Need advice: Gaming-oriented Distro, switching from Win10 to Linux.

    Posted: 15 May 2019 11:33 AM PDT

I'm having trouble comparing Linux distributions, since I don't know all that much. My goal: I want to use a distribution that will work for gaming. I'm tired of Windows 10, but I plan to put my chosen distro on a separate hard drive while keeping my Win10 drive as a back up. Now for preliminary information:

    Hardware
    Desktop. Mostly AMD stuff.
CPU: A10-7870K (plan to upgrade to Ryzen 5 2600 in the future, along with a new MB).
    GPU: RX 580 series.

    Experience / Knowledge
My experience with Linux up to this point is just messing around with the options in Linux Mint Cinnamon about a year or so ago in a VM. And that one time I played with Ubuntu on a computer my brother set up for someone. Everything else is just watching a handful of videos and a couple Google searches. Very much a noob.

I also know that Steam has a lot of compatibility stuff going on, and that Lutris and Wine exist, but not much else.

    Look and Feel
I know that Linux can be very modular, such that you can change your DE if you don't like it. I already know I probably want to use KDE, so the default DE of the distro doesn't bother me and won't affect my decision. I'm okay with a few Google searches being between the default DE and KDE.

As I said, I don't know much about the differences between distros, so I don't know what I'm getting between PopOS, Mint, Manjaro, Ubuntu, and the other popular distros -- beyond stuff like default applications (package manager and file manager for instance), the DE, and something about different "release cycles" (something like that). If just about anything of the popular distros should work with minimal setup time, I'm happy to just use Mint and go from there.

Recovering external hard drives in Ubuntu?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 01:44 PM PDT

I know virtually nothing about Linux despite installing it on a couple of computers in the past, so I don't know if this is feasible, but this seems like the right place to ask.

I've harvested a bunch of hard drives from computers, DVRs and such and tried to wipe them in Windows. There's a few that would turn on but Windows wouldn't recognize them. Are there any utilities or such that could recognize drives that should be working so I can format them in Linux? I ask about Ubuntu specifically because it's on the mini PC I just bought.

A variety of issues attempting to install Linux Mint. Going in circles and getting very frustrated.

    Posted: 15 May 2019 09:04 AM PDT

Hey guys... I'm a windows user hoping to move over to Linux. I have a PC that is the machine that I primarily use for work, gaming, internet browsing, etc and a relatively decent laptop that I use mostly when I travel and I also use it anytime I want to chromecast to my TV since I can take it into the living room.

I figured it would be better for me to install on the laptop first since I have a more serious need for the PC. I don't need to dual boot since I still have the PC, so I am attempting to wipe the laptop and install only Linux.

The laptop is an HP Probook 450 G3. I forget the exact specs and since it currently does not have an OS on it I'll just guess. I think its about a 6th gen i5, 8GB RAM, 240 or 256 GB SSD, onboard graphics. So modern specs and it has no problem with anything that's not graphic intensive.

So far I have been able to

    - Create a USB Install stick for Linux Mint (I have created 2 on separate USBs because early on I thought maybe the USB was causing my issues).

    - Boot up a live usb version of linux.

    - Start the install process.

    - Get to various points in the install until the install appears to slow down and freeze.

    - Attempted to do the "OEM Install" from the EUFI boot menu.

    - Sometimes I get farther with the OEM Install vs booting with a live usb, but similarly things seem to slow down and eventually stop.

    - I have used both Rufus and Universal-USB-Installer as one site suggested that Rufus might work better (can't remember the reason, at this point I've read dozens of suggestions from a huge variety of websites).

    - I have attempted to leave the maximum amount of persistent storage on my USB hoping that might help with the no disk space remaining error.

    - I have update BIOS to the newest version.

    - I have gone through the BIOS menu and turned off everything I could find suggested. Secure boot, I made sure EUFI was enabled. Can't remember all the settings I changed but I have been through every single item in my BIOS menu and made changes for everything I could find.

    - Maybe some other stuff that I can't remember right now.

The issues: There are a few issues that keep recurring.

