If I buy the Acer Nitro 5 with the 252 SSD can I add in a 2.5 HDD or SSD?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 11:25 AM PDT

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-nitro-5-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-256gb-solid-state-drive-black/6302395.p?skuId=6302395

It's also on Amazon but it is low on stock so this is just in case:

This is the laptop I plan to buy.

It has a 252 SSD but it don't seem that big so I'll also buy a 240 2.5 SATA3 SSD (I think I got those terms right? SATA3 is the thick one that looks like a slab while M.2 looks like a chip) drive to add on but does this laptop have a vacant 2.5 drive? I think the 252 SSD in this laptop is a M.2.

Also when I buy this laptop, open it up and add the 2.5 SSD in, and turn it back on. It registers instantly right or I need an extra process?

    Gaming desktop replacement

    Posted: 15 May 2019 09:46 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to $2000, but preferably around $1500. It will be bought in the United States, and used in Japan.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs is most important. I have a Surface Book for mobility and 2-in-1 use.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is critical, I wouldn't mind setting up a Linux partition as well.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The 17" range is probably good, but if there are larger options I'm game. Again, this is desktop replacement.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This is a gaming machine. I play simulator games (Forza and Beam.NG, Euro and American Truck Simulator), Star Citizen, World of Warships, Stellaris, dabble in VR, and lots of other stuff. VR is not a requirement, but it'd be nice.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't require a high refresh rate, but I like to run things on Ultra. I currently game on a GTX 1080 at 2560x1080 resolution, or on my Oculus Rift.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality and potential for upgrades are important to me. I've never bought a dedicated gaming laptop, but I've been building desktop PCs for years, so I'm not afraid of getting under the hood. I don't know if there are laptops with mechanical keyboards, but that would be really cool to have.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Portability is not important to me at all. External GPU cases are a possibility, as I do have my GTX 1080 already, but only if it'll save me $100 or more.

Are the cheaper models of the Acer Nitro 5 decent enough?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 11:31 PM PDT

The Acer Nitro 5 is indisputably one of the most popular choices right now for budget gaming laptops on YouTube, and even here. But the videos that I watch always present the 1050 TI model with the 256 GB SSD. My budget actually lies a little lower than that, and the options seem to be:

The AMD model with an RX 560X card and a 1 TB Hard Drive for $589.99 as of posting,

And the Intel model with a base 1050 card and the 256 GB SSD for $629.99 as of posting.

Are these models any good? If so, is the Intel model that much of a boost from the AMD model to warrant the extra 40 dollars? I'm not tech-savvy at all, and I'm currently posting on an old Inspiron 7720 with a GT 650M, so really anything would be a massive improvement at this rate.

Laptop for Computer Science and/or Physics major

    Posted: 16 May 2019 03:08 AM PDT

I'm currently a junior in high school, and I am planning on buying a laptop during Black Friday this year. I already have a gaming laptop (i5-4590, 16gb ram, GTX 1060 6gb) so I was planning on buying a thin laptop with a mx 150/250(Huawei Matebook 14). Can anyone who is currently majoring in either physics or computer science, or both, advise me on whether I should buy a thin laptop, or a gaming laptop for college. My budget is around $1000-$1300. If you need further info, please ask. Thanks!!

    Posted: 16 May 2019 02:43 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: -Around USD1000 but willing to go up to USD1500. US

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Ideally Good battery life, 2 in 1 isn't a must but would be highly appreciated

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -14 or 15in.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: -Nothing too serious, just a laptop for travel and day to day use that can moderately game

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -Overwatch, CSGO, Dota2, maybe some Skyrim and Fallout. Pretty happy with the numbers on the MX15 just as long as it has a dedicated graphics card

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Good build quality would be nice. Also if there are any thin&light's out there with easily upgradable storage and RAM

College and League 90 fps on mid settings

    Posted: 16 May 2019 01:30 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 400- 700 I'm willing to spend up to 700 € if it's really worth it but if there's an item that meets my requirement for around 400 it would be a life savior. France
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Ideally Good battery life, and ideally the cheapest that meets the requirements
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care at all
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. None in particular.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: I was entertaining playing around with Fruity loops for music making, but if that's a consideration that bumps the price too much i'm happy to pass on it.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Only League of legends and Hearthstone, ideally i'd like to play League at around 90 fps on mid settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm preparing an important exam that's in 5 months and i irreparably broke my old computer but i managed to salvage my SSD.
    • My main needs in descending order are academic functionnality, possibility to play the games i do in a mid- low settings and some autonomy but i can pass on the autonomy. Music production would be cherry on top.
    • My max usage of any laptop in the past would've been playing league, while listening to music on spotify, and having some internet tabs open.
    • I'm looking at these ones for now : the Acer Aspire E5-575G-543 , this ASUS R540UA-DM1274 and this Zenbook Flip UX360UAK-DQ412T if you guys have thoughts ?
    • Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for the advice!

Looking for a new laptop for school and digital art

    Posted: 15 May 2019 09:13 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA. I would prefer something around the $400 range but I am flexible, however $600 is MAX
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, also a good battery life, but that's not super important
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, but I don't want a brick
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using this computer for school, I'm majoring in Graphic Art, but don't know what specific programs will be required yet. I also want to use this computer for my own projects; so something that can handle Paint Tool Sai and/or Clip Studio Paint.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? NO touch-screens!!! I already have a display tablet (an XP-Pen) to use with it and I feel a touch-screen would just make that obsolete.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mostly I just want something simple that I can do school work on as well as personal projects with the programs mentioned above

Fingers on the trigger, don't know which laptop to choose, help me out and I'll give ya a cookie.

