Posted: 29 May 2019 01:28 PM PDT I want to have both Xfce and KDE installed on my Debian machine but I only want traditionally Xfce oriented programs to appear on Xfce (think Thunar, Orage, etc.) when that is active and only KDE oriented programs to appear on KDE (think Dolphin, Konsole, Latte Dock, etc.) when that one is active. Any way to do this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 May 2019 09:49 AM PDT I've reached a road block I just cant seem to overcome and I believe it is because I don't understand how reverse proxies work. Some back ground: I run Ubuntu 19.04 Server on an Optiplex 3040 with 12gb RAM 120 GB SSD internal and a few terabytes storage via USB HD's. Domain certs have been provided and confirmed via LetsEncrypt. I intend to use this machine as a home server. Ideally I want it to be as follows: Host: Ubuntu 19.04 Server running DDClient to update my domain with my dynamic public IP. Requests are made to the host on 80/443 and then forwarded via LXD's proxy device to my HAProxy container. The HAProxy container is running Ubuntu 18.04 with the following config (for now): haproxy.cfg As I understand this, if one were to navigate to "airsonic.domain.com" it should then be forwarded to Airsonic.lxd:80 (thought what I don't understand is that shouldn't it be forwarded on 443 since I have the certs?) From there, the Airsonic container running Ubuntu 18.04 w/ NGINX should pick it up via the NGINX reverse proxy: NGINX conf This should provide me with "https://airsonic.domain.com:8080/airsonic" when navigating to "http://airsonic.domain.com" Instead I get the Apache2 Ubuntu Default Page (Apache is not installed on the HAProxy container or the Airsonic container). If I type out the full address to avoid redirects "Https://airsonic.domain.com:8080/airsonic" I get: _ shows that its listening on http and https (ipv4) shows that its listening on http and https (ipv4) shows that "LXD" is listening on http and https (ipv6) So does anyone have any idea of whats going on? Secondary question, is it proper to have both the HAProxy container and the Airsonic container referring to the same certs? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
What Distro are MacBook Pro Users Currently Satisfied With? Posted: 29 May 2019 09:14 AM PDT Hello, As a disclaimer, and not to stir the pot, I am fully aware that there are much better laptops in terms of linux compatibility and value than the MacBook Pro. I currently own a MacBook Pro and have a need to use linux. I've experimented with multiple distributions on my 2012 MacBook Pro and have gotten the majority of them to work once installing the Wifi driver. I'm currently running Ubuntu v19. I'm looking to either run entirely or dual boot a linux distribution now on my 2015, 13in Retina MacBook pro (I would just run it through a vm but since I'm stuck with only 8gb ram, that is not an option). I like using linux for software development as opposed to my daily battles with Homebrew on Mac OS. Questions/Concerns:

Can't boot windows 10 after deleting Ubuntu and Installing Fedora. Posted: 29 May 2019 10:11 AM PDT I was previously using Ubuntu and Windows 10. I wanted to try out Fedora, so I made a USB installer, deleted Ubuntu partitions and installed Fedora. Fedora is working fine, no issue here. But when I try to boot from the Windows 10 drive, Grub rescue pops up. I don't know what to do now. Some other questions:
Other info:
Operating system and version: Earlier: Ubuntu 19.04 and Windows 10 Now: Fedora 30 and Windows 10 PS: I was also required to make the EFI partition when I first installed 18.04. I was not required to do that when I installed 19.04. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 May 2019 01:36 PM PDT As I am finally starting to get everything setup the way I like, the last thing I can't seem to get working is Kmail. I am working on configuring my account, but am stuck at configuring the outgoing mail server. I'm not understanding what I am supposed to put as the outgoing mail server. I suppose I fundamentally don't understand what that means. I have a gmail account I'm trying to use with Kmail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Wacom tablet with Chromebook that runs Linux? Posted: 29 May 2019 11:39 AM PDT I recently purchased a Chromebook and unfortunately didn't do enough research on computers before I picked this one because it isn't compatible with any Wacom drivers since they only offer Windows and Mac drivers. My Chromebook has Linux and I've been able to track down some sources that say any Wacom can be compatible with any Linux software but I have been told that they aren't compatible and there's no way to fix the issue. I really need some help on this issue as I am VERY NEW to Linux but I also don't want to have to purchase a new computer if I can get my Chromebook to run with my Wacom tablet. Thank you in advance, please feel free to ask me certain questions about my software/hardware I'll do the best I can to answer it! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 May 2019 11:03 AM PDT Hello, so I installed linux after using Windows for twelve years. I used dual boot and installed elementary os. I watched few YouTube videos and found their interface more interesting. As I have zero knowledge, I don't know how can get or make my setup like theirs. Here is one of the video: https://youtu.be/908BELWZBts I liked his interface plus the terminal. The terminal included with elementary os doesn't have suggestion feature like the one in the video. For now, I want to make my setup exactly like this. Can anyone guide me? Apologies for such extremely noob post. [link] [comments] |
Thunar opens vim in a weird terminal emulator Posted: 29 May 2019 10:58 AM PDT When I try to open a text file from thunar, it opens it in vim in a really basic terminal emulator which looks exactly the same as the terminals from other ttys. I want it to open the text file in vim, but in xfce4-terminal emulator. I tried to run the following commands to see their output because I thought they're somewhat related to my problem: 'open text.txt' and 'openvt text.txt' both return this: 'Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console' This is because I don't have the rights to read /dev/console, but running thunar as root caused that thunar opened the text file in mousepad instead of vim. 'mimeopen text.txt' and 'exo-open text.txt' did the same thing as thunar when opening text.txt. Output from mimeopen: 'Opening "text.txt" with Vim (text/plain) Exo-open didn't output anything. 'xdg-open text.txt': When run from terminal emulator: Opened vim correctly in the terminal emulator. When run without terminal emulator: Opened a window with Xfce terminal which just showed the contents of the file, but not in vim. OS: Debian XFCE 9 (stable) DE/WM: i3wm (not combined with XFCE nor any other DE) Edit: Any comment very appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Help Needed: New to Linux, Trying to Dual-Boot But Stuck At Mint Logo Posted: 29 May 2019 10:31 AM PDT Hello everyone. I have recently gained an attraction to linux and have recently made a bootable usb drive with linux mint 19.1 on it to be used as a dual boot alongside windows 10. I have followed videos on youtube and other internet sources to make sure that I could get it down. It was pretty straightforward seeing as how i'm not entirely a simpleton when it comes to computers. The problem arises whenever I first boot up and select my usb with the linux distro on it. It goes straight to the linux mint logo and then stays there forever and then nothing else happens. I have disabled secure boot and repackaged the usb bootable drive a few times now. I have scoured the internet for a while now and can't find a solution that works for me so I am hoping someone here can help. Thank you for the help in advance and I apologize if I sound like a total noob in this post. Hardware: Dell XPS 15 9560 laptop, can offer specs if important/needed. [link] [comments] |
How do I get Ubunutu to apply trackpad settings? Posted: 29 May 2019 04:30 AM PDT I'm running Kubuntu and I have an Apple Magic Trackpad. The system settings allows me to change the speed of tracking, what the pad treats as a right-click and so on. This all works fine except that it won't apply when I connect the trackpad. The settings are remembered but every time the system is rebooted, or I power cycle the trackpad returns to default behaviour so that I have to go back to trackpad settings and apply them again. Is there some way I can make the settings apply properly? [link] [comments] |

SED does not do what it is supposed to Posted: 29 May 2019 01:03 AM PDT For the context, I have a file prime.txt that consists of a prime number written in hex following the format : f1:32:d4 c4:a9:67 With 15 lines. I did a script decode.sh : #!/bin/bash sed - i "s/e1/66/g" prime.txt The problem is that this script does not replace every occurrence of e1 with 66 but only at the beginning and the end of the file. Is there something I did not understand about it? Edit : formatting [link] [comments] |

GParted not recognizing my HD (MAC) Posted: 29 May 2019 08:21 AM PDT Hello everyone, I hope you guys are having an awesome day. I have been trying to dual boot into Kali on a Mac using this procedure https://docs.kali.org/installation/kali-linux-dual-boot-on-mac-hardware provided on the Kali website. All instructions have gone smoothly until I get to the part where I must use G parted to resize my HD. When I try to, it shows my HD but the resize option is grayed out and I get a warning that says that my HD is either damaged, or unrecognized by Linux. I have tried to partition the HD on the Mac side using Disk Utility but when I go to install Linux using the live USB installer it does not acknowledge the partition created. It only sees my entire disk and the live USB Kali is booting from. Has any one dealt with this? Any solutions or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you! Other info: I am using an early 2015 MacBookAir running Mojave. I have 250 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM. The partition I created on the Mac side was 90GB. [link] [comments] |
ISO USB Writing Software with FAT support Posted: 29 May 2019 01:41 AM PDT I am trying to install Linux on a device that only supports UEFI and therefore, the USB-Stick has to be FAT32. The only software I found that is capable to do this, is Rufus for Windows. No single one that I found for Linux supports this, however. Can anyone here help?
