Not very smart 40 y/o wanting 6 to 8gb GPU touchscreen laptop for dime on dollar Posted: 29 May 2019 07:40 PM PDT I'm a lighting designer that has a MA3 Command Wing on the way. Would like to have a laptop with touch screen to run shows with, with enough juice to run the command wing, a midi controller, two external touch screen monitors, and an enode. I think I'm barking up the wrong tree in asking in this community of reddit, but the lighting communities get side tracked pretty quickly and my questions get lost in the process. I would prefer 6 to 8gb for GPU, but really want that touch screen and want to keep the price down. I am no computer expert, but keep reading about these external GPUs, but don't really understand how it all works (hence the weird title). Can I buy a touch screen laptop with thunderbolt and low gpu and then get an eGPU to boost up GPU when I need it? Are there any eGPUs out there that are on the portable side? Would it just be cheaper (or smarter), in the long run, to buy a more expensive gaming laptop and forgo the touch screen capability? Thanks [link] [comments] |
A gaming laptop with good battery life for gaming and school Posted: 30 May 2019 03:57 AM PDT Question in the title, I'm looking for a laptop with the performance to run some games at good setting whilst simultaneously having at least 6 hours of battery life so I could use it for school without having to recharge every 3 hours or so. Yeah if you respond thanks for the advice! :) I'm currently looking at the Razer blade 15 advanced and blade pro. Any other good suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Gaming and University on a £1500 budget Posted: 30 May 2019 04:54 AM PDT Hey everyone, I'm currently using a 2015 Macbook Pro which seems like it could die at any point on me. I'm looking into options for a sleek, lightweight, and not over the top looking laptop which can handle any game on medium settings with fairly decent FPS, and I can easily carry in my backpack to use at Uni. My ideal option at the moment seems like the Razer Blade 15 as it is capable of handling everything i need as well as having the build design and sleekness of the MacBooks I'm so used to. If any of you guys could help make my decision that would be great. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 May 2019 10:52 AM PDT Hey guys! Currently is it still okay to get the laptops with the GTX 1060 as the new RTX 2060 and 1660 are coming out. Or is it better to get a laptop with a 1650? I use it for college and also a bit of gaming. Games that I usually play is Dota and sometimes i play games like Monster Hunter World and some other anime games. Thanks in advance! Ghost ASUS Vivobook S14 S412DA-EK005T Posted: 30 May 2019 04:27 AM PDT I can not find this laptop on Asus website "ASUS Vivobook S14 S412DA-EK005T". It features a 14" screen, an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U CPU and it seems recent. There are no review, announcement, no unboxing video, nothing. I can only find it on a few French retail websites like https://www.amazon.fr/Asus-Vivobook-S420UA-EK021T-portable-Français/dp/B07QDQYL3J/ref=sr_1_2?__mk_fr_FR=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&keywords=vivobook%2Bs14&qid=1559215451&s=gateway&sr=8-2&th=1 Is this normal? I have already ordered it and I can return it within 14 days. [link] [comments] |
Another college freshman needs a laptop Posted: 29 May 2019 07:42 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** I honestly don't know how much to spend on a laptop, but I'm hoping it can last me through college. $800 is probably the most I would go (USA) * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life is the most important factor. I really have no desire to have a touch screen. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Very important (walking around campus) * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** No bigger than 13 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I wont be anything intensive like editing or gaming-just Internet browsing. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A nice keyboard would be good for taking notes * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I was thinking of circumventing the whole process of researching laptops and just getting a Macbook to add to my iPhone, but I don't want to drop +$1000 if I won't be using the laptop for anything besides school work (not even engineering/CS major). Are Macbooks even good laptops? Who knows! [link] [comments] |
Tech noob looking for a durable and portable laptop Posted: 30 May 2019 04:26 AM PDT Hi! I'm looking for a laptop that's not over the equivalent of $850 in the US. Fair warning: I'm kinda dense about tech so I might not be able to keep up with highly technical terminologies. Basically, here are my priorities: High priority: - a machine that will last long, assuming it is well taken care of (I'm very careful abt my devices, so no problem in this area). I would want this to last at least 5 years.
Low priority: - brand - I don't really have an affinity to any brand in particular - battery life - I'll be using the laptop plugged in most of the time, so a battery life of 6 hours should suffice. - Thunderbolt support - I've been reading about this a lot and I honestly don't know much about it to look for it in a device (although some insight wouldn't hurt!) Thanks a lot to those who will answer! I know it's a lot but all recommendations will be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Which budget gaming laptop should i buy? Posted: 30 May 2019 04:03 AM PDT Hello I'm in the UK and currently looking for a budget gaming laptop for gaming and video editing. I've chosen three laptops and now I need to decide which one to get. They all have GTX 1060 6gb and i7 8750h with 16gb ram.
I've never had a laptop before so I need you guys to help me which one to buy...I'm confused. [link] [comments] |
A laptop for a (hopefully) very long time Posted: 30 May 2019 03:11 AM PDT I'm looking for a laptop that is great for both gaming and creating motion graphics.
My budget is around $1200. The US.
I don't know, I never really needed a good battery because my laptop is always plugged.
none.
Windows
Not smaller than 15".
I do graphics and motion graphics, photoshop, illustrator, after effects, adobe premiere.
I'd love to be able to play PUBG at max graphics settings.
I want it to have high CPU and graphics card, because I'm planning to keep this one for as long as possible and upgrade the ram and hard disk whenever needed.
I've been researching for the past week and I looked into so many laptops but every time I decide on one, I jump on to another. So I finally decided to come here and ask for help because I'm really tired of researching. The laptops I was going to buy but didn't: Lenovo Y700: Because there was no enter key on the right side of the keyboard and I didn't like the coloring that much. Helios 300: Because I heard a lot of people complaining about the heat and the noise it makes. Dell G7: Because the coloring wasn't really that good. HP Omen 15: I don't really remember. Please help me I'm so tired of roaming the internet for answers. [link] [comments] |