    Posted: 15 May 2019 11:29 PM PDT

    TLDR; My two options are:

    https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-TUF505DU-EB74-TUF-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B07QQB6DC1

    ASUS TUF 505 ryzen 7 3750h/gtx1660/16gb/ssd+hd

    https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Legion-Y7000-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B07K9JH8CL

    Lenovo Legion Y7000 i7 8750h/gtx1060/16gb/ssd+hd

So after trawling through this treasure trove of a subreddit, (maybe I've missed something? Feel free to give suggestions) I believe I may have found two laptops that suit my needs close to perfectly. I need a capable future proof gaming laptop that has GREAT THERMALS/BUILD QUALITY (because I like to have several hour gaming sessions on the weekend (4-5 hours)) and is future proof, budget is around 900-1100$ USD. I play mainly Fortnite these days but would like future proofing for apex/next elder scrolls. Suggestions/options/other loptops welcome, pulling the trigger in 12 hours. remember thermals thermals thermals thermals.

College student looking for longevity and portability

    Posted: 15 May 2019 10:44 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of the purchase:**

I'd like to keep it to around $500, but am willing to go up to $750 max. I am in the United States.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specs for the money. Not necessarily for my need in performance, but more for the longevity of the device. I would like to not feel the need to replace it within the next 2 or 3 years.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Pretty important. I'm a college student, and need to carry it around all the time.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows 10.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

As weird as it sounds: the smaller the better. I will be using a secondary monitor when I am at my apartment, so I'd like to keep it small for when I'm on the go, as I will be using the large monitor and an external Bluetooth keyboard when I am at home. This does mean IO is pretty important, as I will need to connect to the said secondary monitor.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Audio editing and very light photo editing (taking a color photo and turning it black and white, re-cropping, etc.)
    Programs: GIMP and Adobe Audition

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Not looking for gaming at all; I have an Xbox for that.

    * **Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Needs a (micro) SD card reader and a way to extend the display to a secondary monitor (No preference on HDMI, Mini-Display port, or USB-C.)
I would like a nice, backlit keyboard and solid, metal build, but these are not entirely necessary.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I'm mostly looking at the entry-level Surface Go and the Surface Pro M3/4GB RAM (this model, which is the 5th generation, is on a huge sale at Best Buy).
My only worry is that either device would feel obsulete in the not-too-distant future, and I would like to not have to replace it for a while.

**Rambling about what I have now and why I'm looking for a new laptop:
Currently, I have a Samsung Chromebook Pro (Chrome OS) and an Acer Nitro 5.
What I'd like is basically the same as my Chromebook, but with Windows OS. I loved Chrome OS when I started using it, but have come across too many issues with having to convert between WORD files and using Google Drive, as well as printing issues related to poor conversion between file types. But, as far as size, build quality, performance, and IO: It has been perfect. Everything except for the OS and ability to use real programs, which is really a shame. Bummer.
As for the Acer Nitro 5, I got it as a solution to getting a Windows device and figured I'd get something that could do gaming, but have found that I don't game nearly enough to justify hauling it around campus all the time. I didn't think it'd be a big deal when I bought it, but man was I wrong.

    Laptop for <$500-$600 for programming/college/gaming?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 10:43 AM PDT

Me and her live 30-40 minutes apart and anytime we can cut out time for in person hangouts, she insist she wants to get into playing games together online. She is a CS student and would prefer something that helps with that, but can also run some of today's game decently well (doesn't have to be godly).

Something I can play Path of Exile on - med/low settings. $500-600

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:21 PM PDT

I'm a college student, and all I need is the basics to do schoolwork on, and the only game I play is Path of Exile. I've heard that it's gpu/cpu heavy and an SSD has been very recommended. I do not care about running on high settings and graphics - if it's medium or low settings and doesn't lag spike and disconnect me, I am happy. I don't want to spend more than around 600, and I am indifferent to any fancy accessories - I do like touchscreen though. Weight/thinness - Doesn't matter much, just not too bulky. OS - windows

Right now I have an Acer aspire r5 571t, paid like $500 for it some years ago and the game doesn't run well at all as you might expect, and I have nothing but bad things to say about this laptop - the side of the screen has literally split open and the hinges that open/close it have broken within 2 years. I'm not even careless; it just broke lol.

I would buy a desktop but I don't have the room for one.

    Any suggestions?

$1500 or less Laptop for Gaming and College For My Brother

    Posted: 15 May 2019 07:09 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1500$ or less if possible (USA)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life should be good for many hours with light gaming and school work, and a 2 in 1 is fine.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Being light enough to carry around in a bag from place to place and thin is preferred, but these do not matter that much.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 is required.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Screen size is N/A, but screen should be 144 hertz.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

He's probably not going to be doing any editing, but games like Minecraft would probably be played, and many tabs are probably going to be opened at once. Most of the time, he's going to be opening Google docs, Gmail, Youtube, Netflix and other applications like Steam.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft and maybe Devil May Cry 5, Monster Hunter: World, Grand Theft Auto V, etc would mostly be played in high quality settings with at least 60 fps. He doesn't play that many games, but laptop should be able to play pretty recent games well.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? He needs a silent keyboard with a back light and a reliable build quality. This laptop would probably not be upgraded for many years and needs to be very dependable. An SSD would probably help for boot times. A touch-screen is optional, and any other things are probably unnecessary.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 looks like a good laptop. I'll get this if I don't like any suggestions.

    Gaming Laptop suggestions!

    Posted: 15 May 2019 03:14 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I am currently in the market for a gaming laptop. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking for and what brands to stay away from. I won't be doing any serious gaming on it so I don't need anything crazy expensive. Looking at spending at most $1,000, but it is not a big deal if it goes slightly over.
