    Simple Questions - May 29, 2019

    Posted: 29 May 2019 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I'm on my 4th 2080Ti and it just went bad, need somewhere to vent

    Posted: 29 May 2019 11:37 AM PDT

I knew when buying all my parts the failure rates on these cards were abnormally high but I also heard it was mostly related to the Nvidia models and not so much the 3rd party models. Nevertheless I went for it because I don't like to play the upgrade game so I go for top of the line components when I can afford it.

I went with the EVGA 2080Ti Black edition, which is their cheapest option. I went "cheap" (if $1100 is considered cheap..) because I only wanted the extra VRAM (over the 2080) and not the factory OC crap for which they charge extra.

    Here's the story:

    1) Number one was DoA with a black screen. Or so I thought. This was maybe (probably) my fault - the second came in the same way and after getting video on a different monitor I adjusted my cables and found I got a display.

    2) Number two worked for about a week before it started to crash to black screen during gameplay. The fans would start spinning to 100% and only rebooting would change anything. The card was almost hot enough to the touch for a first degree burn.

    3) Number three was DoA with a code 43 in Windows. This is one of those little yellow "!" in your device manager by the display adapter. Searching for this problem reveals it's either a driver issue or hardware issue. When changing drivers the screen would black out (as usual) but produce pink "-" marks all over the screen (not usual).

    4) The current card worked the best; I've had this one for almost a month and thought I was out of the storm. Randomly last week it decided it didn't like DirectX games anymore. I frequently use two games that use DX and they are both on different versions. Both of them throw out error dialogs and crash after being in-game for about a minute or less. Then this week games started to lag heavily and got to the point my whole PC would freeze, screens go black temporarily, and different open windows like Chrome or Discord would flash black for a few seconds. Swapping to a different card makes both of these problems vanish. I also noticed EVGA sent me an upgrade - the newest card is a Black XC version. These versions have a vbios update which I performed (see more here). This card like the one before it is also extremely and abnormally hot to the touch after some use. This time, however, the GPU itself doesn't overheat, only the rest of the card. By default I understand the fans only spin if the GPU temp reaches 61C, so basically the card is cooking itself since it doesn't see a need to spin the fans. I have the EVGA Precision X1 software installed and have set the fans to an aggressive RPM - the problem with this is that the software seems to revert to default settings every time the PC is booted regardless if I've saved the profile. The other problem is that the program needs to be running in the first place to get custom fan RPM.

EVGA had me check PSU voltage to make sure it's not faulty; I'm getting consistent 11.9v on the 12v rail and I'm using two separate 8-pin cables to power the GPU. I don't believe it's power related since the issues are all different. I've done CPU over/under clocking, CPU undervolting and changed RAM frequency just to troubleshoot other components. I'm at my wits' end with these things, I cannot even believe I am this unlucky since I know there's plenty of people that haven't had any issues. I started this build late January and still don't have a fully working PC.

    Specs:

    NCase M1

    Asus X470-i

    AMD 2700X

    G.Skill Trident Z Royal 32GB (3200mhz)

    Samsung 970 EVO 2TB NVMe

    Corsair SF750 (Platinum)

The bottom fans are intake to the GPU.

Huge shoutout to EVGA customer service, I can't recommend any other brand.

It finally happened! Found a sealed Pentium G4560 for $35 at thrift store!

    Posted: 28 May 2019 06:51 PM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/64B8o8o.jpg

I make weekly visits to my local Value Village to hopefully find either cool stuff I want, great deals, or things to resell. I've seen some old graphics cards, motherboards, and processors before; all of it junk. Every whole computer will always have Windows XP or Vista and an Athlon or Atom processor.

I've been dreaming of one day finding a GTX 10XX series graphics card, but today I got the next best thing: an actually relevant CPU that is also sealed!

Check your local thrift stores, my fellow PC builders. Sometimes gold can show up! Now I need to decide if I want to use this new $35 processor for an actual build. Either a Linux PC or retro emulator.

First time building... how do I deal with drivers? I didn’t get a CD drive.

    Posted: 29 May 2019 10:19 AM PDT

Is it worth getting a 2080? I’m trying to game 1080p 144hz and be able to have games now on high or ultra. I want the card to last me at least 2-4 years.

    Posted: 29 May 2019 06:53 AM PDT

I also use my computer for 3D rendering and video game design.

    UPDATE: I'm getting a 2080

PC Flatlines at 2 FPS in some games

    Posted: 29 May 2019 02:10 PM PDT

I'm posting this here because I have no idea where else to ask. I've searched online but there doesn't seem to be an answer. Basically, when playing certain games (PUBG and Mordhau) my PC runs perfectly fine at 60 FPS. Then, out of nowhere, my PC flatlines and goes to 2 fps. It wont stop until I quit the game. It also isn't just the game. I've noticed that my other monitor that doesn't have the game running also runs at a lower framerate. It doesn't seem to be a heating problem as my temperature averages between 40 C to 60 C. This isn't a new PC either: I've had it for about a year and never had this problem until now. The only change I've made is installing new case fans and changing the case and PSU. The PC was fine for a couple weeks after the case change. I have no idea what to do.

    Basic parts list:

    EVGA GeForce 960 SSC 4GB

    Ryzen 5 2600

    HyperX 2666 mHz 16GB (2 x 8)

GTX 1660 Ti vs RTX 2060 for 1080p 165Hz gaming

    Posted: 29 May 2019 08:48 AM PDT

Hey guys! First post on Reddit so hopefully I don't do too badly haha

So I've had a GTX 960 SSC for a couple years now. I usually played games like BF4/1, R6S, Warframe, and some MMORPGs. Most of these games I could run on pretty high settings, but I capped closer to 60-80 FPS. My monitor is able to run at 165Hz, so it would be nice to have a GPU that can match its power.