    - I keep getting a message in the live usb boot that says, "this computer has only 0 bytes of disk space remaining". Most of the suggestions I get regarding this are to shrink my partitions but I am getting the message at a point where (1) my SSD is blank (no partitions) and (2) My USB with the live install has a ton of unused space (128 gb usb). It is however all partitioned. I have looked into shrinking that partition and it doesn't appear to be possible. I have also maximized the persistent storage. Neither of those things seems to help.

    - Sometimes I get an error, "device [80B6 :9d15] error status/mask=00000001/00002000" There is more but this error seems to happen dozens of times per second and the error message fills up the screen and keeps going until I force reboot the computer. Sometimes using my other usb stick helps with this. Sometimes using a different USB port. Sometimes re-installing the O/S on the usb. But I can't really figure out any consistency to this error.

    - If everything else goes well, the longer I am in my live usb boot of Linux, things feel like they are slowing down. I suspect this is related to the 0 bytes of disk space remaining but I don't know how to solve it. I think maybe the computer is running out of memory and that is why the install is failing, but I really don't know.

I keep reading through posts about how to fix stuff, but none of them seem to describe the problem I am having. I keep trying to make the changes they suggest, but so far I've been working on it for like 15 hours and I don't seem to be making any progress at all, its getting very frustrating.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated. I didn't think it would be this difficult to get Mint installed.

    Thanks

edit: another issue I forgot about. If I let the install run until it is completely frozen, then leave it alone a while longer before shutting off the pc... when I reboot from live usb Gparted will show that Linux Mint is installed on the SSD, but if I try to boot without the usb it will tell me that no OS is installed.

Command / script to show JUST the brightness percentage (like this: 100%)?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 12:33 PM PDT

    Hello!

Is there any way to display just the brightness percentage of the laptop screen? I only want the number and % symbol (like this: 100%) of the current percentage. The closest I got was displaying the brightness of both of my screens in the terminal like this:

    1.0

    1.0

I assume 1.0 means 100% but I want the value to be in %.

I'm gonna put it on my xfce4-panel using genmon so a terminal command or shell script will work just fine.

Help connecting a display to Linux

    Posted: 15 May 2019 08:45 AM PDT

I've been attempting to connect this generic TFT display to my Raspberry Pi 3+.

I've followed several tutorials such as this one however I cannot get my display to work.

The only thing I've managed to do is light up the display.

This command successfully produces a '/dev/fb1' directory

    sudo modprobe fbtft_device custom name=rpi-display speed=32000000 rotate=270

After this the display lights up brightly.

The output of dmesg is also positive:

    [ 1356.777275] fbtft_device: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned. [ 1356.778940] spidev spi0.0: spidev spi0.0 125000kHz 8 bits mode=0x00 [ 1356.778973] spidev spi0.1: spidev spi0.1 125000kHz 8 bits mode=0x00 [ 1356.779024] bcm2708_fb soc:fb: soc:fb id=-1 pdata? no [ 1356.779081] spidev spi0.0: Deleting spi0.0 [ 1356.780284] fbtft_device: GPIOS used by 'rpi-display': [ 1356.780294] fbtft_device: 'reset' = GPIO25 [ 1356.780301] fbtft_device: 'dc' = GPIO24 [ 1356.780307] fbtft_device: 'led' = GPIO18 [ 1356.780322] spidev spi0.1: spidev spi0.1 125000kHz 8 bits mode=0x00 [ 1356.780334] spi spi0.0: fb_ili9341 spi0.0 32000kHz 8 bits mode=0x00 [ 1356.820743] fb_ili9341: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned. I've then attempted to run many different combinations of 'sudo startx' or 'con2fbmap 1 1'. Nothing happens, the light just stays bright and doesn't show the desktop.

I've followed this thread from the Raspberry Pi forum and written this command sudo tail --bytes 153600 /var/log/messages > /dev/fb1 just to see if any change appears on the screen but nothing happens - just the same white screen.

All I can think of now is maybe I initially plugged the wires of the screen into the wrong GPIO initially and fried it? I've tripled checked the wiring and it's the same as everyone's tutorials on the web.

Any help would be appreciated, i've never added screen drivers to kernels or done anything like this so I am quite lost.

Can I upgrade Virtualbox 5.2 to 6.0 without problems?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 08:43 AM PDT

On the Software Manager we have the 5.2 version, which is what I installed.

I'd like to try version 6.0 which doesn't exist on Software Manager.

