This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

How Building a PC turns from hobby to addiction

    Posted: 30 May 2019 01:46 PM PDT

Hey everyone. I'm going to explain, mostly based on my own opinion and experience, why PC Building hooks so many people and blurs the line between hobby and obsession. To new and experienced users alike, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Disclaimer: This is not a commentary on any really high-end PCs. This is for your everyday mid-budget user.

Lets start out with the first build. Suppose you want to ditch that old clunker of a laptop you used in school and want a proper stationary PC. Or you want a dedicated gaming unit because your kids can't help but spill juice all over that old HP from 2005. Well, you're going to go out and buy absolutely every part. This is what turns a lot of people off, because the cost for everything is so high. Just in mandatory stuff (Monitor, Chair, Keyboard+Mouse, power supply, OS, etc) you can look at $500, and that's before you start picking all the interesting components.

I built a budget PC last year based on the Ryzen 3 2200G. I liked it. It was modern, it ran what I needed it to run, and it was cheap. A lot of my parts were used (The PSU I had, The case, the KB+M, a really old 720p monitor, chair, desk, etc). After about a month, I felt the itch to upgrade. First was a new monitor. Then a newer case. Then some case modding materials. Then a new chair. Then a discrete GPU for handling some more modern games that the 2200G couldn't. This quickly turned from a project, to a day-to-day interest.

The general community, be it this forum, stackexchange, tom's hardware, Linus tech tips, gamersnexus, etc makes it really, really easy to stay informed on the most modern parts. We're bombarded with ads for the latest and greatest, which is great for enthusiasts, and maybe not so great for our bank accounts. That's the first reason that PC building can turn to addiction. Because so many outside influencers are telling us about the latest and greatest, and keeping us informed on things like quality of parts, brands, features, etc.

As mentioned, the initial investment in the PC will be the biggest cost and will turn off a lot of users. It can run you anywhere from $400 all the way up to $2000. Personally, I spent $750 Canadian on my first PC -- but this included two monitors ($300), and Windows ($130). So the PC itself was rather inexpensive. I've added about $200 on top of that, with the discrete GPU.

So, why is this itch to upgrade so strong amongst PC enthusiasts? I argue that, no matter what parts you have, one of your parts, from the CPU to the headphones, will always lag behind. One part will always be the oldest/least performing. And that's what you focus on. It can't be helped. You could have a really nice, modern CPU and GPU, but you'll always focus on that 2400MHz RAM, that old, worn-out chair, that 60hz monitor, Those crappy $20 headphones or speakers, etc. And it's relatively cheap to upgrade one single part. New RAM? Less than $100. New Chair? You can get away with $200 for a good mesh-back 8-hour rated chair. New keyboard+mouse? Deals can be had for less than $100. The cost after the build is so low compared to the initial investment that it makes it a lot less tough of a pill to swallow by dropping $100 here or there, compared to $750+.

This adds up, and becomes a snowball effect. And the more you open up that case and tinker around, the more you learn, and the more you want to learn. From the perspective of the PC builder, upgrading that lagging component can completely change your experience. Upgrading to an SSD for $50 can make your computer 3X as fast compared to your old HDD. So, for $50, you essentially just changed your entire experience. Upgrading your clunky old chair you got at a yard sale to a nice $200-300 chair can completely change your experience. Upgrading that $20 Logitech keyboard to a $120 mechanical can completely change your experience.

It's not just the CPU and GPU that make the PC user's experience. It's everything working together. The weakest link in the chain is always the one that gets the most attention. Upgrading the weakest link is often very cheap (Unless that weak link is a GPU, and you want a 2080Ti), and will change your experience immensely. By spending $100-300 every few months, it feels like a brand new experience to the user. And that's what makes it so addicting.

First PC Rig. What to do once it is fully built and turned on for the first time ?

