This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

OutletPC: garbage company, staffed by garbage people

    Posted: 03 May 2019 02:57 PM PDT

My $450 worth of items was shipped to the wrong address. I have contacted OutletPC and they told me that the address was correct on their end, and that there was nothing they could do and to contact my bank instead.

My bank told me that since the payment has gone through there was nothing they can do on their end.

I contacted USPS and they informed me that the package was a 1 ounce box (I ordered a CPU, RAM sticks and a hard drive), shipped to a street address that not even USPS was sure existed, and that it was already delivered to somebody. They opened an investigation case and will look into it further. They claimed the odds of the address being wrong on their end was rather slim, since they received a postage stamp with that address given by the sender.

I contacted OutletPC again to let them know what's up, only to be transferred to the first guy who then proceeded to tell me to contact my bank and there was nothing he could do, and then promptly hung up on me.

If you're looking for trash tier customer service and being out $450, then look no further than OutletPC.

UPDATE: I called them again. The guy left me on hold for 25+ minutes, then cut off the call. They stopped picking up the phone after I redialed. I have requested a chargeback through my bank. Fuck OutletPC and fuck the pieces of shit they hire for customer service.

Noob here in desperate need of help

    Posted: 03 May 2019 02:07 PM PDT

So around 5 months my friend helped build a PC. I spent about $1500. The day after it was completed I noticed every 2 or 3 hours it would freeze for 4 to 7 seconds( sound and mouse cut out but it always recovers). After this problem continued me and my friend did as much trouble shooting as we could and everything pointed to the motherboard because some people who bought the same one as me around the same time has similar issues and replacing it fixed the problem. I took it to a professional place and they said their best guess was the ram.3 months later and a new motherboard and new ram this problem still occurs. I've updated all drivers and bios and am running out of options. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!.

    Guess I don’t Kno Jack

    Posted: 03 May 2019 08:53 AM PDT

Long story short I was under the impression a 1050ti doesn't need an additional power supply but then I go on eBay and type in gtx 1050ti start browsing the cards only to see some ti's require that 6pin. I wanted to game lightly without forking money for a PSU and card. Cause if I have to get a PSU then I might as well upgrade card also. I just wanted a 990 optiplex and 1050ti but it seems I'm looking at the wrong ones. If anybody has like 3 mins to spare can you link me to a US eBay page with a 1050ti that doesn't require additional power and is for under $120ish. Please

Is there a limit to heatpipe length?

    Posted: 03 May 2019 01:42 PM PDT

For example, one of the reasons that people prefer AIOs over air coolers is because the chunky heat sink obscures the build. What if the air cooler used very long heat pipes to move the heat sink to a better location (the front of the case where the drive cages go, for instance)? Obviously this would only work if the CPU cooler was made to fit specific cases, but would it work at all or is there is limit to the length of heat pipes? Any thoughts about this? I have had this idea for a while and would love to know if it would be possible. It would be all the benefits of air cooling and none of the downsides.

    Tips for building my pc

    Posted: 03 May 2019 01:31 PM PDT

I have finally bought all the parts for my pc and am about to put it together. I have already watched a couple videos detailing how to do it. But I was wondering if I could get some quick tips so that I don't damage anything or make the building process easier.

Just build PC last night, it won't power on at all

    Posted: 03 May 2019 03:55 PM PDT

Just got all my components yesterday and started off my first build but sadly I'm unable to turn on the PC. I've tried checking all the power cables, pcu, etc.

    Here's a list of my specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QNzJKB

And a couple of pics https://imgur.com/a/tuLZ4nJ https://imgur.com/a/3hDPN2M , I'm starting to think that the issue could be related to the ATX Cable as it's supposed to do a 'click' noise but it just connects and it's really sturdy to move around, starting to worry that the mobo is not working at all as there's no lights on it..Any help is greatly appreciated!

Edit: Some of the stuff that I've tried so far

-Checked power cables, SATA, removed RAM and put it back again (also checked that it was on the right position)

-My CPU power has two connectors but one has 8 pins and the other 4 and both my cables only have 4 pins although I have read that shouldn't be an issue

-One of the only details was that the MB didnt fit with just one of the sockets but that put it away from it and not closer so not sure if that could be an issue..

I'm going to be using the pc for some gaming but probably mostly CAD stuff so that will be my priority. Is it worth looking at AMD GPUs for better compatibility? How about the other parts?

    Built PC for my Grandfather

    Posted: 02 May 2019 07:18 PM PDT

So, I've been building systems for about 9 years now between my own and some built for friends.

I have always helped my grandfather with everything tech related and have a beautiful relationship that makes me very happy.

In the past months and probably years his PC (basic HP all-in-one from maybe 2012) stared to become quite unusable and frustrating for a normal person to use, even more to a 70+ year old user.

