Question about Unifi and AT&T Fiber Static IP addresses after RG bypass Posted: 12 May 2019 05:24 PM PDT Hi everybody, Recently I set up a network in my home using Unifi equipment. I am using a USG-PRO-4 as the router and I used the instructions here (https://medium.com/@mrtcve/at-t-gigabit-fiber-modem-bypass-using-unifi-usg-updated-c628f7f458cf) to bypass my AT&T Residential Gateway (fiber). Long story short, I recently set up a pi-hole ad blocking DNS server and a couple of other things on a Ubuntu PC. I decided that getting a static IP address would help me configure a reliable VPN to use on my phone to get access to that Pi-hole DNS server on the go (for some reason my phone won't accept an alphanumeric address as an "always on" vpn server, it wants an IP only). So I purchased a block of static IP's and now because of my setup I can't figure out a way to actually use them... The way it seems to work is that AT&T still assigns my router a dynamic IP and the idea seems to be that it is up to the AT&T RG to assign public IP's from the block to devices on my network (if I was actually using it). So if the RG is bypassed and the USG is essentially pretending to be the RG, it can only ever get the dynamic IP from AT&T right? I've tried manually configuring the IP settings in the unifi controller, on the usg-pro-4, and on the computer itself just to see if it would work. No luck. After some googling it seems like the only way to use this block of static IP's would be to revert to allowing the AT&T RG to hand out IP addresses and sacrifice the true bypass. Here's the thing, I only need (or want) one static public IP for my whole network. It's fine (and ideal) if that IP is assigned to my Unifi router itself and not an individual client. I don't want my Ubuntu PC assigned a public IP address and exposed to the internet because I run a lot more stuff on there than just the DNS server. I can forward ports if needed for individual services. Is there a way to preserve my 'true bypass' setup and still achieve this? So, a couple summary questions to make responses easier:
Just in case in wasn't clear from my rudimentary questions, my knowledge about networking and stuff like this is at best a 3.5/10. I know enough to figure out what I don't know and follow step by step guides. No fundamental understanding of most concepts. Sorry :-/ Thanks in advance for any help! Happy Mother's Day! Looking for <$100 router that I can name "unknown devices" Posted: 12 May 2019 04:07 PM PDT Is there a router that I can rename all of my "unknown devices"? Example would be I know my Wyze MACID and IP and instead of seeing one of those I can rename it to "Wyze Deck" or something instead of having to try and figure it out. I am on bonded DSL so it will need need to a modem. I also have a 24port D-Link POE switch (DGS-1210-28P or something). Also have a TP-Link EAP245 on my ceiling (maybe I could change that out if there is a better unified solution) [link] [comments] |
Turning Internet Off a Certain Times Posted: 12 May 2019 01:58 PM PDT Greetings. Single dad of a 15 year old and a 12 year old. My 15 year old son has taken to staying up to ridiculous hours online gaming. I've got to get up at 6 in the morning for work so I'm not going to stay up policing him, so I figured I'd setup some controls. Figuring completely turn off the internet during certain hours of the day for all devices. I've got a Ubee DDW365 cable modem through Spectrum. It was easy to login to the modem and find the section where I should be able to do this. I set up the controls, saved it, and while the modem interface showed that they were active, they did absolutely nothing to limit access, wired or wirelessly. Called Spectrum, they remoted in and said that everything looked good and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working and recommended I go to the local Spectrum office for a replacement modem. Did that and had the same problem. Several more calls to Spectrum have gotten me nowhere and I'm ready to find my own solution. My theoretical plan is to get a router, connect that directly to the cable modem, set up MAC filtering on the modem limiting it to the MAC of the router, and set up time limits on the router. Does anyone have experience doing something like this and have a router recommendation? [link] [comments] |
TIFU by locking myself out of my router Posted: 12 May 2019 07:19 PM PDT FML I have a Netgear R7000 that thinks it's an ASUS RT-AC68U (Xwrt-vortex firmware). Before I left home to visit family, I enabled OpenVPN and took the configuration files with me. Tried it out and was able to remote desktop into my desktop and my server, decided to tweak some of the router settings so that I could more easily log in to edit port forwarding settings while I was gone. Xwrtmerlin has a feature for remote/WAN settings access, and also allows you to restrict settings access to certain IPs. I enabled both, and added the IP for where I currently am to the list - ignoring the fact that the drop down box was only showing me the three local IPs of the computers on my network. Now I'm completely locked out. I can still connect via VPN, and I can access all of my computers. I can't log into the router, "connection refused" via SSH and HTTPS. Even if I was physically in front of it, I think I'd still have to hard reset it. Is there any way to extract my settings? I had to clone the MAC address of my ISP's router and I have a bunch of static routes, port forwarding, and static DHCP shit set up. I don't want to spend an afternoon figuring that out again. Laugh with/at me. [link] [comments] |