    Posted: 30 May 2019 04:27 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

So I'm building my first pc rig (for Deep Learning : Threadripper 1920X ; RTX 2080 Ti ; MSI SLI Plus) today and through my lengthy research for all the parts, I've come across many things that I sensed were important or useful to consider in order to fully optimize my PC.

    I've seen :
    - XMP Extreme Memory Profile => what is it ? how do I set it up ?
    - MSI Afterburner => Same questions.
    - I've seen people talk about monitoring each part's health by watching temperature and other parameters. How can I do that ? Which software do I need to use for that.
    - Also seen folks talking about setting up fan curves. What can I use to do that too ? and how to know which curve to make ?

I don't have anything else in mind right now but am sure there are tons of other useful softwares or configurations to make at the first use. Could you guys guide me a bit on all these things and maybe advise me on stuff that you deem relevant to this matter ?

    Thanks a lot

PC turns on and then off immediately after

    Posted: 30 May 2019 12:08 PM PDT

http://imgur.com/gallery/FHgCial I am making a build for my friend. I tested parts outside the case like usual but when I went to turn it on the fans turned on and then off right after. I tried a different PSU and same issue. All cables, ram, cpu were resested. Is this just an unlucky faulty motherboard? PSU's are very confusing

    Posted: 30 May 2019 12:15 PM PDT

I was looking into PSU's from the 600-650 range, so that I have room for upgrades whenever I choose to upgrade my pc. I was going to get an EVGA g3 650, but then saw that it made a loud coil whining noise. Also someone had told me that their EVGA PSU blew out on them after only 4 months of use, so I am extremely confused as to what PSU to get and whether or not it will be reliable? (Just for reference my build currently uses around 300 watts.)

PC boot up automatically after flipping PSU switch

    Posted: 30 May 2019 11:47 AM PDT

    Hello There,

I have an issue with my AsRock AB350 Gaming K Motherboard as it is getting boot up automatically afterpp flipping power switch from PSU without having to any feedback on power button on cabinet.

Main issue is that with that Graphics card not booting up and hence blank screen. I have tried with resetting BIOS by removing battery but no improvement in it.

I am not sure what created this trouble as rest of all components are working just fine.

    What to do? Any suggestions?

Question about installing OS on SSD while still having an HDD with an OS

    Posted: 30 May 2019 03:17 PM PDT

Okay well didnt really find answers by googling so here I am Reddit!

Basically I want to know if I can install a fresh OS on an SSD while using my OLD HDD as storage but without wiping the hard drive; meaning the old OS & all the programs/files are still on the HDD.

Reason I don't want to clone the HDD to the SSD is because buying an SSD big enough to clone the HDD is pretty expensive right now.

Closest AMD motherboard manufacturer to EVGA's customer support?

    Posted: 30 May 2019 03:00 PM PDT

    Simple question.

What board partner on the AMD side is considered the "EVGA" of board partners when it comes to support?

I'm switching to AMD in my new build but I'd like to switch to a company that provides good support if something goes wrong. I'm willing to pay a slight premium for that like I do with EVGA products. EVGA has a support process that allows me to submit tickets that are answered within a business day or faster, and I also am able to call them 24/7 and get a live representative that is within the US (bless the man who takes those calls).

What AMD motherboard manufacturer would you consider the closest to EVGA when it comes to this kind of service?

Built a new pc and got some issues

    Posted: 30 May 2019 11:41 AM PDT

Hey guys, I need some help with my setup.

I bought my new components for a new pc. I started to build it up with a friend of my who has some experience, after we finished and installed windows 10, the pc ran for a couple of hours before shuting down.

So, I was playing some League of Legends, and at one point of the game the pc shut down and restarted alone quickly, I didn't pay to much attention to it since I was thinking that it might have been an update that I didn't notice.

