new i7-8700k came out of the box with thermal paste residue on it Posted: 31 May 2019 03:21 PM PDT Just picked up some new parts from my local Microcenter. The i7-8700k I bought has immediately noticeable thermal paste residue on it. I mean, I noticed this instantly while I was laying in bed in a low-lit room. Has anyone experienced this? Microcenter keeps their CPU in different location than the box they advertise with. So the box was not sealed. But I did in fact pay for a new CPU, though. Here is a picture. https://i.imgur.com/0jfSdxv.jpg EDIT UPDATE: The CPU was returned easily. The employees were nice and helpful and I now have a NEW UNOPENED i7-8700k. The did confirm the unit I received was used but did not elaborate on how it ended up in my bag. No worries. All resolved. The gift card issue on the other hand is a bit complex. On my first visit we were shuffled to multiple registers to get the card "working" when in reality 2 of the 3 cards I had were "used" on the first register..... Long story short. We will be communicating with the General Manager to resolve this issue because the in store workers don't have the authority or tools required to sort this out. They understand and acknowledge the issue and are wanting to help resolve anyway they can. I think I was incredibly unlucky with my visit today. Trips in the past have yielded good parts and prices. **Final note: I made this thread because I was unsure about the CPU shipping with thermal paste on it. Hopefully, with the attention this thread got, people will now be able to google a similar issue and have a good thread with reasonable responses. Thank you all who meaningfully contributed. No output from new GTX 1660, please help Posted: 31 May 2019 01:00 AM PDT UPDATE: Problem seems fixed, i explain it at the end of the post! I'll try to summarise what is going on right now, but i myself am completely out of ideas of what could be wrong. I've been gaming on an am3+ socket system for like 5 years now, using an amd 8320 CPU and GTX 760 2gb GPU. Since my GPU was running kind of hot lately and the 2gb VRAM didn't quite hold up anymore i decided to upgrade to a GIGABYTE GTX 1660 6GB OC that i got in the mail, brand new, on wednesday. I deleted my old drivers, put it in my system and to my surprise i did't get any output to my monitor via HDMI. The fans were spinning just fine, there was just no signal. After some research i found out that the chipset in my motherboard, amd 760GA, was not compatible with modern gpu's. It seemed that the amd 970 chipset was compatible with modern gpu's while still having an am3+ chipset. So i ordered a new motherboard, an ASRock 970M Pro3 and it arrived this morning. Once i had everything ready for a dry run i saw the same result: All fans were spinning just fine, but i still had no output signal going to my monitor. I tried using my old GTX 760 again and it works just fine, it posts and shows me the mobo's boot menu. All using the same HDMI cable and 1080p monitor. In the bios it sais that uefi is enabled and i've tried all other bootup modes, and all give the same result: the 760 works fine, the 1660 gives no output signal. So now that ive tried everything i can think of i really hope someone here can help me. The motherboard should be compatible with the GPU, the pcie slots both work fine with my old 760, the fans on my new 1660 spin fine once power up the system but it won' give me any signal output to my monitor. TL;DR: Brand new gtx 1660 6gb gives no output signal with brand new, compatible, am3+ 970 chipset mobo, while old gtx 760 gives output and gets me in the boot menu whitout any problems. Tried all bootup modes and pcie slots but results stay the same. The fans spin, but no signal output to my monitor from the 1660. UPDATE: So angrily i still put the system together after the failed dry run, since i not only bought a new mobo buy also a new case and ssd to have a clean system and tried to run it again, but it didn't work. Then i noticed that i forgot that i was using an hdmi to bga adapter because my monitor didn't natively support hdmi. I didn't think it would do anything but i tried connecting my pc to my TV wich did support hdmi and turned it on: it worked. I don't know why or how, but the adapter seems to be the wrongdoer here. I am now installing all drivers amd everything, i'll check back with the monitor later. For now everything seems to work. [link] [comments] |