I've used the GTX 960 SSC thru a few builds, starting from my first custom built with an FX 6300 that I OC'd to my current Ryzen 5 2600 build.

So far, the GTX 1660 Ti and the RTX 2060 have caught my eye, but I am open to using AMD. The last time I used one was on a prebuilt that I added an R7 250 and "CrossFired" it with the AMD APU the PC had, so it shows how long I may have been out of the potential AMD graphics game.

Any thoughts are appreciated since I consider myself still a beginner at PC building but I do love the research for the best deals =]

How young to build a PC?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 02:19 PM PDT

My daughter is 4 and I would love to build a computer with her so she can have something to call her own, with her own games and everything. I want her to grow up like I did with my first 486 when I was about 6.

I think I could at least walk her through the build process and then end up with something with games on it (starting out with DOS or Win 98 would be so cool...we'll see). She may end up even knowing what a lot of the components are as she understands the concept of electricity/batteries, and can kindof use a mouse.

So has anyone else build a rig with their young kids and how old were they?

First Ever Build for 3D Animation

    Posted: 29 May 2019 12:54 PM PDT

Below are all the parts I have planned. This is my first time making my own PC so I had some help from a friend. I thought I'd post what I'm getting to this thread before pretty much blindly purchasing all these parts.

Part picker says everything is compatible, and as far as I know all this stuff seems to be what I need. I will be doing a lot of 3D animating and modelling/sculpting. What I've read is that you don't need a lot of cores for this, but less, stronger ones. If anybody's got some wisdom to share, please be my guest.

Also this is my first time using Reddit ever.

Small screw fell into GPU while installing.

    Posted: 29 May 2019 10:23 AM PDT

    Basically the title.

Small screw for the case fell into the GPU while I was installing it. My hand just slipped. I shook it somewhat fairly vigorously to get it out. Everything works fine and the computer boots up fine. Timespy numbers also seem to be fine.

Basically I was wondering if my shaking+the screw falling in could've damaged anything that isn't serious enough to stop the card from working.

Trying to build the foundation of a 1440p 144HZ gaming set up with $1K.

    Posted: 29 May 2019 10:03 AM PDT

I just have a thousand dollars for a set up atm, and basically all I know about computer building is from Linus Tech Tips on YouTube. I don't want to get used parts or use Craigslist because I feel like I'm too ignorant about this and I'm gonna fuck it up somehow.

My plan is to buy the parts of a full computer with this grand and then slowly upgrade it over the next few months.

What sort of components should I be going for? My dream is to use the computer to play AAA Games on 1440p Ultra @60fps at least and play online games like Rocket League, Overwatch and Apex Legends with max settings at 1440p @140fps.

Is this achievable? My current system is a late 2016 Razer Blade with a 1060 and I'm pretty sure I can build a PC with a grand that can out perform that with a little help.

I've gone to a best buy and spoke to a computer guy there and they said things like the i9 and GTX 2080 wouldn't get me to where I want to. I know nothing about processors or motherboards except that I shouldn't use too much thermal paste and that I need an anti-static wristband.

I was thinking that maybe I'd start with a 1080Ti and if it fits my budget, 2 of them with an SLI bridge. I don't want to do water cooling atm and I'll upgrade to RGB thingies later on.

Where do I start? I've given my self 2 weeks to do research and buy all the parts and my sleep deprived semi-blazed brain thought this post should be my first step.

    Ryzen 5 2600x vs Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 29 May 2019 11:29 AM PDT

The 2600x is clocked exactly like the 3600 whereas the 3600 has larger cache sizes, lesser TDP and better architecture. Considering the price, the 2600x is ~$20 cheaper and is fairly compatible with all B350 motherboards.

So keeping all points in mind, for what kind of use cases should the 2600x be preferred over the 3600?

Need help with a build for my dad

    Posted: 29 May 2019 01:05 PM PDT

    Hey guys.

A while a go I ran a build by this subreddit and I was given great advice which ended up in this, which I've been super happy with.

Now, my dad's iMac of like 10 years has died, and I've managed to persuade him to build himself a windows pc instead of spending 2k bucks on a new imac.

I need something good and reliable, a PC that's fast and steady with a decent amount of RAM. He doesn't really play video games but he did ask for a half-decent graphics card, I guess because he enjoys a good movie or show.

He'll do work on this PC, albeit not too frequently; his work consists mostly of office-related work, as he's a real estate agent, so nothing that requires video-editing and the likes. Honestly, I think processing power (and core number) and high and fast RAM are the main concerns for a computer for him.

I've come up with this, which has some similarities to my own PC, but I wanted opinions and suggestions. I'm not particularly fond of this case for this particular build (although I love it in my build). I think it's a bit overkill and oversized for the components I've picked here.

His budget limit is about €1500, but we have to get him a good monitor as well, so I'd prefer to stay around the €1000 range.

Anyone know where I can get a hold of some Rosewill Power supply cables?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 04:31 PM PDT

I was recently given a power supply as a hand-me down gift from my brother. Its a Rosewill power supply, as stated earlier. Specifically Model SL-F600 600w, with removable cables. Coming here was not my main source of info, as I did go to the main site when looking. There wasn't anything there. I don't exactly want to go out and buy a whole new power supply, so does anyone know where I can pick them up?