After 2 hours, I decided to play Assassin's Creed and after something like 30 secondes in the game, the pc shut down and when it went to restart, black screen, the keyboard and mouse off yet the fan was running, same for the graphic card and all the leds coming from the case to the motherboard were working. The little green light on the motherboard is up

I tried to take of the hdd, I verified that each cable is well put and fine, I have no idea on what to do, I need some help guys :(

    Here is my setup:

    -Intel Core i5 9600K (3.7 GHz)
    -Asus PRIME Z390-A
-MSI GeForce RTX 2070 ARMOR 8G OC, 8 Go
    -EVGA 600 BR, 600W
    -Seagate BarraCuda, 2 To
-Corsair Carbide SPEC-06 RGB Tempered Glass, Blanc
-Western Digital WD Blue 3D NAND SSD, 500 Go, M.2 (Type 2280)
    -Enermax ETS-T50 AXE
    -DDR4 Corsair Vengeance LPX, Blanc, 16 Go (2 x 8 Go), 3000 MHz, CAS 15

Is my setup fully compatible, am i wasting money on stuff i shouldn't need?

    Posted: 30 May 2019 04:30 PM PDT

Hi, I'm very new here and I've just started getting into learning how to build a PC, I've been watching youtube videos and reading stuff online just to learn the basics. I've still got a lot to learn though

I need help for identifying if I'm wasting money on certain parts or if there is some stuff that isn't compatible between the monitor and the PC in terms of FPS/Hz and that kinda stuff

I'll be using my PC with a Dual Monitor Setup for, entry level CAD (Autodesk + Photoshop) , gaming, research and revising (and the occasional youtube videos)

Will my build be able to run two monitors smoothly? these are the kinda questions i don't know the answer to

GPU clearance in an NZXT H500

    Posted: 30 May 2019 04:30 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I am wanting to do a build with and vertical gpu cause I'm into that sort of thing.

An H500 has a max GPU clearance of 381 mm. An Aorus RTX 2070 is 290 mm in length. The Vertical mounting bracket adds 31 mm to the length of the card. My Kraken X52 is 56 mm including the fans. So the card will be 321 mm long with the 56 mm AIO cooler (377 mm total leaving 4 mm to work with after all is installed). Will this fit ok or will the card be touching the front radiator?

    Any input is appreciated thanks!

What to upgrade- graphics card or CPU

    Posted: 30 May 2019 02:15 PM PDT

A few days ago I made a post asking for help because my PC has trouble running more than 1 thing at a time. People told me I should upgrade my cpu, but a friend told me that a graphics card upgrade might be better because its a 3gb. I was thinking gpu but I dont know which one.

    Specs:

    Intel Core i3-6100

    MSI H110 Gaming

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

    Question about clock speed

    Posted: 30 May 2019 02:04 PM PDT

I keep seeing everyone saying it would be good for the new ryzen to hit 5ghz to compare to Intel hitting 5ghz.

But aren't the processors totally different, I always assumed that one processor could have a slower clock speed but perform better on tasks because of superior architecture?

    Can anyone enlighten me?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

My PC consistently crashes when my GPU hits around 70C degrees. All the monitors lose signal, there is no sound from speakers, no indication the PC is still running aside from the case fans & lights still going. It doesn't seem to matter which game or benchmark, as soon as it hits around this temperature it crashes.

For example, I play Rocket League in 1440p High settings and with the fps limit set to the default of 65, my GPU never hits 70C (stays around 60-65) and I can play like that all day. In my testing, I slowly bumped that FPS cap up until my GPU hit 70C and then it crashes.

I have tried fresh driver installs with DDU.

I have tried increasing the power limit in Radeon Wattman settings.

I have tried running games in Ubuntu dual-boot instead of Windows 10.

I have cleaned all the radiators/ fans/ filters with compressed air.

I have run the Heaven benchmark on my GPU and my CPU's iGPU. It ran poorly on my iGPU, as expected, but it crashed in minutes on my graphics card.

My PSU should be decent enough, so I don't know if that's a prime suspect right now. My next guess is to refresh the thermal paste on my GPU and see if that helps. Other than that I'm guessing my GPU is dying.

Any Advice on my situation would be greatly appreciated.