[build complete] Here to ruin my life with WoW all over again! Posted: 31 May 2019 11:55 AM PDT Hey everybody. Just a couple weeks ago I decided to build my own computer. After a LOT of research, some advice from u/Veness and friends, I got it right on the first try and everything is rockin' and rollin'! Pic: https://imgur.com/gallery/gxX3pCr I haven't gotten around to messing with the RBGs yet, but that will come in time. I have my OS, drivers, Microsoft office, etc downloaded, and I did a benchmark on userbenchmark.com. Any advice on other things I ought to do? The prices on the parts have jumped around quite a bit since I got them, but here they are so you at least have an idea what's in there. I needed all new peripherals which drove my cost up quite a bit, but they all should last for quite a while! Old vs New PWM Fan connectors on Prebuilt HP LGA1155 board Posted: 31 May 2019 03:19 PM PDT I bought a refurbished HP 8300 with an Ivy Bridge i5 for my family to use, and after adding an SSD and unplugging the DVD drive, the system fan/CPU fan (one in the same on this PC) was still pretty noisy so I bought a Noctua fan to replace it. But when I took out the old fan and tried to put the Noctua in... it wouldn't fit (Old fan to the left). Looking at the old fan it seems to be rated for 12V 0.40A while the Noctua is 12V 0.08A. And the wires are the same colors in the same order on each fan. Would the new fan still work? How would I even find a new fan with this type of plug? [link] [comments] |

Gaming Mice upgrade recommendations Posted: 31 May 2019 02:33 AM PDT Hello. I would like some advice on what is a good gaming mouse. So far is was on a Deathadder for 5 years which was replaced with a Deathadder Chroma that lasted about 2.5 and now i'm on a Red Dragon centrophorus (which when googling for the spelling I see is some sort of fish family, which makes sense as all their other stuff has scary creature names and this mouse I think is the cheapest thing they sell.) The Red Dragon mouse was filler and now that I have savings i've been looking at the Logitech g502 and Steelseries Rival 600. I know very little about these two brands. I'm also thinking of replacing Logitech keyboard with a Steel series m750. Some Logitech g series mechanical keyboard. Very open to other brands. If there is non-gaming branded stuff that works just as well please let me know. EDIT: Thanks for all the useful suggestions everybody. Really didn't expect to get this many answers and with such detail. Awesome sub this. Learnt a lot about what's out there and prioritising what I want in a mouse. Have great weekends. Will the new Ryzen 3000 series need a bios update to work on B450? Posted: 31 May 2019 11:50 AM PDT My friend bought a Asus Strix B450-F and he doesn't have an AMD CPU, but he is getting the 3000. Will he need to do a bios update to make the PC work? [link] [comments] |
Just upgraded to Ryzen 2600 from i5 4690 Posted: 31 May 2019 05:16 PM PDT What do you recommend? I've heard that formatting the C drive is recommended, what do you suggest? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 May 2019 11:41 PM PDT Hi guys, i'm about to do my first build and noticed the i5-9600k is about $100 more than the i5-9400.. is 9600k worth the price then? And/or are there other cpus (like ryzen) that are better for the same price, that you can recommend? Rig is intended for some casual gaming, though it has to support Dragon Age: Inquisition on ultra for my wife's mods to be on ^ My build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/byRJhy Thanks in advance :-) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2019 03:26 PM PDT Hey everyone! I just built a new computer and it's the first time I try a m.2 ssd. The problem is that the SSD is no where to be found in the BIOS and in Windows (both installer and the OS). It actually showed once in the Windows installer and I was able to start the installation, however when the computer rebooted during the process I never was able to see it again. I tried a lot of troubleshooting steps such as clearing the CMOS, using the second m.2 socket, removing PCIe cards (except the graphics card), several BIOS options (CSM, safeboot, etc.) I also had no other drives (except the flash drive for the Windows installer) or SATA devices connected when attempting to make it work. My motherboard is an Asus prime x470 pro and my SSD is a Crucial P1 1tb. Do you have any troubleshooting steps I could try? Otherwise, could the SSD be faulty? Thanks in advance for your help!! :) [link] [comments] |
Motherboards.. what's the difference? Posted: 31 May 2019 07:03 AM PDT I was watching a video where someone was showing some of the new ROG motherboards and he said "it has all the features gamers look for." What features would gamers look for on a motherboard as opposed to others??? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 May 2019 07:13 PM PDT I just want to switch my motherboard to a smaller one for a small form factor console killer build I'm doing but I am unsure about what will happen if I remove the cpu, gpu, ram, storage- ect and put it all on a new motherboard. I especially worried about the cpu. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2019 07:12 PM PDT Hi all, this is my current build of the PC I am making for gaming in 4K and 60fps. I am stuck on RGB which is why the build is about $200 more than it should be. Otherwise, let me know what could be better, please be brutally honest [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 May 2019 04:47 PM PDT How would I install both a SSD and a HDD, I would like Windows and everything for the boot up to be on the SSD for maximum and everything in the Downloads folder to be on the HDD. How would I do this? [link] [comments] |