So, he reaches to me like he usually does so I can come and help him with whatever the issue may be and at the same time bond and have good conversation. This time due to the utter unusability of his PC we decided to change it for another one, likely another basic AIO because he was already used to the format.

But then I suggested that I could build him a system, for the same price or even lower that the AIO that he was looking at, roughly 500-550 UDS in our country (Chile). So, he was on board with the idea and i came up with a build that was more than okay for his usage (mostly Office, checking his email and transactions within his bank webpage).

    Landed on these components:

    AMD Ryzen 3 2200G

    Asus Prime A320M-K

    Crucial 8 GB DDR4 2666

    Toshiba 1TB P300 HDD

    Crucial 120 GB BX500 SSD

EVGA 450 BT 80Plus Bronze PSU

Cheap Case with 3 fans and cool as it comes for a 70+ year old man blue LEDs

LG 24" FullHD 75hz IPS Monitor

So we went out to buy everything and then came home to assemble the beast for him. And let me tell you how great it feels to see a man that you admire and have always look up to stare in awe at me while the system began to take form, something that was beyond what he could imagine because despite always being surrounded with PCs never actually came close to put one together nor look and feel the individual components and learning what each one of them does beyond the usual "4GB RAM" spec that he usually read while deciding what AIO to buy next.

Long story short, we finish the build, he was the best assistant I have ever had, eager to learn new things and willing to help and get involved in every step of the way.

We wired everything up, set up his new IPS monitor and fire this bad boy up, installed Win10 on the SSD in like 5 minutes and his jaw was already on the floor. We went to eat dinner with my grandmother and then resume the setup, installed Office, configure antivirus, update drivers and log in all his accounts so the experience could be as close as 1 to 1 with the old PC only that 1000 times faster.

His expression looking at the IPS panel from every angle, setting up the scaling so he could see everything without stressing his view and laugh as he log on to his bank account fast as a snap was in lack of other expression beautiful: a man of his age enjoying the to the fullest the situation we were on.

And with that experience is how I would describe what building a system could bring to a human being: pure unfiltered excitement and enjoyment of life, the possibility to bond further with family and friends and using the system for its original intended purpose: to make like simpler and faster.

Sorry for the long post but felt like I needed to vent this somewhere and what a better place than the heart of the building community.

Thanks for the read and keep building!

    Black Friday discount

Never built a pc before and money-wise am trying to be as 'budget' (read stingy) as possible. That being said I was wondering how large Black Friday sales are for pc parts how much money I could save?

Edit: I'll be waiting till about September/October to start buying parts anyway as I don't have the money saved up yet

    Asus Aura Sync

So I just finished my build and setup up process and I downloaded Asus Aura Sync. However, when opened, it will only detect the mobo and ram I have and not the gpu or cooler. Am I doing something wrong and is there a way to manually sync it?

Easy Ways to Clean The Dust Off of The Desk/Keyboard etc. ???

    Posted: 03 May 2019 09:32 AM PDT

The place I live in is too dusty. Too much dust gathers in a week, it's extremely annoying and ugly. Keyboards are worse when dust gathers around all keys and in narrow spaces.

I was wondering how everyone handles it (or without the dust scattering all over the place after cleaning). I use tissues and water. Are there better options/tools to ease the work?

    Advice Before I Commit

    Posted: 03 May 2019 04:20 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

So I'm building my first PC! With that being said, I have a few questions before I pull the trigger. Before I ask, here is the planned build:

    Intel - Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor
NZXT - Kraken X62 Rev 2 98.17 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Gigabyte - Z390 AORUS ULTRA ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
    Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (x2)
Seagate - Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Samsung - 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
Asus - GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB ROG Strix Gaming OC Video Card
Corsair - 750D ATX Full Tower Case
    EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
    Microsoft - Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit

Do you guys see any potential issues or concerns (advice also welcome!). Along with that, I'm wanting to purchase an Ultra-wide monitor, but after lots of research, their seems to be lots of differing opinions on what the best Ultra-wide is on the market right now.

    Thanks everyone!

    Need help choosing a case

    Posted: 03 May 2019 01:53 PM PDT

ID LIKE TO STICK WITH MICRO ATX IF POSSIBLE

So I'm currently using a cooler master Q300L micro tower, I'd like to get a nicer new case, but I'm worried my components won't fit, I have a 240mm Thermaltake water 3.0 AIO and a gtx 1080 ti Gigabyte auros, with an accelero cooler on it, my question is, would you guys be able to recommend a case that will fit these components? I believe a lot of people know the measurement of an accelero cooler but if not, it's 288mm I believe, the gpu almost touches the fans on the radiator in the front currently so I'm worried there aren't too many options for me, any help would be appreciated