Connect to internet through ethernet only, while Wifi connected for lan only. Posted: 12 May 2019 02:12 PM PDT Hi, I have 2 routers with internet, 1. Connected to internet through ethernet for everyday use 2. Connected by wifi for lan purposes only (home surveillance cameras) I want my computer to ignore the internet from the wifi, I have set the interface metric on the wifi higher than the ethernet connection. But I still find the internet running very slow when both are connected (wifi internet IS slow). any suggestions would help a lot. Im running Windows 10. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 May 2019 04:42 PM PDT Not sure if this is a network congestion issue or not. I play alot of online games and notice concessional input lag and ping spike on my Xbox One X. But this only seems to be mainly apparent when my parents are using the internet simultaneously. Download: 66mb Did a blufferboat test and I got a B rating and the ping was reaching 200+. My router doesn't have QoS settings that I know of and I was suggested to download a certain program that could do a similar thing and the router wasn't in the list that it could be achieved on. Posted: 12 May 2019 02:25 PM PDT Does the Netgear R7000 have different physical radios for the lower 5GHz band (bands 36-48) versus the upper bands (149-161)? I was on the upper bands and had to reboot the router daily because it stopped seeing some wired and wireless devices. Speed would also be a third of what it should. A reboot would fix these problems until the next day. Now I'm on the lower band and it's rock solid. There are no neighboring 5GHz networks. It's been like this for the last year of factory firmware updates with none of them fixing the issue. It also seemed like BitTorrent would exacerbate the problem as if there was a memory leak. Just trying to figure out why that seems to have solved my issue. [link] [comments] |
Tired of replacing network equipment! Posted: 12 May 2019 06:30 AM PDT I keep having lightning/surge damage coming through my dsl lines during thunderstorms. I lost both of my AT&T modems for the 3 time yesterday and it's the second time in 6 months. I am up to a total of 6 of my personal routers that have been fried since they were connected to the AT&T routers. I won't get into everything else that has been taken out as well. I have looked for solutions and just can't seem to find concrete information on what I should do. I am desperate to stop this. Any information/direction would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Wifi problem driving me insane please help Posted: 12 May 2019 05:27 AM PDT Hi i just moved into my new apartment and it doesnt provide ethernet so we can only use the wifi they provide, but thats not the problem because the speed is actually really fast and the problem only happens on one of the computers. so for the computer that has problem it uses a usb wifi adapter but i dont think it's the usb wifi adapters problem since ive moved it to the other one and everything is fine. This is the results when i try to ping www.google.com in cmd 30 times the maximum ping goes up to 2700 around twice( i would like to provide a screen shot but im kind of new to posting on reddit so i dont know how to .......) and when i try to play any games the ping would just jump up to 600 and basically disconnects me for like 2 seconds every like 5 seconds. I wanted to try sqm but i feel like its not possible since i dont have access to the router. I've tried switching over the wifi adapters on my other computers which is also usb, so I honestly dont know how to fix the problem. for the spec of my system Windows 10 64bit motherboard: gigabyte x470 aorus ultra gaming GPU: 2070 evga CPU: ryzen 2700x I wanted to try sqm but i feel like its not possible since i dont have access to the router. Can a Cat5 cable be slowing down my internet speed? Posted: 12 May 2019 11:09 AM PDT So I just got with a representative at Spectrum that was attempting to help diagnose the issue I'm having. I currently am supposed to be getting A down/up speed of 200mb/10mb respectively, however when running speedtests I only get 60mb/10mb. (wired ethernet connection) The coax cable connecting to my modem is a CATV cable while all other ethernet cables are Cat5e. Another thing to note, according to my parents when the technician came to install Spectrum into our home, all he did was connect the CATV coax cable. When I ran the speedtest that same day I was getting 60mb/10mb speeds which me, not knowing anything, thought that this is what we were paying for. It wasn't until I started paying for the internet bill that I noticed this incorrection. What could be the issue? [link] [comments] |
Using SFP port on switch for WAN Posted: 12 May 2019 08:59 PM PDT Hey, I've got a Cisco 2901 router and a Cisco 2960 switch laying around as I'm planning to get my CCNA at some point. I've got Bell Canada for Internet and TV and I want to bypass their equipment completely. In my case I've got fibre into my home and it's plugged directly into their equipment (Home Hub 3000). What I'm thinking is to use the SFP sport on the switch and connect the router via Ethernet. Bell deliverers their Internet over VLAN 35 and TV on 36. I'm assuming I'd tag those two VLANs on the switch and on the router as well. Can someone provide some insight? Would I need to tag an additional VLAN to facilitate the connection between the router and switch as well? [link] [comments] |