For people that bought used graphics cards, how was your experience? I'm looking at a GTX 1080ti Posted: 31 May 2019 06:59 PM PDT It's ridiculous how new or like new cards are going for $1-1.3k when used are going for $450-600. I'm wondering if maybe a lot of people have had a good experience or bad experience. Can anyone that has upgraded from a worse card to a used 1080ti can chime in? I'm building my first pc and going for the best graphics card for blender, gaming and code, so I figure its the 1080 ti. I see a lot of cards like EVGA with over a year warranty left being sold for $500. Is it too good to be true [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2019 06:29 PM PDT I was always interested in building a PC, but in 2017-2018, GPU prices were way too expensive. Now, everything is much more affordable, and I decided to switch to PC because I couldn't play Fortnite competitively on a console anymore. I got to say, I'm extremely happy with my build. Everything worked first try, and the build took about 8 hours, but I spent months researching parts. I plan on grabbing a Ryzen 3600 later in the summer, but I'm really happy with the 1600's performance, especially when OC'd to 3.9ghz at 1.3V. The easiest parts of building were the CPU, Ram, GPU, and installing the motherboard to the case. What took me the longest was the PSU, it was very hard to screw it into the case, but I ended up getting it to go after a bit. I was also nervous because I wasn't sure which way the cables went into the psu, but thanks to the buildapc Discord they told me that the "type 4" end goes into the PSU. The SSD was a pain in the *** to install aswell because the SATA cable wasn't straight, but it all worked out. The best part of this build though, has to be playing at 144hz. It's amazing. When I cap my framerate to 60fps, it looks like a slideshow now. I also wasted a lot of time on dumb stuff like not screwing something hard enough the first time because I was scared or not finding the case screws. I overspent on some parts, but I wanted upgradibility too. Shoutout to Micro Center for the CPU and Mobo deals as well as the GPU sale. If you are considering building a PC, do it! If a 16 year old can, so can you. Its super fun, and while not as easy as some people make it out to be, it is pretty easy once you get into the flow of things. Also, don't be scared. I even dropped the screwdriver on my mobo a couple times and wore socks and no antistatic wristband and everything worked fine. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2019 06:24 PM PDT Hi guys. I'm doing a 20 PC setup, with each pc in need of around 350w and 650w Gold PSU. I wanted to protect them against any possible surge, but I have no idea how many SSU or UPS per PC I would need to do this. What considerations should I take? Should I start with SSU and then go to UPS? I know that there are different types of UPS and, according to this site, I would only be interested in Standby or Line-interactive. Any insight would be very appreciated. Budget for this would be around 2k USD max. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2019 04:10 PM PDT I currently have 16gbs of DDR4 3000mhz Corsair RGB ram (2x8) and I was wondering if I could put my extra two sticks of PNY Anarchy DDR4 2133mhz (max oc of 2800mhz) in my remaining to slots if I slowed/speed them all down/up to 2400mhz. Is this beneficial or will it make a difference and more importantly.. is it possible? [link] [comments] |

Ryzen 5 2600x with RX 570 vs Ryzen 5 2600 with RX 580 Posted: 31 May 2019 06:14 PM PDT Which build will be better for gaming? This would be my first build and both are basically the same price. One has a stronger cpu with weaker gpu and vice versa. I am looking for an opinion on which build is better overall for gaming. Thank you! Build list included: [link] [comments] |
PC for Data Analysis and VR Porn Posted: 31 May 2019 06:09 PM PDT Build Help/Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Mostly data processing and statistical analysis using R. I'll be dealing with upwards of 200 billion data points. (~2 TB) If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) I will do some gaming as well, so this PC has to be VR ready. What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? Less than $2,000 to start, but leave room to expand later. In what country are you purchasing your parts? USA. There's a Micro Center 6 miles from my house. Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). Provide any additional details you wish below. I don't have time to stay up-to-date with hardware advances, so this build probably isn't too good. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