[USA] ~$1000 14" 16:10 Laptop with Dedicated GPU? Posted: 29 May 2019 07:57 PM PDT Hello, I'm looking for a new laptop for on the go CAD modeling (SolidWorks). It doesn't have to handle huge assemblies (have a desktop I can access when necessary), but I would like a dedicated GPU so modeling is a bit smoother.
My budget is around $1000, but I might consider going higher if there is something compelling enough. I'm in the US.
I don't need a 2 in 1, but good battery life is important to me.
I take the bus to work and I'll be taking the laptop between the office and the machine shop, so something light would be preferable. My current laptop is around 3 pounds so nothing way heavier than that. I would rather sacrifice performance than portability (no hardcore workstation laptop required).
Windows
I'm currently using a 13" laptop, but I think its a bit cramped. I'm not sure if 15" would be too large for the sake of portability, so I am aiming for 14". Let me know if you guys think 15" is better.
Mostly CAD: SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, and occasionally Fusion 360 for CAM.
I don't really play many games any more.
I prefer any screen with more vertical real estate, so I'd like a screen with a 16:10 or 3:2 aspect ratio. Also, 16gb ram, an SSD, and a HDMI port would be nice.
I also need something professional looking, nothing too flashy. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Want laptop for outdoors (sunny/no shades) Posted: 30 May 2019 01:23 AM PDT
~500€ Spain
Battery Life. My current laptop has no fan and battery lasts a lot, but screen has not enough brightness/contrast.
Thiness not so much, but wheight is important, since I have to carry it in a backpack, I can't go in some places with a car.
Linux.
It has to be max 13'' to fit in the backpack. Smaller screen sizes also become difficult to type.
No, just lightweight tasks. Basically editing documents, and uploading/downloading (using the mobile phone as access point).
No games.
For 500€ I don't expect much but preferences by order are: Good screen for sunlight, reliable build quality and good keyboard.
The processor has to be X86 but it can be an Atom or something low-power. Battery life is way more important than processing power. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 May 2019 08:33 PM PDT I'm having trouble deciding which laptop to buy, an Asus F510UA: ASUS VivoBook Thin and Lightweight FHD WideView Laptop, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD+1TB HDD,Windows 10 https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0795W86N3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_N107CbXHDDQWB Or an acer aspire 5: Acer Aspire 5, 15.6" Full HD Display, Core i7-8550U, MX150 Graphics, 8GB Ram, 1 TB Hard Drive https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B076DT6TXZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_a307CbGENY6MQ I want the form factor of the Asus, I like the SSD and HDD combo, and the fingerprint sensor. But the acer has dedicated graphics. I don't really play PC games anymore, but I might play a few here and there, namely Rocket League and Minecraft. Will I be able to get by on integrated graphics on the 8th gen i5? Any opinions/advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen1 vs Gen2 Posted: 30 May 2019 12:08 AM PDT Hello Friends, I recently purchased a lenovo thinkpad X1 extreme with the 1050 ti graphics + i7-8850h processors, but I just found out that they will be refreshing this line with a nvidia 1660 max q with i9 gen9 processors. Should I return my laptop an wait for the refresh? Or will the improvements be marginal at best / not worth the time/money? Any opinions on this is much appreciated. [link] [comments] |