Access Point with ISP-Provided Router Posted: 12 May 2019 08:46 PM PDT I live in a 3000 sqft house (2 stories and basement). The ISP's modem/router/AP combo is in the basement where its ports go up to ethernet ports around the house. I want wifi coverage from one of the ethernet ports upstairs. If I were to use my own router, I would have to put the ISP modem into bridge mode to avoid a double NAT, but then all but one of the ports from the modem stop working, so I'm guessing I would need an access point rather than a full router. My question is, assuming what I wrote above is correct, what kind of access point would be best? I've looked into some options online and Reddit seems to like Ubiquiti's Unifi APs as opposed to consumer options. Thanks for any help with my situation and sorry for butchering any terminology, networking isn't my forte. [link] [comments] |
Why is Unraid favored over OMV on this sub? Posted: 12 May 2019 07:57 AM PDT I have been spending forever looking at which NAS software to build on. I've even thought about doing object storage but quickly abandoned it as unnecessary. So I came full circle back to the usuals. But I often see unraid mentioned here and rarely OMV. Why is that? Purpose of usb port on netgear router Posted: 12 May 2019 07:35 PM PDT My Netgear DGN2200v3 (I know it's mediocre) has a usb port. What is it for? I have a usb-powered amplified antenna and was wondering if the amplified antenna can use the router usb port and improve wifi signal strength. [link] [comments] |
Extending wifi with two routers Posted: 12 May 2019 07:31 PM PDT I am having trouble setting up a router as a wireless repeater. There is only one DSL line in my house and it works for my parents who use their cell phones and laptop/desktop minimally on the first level of my home. For me, on the other hand, I have all my devices set up on the opposite side of the house and the connection is very slow(I can barely use my laptop) I have a Netgear Nighthawk R6900v2(AC 1900) connected to my original router which I thought would improve speeds just because it is higher quality and might have better range and my isp provides me with shit hardware. It helped a little but not much. Long story short I've been browsing the sub and have been trying to set up the Nighthawk router as a wireless repeater to put on the other side of the house but my efforts have been useless. If anyone could advise me in any direction I would really appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Looking into MOCA, I have a few questions Posted: 12 May 2019 12:49 PM PDT So we just moved into a new apartment and our wifi is having trouble in the living room, especially with devices that don't support 5Ghz. Steaming on our smart TV is really bad and my PS4 connection is almost non existent. We don't have cable, just Youtube TV. My modem and router is down the hall in our office, which connects directly to my PC. In the living room we have coax which isn't being used and I just found out about MOCA and am thinking about using that to get my devices running better in the living room. I am looking into this: https://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-802-11ac-Extender-Internet-Antennas/dp/B01BV1Y3W2/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=wifi+coax+range+extender&qid=1557689640&s=gateway&sr=8-5 If I'm understanding this correctly, I should be able to go from coax -> MOCA -> TV and PS4 via Ethernet with the available LAN ports and it should also put out a strong wifi signal to any wireless devices in my living room. As I said, I live in an apartment building, I think there are about 8 units. Will I require a MOCA filter? If so, where would this go? I don't believe I have access to the coax cable that enters my apartment, it must be somewhere behind the drywall. [link] [comments] |
Home Networking Hardware Suggestions Posted: 12 May 2019 02:38 PM PDT So I am building a new house and separate shop. I have cat 6 run through both buildings. I am looking to put wireless access points in both the buildings. I know Ubiquiti is well thought of here, and I am looking at their products, but I don't think I need all the capabilities their products offer. What are some other products I can consider? I don't need fancy, and I will be living in this place by myself, and most of my video demands will be served by a wired connection, so I don't need crazy throughput. I just want simple stuff that works. I will be looking for a router, two interior access points, and one access point for outdoors, preferably wall mounted. [link] [comments] |
Small Apartment home network suggestions. Posted: 12 May 2019 05:47 PM PDT Hey everyone, My SO and myself will be moving in together soon (yay!!), of course with this comes a lot of investments and in this topic, networks. Currently I'm unable to take any of my network existing hardware with me, so I have been researching for ages, was using a Netgear Nighthawk R6700 I believe? Unsure about this. My needs are the following: My SO and I will be working from home, I use VoIP and she only handles emails, during these times no one will be using or streaming anything other that just work, the tentative network speed is 40MB. We currently have the following devices: Desktop PC (work), Laptop (work), A 4K TV expected to stream 4K content, A 1080p TV, A Xbox one X and Nintendo Switch (some very online gaming, multiplayer is very rarely played, 2 phones and a IPad. A future upgrade that I want to do is a small home server with a Ryzen APU, which most streaming is expected to be handling internally, and ocasionally externally when we are out of the house or on a trip, with some downloads scheduled during midnight-early morning. In short, most traffic will be WiFi, with the exception of my PC and possibly maybe the XBox being hardwired. On occasions there may be some traffic, such as randomly playing online on PC while a 4K stream is going on. I have been looking for options and was contemplating the Amplifi HD. I'm currently have been very out of the loop with newer devices, my current budget I'm aiming to spend on this is max 130 USD but I'm having a hard time understanding newer routers. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