If I download from the website and install the file will there be any issues with VMs I currently have?

    Thanks!

What is the best Linux Distro for someoe who has never used a computer?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 02:15 AM PDT

I have recently got into linux and enjoy it very much and I was planning on giving to my father. He has barely used a computer ever, the last time he looked at one was running windows 98 and he has never even used that either. I was just wondering if there is a linux distro out there that can be used for someone who is completely new computers and has never used one before.

    Distro search: customization vs accessibility

    Posted: 15 May 2019 12:22 PM PDT

I used Ubuntu many years ago. When I started (Gutsy Gibbon), I really liked the degree to which I could customize not only the appearance but the behavior, at least visually, of the desktop and file folder environments. Most of all, that I could customize so many things through GUI menus instead of coding. Over the next few iterations of Ubuntu, they started to lean away from that, with an attitude of "if you want to customize, learn to code."

I'm returning to Linux now on my new HP Envy laptop, and looking for a distro that is the best compromise of most customization for least coding.

I'm not technically a noob at Linux, but I'm basically looking for a noob-oriented experience. I can handle a command line when necessary, but am not looking to spend much of my computing time in the code or compiling content from source or any of that.

I'd also prefer to be able to easily use mainstream file types (e.g. mp3) instead of being restricted to free, open-source ones, but that's a negotiable sacrifice.

I don't know if I'm feeling picky about much else, but if there's an important preference I should clarify feel free to ask.

    Any recommendations?

But when tinycore is installed without a GUI tce-load -wi python-pip.tcz seems to work, but pip install does not work on command line. Any reason why this should be? Desired end result is command line only machine that I ssh into and run python with modules that you need pip to install.

Manjaro's installer keeps crashing with my partition settings.

    Posted: 15 May 2019 11:46 AM PDT

I am trying to install Manjaro 18.0.4 with a specific storage configuration: an encrypted btrfs root partition and a plaintext ext4 boot partition on an SSD (sda) and encrypted btrfs home and swap partitions on a mechanical hard drive (sdb). I also have a small third partition on the SSD with the bios-grub flag enabled which is where I assume the bios/efi boot data will be. Both disks are using MBR partitions. I am using the manual partitioning feature on the

With these settings, the installation process manages to start and apply the changes to the disks, but at some point afterward the installer just goes back to the splash screen. At one point I got an error saying the grub installer exited with an error code but I can't reliably replicate this.

I am installing onto a virtualbox image at the moment to test the install process but I have it configured to have as similar a storage configuration to my target bare metal system as possible. I suspect the same problem will happen on bare metal.

What could be causing this, and how do I fix it so the installation can proceed?

Namespaces with shared loopback/lan - help me?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 05:45 AM PDT

So i managed to create a namespace in which i can run my VPN and have individual programs run through it, and shared that namespace using this guide: https://schnouki.net/post/2014/openvpn-for-a-single-application-on-linux/

my question should be rather simple, and i will probably figure it out like i always do...

    This line here:

ip netns exec frootvpn ip route add default via 10.200.200.1 dev vpn1

makes it so that if the openvpn closes, my ip is leaked (It starts running the namespace with my real network)

How can i setup a namespace that:

    1. runs through openvpn (I use screen to run openvpn in the namespace)

    2. cant access my real network (as in if openvpn closes, it doesnt start using my real ip/network)

    3. has the ability to connect to lan hosted software (Like Deluge web client for example, hosted at localhost:xxxx)

I would be truly thankful for any help i can get improving my server.

    SSH Tunneling over jumper host?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 09:07 AM PDT

    Hey,

I am currently tasked to build an infrastructure where students can connect to a jumper host, and then they get redirected in a dedicated subnet. So basically there is a host, lets say the IP is 192.168.1.10. Every student components with their laptop to this IP via SSH. The jumper host must forward all incoming traffic from the students to the other machines. Say we have 3 more machines behind the jumper host with the IPs .15 .16 and .17.

If student A connects he should be redirected to .15

If student B connects he should be redirected to .16

If student C connects he should be redirected to .17

They should not be able to do anything on the jumper host, they should silently be redirected to their subnet.

What script or tool can I use on the jumper host that redirects the requests?

How do I do that in detail? Can somebody explain me in detail how I can achieve that?
