fastest sites like Google will take several seconds to load. Videos feel like they take ages to start playing. When they DO play, the connection is super fast and seems stable. Downloads are super quick, but slow to start. It's basically like all the handshake measures, like DNS lookups, SSL certs, sockets, etc are all slowed way down and flaky, with the connection itself being super speedy. It'll sometimes download a quarter-gig file faster than it will start loading a site. Note that it isn't always like this on 5GHz and sometimes is pretty quick. It's just that it's still quite common and only happens on 5GHz. (Also, windows keeps trying to change back to static settings (from DHCP) on my laptop on 5GHz which is super annoying.) Does it seem like something wrong with my router, the router model itself, a particular setting I can change, or just par for the course with 5GHz? [link] [comments] |
What is The best Router for me? Posted: 31 May 2019 09:22 AM PDT I need a home router for a three story house around the 100$ CAD budget +-15%. My ISP gives me 1Gb/s download speed. Any recommendations would be helpful. I am getting a router for my modem/builtinrshittyrouter instead of getting those wifi mesh pods for deadspots in my house. Edit1: Alot of phones and laptops are connected , we are a family household with my son being a gamer. Edit2: Didn't know the price ranges, sounds like it would be worth to spend the extra dollar to get what I need. So budget is flexible to 200$ now. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2019 01:51 PM PDT Tried a few searches on this topic but couldn't find a solid answer. My area gets a lot of lightning storms during the summer, which can also cause some power surges. In fact, just last year I had an event that fried my modem and my router. Since then I bought an APC UPS and have my electronics plugged into it. After buying my UPS I did some more research and found out the coax cable can also be a source of surge via lightning. I'm assuming my event was via the power outlet since both devices were fried (and were both plugged into the same outlet). I'm currently renting my house and the owner has a wire sunk into the ground that is shoddily wrapped around the coax cable. The exterior cable is exposed (not in a box) and connected to the power/cable lines above the house. See pic for the current state. https://i.imgur.com/d7Sy7sF.jpg My question: Is this wire connection good enough or should I invest in a male/male coax lightning arrestor with a proper terminal for grounding? If so, any recommendations? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Internet keeps dropping, how to tell if its my modem or home wiring. Posted: 31 May 2019 09:52 PM PDT My internet cuts out throughout the day but always comes back on withing 10 minutes. The problem mainly occurs in the morning and late at night. I have comcast with a netgear c7000v2 thats updated. When my internet goes out it effects both my wired connection to my desktop as well as all the wifi devices. Im thinking it might be something to do with my home wiring. Are there any tests i can do other than calling comcast and having them check the wiring? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