ISP slowing down network traffic but not ICMP packets? Posted: 12 May 2019 01:57 PM PDT Hello, Been trying to troubleshoot what looks like ISP being congested at certain times. However odd stuff is going on. Well some speed testing shows bloat buffering on upload to 150ms degree. When I do ping tests on game servers they are not showing Ms increased. In game the Ms is not showing a increase, however there is clearly a large increase for input lag. Wondering if they are bufferbloating stuff but trying to hide it by not buffering the icmp packets for ping. [link] [comments] |
Are the Motorola and Zyxel MoCA 2.0 adapters the same product? (Pics) Posted: 12 May 2019 01:47 PM PDT Hi all -- Take a look at the back panels of the Motorola and Zyxel MoCA 2.0 adapters. Isn't it strange that they look nearly indistinguishable? Are they likely to be the same device? The top panels look different, but the base case might be the same. You can see full pics of the Motorola here, and the Zyxel here. Thoughts? (FYI, the Motorola product came out first. The Zyxels just came out last year.) [link] [comments] |
Huawei B593 s22 as an wifi repeater/extender Posted: 12 May 2019 05:13 PM PDT Good day to you guys may i ask is it possible to use huawei b593 - s22 as an wifi repeater? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 May 2019 08:54 AM PDT Hi all -- My impression was that Cat 6 / 6A cables were more than just good for future proofing because of alien crosstalk. Is this accurate? I also read that Cat 6 proved inadequate re: alien crosstalk, which prompted the Cat 6A spec. I can't find the original places I read this, but the Wikipedia page has some of the same points. In photos of enterprise or data center environments, I often see a dozen or more Cat cables bundled together. Is this the kind of situation where crosstalk matters? What about a residential context where you might have a few Cat cables bundled together and adjacent to RG6 or electric? [link] [comments] |
Setting up a Unifi network, concerned about PoE Posted: 12 May 2019 12:08 PM PDT So basically, a family member is just finishing up with a ton of renovations and he and I were talking about sorting out his networking stuff, since his current gear (netgear r7000) while good, won't be ideal for the size of the place (added a new room, built an additional garage, pool area, etc). He initially wanted to go with an all-netgear setup in the hopes that it would have the fewest headaches, since the current router is already Netgear. After looking on netgears website, it seems that the only APs they sell are under their business line and they're like $450+ where we live. I'm somewhat familiar with Ubiquiti and knew that something like the AC-PRO would be much cheaper (and seemingly better). So my current plan is to instead go with 3 UAP-AC-PROs and a Unifi Switch 8 (60w). The r7000 will remain as the actual router if nothing else, but will also act as an AP for the main floor of the house (basically nothing will change for it). But I'm being a little paranoid about it. The Switch 8 supports 60w of PoE total, at 15w per port. This should be enough for 3 UAP -AC-PROs, since they reportedly only consume 9w maximum. They both support 802.3af, so they will function properly. I guess I'm just looking for someone to confirm that I won't run into any power problems. I do have 2 additional questions though. Is there a limit to how long a cable run can be for PoE to work? Like is PoE limited to > 50 feet? Or will I run into the maximum length for Ethernet before that happens? Additionally, will I run into any problems keeping the R7000 on the network as an access point? I've heard that mixing brands in wifi can cause issues. If need be, I have a spare ERX kicking around that I could give him, and talk to him about getting another AC-PRO. [link] [comments] |
Advice on Port forwarding on OpenWRT using Huawei E3372h as internet connection Posted: 12 May 2019 12:02 PM PDT Hi, I was hoping somebody could be so kind to give some advice as I've been stuck on this problem for days now. I'm trying to set up wireguard on a Raspberry Pi of mine to get access to my home network when I'm away. I have set it up for port 5555 and I have forwarded this port on my OpenWRT router and Wireguard has no access. I think my problem comes from using a 4g SIM card as the internet access. I have it plugged into the back of the router using a Huawei E3372h dongle. When I get my public IP and visit it I get the Huawei splash page and not my Routers log in page. Is there any way to forward the port through both the router and the dongle? Thanks for any help or time given in advance! [link] [comments] |
My isp wont give me an ONT, can I install one myself? Posted: 12 May 2019 10:47 AM PDT I have fiber and my isp gave me a Calix 844g that I am not only forced to pay for, but I cant get it to go into full bridge mode and pass the wan connection to my router. Even if I could get it into bridge mode its an unnecessary component in the loop. My isp beat around the bush when I asked about an ONT and said the calix is basically an ont in bridge mode. What should I do? Edit: I just got an email from my isp, I have to call them to put the router in bridge mode. Im not exactly happy with that solution either [link] [comments] |