I'm in the US and I have a budget of about 800$ and I would prefer to spend less than that.
Definitely looking for performance, battery is also up there in priorities. Touch screen would be nice, but not necessary.
Pretty important. I'm not looking to go all in for weight and thinness, but I have a small backpack and carry a lot of notebooks with me. I have the Lenovo e455 (4lbs) and its just too heavy to carry around with my notebooks.
I'm most comfortable with windows, and it seems like Mac is out of my price range.
14" is my preferred screen size. 1080p resolution is nice but I'm willing to go 4k if its withing the budget.
Doing mostly Java programming, lots of web browsing, and the occasional video game.
Games I'll probably play are Civilization V, Terraria, Minecraft. If it can run Fallout 4 decently well I'd be super happy.
Build quality is very important, I'll have it in my backpack all day and it might get banged up a little bit so I need something a bit more sturdy. Most laptop keyboards are pretty nice for me, as long as its a normal tenkeyless layout it should be good. I hate touchpads without physical mouse buttons, but if it can pull it off I'm ok with it. HDD vs SSD doesn't really matter, I have an extra SSD I can use so I'll probably toss it in if it comes with just a HDD. I also have no preference towards AMD or Intel, but I'm note sure if I should wait until AMD comes out with their new mobile processors but I think it might be a while until they come out.
I currently have a Lenovo e455 with the A10 chip option but it really isn't cutting it with the most basic web browsing. I'd prefer to also stay away from Lenovo because of security issues and its one of the reasons why I need a new laptop. I know I put a lot of stuff above but I'm really not that picky with it, anything will feel like a huge upgrade. [link] [comments] |

Gaming - Everquest 2, Divinity Original Sin 2, Wasteland 2
At the time of release these were the following recommended specs: Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850/AMD Phenom II x2 RAM: 4 GB Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 260/AMD Radeon HD 4870 From what I can gather, the Intel chip mentioned above had a 3.00 GHz speed. Modern chips seem to me to have a base speed that is lower but "boosting" abilities that go higher. But my concern is that, if I play the game a lot and force the cpu to use those higher speeds, it will burn out the chip more quickly. As well, it seems to be understood within the community that a powerful graphics card helps tremendously with running the game. I have read that 4GB GPU RAM is the minimum needed to run this game at higher settings. In browsing current model graphics cards it seems that I should be ok here but I would like to confirm, and also don't necessarily want to overspend on something that would be overkill. Lastly, I have a 25/25 speed internet and would like a laptop that has hardware to support that speed. In addition to this, I do play some more modern games and so I would like to be sure that the computer I buy can handle those games as well.

Looking for a thin & light gaming laptop for college Posted: 29 May 2019 05:22 PM PDT I'm going to college next year, I have a job this summer, and I want a better laptop. I'd like something that can play modern titles, and something that'll last me through college. I'm looking at a few options, mainly the 2019 Razer Blade 15 (9th gen i7, 2070, Mercury White $2650) and the Asus Zephyrus G GA502 ( https://www.asus.com/us/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG-Zephyrus-G-GA502/ ). I'd like to keep it below the price of the Razer one; it's pushing my price point but I like how portable it is. If you have any of these laptops, or have other recommendations for me, please let me know! [link] [comments] |

need help picking laptop for school/work Posted: 29 May 2019 04:43 PM PDT Hi so I live in the us and i need a laptop that works for school. I'm studying electrical engineering in the fall, and I've heard a good computer is a must. I also need it to double as a work computer; I currently am an aspiring writer and also make and sell basic beats. I figure as long as its not slow I can do most of my writing in google docs. the main issue is a laptop that supports music production and fits my school needs. I've heard the microsoft surface pro 6 was pretty good, not sure if theres anything better. My budget is anything under 1000 dollars. [link] [comments] |
